Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients will be released on May 29. This is the game’s prelude to what’s to come in the official release. That said, this expansion is PoE 2’s biggest yet, containing new ascendancy classes, new features, and a massive overhaul to some endgame systems like Breach, Delirium, Ritual, and Expedition.

PoE 2 is still in Early Access, which means that you have to get an EA key to play. Fortunately, GGG is going to have a free weekend that allows those who don’t have the EA key to enjoy Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients without an upfront cost. This period lasts from May 29 to June 1 (Monday) at 4 PM EDT.

In addition, GGG is handing out free microtransactions to players if they watch their favorite Twitch streamers that have the “DropsEnabled” tag for three hours. The company will do this for two weeks, with an additional reward if you support a streamer.

The first Twitch Drop happens on launch day, May 29, and will end on June 6 at 4:59 AM PDT. Watching your favorite PoE 2 streamers for a few hours rewards you with the Arbiter of Ash Waypoint MTX.

To be able to receive Twitch Drops, you have to make sure that you link your Path of Exile 2 account with your account on Twitch. After viewing your favorite PoE 2 streamer for three hours, check out the Drops Inventory to claim your reward.

What is PoE 2 Return of the Ancients?

Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients is the game’s fourth major content update, and saying that it is a “major” update is an understatement. You are essentially getting a massive overhaul of the game, including several endgame systems like Breach, Delirium, Ritual, and Expedition.

Let’s take a closer look at the league mechanic for Patch 0.5.0.

PoE 2 Runes of Aldur League

Patch 0.5.0 will bring PoE 2’s first-ever challenge league called Runes of Aldur. Here, you will aid Farrow, a Kalguuran blacksmith who is eager to discover the secrets of Ezomyte Runesmithing. You can find him in the first area of the game, surrounded by monsters. Defeating the monsters prompts him to give you a short backstory of what he was actually doing there.

PoE 2 Runes of Aldur League

Throughout your journey, you will encounter these things called “Remnants” that, when interacted with, show you an interface that lets you insert runes. Some runes are already on there, and all you have to do is choose the rest to complete a certain recipe. This league mechanic rewards you with various PoE 2 currency items, which expand further as you progress through the story.

PoE 2 Remnants rune interface

The Remnants may appear with 2 to 10 slots, with the higher-slot Remnants being capable of producing more valuable rewards. However, you have to keep in mind that each rune grants the monsters that you will fight in the ensuing battle a modifier that is based on that. So, choosing the Fire Rune will give the enemy some fire-based attacks as a result.

Over time, you will be able to get rarer and rarer items in the PoE 2 Runes of Aldur’s league mechanic. Just make sure that you can handle the mobs because they’re not going to be easy to defeat.

Aside from that, this new league mechanic unlocks Verisium Runeforging—a new crafting system in PoE 2 Runes of Aldur League that lets you add Runic Ward to your gear. Runic Ward is a new defensive layer that activates when you reach 1 HP of life. It takes damage separately and regenerates independently, giving you another layer of survivability. Be careful, though, because once that Runic Ward is completely depleted and you take damage, you will suffer death.

PoE 2 New Ascendancy Class: Spirit Walker

PoE 2 New Ascendancy Class Spirit Walker

Patch 0.5.0 also brings a couple of new ascendancy classes for you to try out. The first is the Spirit Walker, which is the third ascendancy class for the Huntress that has the power to tame even the wildest of beasts.

The Spirit Walker has a node called “The Natural Order” that enables her to tame unique monsters. And yes, this includes bosses as well! GGG teased the monsters that you can tame, such as Xyclucian, the Chimera from the Chimera Wetlands, and the Mighty Silverfist from the Jungle Ruins in Act 3.

Aside from that, the PoE 2 Spirit Walker has the power to commune with certain animal spirits, namely the Owl, Stag, and Bear. Choosing the right nodes grants the Spirit Walker certain abilities that help her eliminate monsters.

For instance, the “Vivid Stampede” ascendancy node gives the Spirit Walker a new skill of the same name. When allocated, she gains up to three Vivid Wisps that, when expended, create a violent stampede of Stag Spirit beasts to deal considerable amounts of damage to any monster they come across.

