The Summoning skill is honestly underutilized in RS3 but it's something that you shouldn't overlook. Now, if you're having a tough time getting it to the max level, we're here to help.

This guide will assume that you have a pretty good understanding of Runescape's mechanics and items, so it will not extensively cover everything. Please let us know if you want more extensive guides or short-format guides.

Before you read on, make sure to check out our deals on RS gold, items, and services at RPG Stash. You don't have to grind extensively to get stronger in the game!

Most Important Items

In RS3, there are a lot of Items that will actually boost your experience per hour or provide all kinds of benefits when you are training a skill,  here are the most important ones for Summoning:

Shaman's Outfit

Shaman's outfit gives a flat experience boost when worn. You can obtain the set by participating in the mini game Familiarisation. This set is a must to obtain for the long run of Summoning training.

  • Shaman's headdress - 1% EXP Boost
  • Shaman's poncho - 1% EXP Boost
  • Shaman's leggings - 1% EXP Boost
  • Shaman's hand wraps - 1% EXP Boost
  • Shaman's moccasins - 1% EXP Boost
  • Set Bonus - 1% EXP Boost

Wearing the full set will grant you a 6% experience boost while training Summoning. You can also obtain the Shaman's headdress add-on and combine it with the Shaman's headwear to get modified Shaman's headwear. In addition to the experience boosting effect the modified version also provides free daily spirit shards. The daily spirit shards received depends on how many set pieces the player owns. If all pieces are owned you can receive 500 spirit shards for free daily. In addition to this, it also provides a 5% chance of saving a charm.

Summoning Focus

This item is also a must if you want the fastest experience rates in the game. It provides an extra 20% Summoning experience when making pouches at an obelisk. This bonus combines multiplicatively with other experience buffs. You will need 1 focus for each pouch made so it's quite expensive.

1-99 & Beyond Summoning Training

Pouch Making

For this method of training you will need charms, pouches, spirit shards and the required item to craft the pouch of your choice. You can use familiars to increase the efficiency of this process. Also make sure to wear your weight reducing clothing as you will be running from banks to obelisks all the time.

The obelisks that are closest to a bank are:

  • Taverley obelisk
  • Menaphos Merchant district obelisk
  • Amlodd district obelisk in Prifddinas

If you are using the Prifddinas obelisk, you can take advantage of the attuned crystal teleport seed to move around faster.

Which Charms to Use

Charms have tiers from gold to blue, blue charms are the best ones out of all of them but since charms are untradable, you shouldn't be spending them willy nilly. It is recommended that you save blue charms to speedrun the later levels.

You should also be wary of the grand exchange prices and decide on the correct pouch by comparing their experience rates and gold per gp.

The number near the name of the pouches, are the number of pouches needed to get to that level, without any experience boosts.

Portable Deposit Box Trick

The most efficient way to train this skill is via an item called a “portable deposit box”. This item can only be obtained through seasonal events and is untradeable. You can also use other peoples deposit boxes if they allow you to do so.

If you want to do this method it is best done during a double experience event. Also you should only use this method at the highest levels making Geyser Titan pouches.

The base experience rate of this method is 11.7M per hour.

Best in Slot Equipment

  • Shaman's outfit
  • Augmented crystal hatchet with Wise 4 and Mobile perks
  • Spirit onyx
  • Ring of whispers, necklace of shadows and combined catalyst fragment
  • Wisdom aura
  • Summoning cape
  • Torstol Incense sticks
  • Inspire awe relic
  • Summoning focus

How To Do It

  1. Deploy a portable deposit box near the Taverley obelisk or find one that someone else has already deployed.
  2. Withdraw the pouches, shards, charms and 500 of the tertiary item in noted form.
  3. Sell your tertiary items to the shopkeeper named Magestix.
  4. Buy back your items from him, this will un-note those items.
  5. Create your pouches.
  6. Deposit your items using the portable deposit box.
  7. Repeat this process until you use up all your terital items then re-bank and do the same.

Do not sell too many tertial items to the shop as after a while they will despawn.

