Best Hunter Pets in World of Warcraft

3565 0

Hunter pets in WoW can give you tons of great bonuses, other than the fact that they’re cool to have. There are loads of pets to get in the game right now but only a few are really worth the trouble. We’re going to list down the best pets you can get in the game and we’ll teach you how to get them.

Duck

The first Hunter pet we're going to talk about is a duck. This pet is under the waterfowl family, which means it's a tenacity pet and doesn't have any unique special abilities. You'll find this duck almost everywhere, especially in Ohn'ahran Plains.

We got ours in Cloverwood Hollow, where there are plenty of them. This particular duck has the traditional duck coloring, which is why we chose it. One unique perk about these ducks is that when you click on them, they'll make a little quack noise.

Ice Bear

The next pet we want to talk about is the blue icy bear. There are a few different color variants of this pet, but the one we are focusing on can be found in the northeast of Azure Span. This is the only place you can find this particular coloring. The blue icy bear is a quest mob, so it has a fairly short respawn timer. We think these look really good, especially if you have the matching mount for a Mount-Pet combo.

Magmammoths

The next pet for us to talk about will be the magmammoths, specifically the orange magmammoth. There are a few different variations of these, such as horn sizes and whether they have spikes on their head, but this is the one we prefer. You'll find this in the northern end of Waking Shores.

There will be mobs channeling beams into it, but all you need to do is tame it—you don't have to get rid of the shield or anything like that. This is a mammoth pet, which means it's a tenacity pet, and its special skill is a 50% movement speed slow.

Slyvern

The next pet up is going to be the slyvern, specifically the black slyvern. Although all the color variations of these are very good, we really like the slyvern models. This is a feathermane pet, which means you will need the Tome of Hybrid Beast Taming to be able to tame these. If you don't know how to get that, you'll need to go back and do Legion content. You'll have to go through your class order hall, complete the Breach in the Tomb, and eventually unlock the quest called "Night of the Wild." Once you complete that, you'll get your class order hall mount and unlock the ability to purchase the Tome of Hybrid Beast Taming. Because it is a feathermane, it will have two special skills: Distraction and Slow Fall for both you and the pet.

If you want to pick this up, there are a few different locations to get it. One of those is over in the Ohn'ahran Plains on the west side near the Stormscar and the Emerald Dream area. Packs of these will be running around, and you may get unlucky with the color variations that spawn. If that's the case, just cull the ones that are currently there, wait for them to respawn, and you should eventually get the color variation you're after.

Sabertrons

Pets that require additional prerequisites to tame are rarer. The Sabertron is one of the less sighted hunter pets due to needing the Mechabond Imprint Matrix and its involvement in the quest "Sabertron." This was especially true during the Battle for Azeroth expansion. To tame this mechanical cat, you need to wait for the rare spawn to happen in Stormsong Valley, then try to tame the Sabertron without anybody else damaging it. Since the newer expansions have been released, the Sabertrons can be tamed with much less interference from other players. However, due to it not being the current content, many players do not tame this pet spontaneously.

Elegon the Spirit Dragon

During the Shadowlands expansion, a new tamable spirit beast in the form of a dragon became available in the Mogu'shan Vaults raid. Only tamable when specced in Beast Mastery, and an older expansion, the spirit dragon is often missed by more casual adventurers. Although Cloud Serpents are tamable in Shadowlands, this dragon falls under the spirit beast category and is therefore only tamable for Beast Mastery hunters.

Iron Juggernaut

The Iron Juggernaut was introduced during the Mists of Pandaria expansion. It needed the Mechabond Imprint Matrix and three objects that could be obtained during the Siege of Orgrimmar raid. During the raid, you would need to search the Iron Juggernauts for a Pile of Iron Juggernaut Parts, the Siegecrafter Blackfuse for a Blackfuse Power Core, and a Bucket of Paint that you can find in the raid. With those three items, you can craft and tame the Iron Juggernaut pet.

Lightning Paw

During the Legion expansion, a new tamable spirit beast was hiding in Duskwood. Two yellow glowing eyes gave it away. Always stealthed, the hunter needed to turn the hidden tracker on and comb Duskwood. The blue ghostly fox had a chance to spawn anywhere in Duskwood but had an increased chance to spawn in bushes with yellow glowing eyes. Most players took to the skies to comb Duskwood for the yellow eyes in hopes of finding Lightning Paw.

Scar and Karkin

Scar and Karkin were introduced during Cataclysm with their black metallic molten skin and glowing red eyes that certainly stand out from other hunting pets. Due to the long and unpredictable spawn timer, many players searched the area without success. To get to the spawn area of this rare mob, you had to perform a little platforming, which was a feat in itself. When you find the rare spawn, you will have to counter its fear or class barrage spell and start taming. If hunters did not counter the spell, they would be at risk of dying. Although the spawns were unpredictable, the mobs would spawn in allocated areas of the map, making it less difficult than some other rare hunter pets.

