Diablo 4 Solo Self-Found (SSF) mode is finally here! Those who were clamoring for Blizzard to implement a feature for lone wolves to have their own leaderboards can finally rejoice. This is because the recent season of this popular ARPG has introduced this feature via the latest update. However, the game’s implementation of this mode does have some stark differences, which we’ll get into in this Diablo 4 Solo Self-Found guide.
How Does Solo Self-Found Work in Diablo 4?

Solo Self-Found (or “SSF” for short) is a new mode in Diablo 4 that lets you create a character whose progress is entirely its own without the help of other people. Any D4 items that you get from your leveling journey, all the way to the endgame, cannot be traded because the ability to do so has been disabled in SSF.
Furthermore, grouping up with other players is forbidden in Solo Self-Found. Thus, Couch Co-Op and the Dark Citadel are unavailable, particularly because they require the help of others to accomplish objectives.
D4 SSF Caveats
Before you create a new character in Diablo 4 Solo Self-Found, there are some important things that you need to keep in mind. These are:
- Characters in Solo Self-Found are only available in Seasonal. This means that you cannot create one in the Eternal Realm right off the bat.
- Solo Self-Found is strict in the sense that there is absolutely no partying up with other players. Thus, the Party Finder and Dark Citadel cannot be accessed in SSF.
- Characters in SSF share their own stash, Paragon levels, and currency on the same account. So, if you had a Harlequin Crest drop on your first character, your second toon can equip it by putting the said item in the stash.
- Creating a character in Solo Self-Found mode is permanent in the sense that you cannot simply change modes in the middle of your journey. The only way for this to change is when the season is over, and your SSF characters are transferred to the Eternal Realm.
- After a season ends, your SSF characters will no longer have the Solo Self-Found tag, thus allowing them to party up and trade with other players.
The game explicitly tells you that your SSF character cannot change status during the course of the season in the character creation screen. So, if you are really convinced to be in Solo Self-Found, you have been properly warned.

Why Play in D4 Solo Self-Found
You are probably wondering why people would even consider playing in Diablo 4 Solo Self-Found mode, especially when you can just opt not to trade or group up with other players.
Well, the main incentive of playing in SSF is to rank up on the leaderboards without the help of other people. You see, it has been an open secret in the D4 community that those who get placed at the top of the leaderboards are often helped by others in a significant way. This is typically the case for popular streamers who have easy access to gear through the community that supports them.
Solo Self-Found mode quashes all of that and gives everyone a level playing field. If you see someone placed in the top spot of the leaderboards, you are assured that the player has done everything in their power to get to that point—all without anyone’s help.
Another major reason why people opt to play in SSF is that they are generally lone wolves, and they enjoy gearing up their characters themselves. Solo Self-Found just solidifies that by ensuring that trading and partying up with others are forbidden.
How to Unlock the Tower in D4 Solo Self-Found
Solo Self-Found has its own leaderboards for The Tower, so this begs the question: how do you unlock the Tower in Diablo 4 SSF? Well, the same rule applies here in that you have to finish the campaign at least once in your account.
Once you have accomplished that, create a character in Solo Self-Found Mode and finish Season Rank II by clearing the Hellish Descent dungeon on Penitent Difficulty. You can only enter the Hellish Descent if you are at least level 60.
After that is finished, you can now access The Pit and The Tower in Diablo 4. Take note that the official leaderboards in the game are only for The Tower, though some third-party websites offer rankings for The Pit (albeit unofficially).
Best Builds for Diablo 4 Solo Self-Found
If you are going to create a new character in D4 SSF, make sure that you opt for a build that can stand on its own without grouping up and trading with other people. That said, here are some of the builds that RPGStash recommends for Diablo 4 Solo Self-Found:
Whirlwind Barbarian
The Whirlwind Barbarian is still quite strong in the current season of Diablo 4, which is why many players go for this build when playing in SSF. The key to this build is the “Tornado” upgrade, which makes Whirlwind create a couple of Dust Devils that move around the area and deal so much damage.
You want to farm for Gohr’s Devastating Grips because this item not only boosts the damage of Whirlwind itself, but also pulls enemies into you every couple of seconds. Thanks to the recent update, unique items can now be of “Mythic” quality, granting improved unique power by 30%, making Gohr’s Devastating Grips stronger for this build.
