Many Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict players are really enjoying the Lightning Spear Amazon due to its sheer power and ability to clear map monsters with ease. However, that is not the only build that is dominating the charts right now because the Essence Drain Contagion Lich is certainly one of the best in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0!

If you are interested in learning the items, skills, and main rotation of this build, then we invite you to read further. This is our full build guide for the Essence Drain Contagion Lich in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict!

Just a reminder: If you need any help with securing items and currency to buy the best gear possible for this build, then head to our PoE 2 Currency Store at any time!

Why Play the Essence Drain Contagion Lich in Patch 0.3.0?

The Essence Drain Contagion Lich is an awesome league starter with plenty of gear upgrades later down the line. This build relies on dealing heavy chaos damage over time. Hence, it is sometimes referred to as the “Chaos DoT Lich.”

That said, the main skill of this build is Essence Drain (ED). This is a projectile skill that applies a debuff on enemies, making them suffer from increasing damage over time depending on your total spell damage.

Contagion, on the other hand, is just a means of applying that chaos DoT debuff on nearby enemies. Thus, it is only utilized whenever you are surrounded by a bunch of monsters at a time.

While the combo of Essence Drain and Contagion can pretty much deal with any monster you come across, both of them require a bit more power when fighting against bosses and rare monsters. That is why you are going to use Dark Effigy as well.

Dark Effigy is a totem you can put down that helps eliminate tougher foes. What this totem does is continuously fire at enemies that are suffering from chaos damage over time (which is a condition that is already satisfied by Essence Drain and Contagion).

This particular PoE 2 build does insanely well when paired with a high spell damage wand with “+ to Level of Spell Skills.” If you want to buy this wand, you can visit our PoE 2 Store.

The ideal ascendancy class for this build is none other than the Lich. This ascendancy class has access to insane mana regeneration thanks to the Soulless Form. But more importantly, the Essence Drain Contagion is virtually unkillable thanks to the ascendancy node aptly called Eternal Life.

Eternal Life is amazing because it lets you take advantage of effects that activate only when you are in low life— all without dying, of course! Passive nodes like “Final Barrage” and “Quick Response” greatly enhance your cast speed and energy shield recharge when on low life, respectively.

Eldritch Empowerment grants a whopping 30% more spell damage to your primary skills, with the downside being that your spells incur a 3% ES cost while casting. That is fine because casting your spells won’t interrupt energy shield recharge at all, particularly when you have Eldritch Empowerment allocated.

For the last ascendancy node, you can choose either Rupture the Soul or Crystalline Phylactery. The former is great when you are still in the process of putting up your endgame character, while the latter is amazing if you have a mirror-tier jewel already in your possession.

All in all, here is the ideal order of ascendancy nodes for the Essence Drain Contagion Lich:

  1. Eldritch Empowerment
  2. Soulless Form
  3. Eternal Life
  4. Rupture the Soul OR Crystalline Phylactery

Gearing the Essence Drain Contagion Lich is easy. All you have to do is search for the following modifiers on your pieces of gear:

  • Increased Spell Damage
  • Increased Chaos Damage
  • + to Level of All Spell Skills
  • + to Level of All Chaos Skills
  • Increased Cast Speed
  • + to Maximum Energy Shield
  • Increased Energy Shield
  • + to Intelligence
  • Increased Mana Regeneration Rate

Playstyle

You do not need to do much when playing the Chaos DoT Lich build in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. For the most part, just use Essence Drain to fire a projectile that applies a heavy chaos damage debuff. When you are surrounded by monsters, that is the only time you will use Contagion to spread the Chaos DoT debuff.

When fighting against tougher enemies, drop a couple of Dark Effigies to destroy them. Take note that these totems only fire when the enemy is affected by Essence Drain, so if you see that they are not doing anything, you probably forgot to apply ED.

Don’t forget to drop the Sigil of Power when you encounter bosses. This grants more spell damage while you are casting your skills within its area of effect.

After taking considerable damage, you can force energy shield recharge to commence by activating Convalescence. Only treat this as your last resort to get you out of sticky situations.

Essence Drain Contagion Lich Gear Recommendations

The Chaos DoT Lich is an incredible league starter due to the fact that it doesn’t require any expensive items. However, you do benefit from a couple of uniques, which we will cover in this section.

