With the release of 0.3.0 The Third Edict, classes and builds got a major overhaul. Before committing to a build, we suggest that you check out our The Third Edict Best Class Tier List, and our guide on the Best Builds in The Third Edict.
It is without question that GGG will make huge balancing changes that will shift the current meta entirely in Patch 0.3.0. The Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter used to be a very popular build, but as PoE 2 went on, it turns out that it has been outshined by other builds.
However, the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter is back in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0. Why? Read further as we give you everything you need to know about this build. This is our Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter build guide for Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict!

Why Play the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter in Patch 0.3.0?
Galvanic Shards is one of the best map-clearing skills in the game. In the first couple of weeks of PoE 2 Early Access, players who chose the Mercenary Class actually applaud the performance of the said skill when it comes to completing the campaign. Everyone who has used it can attest to how incredible it is at dismantling packs of monsters without much effort.
Having said that, Galvanic Shards is a lightning-based attack skill that converts 40% of your physical damage to lightning damage. What's cool about it is that its fragments can hit a single target multiple times, which means that it has the power to deal with rare enemies when you have good gear.
However, Galvanic Shards lack power when fighting bosses. To address that, this build also incorporates another lightning-based attack skill called Shockburst Rounds. This is a rapid-fire skill that, when used against shocked enemies, can deal huge amounts of damage.
There are two popular variations of the build but the one we are going to talk about utilizes the Stormcaller Arrow as well. This is primarily used on bosses to quickly and easily inflict Shock, thus priming enemies to get killed by Shockburst Rounds.
Both Galvanic Shards and Shockburst Rounds received changes in Patch 0.3.0. Let's begin with Galvanic Shards, which got a huge damage boost across the board. However, this is balanced by the fact that it now only has one bolt per clip instead of five. What does this mean? It means that Galvanic Shards now acts like a lightning-based shotgun ammo as opposed to a shotgun/rifle-hybrid like before.
On the other hand, the change to Shockburst Rounds is a straight-up nerf, with its damage being reduced by approximately 15%. This is not a surprising nerf, to be honest, since Shockburst Rounds could potentially melt bosses with the right gear. With these changes, the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter is still awesome, though if you have played this build before, you might have to adjust a bit when it comes to the one-bolt Galvanic Shards.
Keep in mind that you need to have a bow and quiver on the second weapon set in order to use the Stormcaller Arrow. If you want to learn more about this mechanic, feel free to read our PoE 2 weapon set skill points guide. The good news about weapon-swapping in the Rise of the Abyssals League is that there is no more delay in switching between weapons, making this mechanic feel a whole lot smoother!
In addition, we are only going to talk about the non-crit version of the build in this guide, but we will give you some tips later on if you want to play the crit version of the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter.
So, why play this build in the Rise of the Abyssals League? This is intended for people who want to play a character in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict that can map and kill bosses on a modest budget. Plus, the playstyle of this build is quite similar to a commando, so if you are into that sort of thing, then this is the right one for you!
When it comes to the ascendancy class for the Mercenary, the Gemling Legionnaire is definitely the more popular one over the Witch Hunter in the current version of PoE 2. Despite being less famous, the reason why we are using the latter is that he possesses some pretty amazing ascendancy nodes that enable him to eliminate any threat with style and precision.
Pitiless Killer needs no introduction. Taking this node by itself enables you to kill enemies after they drop to a certain HP threshold. For instance, if a rare monster's HP drops below 10% of its maximum, it gets instantly killed!
Judge, Jury, and Executioner is the exact opposite of Pitiless Killer. This particular ascendancy node unlocks the Decimating Strike, which gives you the power to take a huge chunk of the enemy's life on the first hit instead of the last.
Zealous Inquisition is mainly for mapping purposes. When this node is allocated, you have a slight chance to make enemies explode, dealing physical damage to nearby monsters. We will surely take this for our version of the build, though you have the option of switching to another node if you want more defense.
Speaking of which, Obsessive Rituals add another defensive layer called "Ward." This is a barrier that protects you from elemental damage, though it only covers "hits" and not damage over time (like Ignite). Taking Obsessive Rituals does come with a downside, wherein your armor and evasion are significantly decreased.
Now, if you like to have Sorcery Ward because of its protective ability, you can improve that by allocating Ceremonial Ablution. This increases the Sorcery Ward's effect (meaning, how much elemental damage it can absorb), as well as its recovery rate by 50%.
Here is the ideal order of ascendancy nodes to take for the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter:
- Zealous Inquisition
- Pitiless Killer
- Obsessive Rituals
- Judge, Jury, and Executioner OR Ceremonial Ablution

