Diablo 4: Season of Death Awakening is releasing very soon, and it brings a lot of things that will change the meta for better or worse. One notable change is that Mythic Uniques now have two fixed affixes and a couple of random ones. Besides that, Patch 3.1.0 has made a lot of balancing adjustments that favor some classes while making little to no changes for the others.

This guide will serve as your tier list for the best classes that you can choose in this season. Find out which class is best for SSF, leveling, lair bosses, speedfarming, and pit pushing. This article was written prior to the release of Season of Death Awakening, so the class tier list may change once the season goes live.

Diablo 4 Best Class Tier List: C Tier

Necromancer

The Necromancer is arguably one of the weakest classes this season, largely because it didn’t receive any meaningful changes in Patch 3.1.0 (apart from its class-specific uniques).

In terms of build diversity, the Necromancer still only has a few viable builds to tackle the majority of content in Diablo 4. These are the Blood Wave Necro, Minion Necro (Skeleton Mage), and the Bone Spirit Necro.

If there is any consolation, this class is good for leveling, especially when you use the Minion Necro build. It deals good damage even on budget gear, and it can transition to other builds after reaching level 70.

RPGStash does not recommend the Necromancer for Hardcore, as it does not have good defenses against tougher monsters. You can refer to our D4 Best Necromancer Builds article if you want to know which build you should run in the current season.

Warlock

Introduced in the Lord of Hatred expansion, the Warlock is a good character if you are bored with playing builds that only require a few button presses to kill the enemy. Most of the Warlock’s power comes from skill synergy, so utilizing most of its abilities is highly encouraged.

Having said that, the Warlock is decent at tackling all of the content that’s available in Diablo 4. The overall favorite is likely going to be the Lunatic Warlock, particularly because the Cage of Madness now has a guaranteed “Skill Ranks to Command Fallen” as one of its affixes. Additionally, this build is just so much fun to play.

The Apocalypse Warlock still deals solid damage, though bear in mind that the Hands of the Worldbreaker, which is a mandatory unique item for this build, does not have any bonus to skill ranks for Apocalypse.

Despite the awesome damage output in the later stages of the game, the Warlock is not ideal for leveling and speedfarming, mainly due to the lack of mobility options, as well as the naturally clunky gameplay (because you have to cast more skills relative to other classes).

Paladin

Among all of the D4 classes, the Paladin is a safe pick this season. Most of its popular builds in the past, including the Zeal Paladin, Divine Lance Paladin, and the Shield of Retribution Paladin, are still solid options in the current season.

Moreover, leveling and speedfarming are okay for the Paladin, especially because Falling Star has a very short cooldown, which you can use to move around wide areas in a jiffy.

If you are looking for a build that is solely for bossing, though, the Paladin may not be the best. This is because the nature of its skills is slow to ramp up in damage. However, once the Pally’s skills are rolling, the enemy is dead shortly after.

Having said that, the Paladin is a safe pick this season. All of the Paladin Oaths have their damage improved quite a bit, so you could come up with other builds than the ones mentioned above.

Druid

A tanky class that shreds, the Druid is pretty good this season, whether you use this class for pit pushing or accomplishing War Plans activities.

The Talismans that the Druid uses remain the same as in the previous season, so builds like the Storm Strike Druid, Shred Druid, Pulverize Druid, and Companion Druid.

Just take note that Heir of Perdition, Crown of Lucion, and Godslayer Crown, which were solid helmets for D4 Druid Builds back then, have been nerfed in Patch 3.1.0. Fortunately, you can stick to an Ancestral Legendary Helmet with the right aspect instead if you’re not happy with the adjustments.

Diablo 4 Best Class Tier List: A Tier

Sorcerer

On paper, the Sorcerer lost some power with the nerf to the Signet of Pelghain. For those who don’t know, this unique ring grants increased damage against frozen enemies, which used to apply to all damage types. In Patch 3.1.0, however, that damage boost only works for cold damage now, so those who still want to wear this unique jewelry must go all-in on cold damage Sorcerer builds in Diablo 4.

The Ball Lightning Sorcerer and Blizzard Sorcerer are good builds to start with, offering good damage and defense. If you’re not into that, you can experiment with Frozen Orb and Ice Shards, particularly using the Signet of Pelghain for a considerable boost in damage.

The Sorcerer is good for speedfarming because all builds can incorporate Teleport to move around. However, be careful when choosing this class in Hardcore because most of the Sorcerer’s defensive capabilities have cooldowns.