Loque’nahak

Loque’nahak is a tamable spirit beast from the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. It was the first spirit beast that was ever tamable and therefore holds a very special place in the hearts of veteran hunters. Unlike Scar or Karkin, Loque’nahak has a lot of potential spawn locations scattered over Sholazar Basin, not only making you wait but also actively searching for the mob. The tame itself is nothing special, and when tamed or killed, the player would be granted the Frostbitten achievement. However, the low spawn chance in combination with the potential spawn locations made this a very time-consuming tame and broke the patience of many hunters.

Gara

Gara is a spirit beast plagued by the void. In order to save her, hunters need to go through an extensive questline. You will gather berries, create an effigy, destroy void twisters, and ultimately defeat Xan and a bunch of void callers and lords. After killing Xan, Gara can be tamed. Due to the complexity and length of the questline, few hunters have finished it and claimed Gara. Not only does Gara look quite beautiful, but the added lore surrounding her makes her an interesting pet to have.

Ban'thalos

Ban'thalos was first introduced in Patch 4.2 and can be found at Mount Hyjal when the quest "The Protectors of Hyjal" has been completed. Unlike other flying tamable spirit beasts, Ban'thalos flies high beyond the target range of the hunter when on the ground. You will need to aggro the spirit beast while on a flying mount. This will dismount your hunter and drop you to the ground. If you survive the fall, Ban'thalos will put up a fight by casting Harsh Moonlight. The best advice is to cast Tame Beast as soon as possible when you land on the ground. The six to seven-hour respawn timer and the difficult way to cast Tame Beast make this pet a testament to the hunter's planning and timing.

Panthara

The Panthara will not ask you to get its attention and then drop out of the sky without a chute. It does, however, require a lot of preparation on farming. First off, you will need Fresh Talbuk Meat. This item has a very low drop chance in the Legion zones. When you have the Fresh Talbuk Meat, you will need to find the Panthara that you'd like to tame. You'll have to freeze trap the Panthara, then feign death to drop the aggro; otherwise, you will not be able to throw the Fresh Talbuk Meat. As soon as you throw the meat, you will have to start taming. The buff from the Fresh Talbuk Meat has a very small window and will expire quickly. If successful, you will be the proud owner of Panthara.

Felbound Wolf

Next is the Felbound Wolf, which is a Ferocity pet with a really nice Fel-tainted skin. This could be a great pet if you've recently unlocked the red Aridar skin for your Draenei. To get this pet, you'll find a bunch of them all over Tanaan Jungle, but by default, you won't be able to tame it.

However, getting the item to tame it is very straightforward. What we need is a Vial of Fel Cleansing, which drops from an NPC called Fel Rangari Anaara. You'll find them on the south coast of Tanaan Jungle. They don't have a very long respawn time—about 5 to 10 minutes—and as a max-level character, you'll kill these very easily. So, you'll kill this NPC, loot the vial, and then find one of these Felbound Wolves. Use the item on them, and then you can begin the tame and get yourself that pet.

Emerald Spirit

The next pet to talk about is the Emerald Spirit. If you're looking to set up a nice transmog for 10.2, which is going to be very Emerald Dream-based, this could be a great pet to go along with that.

It is a Cunning pet, and you can pick this up quite easily from Stonetalon Mountains. Head over to the south of Stonetalon Mountain, and you should find a bunch of these around level 30. Whether you’re leveling or max level, this should be a straightforward tame. However, if you are Alliance and you're leveling up, this might be more difficult as it’s a hard zone to get to for Alliance, and there is also a Horde base nearby. Either way, begin your tame and get yourself that Emerald Spirit.

Hexed Craghopper

Next up is the Hexed Craghopper, which is a Cunning pet. This pet has a really cool cursed look that stays after it's tamed, and it also makes a weird sound effect when clicked after being tamed. To get this pet, you'll want to head over to Duskwood, and on the northeast section of the zone, you should be able to find these on the mountain areas.

They are level 60 by default unless you are level-synced to the zone, in which case they should appear at a lower level. But as a max-level character, you should have no problem taming one of these.

Fenryr

The next pet up is going to be Fenryr. If you want a rugged pet that looks like it's been battling for decades, then this is the pet for you—it looks really good. This used to be a somewhat difficult pet to obtain, but nowadays, as a max-level character, you'll have no problems. It is a Wolf, so it’s going to be a Ferocity pet.

To get it, you'll need to head to the Halls of Valor dungeon, which is in Stormheim within the Broken Isles. Make sure you're on dungeon difficulty Mythic, and you also need to do this completely solo—don’t have anyone in your party or raid when trying to enter. Head inside, kill the trash, kill the first boss, and then take the right path towards Fenryr. DPS it down, it will run to its next spot, DPS it down again, and defeat it.

