Diablo 2: Resurrected , Game Guides

If you are planning to create a melee build in Diablo II: Resurrected anytime soon, you may have seen some people recommending a particular runeword a lot during your research. That runeword is none other than Grief.
Why is the Grief Runeword a popular choice among melee builds in D2R Season 13? Well, I am going to answer that and more in this article. Come and join me as I unravel everything you need to know about it!
What is Grief in Diablo II: Resurrected?
Grief is a runeword in Diablo II: Resurrected that requires a melee weapon that contains five open sockets. This is to accommodate the following runes: Eth, Tir, Lo, Mal, and Ral.
When you ask any veteran player in Diablo II: Resurrected about what weapon runeword you should use on your next melee build, they will almost always recommend Grief because of the power it brings. You could say that a weapon that is socketed with this special combination of runes will result in one of the best items in the game.

Why is Grief Popular in D2R Season 13?
Grief is famous for melee builds in Diablo II: Resurrected due to a bunch of reasons. First and foremost, Grief grants a very high flat damage of up to 400. Although it does not give “% Enhanced Damage,” the damage you deal with Grief equipped can actually be amplified with complementary D2R items, such as the Steelrend or Laying of Hands.
On top of that, Grief ignores the enemy’s defense against physical damage. This gives you an easier time destroying the new Heralds of Terror that are introduced as part of the Reign of the Warlock DLC.
If you ever fight any of the Act Bosses in the game, the “Ignore Target’s Defense” affix does not work on them. Fortunately, Grief has another way to address that: its “-25% Target Defense.” As a result, you will always have a higher damage output against them, regardless of any form of damage reduction they may have.
In addition, when you get a good roll, Grief can actually provide you with a 40% increased attack speed. The said bonus is crucial, especially if you are trying to aim for the higher IAS breakpoints.
Now, you might think that all of this power is locked behind expensive runes like Ber and Jah, but that is not the case at all! The D2R Grief Runeword is quite accessible to most players, particularly because the only high rune of the bunch is the Lo Rune. The rest are easily obtainable by farming The Countess in Act 1.
Best Weapon Bases for Grief
There are really only two good weapon bases that people use in Diablo II: Resurrected when creating the Grief Runeword. The weapons in question are the Phase Blade and the Berserker Axe.
The Phase Blade (PB) is the most popular choice because it is indestructible, so no matter how quickly you attack enemies using the said weapon, you don’t have to worry about repairing it afterward.
Aside from that, the Phase Blade has a -30 base attack speed, which is the fastest among melee weapons in D2R Season 13. The Phase Blade’s sheer speed is only rivaled by two other weapons meant for Assassins, namely the Runic Talons and Greater Talons.
Another popular weapon base that people insert the runes for Grief into is the Berserker Axe. When compared to the Phase Blade, the Berserker Axe is noticeably slower than the Phase Blade (at 0 base weapon speed as opposed to -30). However, it makes up for it by effectively having double the base damage of PB, allowing it to output some of the highest DPS numbers in the game.
Given that information, which base weapon should you choose for your next melee build in Diablo II: Resurrected? Well, pick the Phase Blade if you:
- Want a weapon that is virtually indestructible.
- Want to have a weapon that allows you to attack enemies rapidly.
- Want to achieve the highest IAS breakpoints with Grief.
Alternatively, choose the Berserker Axe if you:
- Want a one-handed weapon that has some of the highest DPS in the game.
- Want a weapon that does not require you to invest triple-digit DEX to wield.
- Want a reliable weapon in PvP due to that increased range.
If you are wondering why I did not put any two-handed weapon bases on here, it is because they are highly inefficient for Grief. You see, the D2R Grief Runeword is all about maximizing your hits per second.
IAS Breakpoints for Weapons with Grief in D2R
Diablo II: Resurrected operates on 25 FPS by default. This encompasses basic attack animations, skill animations, movement, etc.