As a follow up, GGG has made one change for the Witch Hunter ascendancy class in the Rise of the Abyssals League. Basically, his "Weapon Master" ascendancy node now converts a whopping 100 passive skill points into weapon set skill points. With this change, you can effectively try some really busted combinations, mostly involving a Crossbow and a Bow+Quiver combo! As a result, you could remove Zealous Inquisition in favor of Weapon Master in the endgame, especially if you have some crazy experiments in mind!
In terms of the stats on gear, here are the ones that we recommend in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0:
- Increased Physical Damage
- Adds Physical Damage
- Adds Physical Damage to Attacks
- Adds Cold Damage to Attacks
- Increased Elemental Damage with Attacks
- Increased Attack Speed
- + to Level of All Projectile Skills
- Gain Mana per Enemy Killed
- Increased Armor/Evasion
- + to Maximum Life
Playstyle
The Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter has a very easy playstyle. In fact, if you want this to be a two-button build, you definitely could! However, we feel that there is much that the Witch Hunter can offer, which is why we have opted to include several tools to make things more interesting.
So basically, your primary clearing skill is Galvanic Shards. Every time you come across a tougher enemy, hit them with Galvanic Shards first to apply Shock, then switch to Shockburst Rounds and fire at will!
On bosses, you have to be able to inflict Shock quickly, which is why you are going to use the Stormcaller Arrow in this scenario. Once Shock is applied, obliterate the enemy by raining some Shockburst Rounds!
Take note that Shock must be inflicted on the enemy before you hit them with Shockburst Rounds. Otherwise, the said skill will do mediocre damage! I am happy to say that Shock now has an eight-second duration in Patch 0.3.0, giving you several more seconds of pure mayhem with Shockburst Rounds before you utilize Stormcaller Arrow again.
Now for utility. Install an Artillery Ballista (previously known as Ripwire Ballista) to slow enemies and pin them down. Utilize this whenever you are surrounded by monsters.
Herald of Thunder should automatically proc just by firing at enemies with Galvanic Shards. This herald skill got nerfed a bit in Patch 0.3.0 in that its radius is now at one meter instead of 1.4 previously.
Then you have the Voltaic Grenade. This is primarily used in conjunction with Artillery Ballista to keep enemies in a contained space. The Voltaic Grenade electrocutes enemies, making sure that they cannot move when they are affected by the said condition.
When you are bursting down enemies with Shockburst Rounds, do not forget to use Emergency Reload as soon as there’s only one or two ammo left in the clip. This is so that you can continuously fire the Shockburst Rounds, ensuring that monsters go down easily.
In dire situations where you need to pin enemies down to escape, you can utilize the default attack, Crossbow Shot, which is enhanced by Pin Support and Maim.
As you can see, the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter is a fun build in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict that has plenty of utility, which comes in handy in various situations.
Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter Gear Recommendations
One of the best things about the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter is that it can perform really well even on budget gear. Of course, we encourage you to invest more, especially when it comes to the weapon.
Having said that, if you need any assistance with the different pieces of gear for this build, you can certainly drop by our PoE 2 Store to get all your rare items and more!
Weapon
Since Galvanic Shards and Shockburst Rounds convert some of your physical damage to lightning damage, you need to use a crossbow that has a good amount of the former. That is why you should opt for the Desolate Crossbow because it provides the highest physical damage compared to its counterparts.
Prioritize getting increased physical damage, elemental damage with attacks, and attack speed. Although not mandatory, you can also benefit from “Gain Mana per Enemy Killed,” especially because you’ll be killing monsters very efficiently.
In the endgame, the mana modifier just mentioned will become an important part of your weapon. That is because you will upgrade to a Desolate Crossbow that has “+ to Level of All Projectile Skills.”
If you do not know, the higher the level of your skill is, the higher its mana cost will be. So, it just stands to reason to acquire the projectile skill levels and gain mana per enemy killed mods together when purchasing your endgame rare crossbow.
It is also worth noting that your Artillery Ballista now takes into account the stats of the weapon you are using in Patch 0.3.0. So, if you have a high-damage physical crossbow, it could potentially be more lethal with every attack (in addition to providing some much-needed utility).

