Shipwreck Salvaging is a new Sailing activity in Old School RuneScape that allows players to scour the seas for sunken wrecks, plundering their remains for experience and loot. It is considered one of the best AFK training methods for Sailing, offering steady XP and useful items with minimal effort. This guide will cover shipwreck locations with map references, efficient salvaging techniques, and tips to maximize experience gains, profits, and collection log progress.

If you want to skip the grinding, check out our Sailing Services for fast, secure Sailing assistance.

How to Salvage Efficiently

Shipwreck Salvaging Guide

Before diving into individual shipwreck locations, it’s important to understand how to salvage efficiently. Multiple factors will impact your XP rates and loot per hour.

Ship Upgrades

Upgrading your ship with the latest equipment and facilities significantly increases your experience and loot per hour. Key upgrades include:

Purchasing a Sloop

Unlocked at level 50 Sailing, the Sloop is a top priority. Installing two salvaging hooks and having a crewmate to assist with salvaging greatly increases XP and loot per hour.

Salvaging Station

Available at level 42 Sailing and 34 Construction, the salvaging station allows players to sort salvage directly on the ship, removing the need to return to a dock. Sorting salvages grants both loot and Sailing experience, making this a must-have upgrade.

To build the station, first recover and read its schematics. Go near the Pandemonium Caves entrance and dig between the two trees east of the cave entrance to obtain a key.

Salvaging Station Key Location

With the key, travel to the chest on Chinchompa Island and open it to retrieve the schematics.

Crystal Extractor, Cargo Hold & Salvaging Hooks

Additional upgrades to boost your salvaging efficiency include:

  1. The Crystal Extractor, which grants 250 Sailing XP per minute when harvested.
  2. Cargo Hold upgrades, increasing the amount of salvage that can be stored and allowing for longer AFK sessions.
  3. Salvaging Hook upgrades, which improve the chance of extracting salvages. Always use the best hook available for your level.

Crewmates

Crewmates can be assigned to salvaging hooks to automatically extract salvages and deposit them into your cargo hold. They are essential for maximizing experience rates and achieving the best AFK efficiency. Each crewmate has three stats: Helmnsmanship, Privateering, and Deckhandiness. For shipwreck salvaging, Deckhandiness is the most important stat, as it improves their salvaging efficiency, grants more experience to the player, and determines which salvaging hooks they can operate.

DeckhandinessSalvaging HooksSalvaging Experience
1Up to Steel hooks10%
2Up to Adamant hooks20%
3Up to Rune hooks30%
4Up to Dragon hooks40%

The two most useful NPCs for shipwreck salvaging are:

  • Cabin Boy Jenkins: Deckhandiness 4. Unlocks at level 60 Sailing after completing Dragon Slayer 1. Requires a Ghostspeak amulet or Morytania legs 2+ to talk. Found on Crandor.
  • Jolly Jim: Deckhandiness 4. Unlocks at level 85 Sailing. Found in Brimhaven.

Ship Positioning

Positioning your ship correctly is essential for maximizing loot. Always ensure that the salvaging hook your crewmate uses is directly facing the shipwreck; otherwise, they may be unable to salvage. Double-ship spawns should be utilized by parking your ship between the two locations to increase AFK time and loot yield.

Tick Manipulation

You can increase salvaging efficiency by performing tick manipulation. Click one salvage, then immediately click the other. Monitor the rope on the salvaging hook—when nearly fully extended, click back on the first salvage and repeat. This reduces the salvage interval from 4 ticks to 2 ticks and may allow double loot rolls.

If using a single salvaging hook, either on a skiff or with a crewmate, equip a celastrus bark with a knife (teak log with knife also works). Click the bark, then one tile away from the hook, then click the hook. As soon as your character drops, click the bark again to step back, then click the hook. Repeat this sequence for maximum efficiency.

The Most Efficient Sloop Setup

For salvaging shipwrecks with two crewmates, the most efficient sloop setup includes:

  • Best cargo hold available
  • Best salvaging hook (Dragon hook recommended)
  • Keg of Whirlpool Surprise
  • Keg of Horizon’s Lure
  • Teleport Focus
  • Crystal Extractor
  • Salvaging Station
  • Anchor

The Dragon Salvaging Hook is currently the most efficient hook in the game. Each hook costs around 45M gold to build on your ship, which is expensive but worth the investment. If you need gold for these upgrades, visit our OSRS Store for fast and secure gold deliveries.
