The brand new skill of Old School Runescape is unlike any we have ever seen. It houses a unique list of rewards and progression perks that no other skill in the game has. From money-making to more navigation options, Sailing completely changes the progression path of any player. In this guide, we will take a look at everything you can unlock through progressing your Sailing skill.
Sailing can become a challenging and boring grind. Especially the early game of Sailing is notoriously slow and annoying to get through. If you don’t want to grind these annoying parts yourself and just want to enjoy the content it unlocks, consider using our Sailing Services, where our professionals will take care of any Sailing-related need you have.
Ship Upgrades & Travelling

We can’t talk about sailing without talking about ships. Ships are the main reward of Sailing; they are the main progression path. As you level up your Sailing, you will be able to build better, faster, stronger ships that house a variety of facilities that you can take advantage of.
As you upgrade your ship, you will have access to more of OSRS’s oceans and the content they have. These contents that are locked behind your ship tier are essential, as they provide all sorts of new training methods for already existing skills and new money-making methods. You can check out our Sailing Money Making Guide to learn all about the best new methods. There are also perks that you can add to your ship to provide benefits while you are Sailing. These perks come in the form of drinks that you can put in your keg. These drinks provide the following benefits:
- Kraken ink stout: Increases the likelihood of ocean encounters by 4%.
- Perildance bitter: Increases the max hit of cannons by 1.
- Trawler’s trust: Grants 5% chance of catching extra fish while deep-sea trawling.
- Horizon’s lure: Boosts Sailing experience by 2.5%.
- Whirlpool surprise: Grants an invisible +2 Sailing boost, and gives the crew a minimum of 2 deckhandiness and 2 helmsmanship.
Your ship will also become much faster, allowing you to travel between locations quickly. Travelling is a core part of account progression for every player. Every player knows the difference between having teleports to cities and having to walk to them. Well, in Sailing, you have a different way of travelling to all the locations you have unlocked throughout your journey, and in addition to that, you can build a greater teleport focus on your ship to teleport to it. This essentially allows you to create your own teleport location on any mooring point. You can have ships with just this facility on and leave them at spots that are hard to travel to for faster access.
On the topic of ship facilities, there are a ton of them that will help you greatly throughout your Sailing journey. We have a full guide on how you should go about upgrading your ship throughout your Sailing journey on our blog, called OSRS Ships Guide. As you level up more and more, you will be able to recruit better crewmates, which will help you use your ship and do Sailing activities much more easily and efficiently.
Deep Sea Trawling

Deep-sea trawling is the OSRS’s latest fishing training method. The main difference between this and regular fishing is the loot. Deep-sea trawling offers less fishing experience but more fish per hour, combined with the fact that the new fish are much superior to the old ones make this a decent fishing money-making method! You can catch the following fish with deep-sea trawling:
- Raw giant krill - Level 69 fishing
- Raw haddock - Level 73 fishing
- Raw yellowfin - Level 79 fishing
- Raw halibut - Level 83 fishing
- Raw bluefin - Level 87 fishing
- Raw marlin - Level 91 fishing
You can cut these into fish parts and use them for catching more fish or brewing potions, or you can cook them to get their added benefits. Whatever you do, deep-sea trawling is a great addition to regular fishing. If you like to learn more about this activity and all its nuances, you can check out our Deep Sea Trawling Guide!
Sea Monsters

One of the main attractions of Sailing is its sea combat. It is in a barebones state at the moment, but there is no doubt that there will be major additions to this part of Sailing over time. There are currently 20 sea creatures that players can hunt. All of these creatures have unique drop tables, and the high-level ones drop pretty expensive items, such as the bottled storm or dragon salvaging hook. Having better upgraded ships will allow you to traverse the waters that these creatures reside in and slay them for their loot and experience. We have a full guide on Ship Combat if you would like to learn all about the mechanics of this aspect of the game.
Shipwreck Salvaging
This is the equivalent of chopping high-level trees for Sailing. You can AFK for long periods of time while getting Sailing experience and loot. Salvaging is the activity that the players enjoy the most with Sailing, and it can provide some decent rewards, such as alchable items, herbs, seeds, and most notably the dragon cannon barrel, which every player needs if they want to upgrade their ship's combat capabilities to the maximum.
As you level up, your Sailing and upgrade your ship; this activity becomes better and better and blends into your daily OSRS routine. It is also a great activity to do while you are working. There are 8 shipwrecks in total for you to salvage from:
- Small shipwreck - Requires level 15 Sailing
- Fisherman’s shipwreck - Requires level 26 Sailing
- Barracuda shipwreck - Requires level 35 Sailing
- Large shipwreck - Requires level 53 Sailing
- Pirate shipwreck - Requires level 64 Sailing
- Mercenary shipwreck - Requires level 73 Sailing
- Fremennik shipwreck - Requires level 80 Sailing
- Merchant shipwreck - Requires level 87 Sailing
If you want a detailed shipwreck salvaging guide to learn all about how you can take advantage of this activity, check out our Shipwreck Salvaging guide, where we cover every little detail about this activity.
Islands

