The current season for Diablo 4 has some pretty interesting changes. Mythic Unique Items like Ring of Starless Skies and Heir of Perdition now only have two guaranteed affixes, with the rest being random ones. This could potentially shift the meta that benefits certain classes more than others.

For the Necromancer, this minion commander, who also specializes in Blood and Bone skills, has gotten better with the recent item changes. So, that begs the question: what are the best Necromancer builds for leveling and endgame? That is what this Diablo 4 guide aims to provide!

Best D4 Necromancer Leveling Build

The Necromancer Class in Diablo 4 has two solid leveling builds for the current season. These are centered around minions and the Blood Surge skill.

Minion Necromancer

The Minion Necromancer is an S-tier leveling build in the current season, primarily because the minions are reliable enough to help you get from start to finish. The Necromancer’s “Book of the Dead” mechanic lets you influence certain aspects of the minions, namely the Skeletal Warriors, Skeletal Mages, and Golems.

Having said that, this D4 build has no problems dealing with bosses, even with budget gear. Besides that, if you don’t want to continue with the role of being a minion commander, you can easily transition to other D4 Necromancer Builds later down the line.

Here are the necessary skills for the Minion Necromancer leveling build:

  • Skeleton Mage: Coven
  • Skeleton Warrior: Master of Puppets
  • Golem: Gravebloom
  • Iron Maiden: Schadenfreude
  • Army of the Dead: Unyielding Commander
  • Corpse Tendrils

From the Book of the Dead, you will take the “Defenders” node for your Skeleton Warriors. This is because they only provide protection to you and your Skeleton Mages. The “Defenders” upgrade not only protects you from harm but also deals Thorns damage to nearby enemies.

The Skeleton Mages chill enemies thanks to the “Cold” upgrade from the Book of the Dead. These are your primary damage dealers, though the Golem does a good job of dealing with the enemy as well.

Speaking of which, the Golem gets the “Blood” node from the Book of the Dead. This upgrade makes the Blood Golem drain life from nearby allies, in exchange for more maximum life and damage when you use the “Command” skill.

The Minion Necromancer is an incredible leveling build, where your D4 items are mostly there to help you survive the enemy’s assault.

Gear Stat Priorities:

  • Weapon: Weapon Damage, Physical Damage, Maximum Life, Intelligence.
  • Helmet: Intelligence, Maximum Life, Armor, Thorns.
  • Chest Armor: Intelligence, Thorns, Maximum Life, Armor.
  • Gloves: Physical Damage Multiplier, Intelligence, Maximum Life, Armor
  • Pants: Intelligence, Thorns, Maximum Life, Armor
  • Boots: Movement Speed, Intelligence, Maximum Life, Armor
  • Amulet: + to All Skills, Ranks to Curse Skills, Physical Damage Multiplier, Intelligence.
  • Rings: Intelligence, Physical Damage Multiplier, Maximum Life, Armor.

Blood Surge Necromander

The Blood Surge Necromancer is the best leveling build for you if you want to be the one dispensing the pain. The build’s main skill, Blood Surge, lets you draw blood from your enemies to unleash a damaging blood nova.

Thanks to the recent changes made in Diablo 4, the Blood Surge Necromancer can now utilize Skeleton Minions to create blood novas from their bodies, essentially hitting most (if not all) monsters on the screen!

While Blood Surge is your main skill, you still need to use Hemorrhage to build stacks of Overpower and generate some much-needed essence for your more hard-hitting skills.

