What is the Chaos Orb?
The PoE 2 Chaos Orb is a type of currency that allows you to remove a random modifier and then add a new one to replace it. If you have played PoE 1, you know that the Chaos Orb had a completely different function back then.
You see, the Chaos Orb in Path of Exile 1 completely changes all of the modifiers of a rare item. Although getting the modifiers is still RNG-based, what the Chaos Orb could do in the original game enabled you to have a usable piece of gear just by using this single currency.
Fast forward to now, the Chaos Orb combines the functions of the PoE 2 Exalted Orb and Orb of Annulment. GGG can just remove the PoE 2 Orb of Annulment at this point because its purpose is redundant when the new Chaos Orb exists in the game.
How to Use the Chaos Orb
Just like any currency item in Path of Exile 2, you just right-click on the Chaos Orb and then left-click on the item you want to use it on. Items in your inventory that can be altered with a Chaos Orb are highlighted for your convenience.
Remember that the main purpose of the Chaos Orb in Path of Exile 2 is to remove a random modifier and swap it for a new one. Just hope that the recent modifier is something better than the previous one because there are plenty of cases where people got awful mods in return, such as increased light radius or +2 to maximum life.

How to Get the Chaos Orb
So, how can you get your hands on the Chaos Orb in Path of Exile 2? Well, there are a few ways. The first is by eliminating monsters and hoping that they drop the said currency item. We suggest that you use a loot filter to highlight the Chaos Orb (accompanied by a noticeable sound) when it drops.
The second way to obtain the PoE 2 Chaos Orb is via the Currency Exchange. Once you're finished with the campaign and have secured your very own hideout, you can invite Alva into your place.

Always Use Omens on High-Level Crafting
Although there is no concrete way to deterministically add a modifier that you want to an item in Path of Exile 2, there are certain things you can do to somehow stack the odds in your favor. One way to do that is by using items known as Omens.
Omens are exclusive rewards that may appear after completing a Ritual Encounter in maps. That said, there are a few of these items that have something to do with changing the outcome of a craft when used in conjunction with the PoE 2 Chaos Orb. These are the Omen of Whittling, Omen of Sinistral Erasure, and Omen of Dextral Erasure.
Omen of Whittling is the most popular among the three and it's easy to understand why. When you right-click on this item, the next time you use a Chaos Orb, it will remove the modifier with the lowest item level.
To understand how the Omen of Whittling works, let's say that you have a rare Dualstring Bow with the following modifiers:
- 110-134% Increased Physical Damage (ilvl 46)
- Adds (4-6) to (7-10) Cold Damage (ilvl 12)
- 73-85% Increased Elemental Damage with Attacks (ilvl 60)
- 17-19% Increased Attack Speed (ilvl 37)
- +5 to Level of All Projectile Skills (ilvl 81)
- +3.81-4.4% to Critical Hit Chance (ilvl 59)
In the above example, the added cold damage will always be removed when utilizing a Chaos Orb (with Omen of Whittling) because it has the lowest item level among the pool of modifiers listed. That is why the Omen of Whittling is incredibly expensive because of its potential to help you create a mirror-tier item!
Now, there is no way of knowing the item level of a modifier in-game. Fortunately, there are resources out there that will tell you that information. With how incredibly useful the Omen of Whittling is, we recommend that you only use it on a good item that is one modifier away from being great!
Payment in the Exchange
The Chaos Orb is more valuable than Exalted Orbs, especially after a month of a new league. That said, you can use the Chaos Orb as a currency for trading other consumable items, such as Gemcutter's Prisms, Armourer's Scraps, and Glassblower's Baubles, among others.
Don't Leave Chests Unopened
A lot of Path of Exile 2 players do not find it particularly good to open chests because they think that they don't hold anything of value. However, that is actually not true!
Although seemingly ordinary, you should always interact with chests and other breakable objects because these things might hide a treasure inside, such as the PoE 2 Chaos Orb!
Continuously Farm the Best Maps
When you are in the endgame already and you're able to interact with the Map Device, make sure to look for the best maps in Path of Exile 2 on the Atlas. The ones we recommend include the Savannah, Steaming Springs, Creek, Steppe, and Rustbowl. These maps have good layouts, making them ideal for additional content like Breach and Delirium.
Never Go Inside Maps without Juicing Waystones
Waystones in Path of Exile 2 allow you to enter maps. These things can be upgraded by using crafting currencies, such as the Orb of Transmutation, Orb of Augmentation, Regal Orb, and Exalted Orb. You can even take things a step further and corrupt them with PoE 2 Vaal Orbs for some awesome modifiers (if you are lucky)!
