Overview of the PoE 2 Last of the Druids Expansion
Patch 0.4.0 is one of the most impactful updates for Path of Exile 2 since it launched in Early Access last year. The main highlight of the Last of the Druids expansion is the highly ancipated hybrid class, the Druid.
This shapeshifting class is the first of its kind in Path of Exile 2. Able to weave human and animal forms seamlessly, the Druid can cast nature magic and transform into a Werewolf and Bear to obliterate his enemies.
A new league will also come with the game’s latest expansion. Travel back to the past and stop the Vaal from ever triggering the cataclysm that shook Wraeclast to its core in the present day. Fans of the original game will love the familiar systems that are going to be implemented in the Fate of the Vaal league. We’ll explore these new features in the later sections of this article, so do read it to completion.
New Gameplay Features Introduced
There are three major features that you can expect in Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids. Let’s begin with the much-awaited Druid Class, shall we?
PoE 2 New Class in Patch 0.4.0: The Druid

Path of Exile 2 has celebrated its anniversary, and although it is still in Early Access, GGG has already implemented a lot of amazing features. This coming December 12, the Druid is coming as part of Patch 0.4.0! Finally, those who are waiting for the game’s resident shapeshifter need not wait any longer!

Bear Form
The Druid is the first hybrid class in Path of Exile 2 that is proficient in both might and magic. This STR-INT hybrid can seamlessly switch between human and animal forms, which is why it took GGG quite some time to release.
In terms of the weapon, the Druid utilizes an Animal Talisman, which is a two-handed melee weapon that allows you to shapeshift into his different animal forms. If you want to turn back into a human, simply cast any spell. The process should be seamless, according to the developers.

Certain types of Talismans that the Druid can use have dedicated icons that tell you which form you can shapeshift into. Besides that, you will be given certain skills that would allow you to change into these forms immediately, such as Maul (for the Bear) and Pounce (for the Werewolf). Here is an example:

According to the devs, the ideal way to play the Druid is to utilize his melee and magical capabilities. For example, you can cast Volcano to summon a small crater that spews fiery projectiles onto nearby enemies. Then, you can switch immediately into Bear Form and maul enemies while the volcano is doing its thing.
Additionally, you can use a slam skill on the crater itself, and it will continue unleashing more fire-based projectiles as a result.

During Bear Form, you can generate Rage—a special type of resource that provides a “more” damage boost (more means multiplicative bonuses in PoE 2) while attacking enemies. The more Rage you have, the shinier the rune on the Druid’s back becomes. This signifies that your next slam gets empowered, dealing more damage.
What’s interesting about this Rage mechanic on the Druid is that he can unleash devastating versions of his skills. This even synergizes with certain spells like Volcano to make it unleash Hell the more times you stomp on it with Rampage.

If the Bear Form specializes in dealing huge amounts of damage at the cost of slow attack speed, then the Werewolf Form is the more “speedy” one.

The Werewolf has a special mark skill that puts a mark on the enemy. After that, the enemy is killed, a wolf minion will spawn to fight by your side. It seems that the Werewolf’s damage might not be enough, which is why the wolf companions can change the tide of battle.
There is even a skill called “Cross Slash” that allows you to mark an enemy and make that mark explode, causing wolf minions to be summoned in the process. This is quite useful during lengthy boss fights, where the additional wolves can help deal with the situation.

When you are in Werewolf Form, you also gain a special ability that allows you to transform into an Arctic Werewolf. In this form, you’ll be able to deal more damage with your abilities and move much more quickly. This is great if you just want to become a Werewolf for its more versatile combat prowess.

Prior to the reveal trailer, GGG had already teased what the Druid can do. Not only can he change into a formidable bear, but he can also unleash quick and deadly swipes at the enemy in Werewolf Form.
However, the community is actually surprised that the Druid has a third form, and that is none other than the Wyvern!

The Wyvern uses its wings to swipe at enemies in a frontal cone. This alone allows the Wyvern to make quick work of the enemy, since its attacks are relatively balanced (not too fast, not too slow). Additionally, the Wyvern can use its wings to “clap” and destroy enemies that are on the brink of death.

Just like a fearsome dragon, the Wyvern can devour an enemy, generating Power Charges as a result. When the Wyvern has Power Charges, its attacks are infused with lightning, dealing more damage, and it has the ability to “Shock” enemies. Its melee swipes also become noticeably bigger, so devouring enemies from time to time certainly is a viable strategy.

