Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict brought a bunch of awesome balancing changes, so much so that the Ice Strike Invoker has become even more powerful than the previous expansion!

If you are interested in knowing the new and improved version of this PoE 2 build, then read further. This is our updated build guide for the Ice Strike Invoker in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict!

Don’t forget that we have a PoE 2 Store that’s open 24/7 to assist you with any currency and item needs.

Why Play the Ice Strike Invoker in Patch 0.3.0?

The main selling point of the Ice Strike Invoker is that it is the “safer” build compared to Monk Builds that use Tempest Flurry or Flicker Strike. The reason for this is that Ice Strike can freeze enemies easily, preventing them from hitting you just long enough for you to kill them within several hits.

Apart from that, Ice Strike deals relatively more damage than the aforementioned skills, particularly because it converts almost all of your physical damage to cold damage. With enough PoE 2 Gemcutter’s Prisms, you can attack faster with this skill as well.

Compared to the other Path of Exile 2 builds, the Ice Strike Invoker can effectively take on bosses without worrying too much about survivability. Being able to freeze enemies is, in itself, a form of defense because enemies cannot do anything while they’re frozen.

If you're comparing caster-oriented builds, be sure to also check out the Best Caster Builds in PoE 2: Blood Mage - Chronomancer & Lich Guide [0.2.1] — these builds offer alternate caster paths that emphasize spell damage and utility and can help you decide which flavor of caster suits you best.

This build has more defenses in the Rise of the Abyssals League compared to before. The main addition here is the introduction of Deflection—a new defensive mechanic that prevents 40% of damage taken from almost every attack or spell in the game. Thanks to Deflection, the Ice Strike Invoker becomes near-immortal, especially in the late game!

Furthermore, you have the freedom of choosing either Chaos Inoculation or Acrobatics to improve your chances of survival. In fact, if you do not have a problem with PoE 2 Currency, you can actually allocate both! With Deflection now a viable defensive layer, you can go all-out on evasion, particularly if you are not fond of the nerf to Eternal Youth.

That said, the Ice Strike Invoker works admirably well even with mostly rare pieces of gear. This makes the build incredible in the PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0 SSF League.

Now, Ice Strike is only one part of the equation. You also need to choose the right ascendancy class for the job which, in this case, is the Invoker. I Am the Blizzard is an ascendancy node that grants 10% extra cold damage. Whenever you freeze enemies with Ice Strike, you create a chilled ground that also slows down nearby monsters.

And I Shall Rage is a huge elemental damage boost. It is a buff that you have to build up before you can use it. However, once it’s activated, you gain a massive boost in elemental damage for 10 seconds. That should be enough to obliterate all map monsters!

If you don’t find “And I Shall Rage” useful due to it not being available as often as you’d like, then you can go for I Am the Thunder. This also works almost the same way as “I Am the Blizzard” except that it grants extra lightning damage and creates a Shocked Ground when you inflict Shock on an enemy. Shock is nice because it increases the damage taken by those affected by the debuff by at least 20%.

Most Ice Strike Invokers are built to have a relatively high critical hit chance. Sunder My Enemies capitalizes on that by ensuring that monsters always get the full unmitigated damage from your Ice Strike when you land a critical strike.

The Ice Strike Invoker uses plenty of persistent buffs. In fact, for this build, you’ll need at least 235 Spirit. To achieve this amount, you will allocate “Lead Me Through Grace.” This is an ascendancy node that grants additional Spirit based on the evasion and energy shield values on your equipped body armor.

Take note that “Lead Me Through Grace” has been nerfed in that you now have to get more evasion and/or energy shield on your equipped body armor for this to work. More on this later on in this PoE 2 build guide.

In Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict, the Invoker's Meditate Skill now has a significantly better energy shield recharge rate than before. Because of this, it has become more viable in the Rise of the Abyssals League, so you could replace one of the ascendancy nodes to get a hold of it.

Additionally, there is a new mechanic called Elemental Infusions in Patch 0.3.0. Every time you use a skill, a Remnant will be dropped to the ground depending on the skill's damage type. In the case of Ice Strike, Remnants that improve cold damage are dropped to the ground when you hit enemies with the said skill.

Now, I mention the Elemental Infusion mechanic here because the Invoker's "and Scatter Them to the Winds" ascendancy node has been buffed in this update. All of the elemental damage bonuses that this ascendancy node provides have been buffed across the board, making it a viable node to take if you are playing the Ice Strike Invoker.

With that said, if you want to incorporate both "Faith is a Choice (for Meditate)," as well as "and Scatter Them to the Winds," you can replace Sunder My Enemies and I am the Thunder.