Alternate Weapon
Stormcaller Arrows have a much higher chance of inflicting Shock compared to Galvanic Shards. That is why you will use it whenever you fight map and pinnacle bosses. However, you cannot utilize it with a crossbow, so you have to equip a bow on the second weapon set.
While you might default to an Gemini Bow for the purpose of inflicting Shock, we actually recommend a different bow base—the Ironwood Shortbow. The reason is simple: it has a higher base attack speed compared to the Gemini Bow.
The only reason why you are shifting to a bow is to apply Shock and that’s it. You do not really need the damage (although that is always nice); you just want to be able to fire the Stormcaller Arrows really fast.

Of course, you will also need a complementary quiver for the Expert Shortbow. Hence, get a Primed Quiver with attack speed, projectile speed, and accuracy rating. All other modifiers are just nice additions and are not mandatory for the build.

Body Armor
Some people do not know exactly what armor type to use for the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter. However, it is really simple: Grab all-evasion armor pieces instead of the hybrid armor/evasion. Why? For a couple of reasons.
First, while armor (the defensive layer) reduces the physical damage you take, it does not do a good job of that. This issue is still relevant in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict.
Second, evasion is a much more useful defensive layer that allows you to completely evade the enemy’s attacks. Sure, you barely have any armor to mitigate physical damage, but being able to consistently dodge hits from the enemy is better in helping you survive longer than armor at this point in time.
Evasion is also helpful in increasing your Deflection Rating, which is a new defensive layer that enables you to deflect damage from hits. Deflection essentially prevents 40% of the damage you would have taken from those hits and ensures that you don't get affected by any ailments they might have inflicted on you.
For that reason, we recommend the Slipstrike Vest with evasion mods and maximum life. You also have the freedom to choose which resistance modifiers your particular character needs.

While you can wear the Slipstrike Vest until you switch to another PoE 2 build, you do have the option of wearing the Morior Invictus. If you want, get a Morior Invictus that has “+ to All Attributes” and “+ to All Elemental Resistance” per socketed rune or soul core. “Maximum Life” and “Global Defenses” are also good alternative modifiers for the Morior Invictus.

Helmet
The helmet for this build is nothing fancy. If you want to get the highest amount of evasion, opt for the Trapper Hood with increased evasion rating, life, and mana. You can fit the increased item rarity mod as well.

Gloves
The prefixes for the gloves are the same as in the helmet. However, you must have "Increased Attack Speed" as part of the suffixes to ensure the optimal performance of all your damaging skills. Item rarity is also a safe mod to have for the gloves, though only get this if your resistances are already in check.

A very good alternative to the rare gloves is the Hand of Wisdom and Action. If you switch to these unique gloves, make sure that you have plenty of DEX and INT to get the most out of them.
The Hand of Wisdom and Action is still a viable pair of gloves in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. You can experiment with this on your character. If you are not happy with the results, you can always switch back to the rare gloves.

Boots
The boots must always have the highest tier of "Increased Movement Speed" mod depending on your level. In the endgame, do not settle for less than 30% because you want to be an efficient mapper and boss killer to farm tons of PoE 2 Currency.

Amulet
In Path of Exile 2, there is a new resource specifically intended for auras and it is called Spirit. One of the items that you wear that can roll the said modifier is the amulet, and since the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter requires at least 130 Spirit, grab an amulet with 30-50 Spirit. In case you are not aware, you can gain 100 Spirit just by completing certain quests during the campaign. You can read all about that in our PoE 2 Spirit Guide.
When it comes to the notable passive skills you can instill on the amulet, you can choose Blur (Distilled Paranoia, Distilled Disgust, Distilled Ire) for increased movement speed and evasion or Blurred Motion (Distilled Despair, Distilled Paranoia, Distilled Ire) for increased attack speed, dexterity, and accuracy rating.