Of course, the developers don’t want to miss the opportunity to introduce the mighty Flame Breath! Using this skill prompts the Wyvern to fly and unleash its deadly fire breath onto its foes!

Just like the Huntress when she was first introduced, the Druid has two ascendancy classes as well. In Patch 0.4.0, you’ll be able to choose between the Shaman and the Oracle.

The Shaman embraces the Druid’s ability to beat enemies to death with his animal forms, as well as harnessing nature magic to do the same thing. For example, “Druidic Champion” is an ascendancy node that grants 1% more spell damage for every two points of Rage. To maximize this, you will switch between human and animal forms consistently, with the former casting nature magic and the latter generating Rage.
On top of that, the Shaman has “Wisdom of the Maji.” This ascendancy node is the first of its kind. When allocated, all runes in PoE 2 will gain additional bonuses. For instance, a Greater Iron Rune will provide a 14% increased effect of fully broken armor when inserted into martial weapons.

The Oracle, on the other hand, has a unique skill set never before seen in Path of Exile 2. When you allocate “The Unseen Path,” you will see a bunch more passive nodes near the Druid’s starting point on the Passive Tree.

Self-Sacrificing is one of those passive nodes that you could only access with the Oracle. This notable passive skill reduces the spirit reservation efficiency of your other skills, like Combat Frenzy or Grim Feast, but in exchange, you get a considerable boost in minion spirit reservation efficiency. What does this mean, you ask? Well, this enables you to summon more minions, making the Oracle a suitable minion master if you really want him to.

The Druid ascendancy classes are looking pretty awesome. Beginners would probably lean more towards the Shaman because he is able to enhance the Druid’s capabilities manifold. The Oracle is more suited for PoE 2 veterans, since some theorycrafting is needed to be able to maximize the “hidden” nodes available to the said ascendancy class.
Welcome the Vaal
With every new PoE 2 expansion, there comes a new league along with it. This time, the new league is called The Fate of the Vaal.

During the campaign, you will come across Vaal Beacons that are always riddled with monsters. Defeating these enemies will activate the beacon. However, since they are a bit old, clearing only one pack of monsters will not suffice. Hence, you have to find several of these on the map to activate the main Vaal Beacon.

Once the beacon is activated, it will open up a portal to the Vaal Ruins. This is the home of Atziri, who is the pinnacle boss in the Fate of the Vaal League. If you have played the original game before, this is basically Incursion 2.0, albeit a bit more complex and more rewarding at the same time.

When you arrive at the Vaal Ruins, you will come across a Temple Console. Interact with it to see the blueprint of the Vaal Temple. Atziri’s is located at the opposite end of the entrance.

Although this may seem so complicated, the concept here is actually simple. Basically, you just need to create paths that will lead you to the edge of the temple, where Atziri, Queen of the Vaal, awaits.
Every time you run the temple, you will be able to place down six paths and structures of your choosing. This means that you’ll have to complete the temple a few times to face the aforementioned pinnacle boss.

While you can just place any structure that you want, there is some strategy involved if you want to maximize the rewards you’re going to get. The Commander’s Chamber can be placed anywhere as you please.
However, when you put it right next to a garrison, the Commander has an army it can use at its disposal, making the temple even more difficult. Defeating the Commander in this scenario gives you much better rewards than just placing the Commander’s Chamber into an adjacent node without a connecting structure that makes sense.

Once you have placed the paths and structures accordingly, you can run the temple based on your configuration. Simply defeat the enemies you come across until the end of your current Temple Console configuration to end the run.
Continue to populate the temple until you reach the end. This may take three to four runs before you can come up with a full temple. Hopefully, the content is more challenging and rewarding at the same time.

After placing the Royal Access Chamber in the past, you will be able to teleport directly to Atziri’s Chamber. Here, you will face the queen of the Vaal herself. Take note that this is a pinnacle boss encounter, so you’d better come prepared with the best gear possible. Otherwise, Atziri will make quick work of you!

Abyss Goes Core
That’s right! Even though the previous expansion is about to end, Abyss is going to stay, though with some changes.
First, Abyss no longer appears during the campaign. It will only be present on the Atlas, specifically on certain map nodes.
Second, since it is now part of PoE 2’s endgame, you can influence some map nodes to have the Abyss content by using the new Abyss Precursor Tablets.

