Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred—Expansion Overview
Every new expansion of Diablo 4 continues the story of the previous one. If you haven’t played the Vessel of Hatred, let me fill you in on the details that you need to know.
The Lord of Hatred expansion kicks off shortly after the betrayal of Eru. With Mephisto on the verge of returning to Sanctuary, it is up to the heroes to gather up forces to fight one of the most vicious Prime Evils in the franchise!
This expansion matters a lot because it is likely going to bring the story one step closer to the real villain: The Lord of Terror himself and the game’s namesake, Diablo.
Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred is expected to launch on April 28, 2026, though you can now pre-order the Standard, Deluxe, and Ultimate Editions right now if you want to.

New Content and Features
Being a major expansion, Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred has a ton of new content for you to explore. In fact, you can already enjoy one of the two playable classes today! Of course, I am talking about the beloved warrior of Zakarum, the Holy Paladin!
New Class: Paladin

When Blizzard dropped the official reveal trailer for the Lord of Hatred expansion at The Game Awards 2025, it was met with thunderous applause simply because of one crucial detail: the coming of the Paladin.
The Paladin was last playable in Diablo II: Resurrected, so fans of the said class were a bit saddened by its absence in Diablo III. Fortunately, the Paladin has returned in Diablo 4 as an official member of the game’s roster of heroes!
Unlike in D2R, the Paladin has some new tricks up its sleeves in D4. Besides the iconic Blessed Hammer, the Paladin can now use the Arbiter of Justice, which is an ultimate skill that deals a ton of damage. This is best utilized against the Lesser Evils that have invaded various activities in Sanctuary, such as Andariel, Duriel, and Belial.
On top of that, you can select several different “Oaths” depending on your build’s needs. Here is a brief rundown:
- Zealot: Allows Zealot Skills like Zeal to repeat multiple times based on the number of Fervor stacks. Also grants Fortify for 1% of your maximum life.
- Juggernaut: Gives Juggernaut Skills like Shield Bash a damage boost and increased AoE by consuming all of your "Resolve" stacks.
- Judicator: Empowers basic skills like Holy Bolt and Brandish to apply stacks of Judgement, which marks enemies and detonates after a few seconds, dealing 80% damage. Judgement inflicted upon the enemy can be manually detonated by using core "Judicator" skills, such as Blessed Shield.
- Disciple: Grants the "Arbiter" buff, giving you a boost in damage and movement speed for 4.5 seconds. Your standard Evade is also replaced with the Angelic Leap, which propels you a bit forward, allowing you to close the gap.
The Paladin wields its iconic sword and shield in battle. However, the said class can also utilize a two-handed weapon when needed. Be sure to get Diablo 4 items, particularly the new ones, from our D4 Store if you want to make the Paladin as strong as it can be.
If you are itching to try the Paladin out, you can actually play the new class right now! Just pre-order any of the game editions, and you can instantly create a Paladin character in Diablo 4!

Blizzard gives you the option to upgrade to a higher game edition later down the line, so you can still get the mount bundles and additional cosmetics without any issues.
Another Mystery Playable Class
Aside from the Paladin, there is another playable class that will be available once Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred launches in April next year. However, Blizzard has not revealed the identity of this new class yet, though the community has some speculations about what it could be.

Judging by the silhouette, it is very unlikely that the new class will be the Witch Doctor. For those who don’t know, the Witch Doctor was a playable class in Diablo III that specialized in firing poison darts to the enemy, while summoning various minions to do his bidding.
If it is not the Witch Doctor, then who could it be? Well, many fans have speculated that the upcoming class is the Amazon, especially since the new region, Skovos, is the mainland of the Amazons in the Diablo lore.
While it is easy to think that, there is also a part of the community that does not believe that it is the Amazon. This is primarily because the silhouette has some “extra” details that would make that assumption highly implausible (like the “horns” that stick out from the shoulders).
If I were to guess what the next playable class in D4 is going to be, I would say the Blood Knight. The Blood Knight, which is a hybrid class that specializes in polearms and vampiric powers to overwhelm the minions of Hell, would be a great addition to the game. The hybrid style of play of the Blood Knight complements the faster-paced battles in Diablo 4.
Again, these are all speculations at this point. Can you guess what the next playable class in Diablo 4 is? Let us know in the comments!
New Region: Skovos

A place teeming with rainforests and towering structures, the Skovos Isles is the newest playable region in Diablo 4. Those who are familiar with the game’s lore will know that this is home to the Amazons, which fueled the speculation that the new playable class might be the brave vixens from this region.
Speculations aside, the Skovos Isles is known to be the home of Lilith and Inarius. Something tells me that they will have a crucial role to play in the upcoming expansion.
According to Blizzard, the Skovos Isles have plenty of places for you to explore, including sunken lands, volcanic landscapes, and rich forests. Of course, expect this region to be disturbed by the forces of Evil, especially because Mephisto has returned to Sanctuary!
New Endgame Mechanic: War Plans