Rings
Your main skills deal lightning damage, so it is only fitting to get Breach Rings that boost lightning damage, right? Besides that, the ring can roll "Physical Damage to Attacks," which can contribute to the lethality of Galvanic Shards and Shockburst Rounds. If you want to improve the lightning damage mod, be sure to utilize Esh's Catalyst until you achieve 40% quality.
That combination of mods presupposes that you are wearing a pair of rare gloves. If you have the Hand of Wisdom and Action equipped, the suffixes must have attributes, dexterity, and intelligence to maximize the said gloves' unique effect.

Belt
To complement the Breach Rings, they are always paired with a well-rolled Ingenuity belt. Always go for the highest rolls you can afford. Otherwise, you're just wasting your precious PoE 2 Divine Orbs.

If you cannot afford the Ingenuity just yet, do not worry. As mentioned earlier in our PoE 2 Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter build guide, you can decimate enemies with budget gear. So, grab a rare belt, such as the Plate Belt, and prioritize life, mana, armor, and strength. If you need a bit of boost in some of your resistances, you can roll a couple on the belt as well.

Flasks
While you can use your regular Ultimate Life/Mana Flasks, we actually want you to invest in Olroth's Resolve because it is quite helpful for the build.
Olroth's Resolve adds a new defensive layer that works on top of Sorcery Ward and evasion. This is the flask that you definitely want, especially if you feel that your build is too squishy to handle T15 content or higher.

Jewels
Our version of the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter build in Patch 0.3.0 can have several jewel sockets. You can populate them with rare Emeralds that have any of the following mods:
- Increased Crossbow Reload Speed
- Increased Magnitude of Ailments You Inflict
- Increased Magnitude of Shock You Inflict
- Increased Damage with Crossbows
- Increased Attack Speed
- Increased Attack Speed with Crossbows
- Increased Lightning Damage
- Damage Penetrates % Lightning Resistance
- Increased Effect of Your Mark Skills
- Increased Evasion Rating
- Increased Movement Speed
- Increased Chance to Shock
If you want to improve your attack speed in a more impactful way, invest in a Time-Lost Emerald with "Notable Passive Skills in Radius Also Grant % Increased Attack Speed with Crossbows" just like this:

Insert the Time-Lost Emerald in the jewel socket near "Instant Reload" so that you can gain a 10% increased attack speed (assuming that you have 2% per notable passive skill indicated on the jewel).
For unique jewels, we recommend that you obtain the Against the Darkness unique jewel, specifically one with "4% Extra Lightning Damage." The other mod can be anything, including maximum life, dexterity, and intelligence, among others.

Megalomaniac is another welcome addition to the build. This unique jewel can have up to three different notable passive skills. You can have any passive skill that you want so long as it benefits the build in some way.