Those who love taming powerful beasts might want to give the Spirit Walker in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients a try.

PoE 2 New Ascendancy Class: Martial Artist

PoE 2 New Ascendancy Class Martial Artist

The Martial Artist is the third ascendancy class available to the Monk. He has mastered a few forms of “Hollow” techniques that help him eliminate monsters with relative ease. For example, the Hollowed Focus Technique lets the PoE 2 Martial Artist conjure some ghostly bells from time to time. These bells can be struck, dealing damage in an area via a shockwave in the process.

However, what separates the Martial Artist from the rest of the ascendancy classes in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients is that he is the only one capable of inserting five more runes into his body. With over 60 new runes in Patch 0.5.0, this may provide the Martial Artist with so much power just by taking one ascendancy node (called “Runic Meridians”).

With how much power he can gain from his ascendancy nodes alone, it is more than likely that the Martial Artist might be one of the most played ascendancies in PoE 2 Runes of Aldur League.

Endgame and Atlas Changes

GGG has done a remarkable job of changing various aspects of the game, especially to improve the endgame experience. In Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients, you can expect a much-improved Atlas, including its passive tree, progression, and types of content that you can engage in.

One of the most notable changes is that the endgame systems are now located at specific locations on the Atlas. This is so that you can move towards a certain direction if you want to do only one type of content. That said, here is a rundown of the endgame systems based on the direction where you can find them:

  • East: Abyss
  • West: Ritual
  • Southwest: Delirium
  • South: Breach
  • North: Vaal City (Vaal Temple)

The Fortress

The Fortress

As part of the overhauled endgame experience in the PoE 2 Runes of Aldur League, a towering fortress will appear whenever you clear the first Lost Tower. This new fortress houses one of the new pinnacle bosses in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients—the Arbiter of Divinity!

Arbiter of Divinity

Masters of the Atlas

Masters of the Atlas

To spice up your endgame experience, GGG has introduced the Masters of the Atlas system as part of Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients. These “masters” are NPCs that you are already familiar with, namely Jado, Hilda, and Doryani. You can think of them as the “ascendancy classes for your Atlas.”

These masters will provide you with some bonuses that can alter your mapping experience, making it more rewarding. For instance, Jado has the “Trove Seekers” node, which gives the Strongboxes that you can find in your maps a 100% chance to drop a unique item.

Each master has 12 nodes that you can choose from, though you can only have four nodes active at the same time. You can switch between these masters at any time you see fit, depending on what you are trying to achieve while farming.

New Pinnacle Bosses

Because most of the endgame systems got reworked in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients, GGG deemed it necessary to add new pinnacle bosses for you to defeat in Patch 0.5.0. Here is a brief list:

  • Fortress: Arbiter of Divinity
  • Delirium: Tangmazu, the Raven Trickster
  • Breach: “It That Was Tul” and “It That Was Esh”
  • Ritual: The Queen in the Mists

GGG also teased a new unique boss that you can fight in the PoE 2 Runes of Aldur League. Before you have a chance of defeating this new threat, you have to face Olroth, who will reward you with a key that gives you access to the new boss.

Revamped Atlas Passive Tree

The overhaul to the Atlas System will not be complete without changing the Atlas Passive Tree as well. True enough, the Atlas Passive Tree received some massive improvements in Patch 0.5.0. Chief among them is that you can now allocate every node on the passive tree. This only refers to the general passive tree, since the trees specific to the various endgame systems have their own. There are about 287 nodes on here, which would allow you to tinker with your endgame experience according to your preferences.

Revamped Atlas Passive Tree

Because you can now allocate every node on the Atlas Passive Tree, GGG has also added multi-choice nodes scattered throughout. For instance, the “Fabled Showdown” node gives you the following choices:

  1. 25% Chance Shrine Buffs are reapplied when entering the Boss Arena.
  2. 25% Chance Shrine Buffs are instead applied to the Boss when activated, granting an additional reward.

The reason for this change is that the developers want you to have more control over how you want your endgame experience to be. Do you want to give bosses additional buffs and bonuses in exchange for better loot? Do you want to give Rogue Exiles a chance to escape, only for them to come back at a later time with better equipment (and a grudge against you)? All of these things are possible with the newly overhauled Atlas Passive Tree in Patch 0.5.0!