In the case of increased attack speed (or IAS), things are a bit different. This is because to calculate the ideal IAS breakpoint, you’d have to consider a number of factors.
For the purposes of this D2R guide, I will only put IAS breakpoints for the Phase Blade and Berserker Axe.
Here are the IAS breakpoints:
Paladin (Phase Blade)
| IAS (%) | Frames | Attacks per Second |
| 0 | 11 | 2.27 |
| 8 | 10 | 2.50 |
| 24 | 9 | 2.77 |
| 54 | 8 | 3.12 |
Paladin (Berserker Axe)
| IAS (%) | Frames | Attacks per Second |
| 0 | 14 | 1.78 |
| 9 | 13 | 1.92 |
| 19 | 12 | 2.08 |
| 32 | 11 | 2.27 |
| 54 | 10 | 2.50 |
| 86 | 9 | 2.77 |
| 152 | 8 | 3.12 |
Barbarian (Phase Blade)
| IAS (%) | Frames | Attacks per Second |
| 0 | 12 | 2.08 |
| 5 | 11 | 2.27 |
| 19 | 10 | 2.50 |
| 42 | 9 | 2.78 |
Barbarian (Berserker Axe)
| IAS (%) | Frames | Attacks per Second |
| 0 | 15 | 1.67 |
| 9 | 14 | 1.79 |
| 18 | 13 | 1.92 |
| 30 | 12 | 2.08 |
| 48 | 11 | 2.27 |
| 75 | 10 | 2.50 |
| 125 | 9 | 2.78 |
Take note that the IAS (%) refers to the total “increased attack speed” bonuses from your equipped gear. This includes the inherent attack speed bonus from Grief [30-40%], as well as your armor, charms, and socketable items.
D2R Builds That Use Grief
If you are wondering what builds in Diablo II: Resurrected use Grief to the fullest extent, here is a brief rundown:
- Frenzy Barbarian: This build dual-wields a couple of Grief Phase Blades to quickly decimate any monster it comes across. Each swing of the Frenzy Barb’s weapons increases his overall speed, thus extracting the most out of the Grief PBs.
- Zeal Paladin: Also known as the Zealot, the Zeal Paladin often comes equipped with Guillaume’s Face, Laying of Hands, and Highlord’s Wrath to deal heavy physical damage against the forces of evil. His quick attacks perfectly encapsulate what the Grief Runeword is trying to achieve.
- Whirlwind Barbarian: The Whirlwind Barb takes full advantage of the flat damage increase provided by the Grief Runeword. Combine that with Gore Rider to give you a chance to land a Crushing Blow, and you have a build that can easily tear through the Heralds of Terror in D2R Season 13.
- Smite Paladin: Known for being a god against Uber Bosses, the Smite Paladin excels when he is wielding a Grief Phase Blade in the main hand. As mentioned earlier, Grief reduces the target’s defense by 25% (if the “ignore defense” affix doesn’t work, like in Act Bosses). Smite’s insane damage, coupled with Grief’s flat damage and defense reduction affixes, turns this build from good to great without question!
- Berserk Barbarian: An elite-hunting powerhouse, the Berserk Barbarian’s true potential is unlocked when wielding two Grief Phase Blades at the same time. Berserk fully converts your physical damage to magic damage, so you can imagine what Grief’s flat damage numbers can do for this build.
Tips for Maximizing the Grief Runeword in D2R
- Insert a Jewel of Fervor into the helmet to increase your attack speed by 15%. This helps you achieve the higher IAS breakpoints, especially if you don’t have any attack speed modifiers on your other pieces of gear.
- Only choose the Phase Blade or Berserker Axe for Grief. Any other weapon bases are sub-optimal for damage output.
- Because Grief does not have any “% Enhanced Damage,” you can address that by equipping any of the following:
- Gore Rider (Boots)
- Fortitude (Body Armor)
- Steelrend (Gloves)
- Phoenix (Shield)
