Part of what you do in an ARPG like Path of Exile 2 is to upgrade your gear every time something better drops for you. Although that new shiny piece of gear has all of the best modifiers in the game, it might not have good defenses, or at least, not yet.
There is a particular currency item that you can use to address that problem. That is, of course, the Armourer’s Scrap.

What Are Armourer’s Scrap in PoE 2?
The Armourer’s Scrap is a type of PoE 2 currency that you can use to upgrade your gear. Upgradeable armor pieces in the game include the helmet, body armor, gloves, and boots.
Unlike in Path of Exile 1 where you can upgrade the quality of an item to 30%, Armourer’s Scrap in PoE 2 is only limited to 20%. This is still quite acceptable considering that GGG made quality upgrades better in terms of what it can provide.
For any item that grants defenses like the ones mentioned above, every 1% quality increase translates to 1% more defense. So, if an armor-based rare helmet has the full 20% quality, for example, that means that it gains 20% more armor as a result.
Just so you know, Grinding Gear Games treats the words “increase” and “more” quite differently. The former term refers to any additive bonuses like increased evasion rating and increased energy shield. The latter, on the other hand, refers to any bonuses that are calculated multiplicatively.
What that means is any flat sources of defense from the item that has been qualitied up by Armourer’s Scrap gets so much more in return rather than an “increased defense” modifier ever could. So if a pair of boots has a flat value of 100 armor on it, using the Armourer’s Scrap allows you to get even more defense.
You don’t have to concern yourself with the technical stuff, though. You just have to bear in mind that any upgrades done to your gear are a welcome thing to do in Path of Exile 2, especially in the endgame where enemies hit harder and bosses can one-shot those who are not prepared defensively.
How to Use Armourer’s Scrap
As mentioned earlier in our PoE 2 Armourer’s Scrap Guide, this particular currency item can be used on your main pieces of gear to improve its defenses. These include the helmet, body armor, gloves, and boots. You get about 1-3% increased quality per scrap.
The thing about the Armourer’s Scrap is that it can be used no matter what the rarity of the item is. Even if you only have a normal item, you can still use it, though we recommend this only if you intend on crafting said item later on.
The Armourer’s Scrap can be utilized on unique items as well. In fact, we highly encourage you to spend it on these items, especially if you plan on using those for your endgame PoE 2 build.
For instance, if you are going to play an Ice Strike Monk with the Hand of Wisdom and Action as a core part of your setup, then utilizing the Armourer’s Scrap is definitely a top priority to improve the gloves’ defenses.
How to Get Armourer’s Scraps
There are a couple of ways to obtain Armourer’s Scraps in Path of Exile 2. The first is via a random drop by defeating monsters in the game. This method is the least efficient because it is heavily reliant on RNG.
The second and most approachable method of acquiring Armourer’s Scrap is by salvaging gear that already has quality on it. So, where exactly do you get these things? Before that, we’ll discuss how to salvage items first.
How to Unlock the Salvage Bench
The Salvage Bench is one of the utility benches that you will interact with a lot in PoE 2. This allows you to salvage items in exchange for some crafting currencies. The type of PoE 2 currency you get depends on the item you have salvaged.
For the purposes of this article, any piece of gear will give you an Armourer’s Scrap depending on how much quality the salvaged item has. A pair of boots that has 15% quality, for example, will give you at least a few Armourer’s Scraps when salvaged.
Having said that, to unlock the Salvage Bench, you have to complete a side quest in Act 1 called “Finding the Forge.” Renly instructs you to search for his blacksmithing tools in Ogham Village. You have to finish several quests in the first act of the campaign before he gives you this mission.
Anyway, once you arrive in the village, search for a collection of burning houses. You will know that you’re in the right place if there is a checkpoint right before you head into a building that’s been ravaged by flames.
Once inside, the Smithing Tools should be in plain sight but you have to defeat the nearby enemies that might kill you if they’re not dealt with.
After obtaining the smithing tools, head back to Clearfell Encampment, and talk to Renly. After a brief thank you, the Salvage Bench will be located near Renly’s location in town. When you’ve unlocked the Salvage Bench, it should be found in every major town in the game. You now also gain the ability to put the said utility bench inside your hideout, though this comes much later after you’ve completed the campaign.
What is the purpose of the Salvage Bench, you ask? In the context of getting Armourer’s Scraps, you can use this utility bench to gain some of the said currency by salvaging gear with quality on them.
When you are presented with the UI, click that small hammer icon. Any salvageable gear that you have in your inventory will be highlighted similar to the picture above. Once you are ready, click on any highlighted item and it will give some Armourer’s Scrap in return.
Tips
Look for “Superior” Items
You can easily tell if a piece of gear has improved quality or not just by looking at the item’s prefix. If it has “Superior” in its name, then that is a clear indication that you can salvage it for Armourer’s Scraps.
Take note that the superior prefix is only visible on normal rarity items. Magic or Rare items that have improved quality already may not appear as such, which means that you still have to hover over them.
Use a Loot Filter
Another way to easily tell if a piece of gear has quality on it is by using a loot filter. A loot filter is something that you can install for PoE 2 that essentially removes the clutter when farming items in the game.
When a loot filter is installed, it will automatically highlight the border of the item, which signifies an item quality that is above 0%. Here is an example of this in action:

Although you can create a loot filter yourself, Filterblade has already made a noob-friendly filter that you can download straight from the website.
Check the Vendors Often
The vendors in Path of Exile 2 are actually more useful now than they were in PoE 1. Every time your character levels up, the items that they sell will often be refreshed with new ones. Occasionally, some items with quality on them will pop up, which you can then purchase with Gold.
That said, you don’t even have to hover over each item individually. Simply type “quality” on the search box at the bottom and it will instantly highlight improved quality items for you.
When you have copious amounts of Gold already, you can replenish the vendor’s stock without having to wait for a level-up. All you have to do is buy what they’re currently selling and then conclude the interaction. Speak to them again immediately after and the item slots that were previously empty will be replenished with new ones. Just hope that the fresh stock contains one or two items with quality.
If you are a beginner in Path of Exile 2 and you don’t have a lot of disposable gold with you just yet, what you can do is visit every vendor in each town of the different acts for quality gear. Start with Act 1 Cruel Difficulty and go from there.
Buy Additional Stash Tabs
It is a bit tedious to have to check on every vendor in the game for quality gear. If you don’t like that strategy, you can simply just farm the different maps in Path of Exile 2, particularly with those that have increased item quantity and rarity modifiers. Running such maps will have a much higher chance of dropping gear that you can salvage for Armourer’s Scraps.
Now, the reason why you want additional stash tabs is so that you can salvage all items in one go. Basically, any item that you acquire will be placed inside the stash for storage. Only when you are ready to salvage them in bulk, will you place them back in your inventory.
This is not mandatory whatsoever but there are people who would only focus on one thing (like farming only or salvaging only). Thus, any stash that you can devote primarily for storing quality gear for later use is a godsend.
Go Check the Currency Exchange
The Armourer’s Scrap is considered a type of currency in Path of Exile 2. Hence, you can find it being traded in the Currency Exchange for various other currencies. If you want to go this route, go for PoE 2 Exalted Orbs as the primary currency for trade because this should give you consistent results all the time.
Other types of PoE 2 currency you can use to trade for Armourer’s Scrap include Chaos Orbs, Glassblower’s Baubles, and Gemcutter’s Prisms.

The Armourer’s Scrap is one of those items in Path of Exile 2 that you really need, especially in the endgame where defenses matter the most. Without this currency item, your character will be quite squishy, enabling your enemies to make quick work of you.