Having said that, here are the necessary skills that the Blood Surge Necromancer uses in Diablo 4:

  • Blood Surge: You and What Army?
  • Skeleton Mage: Gift of Death
  • Skeleton Warrior: Master of Puppets
  • Blood Mist: Blood Rush
  • Iron Maiden: Torture Artist
  • Hemorrhage: Blood Boil

Gear Stat Priorities:

  • Weapon: Weapon Damage, All Damage Multiplier, Intelligence, Maximum Life.
  • Helmet: Resource Generation, Maximum Life, Resistances, Armor.
  • Chest Armor: Intelligence, Maximum Life, Resistance to Elements, Armor
  • Gloves: Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Critical Strike Chance, Attack Speed, All Damage Multiplier.
  • Pants: Maximum Life, Armor, Resistance to Elements, Intelligence.
  • Boots: Movement Speed, Essence Regeneration, Maximum Life, Armor
  • Amulet: Vulnerable Damage Multiplier, All Damage Multiplier, Attack Speed, Movement Speed.
  • Rings: Vulnerable Damage Multiplier, All Damage Multiplier, Critical Strike Chance, Attack Speed.

Best D4 Necromancer Endgame Builds

The beauty of the endgame builds in Diablo 4 is that you can fit Mythic Uniques and complete set charms to gain more bonuses. In the current season, items associated with the Necromancer either got buffed or readjusted without any huge nerfs.

With that said, here are the best Diablo 4 Necromancer endgame builds:

Blood Wave Necromancer

The Blood Wave Necromancer is now faster than ever before! The changes made to the skill tree in the Lord of Hatred expansion have enabled this build to spam its primary skill, Blood Wave! Thanks to the “Hematolagnia” upgrade, Blood Wave no longer has a cooldown, so you can spam it as much as your essence permits!

Invest in Kessime’s Legacy so that you can pull enemies towards you, allowing you to hit them really well with Blood Wave. Furthermore, the Banished Lord Talisman is awesome here, especially if you’re able to get one that has “+3 to Blood Skills.”

It is important to note that the damage bonus per stack of Overpower granted by the Banished Lord Talisman has been reduced from 15-18% to 8-10%. Despite that, it is still a pretty good unique amulet to use for the Blood Wave Necromancer in the current season!

Don’t forget to get the Word of Blood Binder talisman set for this build. When you have the full set, Blood Wave is cast twice for every use and deals considerably more damage.

Here are the necessary skills for the Blood Wave Necromancer:

  • Blood Wave: Hematolagnia
  • Decrepify: Life Tap
  • Iron Maiden: Blood Maiden
  • Bone Prison: Life Imprisonment
  • Blood Mist: Blood Rush
  • Skeleton Warrior: Service and Sacrifice
  • Sever: Inexorable Reaper
  • Reap: Cull the Weak

Gear Stat Priorities:

  • Weapon (Tidal Aspect): Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Weapon Damage, Critical Strike Chance, Intelligence.
  • Shield (Aspect of Thickened Blood): Critical Strike Chance, Damage Reduction, Intelligence, Armor.
  • Helmet: Intelligence, Movement Speed, Critical Strike Chance, Maximum Life.
  • Chest Armor (Aspect of Glynn’s Anvil): Intelligence, Essence Regeneration, Resource Cost Reduction, Maximum Life.
  • Gloves (Crushing Aspect): Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Vulnerable Damage Multiplier, Physical Damage Multiplier, Intelligence.
  • Pants: Intelligence, Essence Regeneration, Maximum Life, Armor.
  • Boots: Movement Speed, Essence Regeneration, Maximum Life, Armor.
  • Amulet: Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Vulnerable Damage Multiplier, Ranks to Blood Skills.
  • Ring 1 (Tides of Blood Aspect): Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Vulnerable Damage Multiplier, Physical Damage Multiplier, Intelligence.
  • Ring 2: Intelligence, Attack Speed, Maximum Life, Critical Strike Damage Multiplier.
  • Talismans: Ranks to Blood Skills, Resistances.

Skeleton Mages Necromancer

There are many variations of the Minion Necromancer in the endgame of Diablo 4. However, this particular variant focuses on the Skeleton Mages (Shadow), which is why The Hand of Naz is a great upgrade here.

The Hand of Naz turns the lowly Skeletal Mage into an awesome Arch-Mage, which is a minion that teleports away when attacked, and occasionally has its attacks shatter on impact, dealing increased damage.