Storm Shred Druid
The Storm Shred Druid is a lightning-fast build that has no problems tearing enemies to pieces. While it does require a couple of unique items to tap its true potential (Ifeh’s Dire Totem and Waxing Gibbous), this build should get you through all of the content in Diablo 4 with relative ease.
Aside from its huge damage output, the Storm Shred Druid has good survivability thanks to Debilitating Roar, which provides a massive boost in HP that lasts for several seconds. You supplement this with Gathlen’s Birthright for automatic Cyclone Armor activation, and you have a rock-solid build that almost never dies in Solo Self-Found.
Twisting Blades Rogue
A speedy build that only gets better as you get more items, the Twisting Blades Rogue deals strong poison damage. Despite its DoT playstyle, the Twisting Blades Rogue is actually quite fast in dispatching enemies, with strong poison applications that get amplified by Etna’s Lost Dagger.
If you do not like the poison version of this build, the Twisting Blades Rogue is flexible enough to transition to cold damage instead. For this to occur, you’d have to farm the Signet of Pelghain for maximum cold damage by freezing enemies.
Firewall Sorcerer
The Firewall Sorcerer is already strong with a minimal investment in gear. You don’t need any unique items to feel how powerful this build is, but there are certain legendary aspects that you need to get in order for that to come to fruition.
Aspect of the Untarnished Blaze provides a huge boost in Firewall damage when you are healthy. The Aspect of Elemental Constellation does the same, albeit at 240% increased damage rather than 105%.
The playstyle of this build is rather simple. Instead of casting Firewall, that process is automated with the Tal Rasha’s Threefold Way talisman set. All you have to do is cast the build’s other spells to take advantage of the “Ring of Fire” variant of Firewall to apply its DoT damage.
Bone Spirit Necromancer
If you are tired of the minion playstyle for Necromancers, then you’re going to love this next build. The Bone Spirit Necromancer lets you spam Bone Spirit by taking its “Core Skill” side upgrade. This forces Bone Spirit to be spammable at the cost of 30 Essence per cast. You just have to wear items that improve Essence Regeneration to ensure that you can continuously have Bone Spirit up while you are doing your War Plans and whatnot.
When you have Greater Lair Keys in your possession, you can target-farm The Butcher to have a chance of obtaining the Vengeful Sinew—a unique body armor for the Necromancer that makes Bone Spirit explode an additional time, thus improving clear speed.
Diablo 4 SSF Tips
- Farm Helltides Consistently: The Helltides are a great way to get huge amounts of EXP in Diablo 4. Make sure to reroll your War Plans until you get Helltides as one of your activities to gain activity XP.
- Accomplish Your War Plans: The War Plans are a great feature in Diablo 4 that lets you do several activities in a sequence to gain EXP and loot. We recommend that you do War Plans instead of the “regular” version of Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, and The Undercity so that you gain levels for these activities. When you do, you can allocate certain nodes that improve your experience with said activities.
- Choose a Good Starter Build: Although items and gold are shared across your characters in D4 SSF, you should begin your Solo Self-Found journey with a forgiving build that has low unique item dependency. Once you have farmed enough items, only then can you switch to other builds (or create new characters entirely).
- Focus on Efficiency First: When you choose the difficulty level for your SSF character, make sure to prioritize efficiency rather than going for the most challenging content. If you could clear a Nightmare Dungeon on Penitent in less than 5 minutes, but it requires you more than 7 minutes to do the same on Torment I, then stick to Penitent for a while until it becomes easier for you to slay enemies at higher difficulty levels.
- Target-Farm Bosses: Most builds in Diablo 4 can use a build-defining unique item (or two). Hence, search for the right lair boss and target farm that particular enemy to get your hands on that item. Once you do, your build should perform so much better than without it.
Should You Play Diablo 4 Solo Self-Found Mode?
D4 SSF has been a highly requested feature since the game’s inception. However, the question of whether you should play in this mode or stick to the regular seasonal version depends on a number of factors.
Play in Solo Self-Found mode if:
- You want to rank on the leaderboards without help from anyone.
- You are a person who prefers playing alone.
- You want to establish a build from scratch that accomplishes all content in the game without relying on a group.
On the other hand, you should not play in D4 SSF if:
- You want to group up with other people.
- You want to engage with the Dark Citadel and other types of content that require the participation of other players.
- You play with your friends.