Other Endgame Changes

There are other noteworthy changes to the endgame in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients. Here are just some of them:

  • You can now zoom out even further on the Atlas Map.
  • There are now two versions of each pinnacle boss: the quest version and the “Infinite Farm” version. The latter is harder but more rewarding.
  • Tablets of the same type can now be used together to increase the amount of the league content that is spawned. In some cases, adding multiple tablets will increase the size of a single encounter, while in other cases, it will increase the number of encounters spawned.
  • You can now use Orb of Chance on tablets (possibly turning them into unique tablets if you are lucky).
  • Some items now require you to specialize in them (through the Atlas Passive Tree). These items include Fracturing Orbs, Basic/Overseer Precursor Tablets, and exceptional items, among others.
  • Bonuses from Waystones now provide more monster effectiveness, pack size, item rarity, monster rarity, and Waystone drop chance, depending on the modifier. These modifiers are multiplicative with other bonuses, such as those found on the Atlas Passive Tree.

Reworked League Mechanics

Several endgame systems have been overhauled in Patch 0.5.0. Each of these pieces of content now has its own storyline for you to complete, unlocking new possibilities once achieved. Let’s take a closer look at these changes in the next sections.

Breach Rework

For Breach, you have the new “Waking the Dreamer” storyline. When you travel south, you will come across Ailith, who is part of a group that’s responsible for keeping Wraeclast safe from the Hiveborn. There is also a new hub called “The Monastery of the Keepers,” where you will find the Genesis Tree.

The Genesis Tree should be familiar to fans of the original game. But for those who don’t know what it is, the Genesis Tree is a new crafting system, where you can incubate items by feeding it some “Wombgifts” that you can acquire when completing Breaches.

Having said that, the Breach encounter itself received some improvements, such as:

  • A clear progress bar that indicates how much time you have left before the Breach closes. Killing enemies will give you more time.
  • Reaching 100% on the progress bar will “stabilize” the Breach, after which, you will fight a new boss named Vruun, Marshal of Xesht.
  • Undiscovered areas covered in black fog will be “revealed” when you use a Breachstone. These areas are called “Breach Domains.”
  • Inside Breach Domains are maps that contain new encounters, including Sky Hives, Breach Hives, and Sky Fortresses.
  • Breach Hives contain walls that can be broken down just by walking through them. Each time a wall is destroyed, monster density is increased in the encounter.
  • Sky Hives are more challenging because you will have to complete a series of waves while defending Ailith as she closes the Breach.
  • Sky Fortresses, on the other hand, house the new bosses, Tul and Esh. Defeating them will give you access to Xesht, who happens to reside in the Monastery of the Keepers.

Delirium Rework

If you wish to engage with the newly overhauled Delirium mechanic in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients, you’ll have to complete “The Raven and the Hare” storyline. A new hub area called “The Withered Willow” can be found in the southwest portion of the Atlas from your starting location. Head there to begin your journey.

When engaging with the Delirium Mirror in maps, there is now a progress bar shown at the bottom of the screen that indicates how deep you are in the fog. This is a good chance, considering that you’d have to guess when Delirium ends prior to Patch 0.5.0.

Additionally, there is now a new set of Delirium Encounters that will also be indicated in the progress bar (with a different color). When you reach those thresholds, new mechanics will appear, depending on what was indicated.

For example, when the bar passes the “red crystal” icon on the bar, a red mirror shard will spawn on the map. Interacting with it transports you to a new area called “The Loathsome Mire,” where you’ll have to face your worst fears (aka more Delirium Monsters). Completing the red mirror shard may reward you with a new amulet that already has two instilled notables.

Delirium Rework

It is important to note that map bosses in Delirium are “100% delirious.” This means that they have a substantial amount of HP, and they hit harder.

Completing Delirium Mirrors now has a chance to spawn a Grand Mirror. A Grand Mirror duplicates the existing map boss, so you’ll have to fight a couple of bosses before the mirror is completed. After that is achieved, a new Atlas mechanic called “The Trial of Madness” commences.

The Trial of Madness spreads fog to nearby maps, with each map getting more and more delirious as you go deeper. Killing map monsters and bosses increases the Delirious percentage up to 200%.