Doing this method can yield upwards of 15K pouches per hour.

Quests That Reward Summoning XP

Now, other than the methods above, another way to increase Summoning XP and it's by doing some quests in RS3.

Summoning Time In RS3!

Summoning is a lot more important than you think in RS3, especially when you know how to use it right. The best way to complement your Summoning skill is by partnering it with the undead. Check out our RS3 Necromancy leveling guide as well!

FAQs

What's the fastest way to train Summoning in RS3?

The fastest way to train Summoning is by creating the highest-level pouches available in bulk while using XP-boosting methods like Double XP Live and Summoning obelisks.

Speed path overview:

  • 1-16: Dreadfowl / Spirit Wolf pouches.
  • 16-52: Granite Crabs → Bull Ants → Macaws.
  • 52-79: Spirit Terrorbirds → Bloated Leeches → Stranger Plants.
  • 79-99: Geyser Titans, Fire Titans, or Pack Yak pouches.
  • 99-120: Steel / Iron Titans, Ripper Demons, or Nihils.

Always use:

  • Spirit Gems (saves charms).
  • Summoning Focus near Obelisks.
  • Double XP + Bonus XP + Wise Aura.

Fastest XP/hr = Pack Yak → Geyser Titan → Ripper Demon spam at Obelisks with full BXP stack.

How do you get enough charms for Summoning training?

Charms are the biggest bottleneck for Summoning. Here are top sources:

  • Slayer Tasks: Great drop rate from high-level monsters.
  • Familiarisation D&D: Triple charm drops for 40 minutes per week.
  • ED3 Trash Runs: High charm yield from AoE trash mobs.
  • Bossing: God Wars Dungeon, Glacors, and Ripper Demons drop loads.
  • Player-Owned Dungeon: Create charm-heavy monster layouts.

Extra options:

  • Charm Sprites (Hunter activity).
  • Using Charming Imp: Auto-collects and converts charms during combat.

Charm hoarding is key — stock up before big Summoning grinds!

What items and gear boost Summoning XP gains?

Summoning is highly sensitive to gear and consumable boosts. Key items:

  • Summoning Focus: Build near Obelisk for faster pouch creation.
  • Wisdom Aura: +2.5-3% XP/hr.
  • Clan Avatar Buff: +3-6% XP (if in active clan citadel).
  • Bonus XP (BXP): Applies fully to pouch making.
  • Double XP Live: Halves the cost, doubles the gain.
  • Spirit Gems: Save charms during pouch creation.
  • Dungeoneering Scroll of Cleansing: Chance to save a secondary.

Summoning Training Dummies are also useful during DXP events.

What are the best Summoning familiars for combat and skilling?

Training Summoning also gives access to powerful familiars:

Combat:

  • Steel Titan: Best DPS; perfect for bossing and Slayer.
  • Ripper Demon: Highest damage but fragile; great for high-end PvM.
  • Pack Yak: Essential for banking and long Slayer runs.

Skilling:

  • Arctic Bear: +7 Hunter.
  • Lava Titan: +10 Mining.
  • Granite Lobster: +4 Fishing.
  • Beaver / Obsidian Golem: Woodcutting / Mining boosts.
  • Familiar Scrolls: Offer helpful effects like BoB (Beast of Burden) or special boosts.

Using the right familiar enhances training in nearly every skill.

Is there a cheap or Ironman-friendly way to train Summoning?

Yes! While Summoning is expensive with GP + charms + secondaries, there are cheaper methods:

  • Ironman Tips:
    • Gather secondaries while training Herblore, Farming, or Hunting.
    • Use Charming Imp to save inventory space.
    • Combine Familiarisation with Slayer/ED3 to maximize charm gain.
  • Budget Methods:

    • Stick to Bloated Leeches, Spirit Terrorbirds, or Bunyips.
    • Use Green or Crimson charms over Blue/Gold.
    • Save GP with Scroll of Cleansing and Spirit Gems.

Focus on mid-level pouches with easy-to-farm secondaries for the best XP/GP ratio.
