D2R Season 12 Release Date

Ladder Season 12 for Diablo II: Resurrected will launch on Friday, October 3, at 5 PM PDT for players in North America. For those in Europe and Asia, you can expect to play this incredible ARPG the following day at 2 AM CEST and 9 AM CST, respectively.
That said, are there any changes now that the game hasn’t had any meaningful ones in the past few seasons? Sadly, there is no new content for D2R Ladder Season 12. It is basically just a full reset that is aimed at players who want to compete with others in a race to level 99.
If this is your first time playing Diablo II: Resurrected and you’re planning to join in on the fun, there are several different modes to choose from:
- Pre-Expansion Ladder: This mode only lets you play the original four acts of Diablo II, which means that your expedition stops at killing the Lord of Terror.
- Pre-Expansion Hardcore Ladder: This mode is the same as the first one, albeit death is permanent. If you die for some reason, you’ll have to create an entirely new character if you wish to participate again.
- Ladder: The standard “Ladder” mode allows you to enjoy all five acts in the game, including the content available in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.
- Hardcore Ladder: If you have what it takes to survive, then the Hardcore Ladder provides you with an even greater challenge. Only choose this mode if you have played the game before and are already familiar with the mechanics.
As is tradition with every new Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season, any characters you have in Season 11 will be transferred to a Non-Ladder Server, with all of their items intact.
Changes That Players Want to See in Season 12
Although there are no patch notes for Season 12, indicating that there is no new content that will be added in the upcoming season, many players still clamor for something fresh—whether that be some much-needed QoL changes or entirely new features.
While it is unlikely that Blizzard is going to implement anything in Season 12, here is a compilation of the things that people would like to see in the new Ladder Season for Diablo II: Resurrected:
Rebalanced Mosaic
Mosaic is a D2R Runeword that is a bit polarizing, to say the least. For those who do not know, the Mosaic Runeword allows the underwhelming Martial Arts Assassin to transform into a powerhouse that can obliterate Diablo and his minions with ease!
What it does is enable you to accrue various charges from your “Charge-Up Skills,” including Tiger Strike, Fists of Fire, and Phoenix Strike, among others. These charges will have their duration refreshed when you use a finisher skill, such as Dragon Talon or Dragon Flight.
Because you can basically have these charges up as long as you’re attacking once every 15 seconds, you can offload them all onto a boss and deal massive amounts of damage!
Each Mosaic Claw has a 50% chance to not consume charges when executing finishers, and this effect is cumulative. In other words, you can achieve the full 100% simply by equipping two Mosaic Claws!
With its insane potential, it is no wonder that the first few pages of the previous ladder are filled with people who played the Mosaic Assassin build. That is why, to preserve the integrity of the game, Blizzard has to do something about it.
In an interview prior to the launch of D2R in China, Matthew Cederquest, the game’s lead producer, said that the Mosaic Runeword may be rebalanced in a future update. Since no patch notes have been revealed for Season 12 at the time of writing, it is safe to assume that Mosaic will be dealt with in the next season instead.
In-Game Trade Chat
Trading in Diablo II: Resurrected requires you to use third-party platforms because there is no official way of conversing with real people in the game. Sure, you can talk to your party members if you are in a group, but what if you don’t have others to play with?
That is why players flock to D2R subreddits, forums, and Discord servers just to barter their precious items with other people. Alternatively, you can take advantage of Diablo II: Resurrected services, such as what we are offering here at RPGStash.
To streamline the trading process and avoid scams, the community asks Blizzard to add an in-game trade chat. Although it is unlikely to be added as part of Season 12, players are hoping that this feature is something that the company is seriously going to add in future seasons.
Better Terror Zones
Terror Zones in Diablo II: Resurrected are just beefed-up versions of various areas in the game that rotate on an hourly basis. Monsters in these areas are often within a few levels of your character, which means that you get a ton of EXP when slaying them.
Having said that, you have no control over which area in the game will be designated as a Terror Zone. Even though certain websites tell you exactly which Terror Zone is going to arrive in Diablo II: Resurrected at a specific time, it would still be nice to have a feature that allows you to force Terror Zones in your favorite places somehow.
For example, if you do not like Terror Zones in Act 3 Areas like the Spider Forest or Great Marsh, maybe you can type a command or something so that each TZ will be in Chaos Sanctuary or The Pit instead.
More Shared Stash

One of the biggest changes in Diablo II: Resurrected compared to the vanilla version is the addition of Shared Stash Tabs. These are special storage spaces that allow you to store items for use on your other characters, so long as they are on the same account.
Despite the fact that you now have more storage to work with, that is still not enough due to the wealth of D2R Runes and gear that you can get. However, that might finally become a reality after a screenshot of the Chinese version of the game surfaced online.
In the image you can see above, it shows a Shared Storage Space, along with the “1/7” number at the bottom. This likely indicates that the player who owns that stash has a total of seven stash tabs available.
Now, the reason why that is a big deal is that you only have a maximum of three shared stash tabs in Diablo II: Resurrected (at least, in the global version). If that screenshot is true, and the Chinese version of the game can actually have more than a few shared stash tabs, then implementing it for all D2R players should be a cinch!
If there is a way to add more shared stash tabs in the future, be prepared to spend some money. A feature as useful as this could be exploited by Blizzard. The company will likely sell extra stash tabs for $5 a piece, though I think that’s a fair price, especially considering that this has been asked for by the community for quite some time now.
