What is a Rune Pouch?

Rune pouch is the most important magic upgrade you can get for your account. Although it doesn't have any magic bonus nor can you even equip it on your character, it is still a must-have upgrade every player needs. Any magic-related activity you might want to do requires runes, which is the basic logic behind spellcasting on OSRS. Depending on the spell you want to cast you will need to have 2-4 different types of runes, and depending on the combination of different spells you want to cast you might even need 5 or 6 different types of runes at a given time. Each type of rune takes one of your limited inventory spaces and since you have only 28 inventory spaces each one of them are extremely precious.

This is where the rune pouch comes in! You can use a rune pouch to store 3 types of runes in the same inventory slot (4 if you have the upgrade) which allows you to manage your inventory better and have more space for food or loot. Here are some examples that require you to have a rune pouch depending on the method you choose:

  • Zilyana
  • Tormented Demons
  • Abyssal Demons

Grand Exchange

If you are playing on a regular account and you have cash to spare, this is the easiest method to get one. Although the rune pouch is an untradable item, it has a tradable variant called the "rune pouch note". This note is an exchange ticket of sorts that gives you the regular rune pouch once exchanged with a banker npc. Currently buying a rune pouch note costs around 4.5M but it is worth it!

Last Man Standing

If you are an Ironman account, the fastest way to get a hold of one of these pouches will be the Last Man Standing, that is if you have the PVP skill for it. Last Man Standing is a PVP minigame that puts 23 players against one another in a free-for-all deathmatch. As you kill other players you collect points, you also get points by ranking in the top 3 of the game. Once the game is completed you can use those points on the rewards shop to buy a variety of different rewards, which are especially useful for Ironman accounts.

The reason why this method is arguably the best is the fact that you don't need any pre-requisite stats or gear, the minigame provides you with both of those. You just need to be decent at PVP to gain an incredible amount of points really fast. If you are not good at PVP you can also hide inside the map and try to survive for as long as you can to get the placement points. Once you reach 75 Last Man Standing points you can purchase your rune pouch! It comes in its note form so exchange it via a banker to get the real deal. If you require more knowledge on this mini-game, we have a quick guide on it that teaches the basic mechanics of the game for you to start gathering points!

Slayer

Another way to purchase this item is via the Slayer rewards shop. This method is the way to go if you are an Ironman with no PVP experience. This is a sure way of getting your hands on one but this method takes a long time, and you might also get sad spending all of those hard-earned slayer points on a rune pouch.

The method is simple. Start doing a bunch of Slayer tasks and gather a total of 750 points from those tasks to get your rune pouch. If you are going to do this, being as high level as possible will be a huge help. You should always use the Slayer masters that give the highest amount of slayer points as well. The best one to use for this is Krystilia which gives 25 points per task so it will not take you that long to get your pouch unless you spend the points on something else. Krystilia is also the riskiest slayer master out of them all since she only assigns Wilderness tasks so you might even get killed by other players in the process of gathering points.

If you don't want to deal with Wilderness Slayer, your next best option would be Konar. Konar gives 18 points per task which can go up to 20 if you have the elite Kourend & Kebos Diary completed. Konar also assigns location-specific tasks so, she can assign some pretty annoying tasks that might be better off skipping.

Upgrading Rune Pouch

Rune pouch by itself is already amazing enough, it holds 3 types of runes in it and is pretty easy to get but it also has an upgrade which allows it to hold 4 types of runes instead of 3! Upgrading the pouch requires the thread of Elidnis. Thread of Elidnis is an untradable item that can only be obtained from the Tombs of Amascut raid. Don't let that scare you, because the drop rate of this item is extremely common being a 1 in 10 and as you do more raids it goes up to 3 in 10. After you receive this item, you can use it on your rune pouch to upgrade it, this process requires level 75 Crafting. Don't get lazy and settle down with the regular variant as this is one of the best magic upgrades you can get in Old School Runescape.

PVP and Death Mechanics

Let's talk a bit about how not to lose this pouch once you obtain it. If you ever die in a PVM scenario you should be fine but if you ever die in a PVP scenario your rune pouch will actually get destroyed. Don't worry there are two ways to prevent this.

  1. You can use blighted spell sacks in both the PVP worlds and inside the Wilderness. Although they don't cover all spells, they are pretty good at taking care of your necessities.
  2. If you need to bring out your rune pouch get a trouver parchment. If you are a regular account you can buy it off the grand exchange for around 1M. If you are an Ironman you can get it from the Last Man Standing Shop for 18 points or as a Wilderness drop from any monster inside the Wilderness Slayer Cave. Once you obtain this parchment, you can make your way over to Perdu in Edgeville which will use the item and lock your untradable. This way when you die you will not lose your untradable and instead lose the locked status.

Do keep in mind that even if you protect your rune pouch in a PVP death scenario, you will still lose all your runes inside the pouch so never bring all of your runes to PVP.
