The Best Races for Enhancement Shamans
Race | Racial Passive Name | Racial Passive Effect |
Goblin | Time is Money | Cash in on a one percent increase to Haste |
Troll | Berserking | Increases your haste by ten percent for twelve seconds |
Tauren | Brawn | Critical strike damage and healing increased by two percent |
Dwarf | Might of the Mountain | Critical strike damage and healing increased by two percent |
If you’re looking for the best of the best, consider going with a Goblin to get the most out of your Haste, as it’s a valuable secondary stat for the Enhancement Shaman. However, in the end, the choice is yours; if you’d rather just play the race you like or the race that fits your character concept, that’s perfectly fine too.
Main Shaman Tree
Next up, we’ll take a look at the main tree for Shamans, which offers plenty of diversity when it comes to both self-sustain and utility. The must-have talents for Enhancement Shamans are Lava Burst, Wind Shear, Flurry, and Wind Rush Totem. Keep in mind that you can also consider adding Hex for a single-target crowd-control spell, and Totemic Projection for those times when you need to move your totems around.
Physical Enhancement Trees
If you’re looking to go the physical route, these are the most important talents to consider:
- Raging Maelstrom: Up to ten stacks of Maelstrom Weapon with this talent, making it more forgiving if you generate more than five.
- Storm's Wrath: Increase your chances of triggering Windfury Weapon.
- Thorim's Invocation: Your keystone talent, providing the greatest value in a physical build.
Dungeon Talents:
- Sundering: Big damage and stun.
- Crash Lightning: Splash damage and combo with your Stormstrike.
- Fire Nova: Even if it doesn’t do too much damage, it’s a quick way to get five stacks of Maelstrom Weapon.
- Alpha Wolf: This keystone talent causes your Feral Spirits to deal area-of-effect damage.
Raid Talents:
- Ice Strike: Boosts your single-target damage, plus it buffs your Frost Shock.
- Elemental Blast: A must-have for single-target damage.
- Windfury Totem: More beneficial in a raid group than a five-person dungeon group.
- Ascendance: Control when you use Ascendance, as opposed to Deeply Rooted Elements, which activates randomly.
Elementalist Enhancement Trees
If you’d like to go the Elementalist route, these are the main talents you should consider:
- Raging Maelstrom: Same as physical build.
- Storm's Wrath: Same as physical build.
- Ashen Catalyst | Lashing Flames: Enhances your Flame Shock and Lava Lash abilities.
- Splintered Elements: Huge Haste buff.
- Elemental Spirits: Reactive gameplay that can truly pay off if you react properly to your Feral Spirits’ elements.
Dungeon Talents:
- Fire Nova: Generate more damage if your Feral Spirits are summoned as fire wolves.
- Crash Lightning: Same as physical build.
Raid Talents:
- Ice Strike: Same as physical build.
- Windfury Totem: Same as physical build.
Gameplay
As you’re playing an Enhancement Shaman, always remember to slap on your Windfury Weapon, Flametongue Weapon, and Lightning Shield. Additionally, keep your Flame Shock active as much as possible, and don’t forget to reapply it either manually or with Lava Lash before it wears off. Be careful not to overuse your Maelstrom Weapon generators, as you risk having downtime after spending those stacks if all your generators are on cooldown.
For single-target damage, Lava Burst or Elemental Blast should be your primary Maelstrom Weapon spenders, while Chain Lightning should be your primary area-of-effect spender. Use Lightning Bolt only if your Lava Burst is on cooldown.
Stat Priority
The stat priority for physical and elementalist builds differ slightly, so be sure to use the following two tables to choose the right stat priority depending on which build you’re playing as.
Physical Build | Elementalist Build |
Haste | Mastery |
Mastery | Haste |
Versatility or /Critical Strike | Versatility or /Critical Strike |
Both builds benefit from having both Haste and Mastery, though the relative importance of each will depend on the build.
Gems
The gems you use will also be determined by your chosen build. As physical builds tend to favour Haste over Mastery, Keen Ysemerald is the best choice here as it boosts both Haste and Mastery. On the other hand, elementalist builds tend to favour Mastery over Haste and therefore, Keen Neltharite.
