Tormented Demons are one of Old School RuneScape's most rewarding mid-to-high level monsters to farm, sitting deep inside the Ancient Guthix Temple and gated behind the grandmaster quest, While Guthix Sleeps. The grind is well worth it; their two unique drops include the Tormented Synapse at 1/500 for around 40M, used to craft the powerful new demonbane weapons, and the Burning Claw at 1/501 for around 4M, a cheaper but demon-shredding alternative to Dragon Claws. On top of that, the average kill is worth around 105K gold, making them a genuinely profitable monster to farm at scale.
That said, Tormented Demons aren't a brainless grind. At level 450 with 600 hitpoints, they can use all three attack styles and swap overhead prayers mid-fight, meaning you'll need to bring two combat styles, manage prayer switches, and dodge fire bomb attacks that can chunk over 40 damage if tanked. Once you get the mechanics down, though, they become very manageable.
In this guide, we cover everything you need: how to get to the Ancient Guthix Temple, recommended stats, gear setups from budget to best-in-slot across melee, magic, and ranged, a full breakdown of every mechanic, and the complete drop table.
Tormented Demons

To be able to slay these fabled demons, you will first need to complete a quest called “While Guthix Sleeps”. This quest is a long, grandmaster quest, but the ability to fight tormented demons is well worth doing. They have two unique drops:
- Tormented synapse - 1/500 - 36M
- Burning claw - 1/501 - 3M
Tormented synapse is a new ingredient that you can use to craft the brand new demonbane weapons, which are extremely powerful against demons. Two burning claws can be combined to make a burning claw. This item is a lesser and cheaper version of dragon claws, but is actually stronger against demons.
Location & How to Get There

These demons reside in the Ancient Guthix Temple. There are two ways to get to them:
Just like you did in the quest, teleport to “Tears of Guthix” via a games necklace and run north. Climb the rocks and use your sapphire lantern on a light creature to descend into the abyss. Once there, follow the path, climb some rocks and enter the temple just like you did during the quest.
Second, and the easiest way is to use Guthixian Temple Teleports, which teleports you directly to the entrance of the temple and will allow you to have an additional free inventory spot.
Inside the ancient temple, there are many locations to kill these demons. You will notice a demon icon and a number at the bottom right side of your screen. The number indicates how many tormented demons you can attack at the same time. If you are just starting, pick a location with the number 1 or 2.
Skill Requirements

These tormented demons are level 450, have 600 hitpoints and can use all attack styles and prayers. To have an efficient and easy time during your trips, we recommend the following stats:
Skills | Minimum | Recommended |
Attack | 80 | 90+ |
Strength | 80 | 90+ |
Defence | 75 | 90+ |
Hitpoints | 80 | 90+ |
Prayer | 43 | 77 |
Magic | 82 | 99 |
Gear Guide
We strongly recommend that you have completed the quest “A Kingdom Divided” for Arceuus spells and Shadow of the Storm for “Arclight”.
That being said, you will need to bring different styles of combat to this fight to get past the demon's protection prayers. If you are not good at switching gears, prioritise bringing hybrid items like barrows gloves, or full void. You will need to bring along two different combat styles. We have some example inventory setups for both magic melee and ranged melee setups in the inventory section of the guide.
Depending on your budget, your gear can vary greatly. Here are some optimal setups for all players.

Inventory
Depending on what you choose to bring, your inventory setup will change a lot. When you are starting, prioritise bringing more food, but once you learn the mechanics of this mob, you can start bringing more prayer potions and only 3-4 pieces of food.
Melee & Mage Setup
Bring fire, blood, cosmic and soul runes in your rune pouch. If you want, you can bring wrath runes in your inventory as well, to get prayer points from the ashes. You can also bring a herb sack instead of one of these items.