Third, you can improve the Abyss by allocating points on the Atlas Tree. For instance, “Sprawling Rupture” effectively increases the monster density of the Abyss mechanic by 25%, making it a solid pick for your first couple of points.

Rare Precursor Tablets
GGG has done away with instilling and throwing your Waystones into the Well of Souls to “juice it up” and make them more challenging. Instead, the company changes Precursor Tablets once; this time, by allowing you to upgrade it from Magic Rarity to Rare using Regal Orbs, Exalted Orbs, or Orbs of Alchemy.

The reason why GGG made this decision is that juicing up your Waystones by using Delirium and Abyss mechanics is just too much of a chore. Rare Precursor Tablets solve this issue by providing the bonuses directly to the Waystones you are going to run.
In addition, the developers said that they will no longer add any juicing mechanic that forces you to use different types of currency in the future. This is basically to streamline the process of mapping in the endgame, which is something that you will do for the most part when playing Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids.

However, they made one more addition—a new item called the Ancient Infuser.

The Ancient Infuser only has one goal: to corrupt your Precursor Tablets. If you are a PoE 2 beginner, corrupting items may lead to additional modifiers or effects that are otherwise not possible through normal means.
Since you can effectively corrupt tablets now, you can run juiced maps just by adding a Precursor Tablet!

