Diablo 4 developers continue to improve many things in the game. In the Lord of Hatred expansion, the devs have pretty much overhauled the skill tree of all classes in D4. This is with the intention to make the old classes, like the Barbarian, Druid, and Necromancer, compete with the new classes, such as the Paladin and Warlock.

So, how different is the skill tree in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred looking these days? Well, let’s just say that all of the builds that you’ve created prior to LoH have either improved immensely or are no longer possible. Although this might seem dire, the changes made were actually for the better.

In this article, I will go over what you need to know about the skill tree changes in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. I hope that after you’ve read this article, you’ll be able to navigate the newly improved skill tree for your particular build much better than before.

Before we begin, Sanctuary is in trouble once more. You need to have your character fully equipped before fighting the Lord of Hatred himself. That is why I invite you to go to our D4 Store, where you will find all of the new uniques, items, and runes introduced in the game’s latest expansion!

Overview of the Skill Tree Changes in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred

What is the main reason for changing the skill trees of all classes in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred? According to the development team, the rationale behind the changes is to give players more power when it comes to crafting their builds.

Gone are the days when you could find passive skills that require a few points to get their full value. Now, all nodes on the passive tree improve a certain aspect of a particular skill.

For example, Bone Spear, which is an underutilized skill in the previous expansions, now enjoys upgrades, such as reduced Essence cost, increased damage on the first hit, and increased critical strike, among others.

On top of that, all skills now have seven different upgrades, so it is up to you how you will spend your points. Three of those upgrades change the skill in a more profound way, while the other four are just nice additions.

Key System-Level Changes

One of the things that I really love about the new skill tree is that you are no longer forced to spend skill points in order to reach the lower portion of the tree. You simply attain the level required for that branch of the tree to be unlocked.

So, what does that mean for you in the late game? It means that you don’t have to spend points on basic skills, which is a good thing, especially because most of the endgame builds in Diablo 4 barely rely on basic skills anyway (thus saving you a skill point).

Another thing that you have to keep in mind is that you have a total of 83 skill points to allocate on the tree as you see fit. Take note, however, that some of those points will only be unlocked after you attain the higher season ranks. Hence, you should complete capstone dungeons and other seasonal objectives to obtain them.

With all of that power comes the challenge of dividing those skill points nicely. You see, you can now allocate 15 skill points to each active skill. When you factor in the seven possible upgrades for each skill mentioned earlier, it becomes a real endeavor to decide how you will spend your points on your chosen build.

Given the number of skill points you have, you can only realistically have five active skills, with two or three upgrades each. Despite the daunting task of divvying your skill points, that is the beauty of the new skill tree in D4, right? You have complete control over your character!

Class-by-Class Skill Tree Changes in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred

Barbarian

  • The Barbarian’s basic skills are pretty strong. Lunging Strike, for example, now grants Berserking on critical strike and has a longer range (assuming that you get its upgrades). Bash now “clobbers” enemies when using it four straight times. The said skill also has the “Atomic Blast” upgrade, which causes an explosion that deals fire damage when clobbering an enemy with Bash.
  • Hammer of the Ancients, which is the most popular core skill in the Barbarian’s kit, now has incredible upgrades that don’t require specific uniques anymore. For instance, the “Fissure” upgrade now makes HoTA form a seismic line, dealing damage and slowing enemies down (this effect used to require the Mantle of Mountain’s Fury).

Necromancer

  • Necromancer skills are a bit weaker compared to other classes early on, but they certainly ramp up the lower you go on the skill tree.
  • Minion skills are incredibly viable in the endgame now. The Golem, for example, can now be used to self-destruct, dealing huge damage to nearby enemies. Alternatively, you can summon three smaller golems that have slightly lower damage but more attack speed to compensate.

Druid

  • The Druid’s shapeshifting skills just got some useful upgrades. Shred, for example, was good but definitely needed some power-ups. Fortunately, all of the shortcomings of the skill have been addressed. There is one upgrade for Shred that heals the Druid for 3% of its maximum life (which increases to 6% when hitting a poisoned enemy). Because of this, the Shred Druid has become viable in the endgame.
  • All of the Druid’s companions can be made as killers or just bona fide supports, depending on the upgrades you take. For instance, the Poison Creeper can immediately deal direct damage to enemies it attacks, or it can create a poison aura around you that deals damage over time to nearby monsters instead.

Rogue

  • The Rogue’s imbuement skills just got some massive upgrades. For one, the “Crystal Distillation” upgrade for Cold Imbuement now creates a frigid emanation around you, chilling monsters that come close, and deals 75% cold damage. The Poison Imbuement’s “Toxic Touch” upgrade makes the said imbuement skill more potent, with each successive hit to a poisoned enemy granting an additional 5% increased potency (up to 50%).
  • It seems that the Rogue’s ultimate skills are now incredibly viable in the late game as well. The “Death Pit” upgrade for Death Trap, for example, now pulls nearby enemies toward it, applying Vulnerable and causing them to get knocked down in the process. Shadow Clone’s “Awakening” upgrade makes the Rogue’s next core skill a “Shade Skill.” As a result, it creates a Shade that deals 40% of the core skill’s damage.

Sorcerer

  • The Sorcerer’s cold and fire elemental spells got huge damage boosts in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. Gone are the days when you’d have to spec into lightning just to get to the higher Pit Levels.
  • Certain upgrades change the damage type of Sorcerer skills as well. For example, Meteor’s “Comet” upgrade now turns the said fire skill into a frost skill. This not only deals cold damage but also creates an icy mist that chills and inflicts Frostbite on enemies hit.

Spiritborn

Diablo 4 Spiritborn skill tree upgrades showing Spirit Hall and poison skill enhancements
  • Each Spiritborn active skill now has an upgrade that changes its primary Spirit Hall, granting new effects. The Seeker, for example, has the new “Tag Team” upgrade, which makes it a Jaguar Skill as well. When this upgrade is allocated, you gain 4 stacks of Ferocity, while allowing you to summon the Jaguar Spirit to slash nearby enemies, dealing fire damage.
  • All of the Spiritborn’s poison abilities seem to deal more damage than before. One of those skills is Touch of Death, an underutilized skill prior to the Lord of Hatred expansion. With the “Weakened Damage” and “Swarm of Swarms” allocated, the Touch of Death not only deals increased damage but also becomes a core skill without cooldown, enabling you to use it as often as you want.

Paladin

  • We already saw a glimpse of the revamped skill tree when the Paladin was released. More specifically, some of the Pally’s skills already come with three different nodes that change their functionality in a way. In the LoH expansion, some of the skills got a few notable adjustments. Brandish’s “Returning Light” upgrade now makes the projectiles return to you, dealing a portion of the original damage in the process. This effect is similar to the Supplication unique sword, albeit without the damage bonus.
  • Some ultimate skills just got better right off the bat. Arbiter of Justice now makes Wing Strikes deal more damage and apply Vulnerable to enemies that are hit (all without wearing specific uniques). Zenith has the “Sermon of Steel” upgrade, which enables you to use the skill before it goes on cooldown. You could reduce its cooldown by using the appropriate D4 Items.