Blizzard has done a good job of improving build diversity in Diablo 4. However, it should also be stated that the D4 lacks content in the endgame, which is what the company is trying to address in the Lord of Hatred expansion.
When the game’s next major expansion releases early next year, you can expect to engage with a new mechanic that supposedly fixes the lacking endgame content: the War Plans.
According to Blizzard, the War Plans enable you to combine various activities in the game into one. This includes Helltides, Tree of Whisper Quests, Nightmare Dungeons, and Lair Bosses.
By the looks of it, you will be able to tailor the experience according to what you love doing the most. For instance, you could probably include only Nightmare Dungeons and bosses in your War Plans if you don’t like the other activities, though you might still get all the items that those have to offer.
Additionally, the Lord of Hatred expansion will have you battle countless enemies via a new endgame activity known as the Echoing Hatred. Not much has been revealed about the Echoing Hatred apart from the fact that it is an endless horde mode of sorts.
In theory, the War Plans is a new system that could bring new life to the dull and boring endgame of the current D4. Maybe farming the Ring of Starless Skies won’t be much of a chore once this new feature is implemented, no?
The Return of an Icon: Horadric Cube

The Paladin is not the only thing that’s returning to Diablo because the Horadric Cube is slated to come back in the Lord of Hatred expansion as well!
If this is the first time you have heard about it, the Horadric Cube is an iconic item in Diablo II that allows you to transmute items and turn them into something much better! This thing can also create portals just by feeding it with the right ingredients.
Now, it would be interesting to see what the Horadric Cube can actually do in D4, given that you can already combine gems, upgrade potions, and even imprint legendary aspects on your gear without it. All that is clear right now is that it is going to be used for crafting.
New Feature: The Talisman System

The forces of evil are going to be a lot stronger now that Mephisto has come back in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. So, to ensure that you have enough power to slay the minions of Hell, Blizzard has added a new system that gives you just that—The Talisman System.
If you have played Diablo 4 for quite some time now, you have probably realized that there are no set items in the game. Set items refer to weapons and armor that, when equipped together, provide various bonuses to aid you in your fight against evil.
Although set items, per se, won’t be in the game’s next expansion, Blizzard is going to add something similar, and it comes in the form of the Talisman System.
From what I can surmise, the Talisman System could provide you with certain beneficial effects depending on the talismans you equip. Judging by the picture above, it looks like you can use six talismans at a time.
Skill Updates

Despite how complicated the skill tree appears in Diablo 4, it’s actually not that complex. If anything, it could use some improvement, especially with the increasingly challenging content that awaits you in the upcoming expansion.
Fortunately, Blizzard has acknowledged that, so the company has reworked the skill tree to provide more power. To understand why this is huge, let me tell you about the current skill tree.
Right now, you only have several skills at your disposal because most of your skill points will be allocated to the modifiers. Speaking of which, augmenting your skills is also quite limiting since there are really only two choices per ability. That is about to change in the Lord of Hatred expansion!
Not only will you be able to augment your skills, but you can also improve your abilities in a couple of different ways. For instance, the Sorcerer’s Ball Lightning can be modified in a way that forces it to stay in one place while dealing fire damage, too!
Loot Filter
As you complete The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons in the endgame, you will always be bombarded with items, most of which are either less powerful versions of what you’re currently using or entirely useless for your build. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a feature that could help reduce visual clutter significantly? Well, your prayers have been answered!
Blizzard will introduce a much-awaited feature called the Loot Filter! The Loot Filter is essentially a feature that lets you set which items you’d like to see on the screen while farming any endgame content.
If you’ve been dying to farm for a Wushe Nak Pa, but you constantly get disappointed because of the unnecessary items you see glowing on your screen, then the Loot Filter is designed specifically to address that!
Now, it is most likely that the D4 Loot Filter will be built into the game, as opposed to having to install something from a third-party source. More will be revealed next year, so stay tuned to our RPGStash Blog for more D4 updates!
Level Cap Increase
The current level cap in Diablo 4 is level 60. Because you are going to face more formidable foes in the Lord of Hatred expansion, it only stands to reason that you should get stronger as well.
For this reason, Blizzard has increased the level cap, possibly to level 70 (or even 80)! It is also reasonable to believe that the maximum Paragon Level that can be achieved in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred is 500 (up from 300 at the moment), though this still requires confirmation.