Performance Optimizations
Although Path of Exile 2 has plenty of things that you can do, there is one lingering problem that needs to be addressed: performance drops. Even on top-of-the-line PCs, you may notice significant slowdowns during intense gameplay.
In Patch 0.4.0, the developers aim to resolve this with under-the-hood optimizations. While specifics were not disclosed, you can expect at least a 25% performance improvement over the previous expansion.
It doesn’t stop there! Further performance enhancements are planned for future updates. If you left the game due to poor optimization, now may be the perfect time to return to Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids.
Class Changes and Build Impacts in PoE 2 Last of the Druids
If you are a fan of the Spark Blood Mage build, Patch 0.4.0 introduces significant nerfs. Atalui’s Bloodletting, a key lineage support gem for this build, has been heavily nerfed.
Now it grants 2% extra physical damage per 20 life cost, reducing overall damage compared to its previous 10 HP per 2% calculation. Additionally, Atalui’s Bloodletting no longer has a 150% cost multiplier, previously factored into the supported skill’s damage.
The extra 2% physical damage is now capped at 40%, further limiting the gem’s effectiveness.
Ritualist Builds are also affected. Rigwald’s Ferocity, another lineage support gem used for mobility, now grants only 30% increased attack speed instead of 20% more attack speed. This nerf significantly reduces the speed of skills like Tempest Flurry across the map.
In PoE 2, “increased” modifiers are additive, while “more” modifiers are multiplicative, amplifying effects. With Rigwald’s Ferocity nerf, fast-attacking mobility is curtailed until further updates.
Fortunately, Patch 0.4.0 also brings notable buffs:
- The Smith of Kitava: immunity to damaging ailments from Heatproofing (previously just Ignite), no mana cost and increased damage for Temper Weapon, and “Internal Layer” now reduces critical damage by 100% (up from 50%).
- Pathfinder: can now allocate passive skills near the Warrior and Sorceress starting points via the new ascendancy node “Path Seeker.”
- Titan: “Crushing Impact” now deals 25% more damage against heavy-stunned enemies and facilitates heavy-stunning.
- Stormweaver: “Storm’s Recollection” node allows you to collect remnants from 50% farther away, aiding elemental infusion strategies.
- Tactician: “Strategic Embankments” node improves Artillery Ballista skill speed by 20%, grants 25% more Siege Ballista damage, and adds 25% extra fire damage to Mortar Cannon.
Performance Optimizations
Although Path of Exile 2 has plenty of things that you can do, there is one lingering problem that needs to be addressed, and that is the issue with performance. Even when you are playing on a PC with the top-of-the-line specs, you will still see the performance drop significantly whenever something big is happening on the screen.
In Patch 0.4.0, the developers are hoping to solve that issue by doing some under-the-hood changes. They did not disclose the specifics about what they did, but you can expect at least a 25% improvement in performance compared to the previous expansion.
It doesn’t stop there! The developers are going to implement more performance optimizations in future updates. So, if you quit the game back then because of poor optimization, maybe it’s time for you to get back in Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids!
Class Changes and Build Impacts in PoE 2 Last of the Druids
Are you a fan of the Spark Blood Mage build? If so, you are going to be disheartened with the changes in Patch 0.4.0. Atalui’s Bloodletting, which is a crucial lineage support gem for the said build to work, has been nerfed massively.
For one, it now grants 2% extra physical damage per 20 life cost. This means that the damage dealt by the supported skill has been cut in half, since it now needs 20 HP to give the damage boost instead of 10.
Most importantly, Atalui’s Bloodletting no longer has a cost multiplier. Part of the power that this lineage support gem has is its insane 150% cost multiplier, which factors into the damage calculation of the supported skill (in this case, Spark).
As if that’s not bad enough, the 2% extra physical damage now has a ceiling of 40%. This was not present in the previous major update, effectively gutting this support gem’s power.
It also seems that Ritualist Builds are not going to look fine in Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids. This is because Rigwald’s Ferocity, which is another lineage support gem that is used for mobility purposes while attacking, now only grants 30% increased attack speed, rather than 20% more attack speed.
To give you an idea of why that is an impactful nerf, the word “increased” in PoE 2 means that a modifier is calculated additively with other similar effects. On the other hand, the word “more” preceding a modifier means that it is a multiplicative bonus, essentially amplifying the effect significantly.
With the nerf to Rigwald’s Ferocity, you can no longer use Tempest Flurry or other fast-attacking skills to move around the map at a crazy pace. Maybe GGG will bring this speed back in future updates, but as of now, you’ll just have to deal with the adjustment.
If you think that Patch 0.4.0 is all doom and gloom, fortunately, it is not. Here is a quick rundown of some notable buffs:
- The Smith of Kitava received notable improvements, such as immunity to damaging ailments from Heatproofing (instead of just Ignite), no mana cost and increased damage for the Temper Weapon skill, the “Internal Layer” from Smith’s Masterwork now makes you take reduced critical damage by 100% (up from 50%).
- The Pathfinder can now allocate passive skills near the Warrior and Sorceress starting points on the passive tree, thanks to the new ascendancy node called the “Path Seeker.”
- The Titan’s “Crushing Impact” now lets you deal 25% more damage against heavy-stunned enemies. Crushing Impact itself makes it easier for you to heavy-stun your foes, making it a solid upgrade from the previous expansion.
- The Stormweaver’s “Storm’s Recollection” ascendancy node now also makes you collect remnants from 50% away. This is great if you take advantage of elemental infusions to destroy your enemies.
- The Tactician’s “Strategic Embankments” ascendancy node now improves the skill speed (by 20%) of Artillery Ballista, grants 25% more damage to the Siege Ballista, and provides extra fire damage to the Mortar Cannon (by 25%).
Best Classes to Start The Last of the Druids Expansion
- Amazon: The newly reworked Elemental Surge provides lightning surges to improve your damage and clearing potential. This is probably a resurgence of the Lightning Spear Amazon.
- Smith of Kitava: This is a solid option for a league starter now that some of his abilities have been buffed. Perhaps now is also the time to experiment with the Manifest Weapon skill, since the weapon AI has been tweaked to be more consistent.
- Witch Hunter: The “Witchbane” ascendancy node now makes enemies have Concentration equal to 30% of their maximum life, making it easier for them to suffer from a less cooldown recovery rate (as a result of a loss of focus). Besides that, the Sorcery Ward now protects you against physical and chaos damage (instead of only elemental damage). Try the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter if you haven’t already.
- Acolyte of Chayula: Although not as strong as the other ascendancy classes, the Acolyte of Chayula remains a strong offensive pick for a PoE 2 league starter due to the buffs to the flames (from Into the Breach) and the Void Illusion skill (from Illusory Void).
- Deadeye: Even though Wind Ward has been removed in Patch 0.4.0, this is compensated for by the addition of the Mirage Deadeye. This ascendancy node works similarly to Mirage Archer, albeit you no longer have to sacrifice a support gem slot to accommodate it. The Lightning Arrow Deadeye remains a strong contender.
- Stormweaver: This ascendancy class got buffed overall. Refracted Infusion now grants a different Elemental Infusion every time. The Stormweaver could also use the new support gems in Patch 0.4.0, such as Advancing Storm (combined with the Firestorm spell), to rain down projectiles from the sky that inflict Ignite and Shock at the same time.
Changes to Itemization
Some unique items have received some massive buffs in Patch 0.4.0. For instance, Mahuxotl’s Machination now increases the effect of socketed soul cores by 66-333% (up from 100%).
The Adorned now increases the effect of corrupted magic jewels by up to 150% (instead of 100%). This will require you to spend more points into getting more jewel sockets, but for builds that actually benefit from that style, The Adorned is a worthy investment.
Here are other notable changes to unique items in Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids:
- Svalinn: Now has 200-300% increased armor (up from 150% to 200%).
- Morior Invictus: Now has 300-400% increased armor, evasion, and energy shield (instead of 200-300%).
- Defiance of Destiny: Now has “recover 2-30% of missing life before being hit by an enemy” (up from 10-20%).
- Cloak of Defiance: Now has “50% of damage is taken from mana before life” (instead of just 30%).
- The Brass Dome: Now has 700-800% increased armor (up from 400-500%).
- Cloak of Flame: Now has “50% of physical damage taken as fire damage” (instead of just 40%).
- Lightning Coil: Now has “30-50% of physical damage from hits is taken as lightning damage” (up from 20-40%).
- Morior Invictus: Now has +45-60 to maximum life per socket filled (up from 25-40). Also, it has +9-12% increased global defenses (up from 6-10%).
- Choir of the Storm: Lightning Bolt skill now has 5 cooldown uses (previously 1).