With everything mentioned above, the islands that players unlock with Sailing are the main reward and benefit of this skill, and it will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. With the release of Sailing, there are 27 newly added islands that players can unlock and travel to; each of these islands provides unique benefits and training locations, and unlike the mainland, where players can access most locations from the get-go, these locations are locked behind level requirements, making them less contested.
There are no better rewards in this game than this, since whenever you unlock an island, you can access it permanently and take advantage of its benefits. Here is the list of islands that provide great benefits for the player:
Woodcutting

There are 4 newly added trees, which are great both for money making and woodcutting experience.
The Great Conch
Has the new jatoba and camphor tree growing on it alongside teak, mahogany and yew trees. This island is perfect for any woodcutter looking to make some decent gold. This island requires level 45 Sailing and the completion of the “Troubled Tortugans” quest to fully access.
Sunbleak Island
Sunbleak Island is another great one. Requiring level 72 Sailing to access, this Island has Ironwood trees growing on it and right next to a bank chest at that (you have to build the bank chest). Being a tier 80 tree, you can chop this tree AFK for around 4 minutes with decent experience rates.
Lledrith Island
Requiring level 66 Sailing, this island houses 8 magic trees for any magic tree enjoyer.
Drumstick Island
This island unlocks at level 79 Sailing and houses the highest level tree in the game currently, the rosewood tree. This tree requires level 92 Woodcutting to chop and is used for building the highest-tier ships in the game.
Fishing

The Great Conch
This island has 4 different fishing spots for big net, harpoon, lure, and bait fishing. If you want a change in scenery from your usual fishing spots, you can try these.
Anglers' Retreat
The name angler is always found near fish, as this island has a bignet/harpoon, and cage/harpoon fishing spots. This island unlocks at level 51 Sailing.
Buccaneers’ Haven
This island has the brand new lantern harpooning fishing spots, right next to a bank as well, which makes it a prime location to catch those new squids for their beaks. This island unlocks at level 76 Sailing.
Laguna Aurorae
A huge island with a spirit tree for easy access makes this place a perfect spot for fishing. The fishing spots on this island have squids, sharks, and big net fish. This island unlocks at level 58 Sailing.
The Onyx Crest
Unlocks at level 47 Sailing, this island is another good one for lanter harpoon fishing since you can build a bank chest on it.
Hunter
The Great Conch
This island truly has everything, as it houses 5 different hunter creatures for you to farm, the most notable two being the red chinchompas and orange salamanders.
Chinchompa Island
As the name suggests, this island houses a new red chinchompa hunting spot, and it only requires level 42 Sailing to access.
The Crown Jewel

Unlocks at level 64 Sailing, this island houses the newly added rainbow crabs, which can be used to brew armadyl brews.
Mining

The Great Conch
There are 8 different ores on the Great Conch, but the most notable one is the granite.
Deepfin Point
This island, which unlocks at level 67 Sailing, is an island made specifically for mining. It has ores both on the surface of the island and in its dungeon. There are multiple bank chest spots you can use to bank your ore easily, and the most notable ores on the island are: adamant, nickel, lead, and runite.
Grimstone
Requiring level 87 Sailing, this island houses several runite and nickel ores.
Combat
The Great Conch
New gryphons and shellbane gryphons can be found here.
Charred Island
Requires level 60 Sailing. This Island has a new Slayer dungeon in it. Most notably, it has hellhounds, nechryaels and laval strykewyrms in it.
Ynysdail
Requiring level 73 Sailing, this island houses the newly added Aquanites.
Grimstone
Requiring level 87 Sailing, this island has the brand new frost dragons in it.
We are working on an OSRS Island Tier list, which will be available on our blog later this week, where we will go into detail on every island, what they offer and how important they are for players.
