Best Place For D2R High Rune Farming

We're going to keep things simple by making the guide as easy to understand and as direct to the point as possible. We'll be tackling all of the best rune farming areas instead of focusing on them per Act or per where you are in terms of progression.

Lower Kurast

One of the toughest parts about high rune farming is making a character that's already powerful enough to take on strong enemies that can drop great runes. But how do you make this possible if you need high runes in the first place? For low requirement farming, you're going to want to go to lower Kurast first.

This farming method will be accessible on Act 3 and it's best to do it while you're on Hell difficulty. While you can do it alone, it's best to do it in a full party. While you're in Lower Kurast, make sure to look for maps where you can find campfires near the Waypoint. This will make it easier for you to back out and recuperate.

Once you find your spot, you'll need to farm 6 super chests in 4 huts repeatedly. There's a good chance that you can get mid to high tier runes within this farming area. Other than that, you can also make this farming area a source of crafting materials and socketed items from the racks.

This is one of the best farming routes in the game because you don't need to be extra powerful to make the most out of it. Even with a non-optimized build, you're still able to clear mobs easily.

Tower/Countess Run

Doing a Forgotten Tower run in Act 1 is a good way to start getting good runes for your early game journey. Once you reach the top, a fight with The Countess can already give you some decent runes at that point in the game. While there's a very low chance for Lo from monster table, you're still getting good runes all in all.

Once you've defeated The Countess, continue farming on your way down. You can do so by farming Ghost packs and Devilkin packs, both of which are very easy to kill and have a higher rune drop rate as well.

As a bonus, you can also get valuable keys here which you can use for Uber runs or trading. Make sure to check out weapon racks while you're here. You can even get valuable Monarch shields if you're lucky.

The Pit

Also in Act 1, is another good rune farming spot in the Pit. This is a level 85 area so you're going to do this at around the endgame. While the area is high level, the monsters are very weak overall. The only real danger are the archers which can deal massive damage if you aren't careful.

Aside from farming runes, you can also get high-level uniques in the area which is going to be a good start if you're starting to optimize your build in the game. There are a lot of great runes to get here including the Zod Rune if you're very lucky.

Stony Tombs

In Act 2, you're going to want to start farming in Stony Tombs. Specifically, you want to go to the area near Rocky Waste. This is another high level area but you don't need that complex or powerful of a build to get by it. With the right strategy, you can easily move through Stony Tombs without worry.

This area is good if you're using cold and fire builds like Blizzard Sorcerer, Fireball Sorcerer, and Nova Sorcerer, because it's a tight space so you're making the most out of your skills.  The area is popular for getting certain uniques such as Death's Web, Griffon's Eye, and more. When it's  Terrorized, the palace becomes a very good spot for rune farming too.

Arcane Sanctuary

If you want a hassle-free way to farm runes properly, go to the Arcane Sanctuary. It's accessible because it has Direct Waypoint access. If you're able to beat the summoner at the end of the area, you can get a Hate Key as well. But that's only if you do the area in Hell difficulty of course.

Since this is a challenging battle, the strategy would be to clear full wings of the area before looking for the Summoner. Once you defeat it, head outside to reset the instance. Before going outside, make sure to check out the end platforms as they have super chests.

You can fight huge mobs of weak goatmen along the way for XP and loot. However, you're going to want to focus on ghost packs as these are the mobs that will give you the most chance at high tier runes.

Eldritch and Shenk Boss Fights

In Act 5, you can fight Eldritch and Shenk, two bosses that are easy access from Frigid Waypoint. These bosses come with a large minion pack. This means high density farming for better rune odds. Don't be intimidated by the amount of enemies though. As long as your build isn't cold-reliant, you can clear them out very quickly.

A good rotation would be to fight Eldritch, then Shenk, then head to the Pindle, and then the Pit. This will be a solid farming route that could result in a ton of high-tier runes.

Secret to High Rune Farming

Before you go, here are a few things you need to know about high rune farming so that your runes are as efficient as possible.

Don't farm only for high runes (except Lower Kurast)

High runes are good and all but if your farming journey is only about getting them, you're going to have a hard time. You can start building out a solid foundation for your character using low and mid-tier runes as long as you are choosing the right ones. Swap out for high runes ones you can get them.

Choose areas that also drop great uniques or progression items

If you're having a hard time farming for any of these areas, make sure to do farming spots that are also notorious for dropping great uniques and other items that help you progress through the power rankings even for a bit.

Run areas you enjoy and that fit your build's strengths

Yes, sometimes, it's more efficient to farm in areas where you're build is most suited for or even in areas where you're most used to fighting at. The more comfortable you are with the area, the higher your chances of succeeding.

Efficiency comes from killing large packs quickly while farming for other items

If you know of any areas that have higher mob density, farm those. Getting high-tier runes, or any runes for that matter is all about RNG. As such, efficient farming means farming areas that have more dense mobs.