If you want to get your hands on any of the items that will be highlighted in this section of our PoE 2 build guide, you can purchase them in our PoE 2 Store.

Weapon

The bulk of your damage comes from the wand you are going to use. Get one that has increased spell damage, chaos damage, and cast speed early on. Once you have enough PoE 2 Divine Orbs, invest in a wand that has “+5 to Level of All Chaos Spell Skills.” This particular modifier boosts the damage and effects of all your primary skills in rotation, including Essence Drain, Contagion, Dark Effigy, and Despair.

If you roll “Gain Damage as Extra Lightning Damage” on the wand, your Dark Effigy totems can inflict Shock on the enemy, thus making them suffer increased damage from your spells.

Offhand

For the offhand, you want a caster focus that has increased spell damage or chaos damage, a couple of energy shield mods, and “+2 to Level of All Spell Skills. The rest of the modifiers can be anything your particular character needs, such as intelligence, mana regeneration rate, or resistance modifiers.

Body Armor

Your choice of body armor is crucial because it can determine how much maximum energy shield you will have. That said, we recommend two armor base types—Flowing Raiment for its increased mana regeneration rate implicit modifier or Vile Robe for its high base energy shield.

Ideally, you want either of these body armors to get the trifecta of ES modifiers. The suffixes can be anything you want, though you could roll chaos resistance on this thing, especially since you are not going to take Chaos Inoculation on this build.

If you do not have the means of purchasing the endgame armor just yet, you can settle with the new Waveshaper for the time being. Introduced as part of the roster of unique items in Patch 0.3.0, the Waveshaper not only provides you with a considerable boost in maximum energy shield but it also makes mana regeneration rate apply to energy shield recharge rate, thus significantly improving your survivability.

Helmet

As mentioned earlier, the Chaos DoT Lich can make use of a couple of unique items. The first one is Atziri’s Disdain for its bonus maximum energy shield based on a percentage of your total HP.

We recommend that you buy a corrupted one that has a couple of sockets. You can either put Greater Iron Runes for more base energy shield or two Bear Talismans for the increased area of effect of your skills.

Gloves

One of your goals when playing the Essence Drain Contagion Lich is to have high amounts of energy shield. As such, you follow the same philosophy on your gloves and boots.

For the gloves, in particular, you could roll “Gain Mana per Enemy Killed” to help you recover some mana, especially after casting a high-level chaos damage spell like Dark Effigy or Despair.

Boots

Prioritize getting a 35% increased movement speed modifier on your boots. After that, include a stun threshold mod on the boots because it comes in handy when you are surrounded by monsters in the higher-tier maps.

If you do not find the stun threshold mod to be useful, you could replace that with the increased rarity of items instead.

Amulet

There are three important modifiers that your amulet should have. The first is at least 40 Spirit, which is a requirement given that this build needs 140 Spirit to activate everything.

The second is “+3 to Level of All Spell Skills.” This amplifies the effects of all your skills, including your main damage dealers, as well as your utility spells like Convalescence and Sigil of Power.

The third is increased cast speed. Having a relatively high amount of cast speed makes the Chaos DoT Lich feel less clunky to play.

When you have purchased a rare amulet with +3 skills and 40 Spirit, do not forget to instill the “Reverberation” notable passive skill to greatly increase the area of effect of your abilities. Reverberation requires Distilled Paranoia, Distilled Guilt, and Distilled Fear (placed in that order), which are relatively affordable Distilled Emotions for what you are getting.

Rings

In the beginning, invest in a couple of Amethyst Rings to sort out your chaos resistance. Once you have enough PoE 2 Currency, get a couple of Breach Rings that have chaos damage and chaos resistance.

Use the ring slots to populate your character with items that address your build’s shortcomings. Do you still need some fire and lightning resistance to cap them? You can have those in the rings. Do you want increased item rarity? Your rings can roll that modifier as well.

Do not forget to use Chayula’s Catalysts to improve the chaos modifiers on your rings.

Belt

Grinding Gear Games launched a series of updates that already give additional charm slots on all belts. Having said that, if you are opting for a rare belt, you can have a couple of modifiers that improve Charms in some way. For instance, you can have increased charm charges gained so that you can reuse charms in a short amount of time.