Spiritborn

If you have played the Evade Counterswarm build in the previous season of Diablo 4, then you will be happy to know that it is still the best Spiritborn build this season. Ring of the Writhing Moon, which is the main ring you should use for this build, now has a guaranteed poison damage multiplier. All you have to do after that is incorporate a vulnerable damage multiplier on the ring, and that should be good enough for all content this season!

On top of that, the Balazan’s Bite talisman set has its 3-set bonus buffed in Patch 3.1.0. Instead of giving only 30% maximum life, that number has been bumped up to 40%. Dealing poison damage to the enemy with this talisman set equipped heals you a portion of your max life, making the Evade Counterswarm build great for Hardcore as well.

The only issue here, really, is that there is only one build that is worth talking about this season. The rest of the Spiritborn builds are average, unless a hidden tech is discovered somehow.

Diablo 4 Best Class Tier List: S Tier

Barbarian

In the previous season, the Whirlwind Barbarian and the Ancients “Brobarian” builds are supreme. It seems that this is also the case in the current season, but with some notable changes.

For one, the Melted Heart of Selig no longer has lucky hit chance as a guaranteed affix, so tempers and enchantments that provide resource generation through lucky hit chance will suffer. Besides that, the Berserker’s Crucible talisman set, which is a complementary set with the Melted Heart of Selig, has its elite damage bonus reduced considerably (from 30% to 10%) in Patch 3.1.0. If there’s any consolation, you can now have damage multipliers instead of lucky hit chance on the Melted Heart of Selig via enchanting.

Anyway, the Barbarian is a solid class to pick for speedfarming, pit pushing, and Hardcore. You could add in bossing, but you have to be geared enough to kill bosses like Belial and Mephisto relatively quickly.

Rogue

The Rogue has surprisingly taken the crown this season, mainly because it is the only class that can put the Signet of Pelghain to good use. Most Rogue builds should now be centered around dealing cold damage, since the aforementioned ring’s damage modifier only applies to the said element. This is an easy fix with Cold Imbuement added into the mix.

The Penetrating Shot Rogue and the Heartseeker Rogue are S-Tier builds this season, though more builds may come to the fore when the community is able to come up with some crazy synergies.

Whether you are speedfarming, leveling, pit/tower pushing, or bossing, the Rogue is definitely up to the task. This class has solid damage, reliable defenses, and an easy playstyle, which is why the Rogue sits at the top of our best class tier list for Diablo 4 this season.

D4 Best Classes for Leveling

  • Rogue: Heartseeker, Twisting Blades, and Dance of Knives are great builds for leveling this season.
  • Spiritborn: The Evade Counterswarm deals heavy damage, even on a minimal investment. Get the necessary unique ring, and this build will be able to breeze through all content.

D4 Best Endgame Classes

  • Barbarian: Has relatively good build diversity, solid damage, good defenses, and fun gameplay. Go for Whirlwind, Ancients “Brobarian,” and Rend for this season, though you can experiment with other builds to see which one you like.
  • Rogue: One of the easiest classes to gear. Get the Signet of Pelghain for a massive damage boost. Dance of Knives, Penetrating Shot, Heartseeker, and Death Trap are good Rogue builds this season.
  • Spiritborn: The Evade Counterswarm build hits hard. However, it might be the only “true” viable endgame build for the Spiritborn this season, unless something comes up.

D4 Best Classes for Pits, Tower, and Leaderboards

  • Barbarian: Gohr’s Devastating Grips now has a guaranteed plus skill ranks for Whirlwind, making the Whirlwind Barbarian a default pick for tower and pit pushing. This build will cruise through the pits until Tier 115, though you have to have the right damage-boosting affixes on your gear if you want to push past that.
  • Rogue: Use Azurewrath and Signet of Pelghain, and the Rogue can dominate the leaderboards this season. Don’t forget to improve your defenses, especially when you reach the higher pit/tower levels.

FAQ

What is the Best Class for This Season?

The Rogue is the obvious choice for the best class this season, mainly because of its interaction with the Signet of Pelghain, as well as the changes to Mythic Uniques to have a couple of random affixes (which can be rolled with damage-boosting effects).

Which Class Fell Short This Season?

The Necromancer. This class did not have any impactful changes in Patch 3.1.0, other than its class-specific uniques getting guaranteed affixes. Build diversity for the Necromancer is bad, and only a few builds are actually good (minions, Bone Spirit, and Blood Wave).

What Changes This Season Have Impacted the Meta?

Uniques and Mythic Uniques can now roll a couple of affixes to make D4 builds better. However, some of the guaranteed affixes are mediocre, such as those of the Heir of Perdition, Melted Heart of Selig, and Shroud of False Death.
