Spirit is by far the most commonly used item in Diablo II and serves many critical functions:

The +2 All Skills on Spirit are the highest available in the off-hand slot outside of class-specific bonuses. This is very useful to most spell casters and also used on the weapon switch in conjunction with Call to Arms on almost every character.

35% Faster Cast Rate is also the highest available from a shield and is often essential for reaching FCR breakpoints. Combined with the massive +55% Faster Hit Recovery, Spirit is the default choice for the vast majority of characters which rely on Teleport to move around.

The supporting stats on Spirit are also excellent (especially the shield version) which provides a lot of resistances, mana and damage mitigation.

Spirit is an extremely affordable Runeword which is accessible very early in the game. Most casters will obtain a Spirit sword as soon as they enter Nightmare difficulty and begin to farm the Countess – this will usually be used until a late-game option such as Heart of the Oak becomes available.

Spirit shields can only be made in the early-game by Paladins who have access to 4-socket shields in Nightmare. Other classes will usually opt for a Monarch shield which drops in Hell Difficulty and has a minimum level requirement of 54.

If you'd rather skip farming you can quickly buy gear at Rpgstash's D2R Store.
