The Warlock is the second class that you will get if you have purchased the Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred expansion, with the first one being the Paladin. Unlike the Paladin, who is a symbol of light and hope in Sanctuary, the Warlock is not afraid to use the forbidden arts if it means that they will be able to defeat the forces of evil, no matter what.

In this article, I will go over what you can expect from the new Warlock class. Let me just say straight away that it is one of the best in terms of dynamic playstyle, given the bevy of skills available to this master of demonology. As always, a Warlock with the best D4 items does not have any problems decimating the forces of evil!

Diablo 4 Warlock: Core Gameplay Style

For those who were not able to watch the recent developer livestream, the Warlock is the first anti-hero class of Diablo 4. Although they defeat the minions of Hell with powerful magic, the Warlock does not care too much if their skills destroy allies or the environment, so long as the job gets done.

Every time the Warlock casts spells, they are like forcing things into existence. Such is the case with some skills, where demons either hit enemies with heavy damage or block them from getting too close for comfort.

The Warlock is a Willpower-based class, which is the second in Diablo 4, next to the Druid. Unlike other classes, however, the Warlock has a couple of different resources at their disposal: Wrath and Dominance.

Wrath is utilized when casting destructive spells like Bombardment, while Dominance is what the Warlock needs to bring demons into the battlefield.

For instance, the Wall of Agony is a skill that allows the Warlock to summon a wall of demons that not only blocks movement, but also hits enemies that come too close. The Warlock also has the ability to control various demons, but not in a way similar to their D2R counterparts.

Instead of binding an enemy demon to do their bidding, the Warlock summons demons from another dimension (like Profane Sentinel), and then has them attack enemies at will for a limited time.

According to the developers, the Warlock’s abilities are meant to be used in a combo, as "nothing exists in isolation" when the class was conceptualized and created. This is basically the devs saying that playing the Warlock in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred is never a boring experience!

Diablo 4 Warlock Class Mechanic: Soul Shards

Warlocks in Diablo 4 are only able to summon mostly temporary minions. This is in stark contrast to D2R, where Warlocks can bind demons and have them function as allies that last indefinitely.

However, things change whenever you choose a Primary Soul Shard because a powerful demon will be permanently tied to you, unless you choose another soul shard for your particular D4 build.

Having said that, there are four different Primary Soul Shards you need to know about, namely:

• Legion: Ae’grom
• Vanguard: Abodian
• Mastermind: Laalish
• Ritualist: Vollach

Legion is a Primary Soul Shard that allows the Warlock to summon demons and use them in whatever means necessary just to defeat the enemy. This is best used by those who love the minion playstyle, a minion commander that controls hordes of temporary demons to do the dirty work.

Every demon that dies under Ae’Grom’s watch will actually amplify subsequent demons, essentially generating a resource that allows for this to occur.

Vanguard is best used by those who want to go into the frontlines instead of relying on numerous demons to do the killing. When choosing the Vanguard, you’ll be able to ride the fiery steed Abodian to easily close the gap between you and the enemy. This is likely going to be the Primary Soul Shard of choice by many speedfarmers, though how effective Vanguard really is remains to be seen.

Mastermind lets you command the greater demon, Laalish, all while being hidden (well, most of the time). This Primary Soul Shard is mainly for those who want to be a spellcaster with a reliable demon waiting at their command.

When choosing the soul shard fragment, Unfathomable, Laalish weakens enemies and executes them immediately when their life goes below a certain point. Executing enemies reduces the cooldown of "Command Laalish," thus shortening its downtime.

Unlike the other Primary Soul Shards, which let you command demons when fighting enemies, the Ritualist Soul Shard is different in that you only gain more power from it by siphoning its lifeforce.

When selecting the Ritualist Soul Shard, you gain access to Vollach, the Fallen One. Siphoning its lifeforce grants a stack of Overpower, allowing Occult Abyss and Occult Hellfire skills to apply Hex and Grant Volatility, respectively. The Ritualist Soul Shard is best used by those who want to maximize the Warlock’s destructive spells over commanding demons.

Now, there are a couple of important things to note about the Warlock’s class mechanic in Diablo 4. First, each Primary Soul Shard has two distinct features—a distinct passive skill that transforms the Warlock’s playstyle, and a demon that is specifically tied to the shard’s identity.

Second, every Primary Soul Shard comes with three fragment sub-options, though you’ll only be able to use one. Treat the fragments as specializations for the Primary Soul Shard you have chosen.

Here is a brief explainer of each one:

Legion Fragment Bonuses

• Spawn: Ae’grom gains the ability to spawn a Vile Child Demon periodically. Using the "Command Ae’grom" skill no longer prompts Ae’grom to spew Vile Children and instead causes Lesser Demons to explode on impact, dealing damage.
• Sacrificial: Gain the "Unstoppable" status when you have Lesser Demons active.
• Evisceration: Your summoned demons prioritize hitting enemies that are eviscerated.

Vanguard Fragment Bonuses

• Hellguard: Abodian cleaves enemies with every swipe. It also gains increased cast speed and movement speed.
• Warden: While in Demonform, you lose Dominance (resource) per second in exchange for longer durations of your Greater Demons. Warden also increases the damage of Hellfire Demonology skills while in Demonform.
• Inferno: Causes you to emanate fire when you are affected by "Volatile" while in Demonform. This causes you to deal damage to nearby enemies.

Mastermind Fragment Bonuses

• Unfathomable: Laalish weakens enemies and deals increased damage against them. Any monster executed by Laalish reduces the cooldown of "Command Laalish."
• Blasphemous: Recast Skills (like Profane Sentinel) hex enemies on hit and increase the damage they take from your Abyss Demonology skills.
• Subjugation: Summoning any Abyss Great Demon (not tied to a soul shard like Fiend of Abaddon and Tyrant’s Grasp) consumes all Dominance (resource), increasing their damage based on the amount of Dominance that was consumed.

Ritualist Fragment Bonuses

• Abyssal: Hex stacks on enemies up to 4 times, 100% of the damage dealt to the target echoes after 4 seconds. After that, all stacks of Hex are removed from the target.
• Twisted: Skills consume 1 stack of Hex on targets hit to increase its damage against the target by 25%. The Twisted Fragment also grants 1 stack of Overpower for every 50 Wrath spent on casting skills.
• Scorching: Occult Hellfire skills (like Hell Fracture and Sigil of Chaos) are always empowered and consume 4% of your maximum life every time they are cast. Command Vollach also siphons its life to Fortify you for 8% of your maximum HP, and causes Vollach to pay 100% of life costs instead while you’ve siphoned its power.