Ultimately, you have to venture into a locked Simulacrum, which has now been updated to have reduced encounters from 15 to 7 in Patch 0.5.0. Completing the Simulacrum gives you access to the pinnacle boss named Tangmazu, the Raven Trickster.

Ritual Rework

For the Ritual mechanic, you have the “Rite of the Nameless” storyline. Head west from your starting location on the Atlas to find maps that have Ritual Altars in them. Completing a Ritual Altar for the first time causes a new NPC named “Aoife” to appear. She comes to you in spirit form because, apparently, her body is in the hands of the King in the Mists.

There is a new hub area called “Caer Tarth,” where nearby maps contain Ritual Encounters. Completing the altars inside these maps will cause subsequent Rituals to be more challenging. Defeating monsters will allow you to earn Tribute.

Now, Tribute can be used to spend on the rewards, which are now guaranteed to be unique items and Omens in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients. If you choose not to spend these Tributes, you can offer them to the king by clicking on the aptly named “Offer Tribute to the King” button at the bottom of the UI. Offering enough Tribute will grant you an Audience with the King.

Ritual Rework

After defeating the King in the Mists, he will drop a key called “The Head of the King.” You can use this key inside Caer Tarth, and doing so will initiate the Rite of the Nameless—a new Atlas mechanic in which you pick a series of five maps to complete a single continuous Ritual.

The monsters from each of these maps will reappear in subsequent maps. The final map will have you defeat all five bosses, making it a true epic battle! After completing these maps, you will collect all elements to create a key that gives you access to the new Ritual Pinnacle Boss—the Queen in the Mists.

Challenge League: Runes of Aldur

The Runes of Aldur League is the first-ever “Challenge League” for Path of Exile 2. For those who are not familiar with these, Challenge Leagues provide you with eight league objectives for you to accomplish. Completing these challenges typically rewards you with a full set of cosmetics. True enough, accomplishing all goals set in the Runes of Aldur Challenge League rewards you with the Knight of Aldur armor set. Each piece of the set is awarded to you when you’ve completed two, four, six, and eight challenges.

Knight of Aldur armor set

You will also get a statue that you can put into your hideout for everyone to see.

New Unique Items

Patch 0.5.0 brings 40 new unique items to Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients. The full list has not been revealed yet at the time of writing, though GGG has been kind enough to tease some prior to the release of the new content update.

One of these unique items is the Twisted Empyrean, which is a unique two-handed mace that converts the fire damage that is typical among Mace Skills into cold damage, with new visual effects to reflect this change. It also grants the Starborn Onslaught skill that calls forth a bombardment of cold metallic bolts from the sky when used.

Twisted Empyrean

Some of these unique items are a random drop from defeating enemies. However, some are locked behind the new pinnacle encounters in the Runes of Aldur League, so you might want to try them out for a chance to obtain them yourself.

We at RPGStash are also going to offer some awesome new PoE 2 items at the launch of Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients, so pay us a visit when the league launches soon.

New Runes and Crafting Systems

Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients will introduce a lot of new runes for you to use. After all, this league is called the Runes of Aldur for a reason. According to GGG, you can collect the following runes throughout your journey:

  • Over 60 runes that can be created by destroying a unique item. This creates a rune that gains some of its properties.
  • Over 15 Runic Ward Runes that can be crafted from Remnants, adding or modifying properties related to the new defensive layer, Runic Ward.
  • 13 Mythical Runes that you can craft early in the game. These runes aim to provide significant boosts to level 15 characters onwards.
  • 3 New “Fluxes” that can be crafted from Remnants. These items transform resistance modifiers on your item from one element to another. This is useful if you are already overcapped in one resistance while the rest are still not at 75%.
  • 15 Meta-Crafting Runes that can be created from Remnants. These might be runes intended for endgame crafting.
  • 13 Ancient Runes, which can be unlocked to be crafted by Remnant Encounters after completing Farrow’s Quest in Act 4. These runes grant powerful bonuses to each weapon type in the game.

As you progress through the PoE 2 Runes of Aldur League, you will get better and better recipes to improve your gear. Furthermore, you are going to have access to Verisium Runeforging in Act 1, which adds “Runic Ward” to your gear as an added layer of defense. It also lets you upgrade unique weapons starting in Act 3, giving them stat boosts to make them powerful enough to carry you to the endgame.

