What is Insight?

Insight is a Ral + Tir + Tal + Sol runeword made in 4-socket polearms or staves. It's the single most impactful mercenary weapon in D2R due to its Meditation aura, which provides massive mana regeneration to your entire party. Ethereal Great Poleaxe is one of the best bases due to high damage and mercenary self-repair.

Insight Runeword Stats

Core Stats:

  • Level 12-17 Meditation Aura When Equipped (varies based on Tir rune level)

  • +35% Faster Cast Rate (useless on mercs, relevant for caster staff Insights)

  • +200-260% Enhanced Damage (varies)

  • +9 To Minimum Damage

  • 180-250% Bonus to Attack Rating (varies)

  • Adds 5-30 Fire Damage

  • +75 Poison Damage Over 5 Seconds

  • +1-6 To Critical Strike (varies)

  • +5 To All Attributes

  • +2 To Mana After Each Kill

  • 23% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items

Meditation Aura Mechanics:

  • Level 12 Meditation: 195% mana regeneration

  • Level 17 Meditation: 295% mana regeneration

  • Regenerates ~4-5% of maximum mana per second

  • Stacks with Warmth, mana per kill, and other mana regen sources

Why Ethereal Great Poleaxe?

Ethereal Bonus: Ethereal weapons have 50% higher base damage but lose durability. For mercs, this is perfect because:

  • Mercenaries have self-repair (never lose durability)

  • 50% more base damage = massively higher merc DPS

  • No downside whatsoever for merc weapons

Great Poleaxe Specifics:

  • Base Damage: 46-127 (normal) → 69-191 (ethereal)

  • Range: 5 (longest reach)

  • Attack Speed: [0] (fast)

  • Required Strength: 179 → 134 (ethereal reduces req)

  • Required Dexterity: 99 → 74 (ethereal reduces req)

  • Required Level: 63

vs Other Polearm Bases:

  • Thresher: Faster attack speed [-10], lower damage

  • Giant Thresher: Fastest [-10], very high str requirement

  • Colossus Voulge: High damage, slow [-15] speed

  • Great Poleaxe: Balanced - good damage, good speed, reasonable requirements

For Insight specifically, Great Poleaxe balances damage and speed well. Thresher is faster but Meditation aura matters more than merc killing speed.

Best Builds Using Insight Merc

Every Caster Build:

  • Hammerdin (spams Blessed Hammer infinitely)

  • Blizzard/Frozen Orb Sorceress (never runs out of mana)

  • Bone Necromancer (endless Bone Spear)

  • Wind Druid (Tornado/Hurricane spam)

  • Fire Sorceress (Fireball/Meteor spam)

  • Lightning Sorceress (pre-Infinity, Meditation sustains Nova/Chain Lightning)

Without Insight merc, casters chug mana potions constantly. With Insight, potions become unnecessary.

Summoner Builds:

  • Necromancer summoners benefit from Meditation for Corpse Explosion spam

  • Druid summoners benefit for recasting summons and Cyclone Armor

Physical Builds (Pre-Infinity): Even physical builds benefit from Meditation if they use mana-intensive skills (Whirlwind, Zeal, Frenzy) before affording mana leech gear.

Insight vs Infinity (Mercenary Weapon Debate)

Insight Pros:

  • Extremely cheap (Ral + Tir + Tal + Sol = free/Lem rune total)

  • Solves all mana problems permanently

  • Allows casters to function without mana per kill or % mana stolen

  • Available from level 27 (can use in Nightmare difficulty)

Insight Cons:

  • No Conviction aura (doesn't break immunities)

  • Lower damage than Infinity

  • Eventually replaced by Infinity for most builds

Infinity Pros:

  • Level 12 Conviction aura breaks most lightning/cold/fire immunities

  • Dramatically increases elemental damage (lowers enemy resistances)

  • Enables builds that were previously immune-blocked

Infinity Cons:

  • Costs 2 Ber runes (Ber + Mal + Ber + Ist = 2+ Ber runes)

  • Doesn't solve mana issues (need mana per kill or Warmth)

  • Much harder to afford

Progression Path: Start with Insight (ladder day 1-2) → Use until you can afford Infinity (weeks/months later) → Keep Insight as backup for mana-intensive farming builds

Making Insight: Rune Requirements

Rune Costs:

  • Ral: Common, drops frequently in Nightmare

  • Tir: Common, drops frequently in Nightmare/Hell Act 1

  • Tal: Common, drops frequently in Nightmare/Hell Act 1-2

  • Sol: Uncommon, drops in Hell Act 1-3, can cube from 3 Amn runes

Total cost: Essentially free. Most players find all runes within first few hours of Hell difficulty farming.

