Fortitude is an El + Sol + Dol + Lo runeword made in 4-socket body armor. It's one of the best mercenary armors in the game and solid choice for melee physical damage dealers. The Lo rune requirement makes it expensive but the power level justifies the cost.
Core Stats:
+300% Enhanced Damage
+200% Enhanced Defense (varies 200-225%)
+15 Defense
+1-1.5 Life per character level (148.5 life at 99)
+25-30% to All Resistances
+12% Damage Taken Goes to Mana
+1 to Light Radius
Hidden Effects:
20% Chance to cast Level 15 Chilling Armor when struck
+0.25-1.5 Mana per character level (148.5 mana at 99)
Grants level 20 Holy Fire aura when equipped
Why These Matter: The +300% ED is multiplicative with weapon damage - creates enormous DPS boost. Holy Fire aura adds 1056-1188 fire damage to physical attacks. +25-30% all res helps reach resistance caps easily.
Why Dusk Shroud?
Base Defense: 361-467
Strength Requirement: 77 (very low for elite armor)
Zero dexterity requirement
Light armor = no movement speed penalty
Defense After Fortitude: With 200% ED, Dusk Shroud reaches 1083-1401 defense before other defense modifiers. Add Holy Shield or Defiance aura and defense exceeds 2000+.
Str Requirement Importance: Low 77 strength lets you invest more points into Vitality. Comparable armors like Archon Plate require 103 str (26 more points = 26 vitality or 52 life).
Ethereal Considerations: Ethereal Dusk Shroud has 50% more defense but cannot be repaired. Only make ethereal Fortitude for mercenaries (they have built-in self-repair). Players should use non-eth.
Act 2 Mercenary (Most Common): Fortitude mercenary is standard for most builds. Holy Fire aura adds elemental damage that helps break physical immunes. Defense keeps merc alive. Pair with Insight or Infinity weapon.
Whirlwind Barbarian: Fortitude provides huge DPS boost for WW Barb. Holy Fire aura adds 1000+ fire damage per hit. +300% ED multiplies weapon damage. One of top 3 armor choices for WW builds.
Zealot Paladin: Fast-attacking Zeal benefits from Holy Fire aura (applies per hit). +300% ED boost is substantial. Competes with Chains of Honor for best Paladin armor.
Frenzy Barbarian: Dual-wielding with fast attack speed means Holy Fire aura applies constantly. +300% ED affects both weapons. Fortitude is BIS armor for Frenzy.
Socket Requirements: Need exactly 4 sockets. Dusk Shroud, Archon Plate, or Great Hauberk are popular choices. Use Larzuk quest on white (non-magic) armor for guaranteed max sockets.
Superior Base Hunting: Look for superior (blue text) armor with +15% Enhanced Defense. This adds significantly to final defense. Superior Dusk Shroud with 15% ED is ideal base.
Ethereal for Mercenaries: Farm ethereal superior Dusk Shroud for mercenary Fortitude. Ethereal adds 50% defense (makes merc tankier) and mercs have self-repair (durability doesn't matter).
Base Farming Locations:
Lower Kurast super chests (fast armor base runs)
Hell Mausoleum, Pit, Ancient Tunnels
Chaos Sanctuary, Worldstone Keep
Expect 5-15 hours farming for perfect superior eth base
Lo Rune Scarcity: Lo rune has 1 in 28,000 drop rate from Hell Baal. Self-finding Lo takes 900+ hours of dedicated rune farming on average. Most players never self-find Lo.
Perfect Base Hunting: Superior ethereal Dusk Shroud with 15% ED and 4 sockets is extremely rare. Farming one takes 20-40 hours. Then you still need the runes.
Mercenary Survivability: Without Fortitude, Act 2 mercs die frequently in Hell content. Buying Fortitude immediately makes your merc tanky enough for endgame. This enables your entire build.
Ladder Advantage: Having Fortitude merc day 1 of ladder lets you farm Hell safely while others are struggling in Nightmare. Accelerates wealth accumulation dramatically.
Yes, Fortitude can be made in both 4-socket weapons and armors, but making it in a weapon is generally wasteful. Fortitude is top-tier as armor, while weapons like Grief or Breath of the Dying outperform it. Fortitude should almost always be made in armor.
No. Auras of the same type do not stack. The highest-level aura takes priority. Since Fortitude provides a level 20 Holy Fire aura, it will override most Paladin Holy Fire auras if they are lower level.
In most cases, make it for your mercenary first. Mercenary survivability benefits nearly all builds. The main exception is Whirlwind Barbarians, who gain significant DPS from wearing Fortitude themselves.
Yes, but many Concentration Barbarians prefer Enigma for the mobility provided by Teleport. Fortitude is viable, but Enigma offers greater versatility overall.
No. Ethereal items lose durability and will eventually break when used by players. Only mercenaries can safely use ethereal Fortitude due to their built-in self-repair. Never make an ethereal Fortitude for your character.
Archon Plate has about 30–50 more base defense. After Fortitude’s enhanced defense modifier, this becomes roughly 60–100 more final defense. The difference is minimal, and Dusk Shroud’s lower strength requirement is often more valuable.
Yes, the Holy Fire aura adds fire damage to arrows. However, the +300% enhanced damage does not directly increase bow damage. Many Amazon builds prefer alternatives like Chains of Honor for better overall benefits.
Technically yes, but it’s a very poor choice. Shields have far better runewords such as Spirit or Phoenix. Fortitude runes should never be used in a shield.