It is also worth noting that shared stash tabs right now only work for ladder-only and non-ladder characters. This means that if you have a character in the latest Ladder Season, you cannot put items in your shared stash tabs and have them shared with your non-ladder characters.
If the extra stash tabs are only for the Chinese version of D2R, then Blizzard should entertain the idea of adding a dedicated currency stash tab instead. This particular space is only for various jewels and runes, which you can find abundantly just by playing the game.
Stackable Currency
Technically, adding more stash tabs in Diablo II: Resurrected should be doable. After all, the Chinese version of the game already has seven (or possibly even more). However, if Blizzard does not want to do that for the global audience, the company should at least implement stackable currencies in the game.
As it stands, you cannot stack identical runes or jewels in your stash or inventory. Just imagine the huge quality of life if you’re able to put Jah Runes on top of each other; it could really help you save a ton of space!
TCP/IP
Aside from stackable currencies, there is another feature that the D2R community has been hounding Blizzard to implement. That is, of course, the ability for the game to use TCP/IP to play locally.
For those who don’t know, TCP/IP, as it relates to Diablo II: Resurrected, should enable players to connect with one another in a local area network (or LAN). Theoretically, this should give people a seamless multiplayer experience since they are connected on the same network.
Unfortunately, you are at the mercy of Blizzard’s servers with D2R, and there is no indication that the company will be adding TCP/IP to the game sometime in the near future.
If the community becomes more vocal about the addition of this feature, then perhaps Blizzard will have no choice but to stay awhile and listen.
Crossplay
Diablo II: Resurrected is available on several platforms, including PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Xbox SeriesX|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. You would think that being able to play D2R on these platforms means that the game has crossplay now. However, that is just not the case.
While most people prefer playing Diablo II: Resurrected on the PC, some do enjoy the game through couch co-op on consoles. That is why some players are asking Blizzard to include crossplay as a bona fide feature, where you can play with others regardless of what platform they are on.
With the release of the Chinese D2R back in late August, it is not an outlandish idea to think that crossplay is within reach! Who knows, it might arrive before the end of the year!
Best Builds in D2R Season 12
A new Ladder Season for Diablo II: Resurrected is upon us! If you do not know which build to run in Season 12, then read further! Here are our recommendations:
Mosaic Assassin
It should come as no surprise that the Mosaic Assassin is still one of the best builds in Diablo II: Resurrected Season 12. This is because no balancing changes have been implemented for the current patch, which means that the Mosaic Runeword is still quite powerful now, as it was in Season 11.
That said, this build does require you to have a couple of Mosaic Claws to fully take advantage of that 100% chance to not consume charges when using a finisher skill. If you like to deck out your character with the right pieces of gear to make this build work, you can buy the Mosaic Assassin gear pack in our RPGStash Store!
Hammerdin
The classic “Hammerdin” or the Blessed Hammer Paladin remains a strong choice for Ladder Season 12. This build utilizes magical hammers that spin around your character for several seconds. These hammers will decimate anyone or anything that comes in your way!
If you want a reliable character that is tanky enough to take a beating, but also has the power to destroy the forces of evil, then the Hammerdin is definitely one that you should consider.
Nova Sorceress
A typical Sorceress Build in Diablo II: Resurrected often has that distinction of being too squishy. Despite all the potential power she can gain, the Sorceress can get one-tapped by enemies in Hell Difficulty if she is undergeared. Fortunately, there is one build that challenges this notion, and that is none other than the Nova Sorceress.
The Nova Sorceress utilizes two powerful lightning spells, namely Static Field to whittle down the enemy’s HP, and Nova to delete them from existence. For defense, this build uses the combination of Energy Shield and Telekinesis. This ensures that you won’t go down without a fight!
If you are interested in this build, you can check out our D2R Nova Sorceress guide for more details.
Lightning Trapsin
Although the Mosaic Assassin build mentioned earlier is still more powerful, the Lightning Trapsin is more suited to you if you don’t want to play the game in easy mode. This build is about setting up a couple of traps, such as the Lightning Sentry and Death Sentry, to electrocute enemies and make the corpses of fallen ones explode, respectively.
The Lightning Trapsin is best played using a more methodical approach, where you place your traps in strategic locations for the maximum benefit. Despite lacking in defensive capabilities, this build should help you reach level 99 within a couple of weeks.
Summoner Necro
Diablo II: Resurrected’s resident undead commander is back! As you can tell by its name, the Summoner Necro is a D2R build that can call forth a bunch of skeleton warriors to fight for him. Additionally, this build utilizes the Iron Golem, which is best summoned from the Insight Thresher for that Meditation Aura.
The Summoner Necro is a great starter build because it can perform really well even with just self-found gear. However, if you feel that your power is lacking, you can pivot to other Necromancer builds, such as the Bonemancer or the Corpse Explosion Necromancer, for more oomph.
D2R Season 12—Final Thoughts
Ladder Season 12 is just another simple reset where you start a new season from scratch. While the game is devoid of any new features, it is still a great idea to participate in the race, especially if you’re a competitive person.
The Mosaic Assassin is still supreme when talking about the best D2R builds for Season 12. There are no changes to the Mosaic Runeword, despite many player speculations. The Hammerdin and Nova Sorceress are viable alternatives, followed by the Lightning Trapsin and Summoner Necromancer for more niche builds.