A well-rolled belt is already good enough for the Essence Drain Contagion Lich. However, if you will not settle for less and would like to eke out every last bit of power, you might as well invest in Ingenuity.

Yes, Ingenuity has been nerfed in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0, but it still remains a top option for certain builds like the Chaos DoT Lich, for example. Just make sure that there are no negative modifiers on the Ingenuity Belt you are going to get.

If you do not want to leave it to chance and get the best possible rolls, you can buy Ingenuity from our PoE 2 Store.

Charms

The topic of charms was never really expounded upon back then because, for the most part, you could only have one charm slot realistically in Path of Exile 2. However, things have changed (for the better) in Patch 0.3.0 since most belts already come with at least one additional charm slot.

Having said that, the choice of charms for the Essence Drain Contagion Lich are:

  • Thawing Charm
  • Stone Charm
  • Silver Charm

When you have enough PoE 2 Currency, there are a couple of unique charms that you can invest in. The first is Nascent Hope—a unique Thawing Charm that forces energy shield recharge to begin when you become frozen. You can buy Nascent Hope from our online shop.

If you search for unique items on the trade website, you have probably come across The Fall of the Axe and wondered why it’s expensive. Well, it is priced high because of the fact that it can activate Onslaught whenever you are affected by a slow effect like Temporal Chains or Maim.

Onslaught, for those who are new to Path of Exile 2, is a buff that grants 20% increased skill speed and 10% increased movement speed for a short period of time. If you are interested in buying The Fall of the Axe, you can get one in our PoE 2 Store.

Jewels

One of the best things about the Essence Drain Contagion Lich is that it doesn’t require any expensive jewels to operate. That said, here are the modifiers that you should look for when buying jewels off trade:

  • Increased Maximum Energy Shield
  • Increased Spell Damage
  • Increased Chaos Damage
  • Increased Cast Speed
  • Increased Duration of Damaging Elements on Enemies
  • Increased Mana Regeneration Rate
  • Gain Additional Stun Threshold Equal to % of Maximum Energy Shield
  • Increased Effect of Withered
  • Increased Energy Shield Recharge Rate
  • Faster Start of Energy Shield Recharge

If you are going to allocate the "Crystalline Phylactery" ascendancy node, reserve your best jewel and place it into the special jewel socket directly on the ascendancy tree.

Skills

Essence Drain

  • Swift Affliction
  • Chain
  • Considered Casting
  • Chaos Mastery
  • Intense Agony
  • Note: You can swap Intense Agony with Zenith if you are able to maintain your mana above 90%. Zenith is more consistent, so long as you are able to regenerate mana fast enough to activate its effect.

Contagion

  • Unleash
  • Magnified Effect
  • Hinder
  • Arcane Surge
  • Chaotic Freeze
  • Note: You can switch Chaotic Freeze for Energy Barrier if you want more survivability

Dark Effigy

  • Envenom
  • Overabundance
  • Controlled Destruction
  • Arcane Tempo
  • Ancestral Urgency
  • Note: Replace Ancestral Urgency with Execute when fighting bosses

Despair

  • Inspiration
  • Cursed Ground
  • Decaying Hex
  • Note: If your mana permits, you can socket Heightened Curse in here as well

Blasphemy

  • Temporal Chains
  • Encumbrance
  • Ritualistic Curse

Withering Presence

  • Persistence
  • Clarity
  • Mysticism

Convalescence

  • Ingenuity

Blink

  • Note: Set to Weapon Set 2 with no other Spirit buffs active

Sigil of Power

  • Note: This is on weapon swap. Equip the Chiming Staff as your second weapon to get Sigil of Power

Passive Tree

Early on, take the nodes that increase your damage first like Raw Destruction, Entropy, and Potent Incarnation. After arriving at the top-middle portion of the passive tree, head left until you get Enhanced Barrier. Once that is done, head right until you get Pure Chaos and Wither Away.

When you have the above-mentioned nodes allocated, start getting all of the energy shield nodes on the passive tree. Nodes like Insightfulness, Melding, Heavy Buffer, and Patient Barrier are of top priority. Then, prioritize getting "energy shield recharge" nodes like Convalescence, Essence Infusion, and Quick Response.