Don’t worry, defeating it is part of the process. Once it's completely defeated, it will despawn but will respawn again in a nearby cave, which is its den. There, you can begin the taming process, and as long as you've met the criteria of doing this solo and on Mythic, you should be able to tame it and get Fenryr as a pet.

Thunderhorn

While we’re in Stormheim, there's another pet to pick up here with a unique visual effect—Thunderhorn. This one is an Oxen pet, meaning it’s a Tenacity pet. You'll find Thunderhorn in the middle of Stormheim, and it has a short respawn time of a couple of minutes, so if it’s been killed or tamed recently, you shouldn’t have to wait long for it to reappear.

It’s a lower-level pet, so once again, max-level characters should have no problem. Begin the tame, and you'll get Thunderhorn very easily. It retains that lightning effect on its horns, which looks great.

Felrot Courser

The next pet up is an older model and kind of ugly, but we like it. This is going to be the Felrot Courser, which you'll find within Felwood. It’s a Tenacity pet since it’s a Stag, and it’s a pretty easy tame. Just head to Felwood, find one of them, and begin taming—pretty straightforward. We do hope this gets a visual update at some point because it could be even better, but for an older-looking skin, we like just how weird and unique it looks.

Faultline

The next pet up is going to be Faultline, a really nice-looking Iron Horde Clefthoof. It’s an exotic pet, so only Beast Mastery Hunters can use it, and it’s also a Ferocity pet. Getting your hands on this pet will be a bit trickier because we need to DPS down a boss without killing him, and as a level 70 character, you’ll be pretty good at doing that. There are two ways to make this more of a guarantee.

The first option is to take off all your gear and your weapon and simply punch the boss down, but be careful of any buffs you have active or talents that might proc damage as that could end up killing it. Alternatively, if you have the World Shrinker toy, which we’d recommend getting anyway because it’s very handy, you can use that to reduce your damage enough with some gear that you won’t kill the boss. Once you’ve got one of those two things, head to the Blackrock Foundry raid, which you’ll find within Gorgrond, and make sure you’re on Mythic difficulty, as otherwise, Faultline won’t appear. Once you’re on Mythic, head inside, and you’ll be able to access this boss as the first boss you fight.

Take the second door on the right when you enter, go around, and you’ll find another path on the right as you curve around. Head inside there, and you’ll find Darmac. Slow DPS him down until Faultline comes out. Once Faultline is out, you can begin the tame and get yourself the pet. If you want two of them, you can Fain Death after the tame, reset the fight, and do the same again to get yourself that second Faultline.

Karkidan

The next pet we're going to talk about was introduced in Dragonflight, and that is Karkidan, a red scalehide-looking pet. It’s a Scalehide, so it’s a Ferocity pet, and you'll find it in the Ohn'ahran Plains. It starts at level 63, so you will need to level a bit into Dragonflight to pick up this pet. If you’re level 70, it should scale to 70, and you’ll be able to pick it up with no problem.

If you’re struggling with the damage it does, you could throw down a Freezing Trap to aid with the tame a bit, but you shouldn’t have many problems. You'll find this in a cave on the south of Ohn'ahran Plains. Head over there, begin the tame, and get Karkidan, which has a nice red color, especially if you’re going for an Aridar theme—maybe a good pet to match with that.

The Kurken

The next pet up is going to be The Kurken, a Core Hound pet, so you will need to be Beast Mastery to tame it, and it will also be Ferocity. It will be a bit of a journey to get this pet if you're Horde. Alliance has it much easier because you can take a portal directly to the Exodar and go from there, but as Horde, you’ll have to do a few things.

First, head to Darkshore and make sure you’re in the phase before the whole tree was burned. Speak to Zidormi if that’s not the case—she'll swap your phasing for you. Then, fly across the sea to Teldrassil, and fly along the south coast to Rut’theran Village.

Here, you'll find three docks on the west side, and there will be a portal you can click that will take you to Azuremyst Isle. From there, it’s just a case of making your way over to The Kurken, and then you can tame it. If you’re a lower-level character, We wouldn’t recommend doing this as it may be tricky, and there are some guards along the way as Horde that will kill you. As a max-level or close-to-max-level Horde character, you should have no problems.

Chimaeron

The next pet up is going to be Chimaeron, and if you like weird and twisted pets, this one’s going to be a good choice for you. It’s a Hydra, which means it’s a Ferocity pet, but it’s open for any Hunter spec to tame.

To get this, head over to the Blackwing Descent raid, which you'll find in Blackrock Mountain at the very top. Fly up there—it doesn't matter which raid size or difficulty you're on, but being on a higher difficulty and raid size means you’re not going to kill the pet accidentally. Once inside, locate Chimaeron and tame it to add this unique pet to your collection.
