Bul-Kathos' Tribal Guardian is a set Mythical Sword and one half of the Bul-Kathos' Children set (the other piece being Bul-Kathos' Sacred Charge Colossus Blade). This dual-wielding sword set was designed specifically for Barbarians, named after the legendary first Barbarian of Sanctuary.
One-Hand Damage: 120-150 (135 average)
+200% Enhanced Damage
+50 Poison Damage Over 2 Seconds
Fire Resist +50%
+20 To Strength
+20% Increased Attack Speed
Required Level: 66
Required Strength: 147, Dexterity: 124
Why These Matter: The +20% IAS helps reach Whirlwind and Frenzy breakpoints. +50% fire resistance fills a common resistance gap. +20 strength frees 20 points for vitality investment.
+2 To All Skill Levels
+200 To Attack Rating
+200% Damage To Demons
+200% Damage To Undead
+20 Fire Damage
+25 Defense
The +2 All Skills Impact: This boosts Battle Orders (more life/mana), Shout (more defense), Whirlwind damage, Find Item effectiveness, and all other Barbarian skills. The +2 skills is the primary reason to use this set.
Whirlwind Barbarian (Speed Farming): BK set is popular for fast Travincal/Chaos Sanctuary farming. The set provides 25% FRW total (from partial bonuses), letting you zip between mob packs. Damage is lower than Grief but movement speed compensates in dense areas.
Horking Barbarian (Magic Finding): The +2 all skills boosts Find Item level significantly. Higher Find Item level = better chances of finding items from corpses. BK set is preferred for Travincal horkers who value speed over raw damage.
Frenzy Barbarian (Alternative): Dual-wielding BK set provides solid Frenzy attack speed. Not optimal compared to dual Grief, but works well for budget Frenzy builds. The +2 skills helps reach level 40+ Frenzy.
PvP Whirlwind (Niche): Some PvP WW barbs use BK set for the balanced stats. The 25% FRW helps chase targets, and +200% demon/undead damage doesn't matter in PvP (all damage goes to players).
Needs Sacred Charge to Shine: Without the second sword, you lose +2 skills and +200% demon/undead damage - the two best bonuses. Single Tribal Guardian is worthless for endgame builds.
Set Bonus Dependency: Partial set bonus (2 pieces) gives all the important stats. You want both pieces or neither.
Better Single Sword Options Exist: If using one sword only, Grief, Lightsabre, Azurewrath, or Death all outperform lone Tribal Guardian.
Drop Locations:
Hell Baal (best drop rate for both pieces)
Diablo Hell difficulty
Nihlathak Hell difficulty
Any area level 85+ zones
Set Completion Difficulty: Finding both pieces through self-farming takes 500-1500 Baal runs on average. Most players trade for the set rather than farming both pieces.
Trading Value: Full BK set trades for Mal-Um rune typically. Individual pieces trade for Lem-Pul. Very affordable compared to high-end runewords.
Set Completion Urgency: If you've found Sacred Charge (Colossus Blade) but need Tribal Guardian to complete the set, purchasing saves 200-400 hours of targeted farming.
Ladder Start Efficiency: BK set is excellent starter gear for ladder Barbarians. Having it day 1-2 lets you farm Hell content immediately while saving for Grief. Purchasing provides competitive advantage early ladder.
Budget Build Enabler: New Barbarians need affordable dual-wield options. BK set costs fraction of Grief (Mal vs Lo rune) while providing 70% of performance. Purchasing lets budget players enjoy endgame content.
Trading Time Waste: Finding someone selling both pieces simultaneously is tedious. Buying both together saves hours of trade negotiation and coordination.
Yes, technically you can, but it’s weak on its own. Without Sacred Charge, you lose important set bonuses like +2 to skills and +200% damage to demons and undead. There are better options for single-sword builds.
Other classes can meet the strength and dexterity requirements, but the skill bonuses and playstyle are clearly designed for Barbarians. Mercenaries can equip the set, but they gain very little benefit from it.
No. Set items cannot be socketed using the Larzuk quest or Horadric Cube recipes. Bul-Kathos’ Tribal Guardian has fixed stats and no socket options.
Not really. Ethereal set weapons still lose durability and do not have self-repair. Since the defense bonus does not apply to weapons, ethereal versions provide no meaningful benefit and will eventually break.
No. There is no upgrade recipe for set items, and the Bul-Kathos set already uses elite-tier bases (Mythical Sword and Colossus Blade).
The Immortal King set focuses on survivability with high defense and resistances but offers lower damage. The Bul-Kathos set is more offense-oriented and better suited for faster farming. IK is ideal for tanky builds, while BK excels at speed-focused gameplay.
Yes, but doing so removes all set bonuses. You would end up with two average swords without the +2 skills or bonus damage to demons and undead, making this setup inefficient.
Infinity is the best choice due to its Conviction aura, which breaks enemy immunities and boosts overall damage. Insight is a good option for mana sustain, while Pride provides a Concentration aura for added physical damage.