Take note that the red lines indicate passive nodes that only apply to Weapon Set 1, while the green lines affect only those skills that are specifically enabled in Weapon Set 2. That said, the "curse nodes" should only be taken after the passive skills mentioned above have been allocated. It should also go without saying that Despair must be set to Weapon Set 2 to take advantage of the curse nodes on the passive tree.

Tips and Strategies [Patch 0.3.0]

Take Rupture the Soul Early On

Crystalline Phylactery, while quite useful, is only good if you have an awesome jewel to socket into the special slot. Rupture the Soul provides more value early on, especially considering that you can blow enemies up and deal considerable damage even on budget gear.

Prioritize Capping Chaos Resistance

Chaos Inoculation should not be allocated on this build because you are taking advantage of some passive nodes that only take effect when you are in low life (such as Final Barrage and Quick Response).

That is why it is imperative that you make capping your chaos resistance a top priority. You can get chaos resistance on almost every piece of gear that you wear. If you need a little help with this, you can also use the Soul Core of Tacati just to reach 75% chaos resistance.

Reduce the Level of Despair

Despair is an important part of your kit because it greatly reduces the chaos resistance of enemies affected by the said curse. However, utilizing a high-level Despair does eat up quite a lot of your mana.

So, unless you are able to recover your mana quickly, you might want to reduce the level of your Despair skill to level 7. This way, you are still reducing the chaos resistance of your enemies considerably without wasting all of your mana in the process.

Now, this does not mean that you shouldn’t use a high-level Despair skill. This is just to say that you have to sort out your mana regeneration to address the high cost of using Despair.

Get The Fall of the Axe

The Fall of the Axe unique charm is expensive for a reason. It basically gives you a free speed boost whenever you are slowed down by the enemy. Sure, it does require a lot of PoE 2 Currency to obtain, but the investment is definitely worth it.

How to Do the 'Low Life' Trick

Certain nodes on the passive tree only provide you with beneficial effects if you are at "low life" or your HP is below 35% of your maximum. In case you are not aware, you can actually reduce your life just enough to be considered in this state—all without dying! How do you do that, you ask?

Well, equip the Visage of Ayah unique helmet to convert all your energy shield to mana (due to its inherent Eldritch Battery). Then, place the Lifetap support gem into Dark Effigy and cast the said totem skill three times. Doing this should put your HP below 35%, which will then activate all of the "low life" bonuses that you have. Re-equip Atziri’s Disdain afterward.

Do not worry. You will not die even though your HP has been reduced considerably. This is because of Eternal Life, which is an ascendancy node that ensures your HP won’t budge while you still have some energy shield left.

POB

Essence Drain Contagion Lich

PoE 2 Essence Drain Contagion Lich in Patch 0.3.0: Final Thoughts

The Essence Drain Contagion Lich is a build that you can rely on to farm PoE 2 Currency early on. This does not require expensive items to pull off, though you can certainly take advantage of a few to make this build shine even further!

Essence Drain allows you to fire a projectile that applies a powerful debuff on enemies. Those who have been affected by the said spell suffer from heavy chaos damage over time. Contagion plays more of a support role here as it spreads the debuff to more monsters in close proximity.

When you need more firepower, you can lay down the Dark Effigy. This totem fires projectiles continuously as long as there are nearby targets that are affected by Essence Drain or Contagion.

You do not really need expensive gear just to enjoy the Chaos DoT Lich. Just invest in a good wand and it should be a smooth-sailing experience from that point onward.

So, there you have it! We hope that you have enjoyed our build guide for the Essence Drain Contagion Lich. If you have any questions about the build, feel free to leave a comment.

Don’t forget that all of the items featured in this guide, especially the unique items like Ingenuity and The Fall of the Axe, are all available in our PoE 2 Store. Be sure to check them out after reading this build guide!

PROS

  • Impressive screen-clearing ability even on a budget
  • Amazing league starter that allows you to farm PoE 2 Currency early on
  • Almost unkillable with the right gear thanks to Lich’s Eternal Life node

CONS

  • Relatively "slow" playstyle because of the damage over time mechanics of the build’s primary skills
  • May not be the most ideal for those who want more "direct damage dealing" abilities
  • Endgame gear is expensive