Base Requirements: Finding 4-socket polearm is harder than finding runes. Options:

  • Farm white polearms, use Larzuk quest for sockets

  • Buy from merchants, check for 4 sockets

  • Cube recipe (random sockets, risky)

  • Trade for bases (cheap, Lem-Pul rune)

Variable Rolls on Insight

Critical Variable: Enhanced Damage (200-260%)

  • Low roll (200-220% ED): Mediocre merc damage

  • Mid roll (230-240% ED): Acceptable

  • High roll (250-260% ED): Excellent merc damage

Critical Variable: Attack Rating (180-250%)

  • Affects merc hit chance significantly

  • 250% AR: Merc rarely misses

  • 180% AR: Merc misses 10-20% more often

Less Important Variables:

  • Critical Strike (+1-6): Nice bonus but unreliable

  • Meditation Level (12-17): Even level 12 provides infinite mana for most builds

Perfect Insight: 260% ED, 250% AR, +6 Critical Strike, Level 17 Meditation. Trades for Ist-Vex rune despite cheap base cost.

Why Purchase Ethereal Insight Great Poleaxe

Base Farming Time: Perfect superior ethereal Great Poleaxe with 15% ED takes 30-60 hours of dedicated farming. Then you still need to socket and make Insight.

Variable Roll Optimization: Average Insight has 230% ED / 215% AR. Perfect Insight has 260% ED / 250% AR. The 30% ED and 35% AR difference is substantial for merc survival and killing speed.

Ladder Start Advantage: Having Insight day 1 lets you farm Hell content immediately without mana issues. Players without Insight chug potions constantly and farm 50% slower.

Opportunity Cost: Time spent farming perfect ethereal base could be spent farming with purchased Insight equipped, finding high runes and uniques that fund the purchase cost.

FAQ:

Can I use non-ethereal polearms for Insight?

Yes, Insight works in non-ethereal polearms. However, you lose the 50% bonus damage that ethereal weapons provide. Since mercenaries do not consume durability, Insight should almost always be made in an ethereal base for maximum damage.

Does Insight work in staves for Sorceress?

Yes. Sorceresses can make Insight in a 4-socket staff and use it themselves. However, most Sorceresses prefer Spirit or Heart of the Oak for +skills. Insight staves are a niche option, mainly for early-game or leveling.

What mercenary should use Insight?

The most popular choice is an Act 2 Nightmare Offensive mercenary, which provides the Might aura for added physical damage. An alternative is an Act 2 Hell Defensive mercenary for the Defiance aura if you want a tankier merc.

Can Insight break immunities?

No. Insight provides the Meditation aura, which increases mana regeneration. It does not provide Conviction and cannot break enemy immunities. Infinity is required for that purpose.

Should I make multiple Insights?

No. One Insight per character is usually enough. If you later switch to a physical build, you can replace Insight with Infinity or Pride on your mercenary.

How do I keep my Insight mercenary alive?

Use survivability-focused gear such as Fortitude or Treachery armor, along with Andariel’s Visage or Vampire Gaze as a helm. These items significantly improve mercenary durability.

Does Meditation aura level matter much?

Not significantly. Level 12 Meditation provides about 195% mana regeneration, while level 17 provides around 295%. Both levels effectively give near-infinite mana for most builds, so lower rolls are perfectly acceptable.

Can I use Insight on Act 1 or Act 5 mercenaries?

Act 1 mercenaries cannot equip polearms, as they use bows only. Act 5 mercenaries can equip polearms but do not provide the Might aura. Act 2 mercenaries remain the best choice for Insight.
