Demon Machine is a unique Chu-Ko-Nu (elite repeating crossbow) with exceptional attack speed and explosive arrow capability. Despite being overshadowed by Windforce and rare bows in modern meta, Demon Machine offers unique mechanics that make it interesting for specific builds.
Base Stats:
Damage: 60-193 to 237-355 (varies with ED roll)
+123-255% Enhanced Damage
+66% Increased Attack Speed
Piercing Attack (33%)
Fires Explosive Arrows
Adds 60-120 Fire Damage
Why These Matter: The IAS bonus is massive - helps reach fastest attack speed breakpoints easily. Explosive arrows deal splash damage (similar to Multishot visually). Piercing Attack lets arrows hit multiple enemies in line.
Hidden Mechanics: Explosive arrows create 3-yard radius splash damage. This turns every shot into small AoE effect. Combined with Piercing Attack, one arrow can damage 5-8 enemies if positioned correctly.
Attack Speed: Chu-Ko-Nu has [-60] speed modifier - fastest base crossbow in game. Combined with Demon Machine's +66% IAS, you reach maximum attack speed breakpoint with minimal gear investment.
Visual Style: Chu-Ko-Nu is repeating crossbow (fires bolts rapidly like machine gun). Demon Machine maintains this visual while adding explosive effects. One of the coolest weapon visuals in D2R.
Requirements: Level 58 required. Strength: 80, Dexterity: 95 - relatively low compared to other elite crossbows. Easy to equip early in ladder or fresh characters.
Drop Sources:
Mephisto Hell difficulty (good chance, fast runs)
Diablo Hell difficulty
Baal Hell difficulty
Pindle runs (fast unique farming)
Area level 85+ locations
Drop Rate: Demon Machine is rare but farmable. Expect 1 Demon Machine per 1,000-2,000 Mephisto runs. Much more common than elite unique swords or armors.
Gambling: Gambling crossbows from Gheed can yield Demon Machine, but inefficient. Focus on farming instead.
Budget Multishot Amazon: Before affording Windforce or Faith, Demon Machine provides solid DPS for Multishot builds. The explosive arrows add AoE damage that stacks with Multishot's multiple projectiles.
Strafe Amazon: Demon Machine's IAS makes reaching 7-frame Strafe breakpoint easy. Explosive arrows mean each Strafe shot deals splash damage. Clears mob packs faster than single-target bows.
Fun/Casual Build: Demon Machine isn't endgame BIS, but it's fun to use due to rapid-fire crossbow aesthetic and explosive visual effects. Good for players who value style over efficiency.
Upgrade Process: Demon Machine drops as Chu-Ko-Nu (elite base) so it's already upgraded. No upgrading needed unlike exceptional uniques.
Socket Quest: Use Larzuk's Act 5 quest to add 1 socket to Demon Machine. Socket with 40% ED / 15% IAS jewel or 15% IAS / Max Damage jewel.
Gem Socketing: If using for budget build, socket Perfect Topaz for +24 lightning damage or Perfect Ruby for +20 fire damage. Scales with attack speed.
Farming Repetition: While Demon Machine drops more frequently than The Grandfather, farming 1,000-2,000 Mephisto runs still takes 33-66 hours. Purchasing lets you skip this grind and start playing Amazon build immediately.
Perfect Roll Hunting: Demon Machine has variable ED (123-255%). Perfect 255% ED roll is roughly 10x rarer than average roll. Buying perfect roll saves 300-600 hours of farming.
Ladder Start Advantage: Having Demon Machine day 1 of ladder season puts you ahead of 90% of Amazon players. Speeds up early Hell difficulty farming significantly.
Budget Build Enabler: Demon Machine costs fraction of Windforce/Faith but enables Hell viable Amazon builds. Purchasing it lets you farm Hell content to eventually afford the true endgame bow.
It depends on your goal. Buriza offers 100% pierce compared to Demon Machine’s 33% and also freezes enemies, making it safer and better for crowd control. Demon Machine slightly wins in raw DPS due to explosive arrows, but Buriza provides more safety and control.
No, it’s not recommended. PvP Bowazon builds relying on Guided Arrow generally require Windforce or high-end rare bows. Demon Machine lacks the damage and speed needed for competitive PvP.
Yes. Every arrow fired with Multishot becomes explosive, creating wide-area fire splash damage across the screen. This makes Demon Machine visually impressive and effective for clearing groups.
Act I Rogue mercenaries can equip crossbows, but Demon Machine is not an optimal choice. They usually perform better with Faith for the Fanaticism aura or Witchwild String for Magic Arrow and utility effects.
Using the Larzuk quest adds a maximum of one socket. For best damage output, socket it with a 40% Enhanced Damage and 15% Increased Attack Speed jewel.
Yes, for mid-tier geared characters. With strong support gear such as Fortitude armor and an Infinity-equipped mercenary, Demon Machine can handle Hell Baal runs, though it is slower than Windforce.
No. Demon Machine is already an elite base (Chu-Ko-Nu) and cannot be upgraded further. Only normal or exceptional items can be upgraded.
Low rolls typically trade for Lem–Pul, mid rolls for Pul–Um, and perfect rolls fors for Um–Mal. Overall, it is relatively inexpensive compared to many elite unique weapons.