Quality of Life Updates

Massive QoL features are present in Patch 0.5.0 as well. Here is a rundown:

  • A new built-in “Build Planner” has been added, which allows you to import files developed by PoE build creators, so you can be guided on what items, skills, and passive tree nodes you should choose.
  • A dedicated Fragment Stash Tab has also been added. This particular stash tab stores various in-game fragments, such as Inscribed Ultimatums, Djinn Baryas, Tablets, and boss fragments, among others.
  • Added a new search function that lets you find certain items on the trade market while in-game, using specific parameters. You no longer need to use third-party addons to do the same thing.
  • You can now skip NPC dialogue scenes by pressing the Esc Key.
  • New accessibility settings have been added that allow you to increase the size of pop-ups.
  • A dedicated hotkey for Sprint has been added. This is unbound by default, which prompts you to bind it to a certain key before use. Because of this, your character can now sprint immediately while the hotkey is held down without having to do a Dodge Roll to do so.
  • Performance and load times for Acts 1 to 3 have been improved.
  • When the “Click-to-Move” control scheme is used, channeling skills will no longer be interrupted while moving.
  • The maximum character limit of search boxes has been increased to 250 characters. This is very useful for those who use “Regex.”
  • The search bar on the Atlas now highlights the appropriate nodes in real time (as you type).

What Should You Do First on Launch Day?

Are you excited for Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients? If so, here are some useful tips for a smooth launch experience:

Pre-Download the Update

Patch 0.5.0, with all the overhauled systems, new items, and quality of life improvements, is expected to be a huge update (in file size). The good news is that you don’t have to wait until 4 PM on May 29 to download the necessary files.

GGG lets you pre-download the files for Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients a day before the launch on May 28 for the standalone client on PC. This will be in the form of a torrent file, which you can find on the game’s official website. Consoles can also pre-download the update, but that is hours before the launch at 4 PM EST.

Choose Your Starter Builds

League Starters is a term often used by the PoE 2 community to refer to builds that can perform well without expensive gear. If you want to delve into Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients on the day of the launch, then here are some recommendations for league starters:

  • Oracle “Plant” Druid: This is a solid league starter that uses Entangle, which is available from the start. This is then enhanced by Thunderstorm—a skill that can easily be triggered via Cast on Critical, with the help of the Oracle’s “Forced Outcome” ascendancy node.
  • Bear Shaman: A tanky build with good AoE clear potential and respectable single-target damage, the Bear Shaman kills enemies quickly with Rampage and Walking Calamity. Since this build does not use energy shield whatsoever, it is safe from the energy shield nerfs in Patch 0.5.0.
  • Ice Shot Deadeye: A build that uses the reliable Ice Shot to deal cold damage (for a chance at freezing enemies), the Ice Shot Deadeye got some new tools to work with. The “Mirage Deadeye,” for example, can now use the channeling skill called “Snipe” to have the mirage fire a charged projectile whenever it’s out on the battlefield.
  • Slam Titan: The Titan ascendancy class performs as well as it did in the previous league, which means that you can use it to get you through the endgame. With the new Runic Ward as an added defensive layer, the Titan is likely hard to kill with some dodging and blocking. Besides that, this build uses powerful slam skills, including Stampede, Earthquake, and Hammer of the Gods.
  • ED Lich: This build uses powerful chaos spells, in the form of Essence Drain and Contagion, to defeat enemies with relative ease. Supplement these with Entangle and Bonestorm to slay bosses more efficiently. If you are looking for a spellcasting build that’s strong during league start, the ED Lich is a top contender.

Wait for Community Feedback

With tons of new items being introduced in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients, you can expect that a handful of them will be priced relatively high, depending on their usefulness.

Before you commit to spending a lot of PoE 2 Divine Orbs, look at forum posts and community threads on Reddit to see if a particular item is worth sinking currency into or not.

Download Your Loot Filters

With the new Runes of Aldur League, you will need a new loot filter for that. Download the latest file from Filterblade or the official forums before Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients launches on May 29, at 4 PM EDT.