Melee & Range Setup

How to Kill Tormented Demons

Tormented demons have a few unique mechanics that the player has to know of, to kill them. These mechanics are extremely simple once learned.
Accuracy Buff
After roughly 15 seconds of engaging in combat with the demon, your accuracy will increase to 100%. This timer and buff reset after each fire bomb attack.
Overhead Prayers
Each tormented demon will spawn with an overhead prayer. This prayer will change after the demon receives 150 points of damage, and it will change into the damage type that it was last damaged with. Using a thrall of a third attack style might end up as the last damage, and you will get a free pass without the need to switch your gear and attack style. Also, during this timeframe, the demon will stop attacking for 3.6 seconds, for the player to switch styles.
Fire Bomb & Attack Style
Roughly every 36 seconds, the tormented demon will bind you to your place, turn off your run and fire two fire bombs at your location. One of them is going to land right on you, and the second one will land a tile near you. Tanking these bombs will easily deal over 40 damage to the player, so it is best to avoid them.
To avoid these bombs, simply hold down CTRL and spam-click away from the bombs. We are holding down CTRL to force our character to run instead of walking.
After dodging the bombs, get ready to switch your prayers because, after the bombs, the demon is going to change its attack style. To predict the style, you can look for the following:
- If the demon walks towards you, it will use melee. If you are near the demon, simply walk away to check this.
- If it doesn’t walk toward the player, it will use either ranged or magic. If the demon's previous attack was magic, it will use ranged; if it was ranged, it will use magic. If the previous attack was melee, you will have to guess.
- Alternatively, you can force the demon to change styles. If you try safe spotting the demon, it will switch to either range or magic. If you try to stand underneath the demon, it will switch to melee.
Shield & Heavy Weapons
Tormented demons have a passive shield. This shield reduces damage taken from any weapon by 20% except abyssal and demonbane weapons. During the fight, there will be times when this shield is turned off. During those time frames, you can hit these demons for massive amounts of damage with heavy-hitting weapons. This has a weird mechanic where your damage will scale with how slow your weapons' attack cycle is. So the best weapons to use for this are: heavy ballista(on accurate) and Dharok’s greataxe. If you land a hit with these weapons while the shields are down, not only do you get a chance to hit a massive number, but it also resets your attack timer to 4 ticks, so you can attack again really quickly. You can take advantage of this mechanic in the following scenarios:
- After hitting the demon once at the start, you can use a heavy-hitting weapon on your next hit since the shield will be down for a hit.
- After the demon uses his fireball attack, its shield will be down for a singular hit, so you can use a heavy-hitting weapon then as well.
Tormented Demons Slayer Task

Tormented demons are counted as greater demons, and it is highly recommended that you first get a greater demon slayer task before starting to farm these demons, to get that juicy 15% damage and accuracy boost. A greater demon task can be assigned by the following Slayer masters:
- Chaeldar
- Konar quo Maten
- Nieve/Steve
- Duradel
To increase your likelihood of getting assigned this monster, make sure to take tasks from either Chaeldar or Duradel, as they have the highest chance of assigning you this task.
Full Kill
- Teleport to the caverns and make your way to one of the locations.
- Attack the demon using one of the styles that you’ve brought. After your first hit, switch to your heavy-hitting weapon to deal massive damage, then switch back to your main weapon.
- Summon your thrall and switch your combat style after every 150 damage.
- Dodge the fireballs using CTRL click and hit the demon with your heavy-hitting weapon right after dodging.
- Be mindful of the demon's attack style and pray against it accordingly.
- Use the methods above to correctly pray against the initial hit to minimise damage taken.
- Repeat this process until you get the kill.
Killing Three At The Same Time

This is difficult to do; to kill three demons at the same time, you must constantly switch your protection prayers to the right style, and it can get confusing, but if you are fighting multiple demons at the same time, all of them will use their fireball attack at the same time, so you can use your heavy weapon against all of them in that time frame.
Congratulations, you have just slayed your first tormented demon and good luck on your grind!
Drop Table
The average value of a tormented demon kill is around 105K gold, but if we exclude the uniques from this monster, it drops down to 17K gold per kill.
