Jewels are socketable items that can be inserted into socketed weapons, armor, helms, and shields. Enhanced Damage (ED) jewels provide +damage percentage ranging from 10-40% depending on rarity and roll quality. Unlike gems, jewels have multiple affixes simultaneously.
Baal runs on Hell difficulty (highest jewelry drop rate)
Pindle runs (fast boss kill with good jewelry drops)
Lower Kurast super chest runs
Travincal Council members
Any area level 85+ in Hell difficulty
Drop Rates: Jewels are rare drops compared to gems and runes. Roughly 1 jewel drops per 500-1000 monster kills in appropriate areas. Magic and rare jewels are more common than unique jewels (Rainbow Facet).
Quality Levels:
Magic jewels (blue): 1-2 affixes
Rare jewels (yellow): 3-6 affixes
Unique jewels (gold): Fixed affixes (Rainbow Facets only)
ED/IAS (Enhanced Damage + Increased Attack Speed): Most valuable combination for weapons. 40% ED + 15% IAS jewel trades for Ber-Jah rune range. Perfect for socketing into Windforce, Buriza, or rare weapons.
ED/Max Damage: Second most valuable. 40% ED + 15 max damage adds massive flat damage to weapons. Works especially well with fast-attacking weapons (Phase Blades, Berserker Axes).
ED/-Requirements: Reduces strength/dexterity requirements to equip items. 30% ED + -15% requirements lets characters use high-end gear with fewer stat points invested.
ED/Life: Defensive option. 30% ED + 20 life works well in helms and armor. Adds damage while improving survivability.
Weapons First: 40% ED jewels belong in weapons for maximum impact. Each 40% ED jewel in weapon multiplies your total damage by 1.4x.
Helms Second: Socketing ED/IAS jewels in rare circlets creates powerful alternatives to Harlequin Crest for physical builds. 2 sockets with 40% ED/15% IAS jewels = 80% ED and 30% IAS.
Armor Third: ED jewels in armor provide smaller benefit than weapons. Only socket armor if you have excess perfect jewels.
Shields Last: Generally not worth socketing ED jewels in shields unless you have surplus. Spirit runeword or Splendor provide better overall stats.
40% Enhanced Damage: Maximum possible roll for enhanced damage prefix. Anything less than 35% ED is considered mediocre.
15% Increased Attack Speed: Maximum IAS suffix. Combined with 40% ED, this is the most valuable jewel combination in the game.
15 Max Damage: Maximum flat damage suffix. Adds substantial DPS to fast weapons.
20% Elemental Resistance: Maximum single-resist roll. Rare jewels can have multiple resist affixes simultaneously.
Astronomical Drop Rates: Finding a 40% ED / 15% IAS jewel has roughly 1 in 50,000 jewel drop odds. You'll find multiple high runes before finding one perfect jewel. Most players never self-find a 40/15 jewel in years of playing.
Socket Permanence: Once socketed, jewels cannot be removed without destroying them. Using a mediocre jewel (25% ED) permanently wastes that socket. Buying perfect jewels ensures you don't regret your socketing choice.
Build Optimization: The difference between 25% ED and 40% ED jewels is roughly 20-30% total damage increase on min-maxed builds. That's the gap between clearing Hell Baal in 2 minutes vs 3 minutes.
Completion vs Perfection: Finding "good enough" jewels (30% ED) takes weeks. Finding perfect jewels (40% ED/15% IAS) takes years. Purchasing lets you perfect your build now instead of settling.
Gems have fixed stats based on their type and quality, such as a Perfect Ruby providing +40% fire resistance in shields. Jewels function like magic items and roll random affixes, allowing multiple different stats on a single jewel.
No. Jewels are permanently attached once socketed. The only way to remove them is by using a Horadric Cube recipe that destroys all socketed items and returns the base item to an unsocketed state.
A 40% Enhanced Damage and 15% Increased Attack Speed jewel is considered best if affordable. A 40% Enhanced Damage with added maximum damage is a strong second option. Enhanced Damage is especially valuable for Windforce due to its high base damage.
Yes. Rare jewels can roll negative modifiers such as reduced attack rating, defense, or resistances alongside positive stats. Always review all affixes carefully before socketing.
A 40% Enhanced Damage and 15% Increased Attack Speed jewel typically trades for around 8–12 Ber runes on ladder. Non-ladder values are usually lower, around 5–8 Ber runes, due to higher overall supply.
It depends on the weapon and your build. Runewords like Grief outperform any jewel setup. For unique weapons such as Windforce, high-end jewels generally provide better results than single runes.
No. Enhanced Damage only affects physical damage. Elemental builds such as Sorceresses or elemental Druids gain no benefit and should use resistance-reducing jewels like fire, lightning, or cold facets instead.
You can check current jewel values on trading websites or community Discord servers. It’s important to verify value before socketing, as using a high-value jewel in a low-value item can result in a significant loss.