Passive Tree
We are going to say this right off the bat—leveling a Mercenary is a bit slow compared to the other classes in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. This is largely due to how clunky crossbow skills feel at the beginning. However, you can improve your leveling journey somehow by making a beeline towards Instant Reload, which provides a whopping 40% increase in crossbow reload speed.
After getting Instant Reload, head down and allocate “Sand in the Eyes” for increased attack speed and a slight chance to blind enemies when using Galvanic Shards and Shockburst Rounds.
Next, go right and take Lightning Rod first, followed by Flash Storm, Emboldened Avatar, and Forces of Nature. Once that is done, continue going to the right-most part of the passive tree and then head upward until you get to Coming Calamity. Go up again and take Wild Storm to give your primary damaging skills more oomph.
At this point, you have complete freedom on where you want to go. If you like to improve your defenses, allocate Battle-hardened and General’s Bindings. Only get Insulated Treads and Strong Chin when you have the Time-Lost Emerald mentioned earlier.
Now, if you have trouble satisfying the attribute requirements of your gear, you can allocate Polymathy to help you with that. You might as well take Jack of All Trades too while you are at it!
Tips and Strategies [Patch 0.3.0]
Still Squishy? Try Getting More Evasion
If you are not satisfied with your current survivability when playing the PoE 2 Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter build in the Rise of the Abyssals League, then allocate more evasion nodes on the passive tree.
Assuming that you are wearing the rare Slipstrike Vest, you will get great value from allocating Beastial Skin. This greatly amplifies the total evasion rating of your equipped body armor.
Additionally, you can allocate the Backup Plan notable passive so that you gain a hefty boost in evasion rating if you have been hit in the past several seconds.
Improving your evasion rating as high as you can is a must now in Patch 0.3.0 due to the addition of the Deflection mechanic in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. Thus, having additional evasion rating on jewels or on any item that can roll the said modifier is a good thing.
Ultimately, your offense is the best defense, so investing in a high physical damage crossbow is a must. Once you have that, you can easily kill enemies long before they have a chance to land a single hit!
Go for the Crit Version
The version of the PoE 2 Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter build we have talked about in this build guide is the non-crit variant. This is because it scales really well the more jewels you put on the passive tree.
However, you can definitely opt for the crit version if you want more damage without relying on those jewels. You do have to make sure that you maximize your critical hit chance, though. So, for that reason, buy an Desolate Crossbow with critical hit chance and critical damage bonus.
In terms of the passive skills, allocate nodes that have something to do with crits, such as Tainted Strike, Dispatch Foes, and Heartstopping, among others. You can get the points to allocate these nodes by replacing Lightning Rod, Flash Storm, Forces of Nature, and Emboldened Avatar.
Another incentive to playing the crit version of this build is that you can completely forgo the Stormcaller Arrow. Instead, wear the Choir of the Storm, which enables you to trigger a Greater Lightning Bolt on a critical hit. This skill has a very huge chance to inflict Shock, making it a viable replacement for the Stormcaller Arrow specifically for that purpose.
Improve the Quality of Your Gems
Improving the quality of your skill gems, particularly Galvanic Shards and Shockburst Rounds, is something that you should do whenever you have the chance. Galvanic Shards gains two additional fragments per shot, while Shockburst Rounds get four additional bolts per clip. That is why it is imperative that you use PoE 2 Gemcutter’s Prisms to achieve max quality asap!
Is Armor Useless?
Quite frankly, armor is still not a good defensive layer Even in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. GGG has not made meaningful changes to armor in Patch 0.3.0. That is why you should opt for all-evasion pieces of gear for the time being to boost Sorcery Ward and improve your survivability.
You could stack a lot of armor if that is what you want. To make it work, though, you have to stack copious amounts of it, which does require a huge investment in PoE 2 Currency.
If you don't want to deal with that, stick to evasion-based gear.
Don’t Like Sorcery Ward?
Sorcery Ward, while useful in mitigating the elemental damage you receive from hits, also reduces your armor and evasion by quite a bit. If you find having Sorcery Ward more trouble than it’s worth, you can replace the Obsessive Rituals ascendancy node with Witchbane instead.
Witchbane imposes a new mechanic called “Concentration” in that every time you hit the enemy with your attacks, they lose concentration. When they have zero concentration, the cooldown recovery rate of their abilities is reduced immensely, making them unable to execute their most damaging attacks as a result.
If you want to turn the Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter into a full-time boss killer, you can replace "Zealous Inquisition” with “No Mercy.” This ascendancy node gives you a huge damage boost against monsters that have reduced concentration (up to a maximum of 30% more damage). Alternatively, the newly buffed Weapon Master ascendancy node is a good option, especially if you want to use the weapon-swapping system in the best way possible.
POB
PoE 2 Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter in Patch 0.3.0: Final Thoughts
The Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter is one of the best builds in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict, especially after the changes made in Patch 0.3.0. GGG has definitely cooked this time around, making this build shine in the Rise of the Abyssals League.
Sure, Galvanic Shards only fires once before needing to reload, but it does huge amounts of damage per ammo now, making it more effective than ever! That is why this build is quite enjoyable to play for those commando-style players in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict!
With all of that said, we hope that you have enjoyed our PoE 2 Galvanic Shards Witch Hunter build guide. If you have any questions about the build, you are free to leave a comment. Ask anything and we will do our best to answer!
