Lore is a budget-friendly Ort + Sol runeword made in 2-socket helms. It's one of the earliest useful runewords in D2R, providing +1 to All Skills at extremely low cost. Lore is the go-to helm for early ladder progression and leveling before affording Harlequin Crest (Shako).
Stats:
+1 To All Skills
+10 To Energy
+2 To Mana After Each Kill
Lightning Resist +30%
Damage Reduced By 7
+2 To Light Radius
Required Level: 27
Why These Matter: +1 to All Skills is massive for leveling - boosts every skill's damage, duration, radius, etc. 30% lightning resistance helps reach Hell difficulty resistance caps. +2 mana after kill solves early-game mana issues. 7 damage reduction adds tankiness.
Helm Types and Defense:
War Hat (exceptional): 20-45 defense
Other 2-socket options: Helm (3-11 def), Sallet (18-40 def), Casque (24-36 def)
War Hat provides balanced defense for exceptional tier helm. It's not elite tier (would be Bone Visage) but works well for budget runeword.
Why Not Elite Base? Elite helms require higher strength/level. War Hat needs only 20 strength and level 27 total (including Lore). Accessibility matters for early progression.
Socket Count: War Hat can roll 1-2 sockets naturally. Larzuk quest guarantees 2 sockets. Always use 2-socket War Hat for Lore.
Leveling (Level 27-65): Lore is THE helm for leveling characters. +1 skills dramatically increases clear speed through Nightmare and early Hell difficulty.
Early Ladder (First Week): Before Harlequin Crests drop and become affordable, Lore fills the helm slot perfectly. Every ladder character should make Lore day 1.
Budget Builds: New players or seasonal characters without wealth use Lore until affording Shako (costs Ist-Vex rune) or rare circlets with +2 skills.
Replacement Timeline:
Level 27-65: Use Lore
Level 65-75: Upgrade to Harlequin Crest if you can afford it
Level 75+: Rare circlets with +2 skills, FCR, life, resistances surpass Lore and Shako for specific builds
vs Harlequin Crest (Shako): Shako: +2 skills, +2 attributes, +10% damage reduction, 50% MF, +life/mana Lore: +1 skill, 30% lightning res, +2 mana per kill Winner: Shako for endgame, Lore for budget/leveling
vs Rare Circlets (+2 Skills / 20% FCR): Perfect circlets: +2 skills, 20% FCR, life, resistances Lore: +1 skill, no FCR Winner: Rare circlets for min-maxed builds, Lore for budget
vs Peasant Crown (Unique War Hat): Peasant Crown: +1 skills, replenish life, +20 vitality, +15 energy, 6% life/mana stolen Lore: +1 skills, +10 energy, +2 mana per kill, 30% light res Winner: Peasant Crown for melee, Lore for casters
vs Tarnhelm: Tarnhelm: +1 skills, 25-50% MF, +1 all attributes Lore: +1 skills, 30% lightning res Winner: Tarnhelm for magic finding, Lore for progression
Ort Rune:
Drops commonly in Act 1-2 Nightmare
Countess Nightmare can drop Ort
Most players find 5-10 Ort runes before reaching Hell difficulty
Sol Rune:
Drops in Nightmare Act 4-5, Hell Act 1-3
Slightly less common than Ort but still farmable
Can cube from 3 Amn runes if needed
Total Cost: Free Both runes are so common that Lore costs essentially nothing. The base (2-socket War Hat) is usually the limiting factor, not runes.
Merchant Shopping: Buy War Hats from Act 1-5 merchants, check for 2 sockets. Reset merchant by exiting and re-entering game. Can find 2-socket War Hat within 10-30 shop refreshes.
Larzuk Quest: Use Larzuk quest reward on white War Hat for guaranteed 2 sockets. However, Larzuk quests are limited (3 per character) - consider saving for more valuable items.
Cube Recipe: Ral + Amn + Perfect Amethyst + War Hat = Socketed War Hat (1-2 sockets random). Risky - might get 1 socket instead of 2.
Farming Drops: White War Hats with 2 sockets can drop in Nightmare Act 4-5. Very rare drop - shopping is faster.
Upgrade Triggers:
Found or bought Harlequin Crest (Shako)
Found rare circlet with +2 skills and good secondaries
Reached level 75+ and can afford perfect rare circlet
Switching to build that needs FCR breakpoint (Lore has no FCR)
Keep Lore As Backup: Even after upgrading, keep Lore in stash. Useful for:
Leveling new characters
Transferring to other characters
Backup helm if main helm breaks (Hardcore)
Starting next ladder season
Socket Frustration: Finding or cubing 2-socket War Hat can take hours of merchant shopping or failed cube recipes. Purchasing saves frustration.
Ladder Day 1 Advantage: Having Lore immediately on ladder start lets you farm Nightmare/Hell faster than players still looking for base + runes. Time saved compounds over ladder season.
Perfect Roll Option: Some sellers offer superior War Hats with enhanced defense. Perfect superior Lore provides extra tankiness (minimal but nice).
Convenience: For players who don't enjoy crafting/cubing/shopping, buying completed Lore ready-to-use is worth small cost.
For farming uniques and set items, Tarnhelm’s 25–50% Magic Find is better. For progression, survivability, and clear speed, Lore’s +1 to all skills is stronger. Use Lore while leveling and Tarnhelm when doing dedicated Magic Find runs.
Yes, but it’s not recommended. Elite helms offer higher defense, but Lore grants the same +1 skill regardless of base. Elite bases are better saved for stronger runewords like Delirium or Dream.
Yes. Mercenaries can equip Lore and benefit from the +1 to skills, increasing aura levels such as Might or Defiance. However, helms like Tal Rasha’s Horadric Crest or Andariel’s Visage are usually better for mercenary survivability.
No. Lore is a completed runeword and cannot be socketed or modified further after creation.
All classes benefit from +1 to all skills. Skill-dependent classes like Sorceress, Necromancer, Paladin, and Druid gain the most value. Barbarians and Amazons benefit slightly less but still find it useful.
Lore is commonly used by budget builds until around level 80. More optimized builds often replace it by level 70 with items like Harlequin Crest or high-end rare circlets. Lore is a stepping stone, not an endgame helm.
No. There is no upgrade recipe for runewords. To use an elite base, you would need to make a completely new Lore, which is generally not worth it.
Yes. Ort and Sol runes are very common, and making Lore takes very little time. It provides a noticeable power boost during leveling for nearly every build.