Commercial Note
The Fate of the Vaal League for Path of Exile 2 is filled with many dangers. The Vaal Temple alone is already daunting, even more so when you face Atziri herself.
That is why I highly recommend that you buy starter gear and PoE 2 Currency to get ahead of the competition. When you have these things, your campaign and endgame progression will be seamless!
That said, you can purchase a starter gear pack for every class in our PoE 2 store, including the Warrior, Sorceress, and Ranger starter packs, among many others!
PoE 2 The Last of the Druids FAQ
What is The Last of the Druids in Path of Exile 2?
The Last of the Druids is the name of the latest expansion for PoE 2. Its main highlight includes the Druid class, as well as the Vaal Temple mechanic, where you face the Queen of the Vaal herself, Atziri.
When Will the Latest Expansion Be Released?
The game’s latest expansion will launch on Friday, December 12, at 11 AM PST. You can start downloading the game files several hours before that.
Is this Expansion Free or Paid?
Sadly, you still need to have an Early Access Key to accomplish the Fate of the Vaal League. However, GGG is going to have a free weekend, starting December 12 to December 15. During this time, you can download and play the game absolutely free of charge!
What New Mechanics Does the Expansion Add?
The main highlight of Patch 0.4.0 is the Vaal Temple. This is basically Incursion 2.0, where you tailor the temple’s layout based on your specifications. At the end of the temple is the Queen of the Vaal herself, Atziri.
Aside from that, the Abyss mechanic from the previous league is now available in both League and Standard modes. This is complete with an Atlas Tree, which enables you to tweak abyssal monster density and boss chance.
How Long Does the Expansion Take to Complete?
It is hard to say at this point. The campaign stays the same, so you can complete it within 4-6 hours. The Vaal Temple is rather complicated, so it might hamper your progression if you spend more hours on it.
Will This Expansion Change Existing Builds?
This is pretty much the case for all PoE 2 expansions. In The Last of the Druids, expect the Blood Mage population to drop due to the heavy nerfs imposed on Atalui’s Bloodletting.
Is the Expansion Beginner-Friendly?
Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids is quite beginner-friendly. Although there are some mechanics that might be too daunting for newcomers (such as the aforementioned Vaal Temple), most of the systems should be fine and far less complicated.
PoE 2 The Last of the Druids: Conclusion
When Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids launches this December 12, the game will have a fresh economy, which is always welcome for an expansion of this magnitude.
The Vaal Temple introduces “Incursion 2.0,” which lets you tweak the layout of the temple according to your preferences. There are certain rewards that await you inside the temple, so I highly recommend that you visit it from time to time.
Most importantly, the Druid is a hybrid class unlike any other in the franchise. It is the only class that can shapeshift into different animal forms. Experiment switching between human and animal forms to get the most out of the Druid!

Druid is so cooooool