Combine this with the Pact of Bone—a unique ring that increases the Skeleton Arch-Mage’s attack speed and critical strike by up to 35%—and this build handles Pit 100+ with relative ease!

Here are the necessary skills for the Skeleton Mages Necromancer:

  • Skeleton Mage: Coven
  • Skeleton Warrior: Litany of Death
  • Golem: Gargantua
  • Blood Mist: Blood Transfusion
  • Blood Wave: Hematolagnia
  • Decrepify: Life Tap
  • Iron Maiden: Blood Maiden
  • Sever: Inexorable Reaper

Gear Stat Priorities:

  • Weapon (Tidal Aspect): Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, All Damage Multiplier, Weapon Damage, Maximum Life.
  • Helmet: Intelligence, Movement Speed, Maximum Life.
  • Chest Armor (Aspect of Glynn’s Anvil): Essence Regeneration, Maximum Life, Intelligence, Armor.
  • Gloves: Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Vulnerable Damage Multiplier, Attack Speed, Intelligence.
  • Pants: Ranks to Skeleton Mage, Intelligence, Maximum Life, Arnor.
  • Boots (Exploiter’s Aspect): Movement Speed, Intelligence, Essence Regeneration, Maximum Life.
  • Amulet: Critical Strike Chance, Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Intelligence, Vulnerable Damage Multiplier.
  • Ring 1: Critical Strike Chance, Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Shadow Damage Multiplier, Vulnerable Damage Multiplier.
  • Ring 2: Critical Strike Chance, Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, All Damage Multiplier.
  • Talismans: Ranks to Darkness Skills, Resistances.

Bone Spirit Necromancer

The Bone Spirit Necromancer is quite strong in the current season, especially considering the skill tree changes and the addition of the Talisman Set. Bone Spirit can now be turned into a core skill just by spending a single skill point. Besides that, the “Astral Projection” upgrade changes Bone Spirit at a fundamental level, where it no longer seeks enemies on the field. Instead, it spirals around you, hitting and exploding on enemies that it touches.

The Vengeful Sinew chest armor, combined with the Radament’s Desecration Talisman Set, significantly increases the damage output of Bone Spirit (and also Bone Storm).

If you are interested in playing this build, here are the necessary skills for the Bone Spirit Necromancer:

  • Bone Spirit: Astral Projection
  • Bone Storm: Roll the Bones
  • Blood Mist: Blood Rush
  • Iron Maiden: Blood Maiden
  • Decrepify: Life Tap
  • Skeleton Mage: Gift of Death
  • Corpse Tendrils: Get Over Here
  • Sever: Inexorable Reaper

Gear Stat Priorities:

  • Weapon (Tidal Aspect): Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Weapon Damage, Intelligence, Maximum Life.
  • Helmet: Movement Speed, Intelligence, Maximum Life.
  • Chest Armor: Maximum Resource, Essence Regeneration, Intelligence, Maximum Life.
  • Gloves (Aspect of Bursting Bones): Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Vulnerable Damage Multiplier, Intelligence, Maximum Life.
  • Pants (Aspect of Glynn’s Anvil): Ranks to Skeleton Mage, Essence Regeneration, Intelligence, Maximum Life.
  • Boots: Ranks to Bone Spirit, Essence Regeneration, Intelligence, Maximum Life.
  • Amulet: Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Vulnerable Damage Multiplier, All Damage Multiplier, Intelligence.
  • Ring 1 (Aspect of Rapid Ossification): Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Vulnerable Damage Multiplier, Resource Generation, Maximum Life.
  • Ring 2 (Aspect of Deluge): Critical Strike Damage Multiplier, Vulnerable Damage Multiplier, Resource Generation, Maximum Life.
  • Talismans: Ranks to Macabre Skills, Resistances.

Paragon and Endgame Progression

Once you achieve the max level of 70, you will start to gain Paragon Points every time you level up your character in Diablo 4. These points are necessary to navigate your way through the different Paragon Boards.