If you don't like to experiment with the newly buffed nodes, you could go for the tried-and-tested nodes for the Ice Strike Invoker:

  1. I Am the Blizzard
  2. And I Shall Rage OR I Am the Thunder
  3. Sunder My Enemies
  4. Lead Me Through Grace

When it comes to gear, look for any of these modifiers:

  • Added Physical Damage
  • Added Cold Damage
  • Added Lightning Damage to Attacks
  • Increased Physical Damage
  • Increased Elemental Damage with Attacks
  • Increased Attack Speed
  • Increased Critical Hit Chance
  • + to Critical Damage Bonus
  • Increased Evasion
  • Increased Energy Shield
  • + to Evasion Rating
  • + to Maximum Energy Shield
  • Increased Fire/Cold/Lightning Resistance
  • + to All Elemental Resistances
  • + to Dexterity
  • + to Intelligence

Playstyle

For those gearing up for campaign and early-game content, the Best Leveling Builds in Path of Exile 2 [0.2.1] guide is a strong companion — it outlines builds that level efficiently and make smooth transitions into the late game.

Do you know why the Ice Strike Invoker is also ideal for PoE 2 beginners? That is because this build has a very easy playstyle with no complicated mechanics whatsoever! All you have to do is attack enemies with Ice Strike and that’s it!

Whenever you Shock or Freeze an enemy, you will gain Power Charges, which allows you to activate Charged Staff. Not only will you gain heaps of lightning damage with Charged Staff, but it also allows your attacks to gain some range. Keep your Charged Staff active to deal huge amounts of damage.

During boss fights, drop the Tempest Bell and continuously hit it with Ice Strike. Since you can deal lightning damage via Charged Staff and freeze enemies with Ice Strike, you can inflict both Shock and Freeze on it at the same time. This causes the bell to create more damaging shockwaves as a result.

During the campaign, you will gain 100 Spirit by completing certain side quests. This will give you enough Spirit to activate a few buffs. Having said that, the buffs that you’ll activate are Herald of Ice, Wind Dancer, and Herald of Thunder. The other persistent auras (and support gems that require Spirit) can be activated at a later time.

If you'd like to add Frost Bomb into this build, you could replace Charge Infusion for this one. Frost Bomb is great because it now deals considerably more damage (especially against chilled enemies) and applies Elemental Exposure, which makes enemies more vulnerable to your attacks for a short period.

Ice Strike Invoker Gear Recommendations

To make this build work even on a modest budget, you want to achieve at least a 45% critical hit chance. You can improve your chances of landing a critical hit by allocating the right nodes on the passive tree, as well as wearing the right gear.

The “Increased Critical Hit Chance” modifier can roll on the weapon, helmet, and amulet. Other than that, you can populate your jewel sockets with Sapphire Jewels that improve your critical hit chance as well.

We also have a wide selection of PoE 2 rare items in our online store. If you wish to obtain the best pieces of gear that we will recommend in this section of the build guide, all without farming for countless hours, then come shop with us!

Weapon

GGG has changed the names of all base items in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. Previously, we recommended the Expert Gothic Staff as it had the highest base crit chance over the other quarterstaves. But now, you should settle for the new Striking Staff for its highest base physical damage and a respectable amount of crit.

That said, the same modifiers will still apply to this new quarterstaff, including the physical damage mods, elemental damage with attacks, and attack speed. And oh, do not forget about the critical hit chance and critical damage bonus mods as well!

Body Armor

The body armor you are going to use for the Ice Strike Invoker is important because it influences how much Spirit you can gain from the “Lead Me Through Grace” ascendancy node.

Due to the massive change on the “Lead Me Through Grace” ascendancy node in the previous expansion, you now have to get more evasion and energy shield on your body armor. You need at least 1,400 evasion and 520 energy shield on your equipped body armor to have enough Spirit to activate everything.

That said, grab the new Falconer’s Jacket because it has the highest evasion and energy shield values among other hybrid body armor in the game. You want flat and percentage increases in evasion rating and energy shield for the prefixes, and elemental resistance on the suffixes. If you have already capped your resistances, you can go for DEX and/or INT instead.

Don’t forget to socket Greater Iron Runes into the body armor for a 50% increase in EV and ES.

Helmet

Our version of the PoE 2 Ice Strike Invoker in Patch 0.3.0 has “Subterfuge Mask” on the passive tree. This node gives you a lot of evasion depending on the amount of energy shield your helmet has.

Having said that, we recommend that you acquire the new Kamasan Tiara with flat ES, percentage ES, and critical hit chance. You can also get a couple of resistance modifiers, whichever you have not capped yet. If you don’t need an increase in critical hit chance because you have more than 70% already, then go for INT instead.

Gloves

In this gear slot, you want some hybrid evasion/energy shield gloves like the new Vaal Wraps. The modifiers you are looking for are Added physical damage, cold damage, and lightning damage to attacks, as well as intelligence and “Gain Mana per Enemy Killed.” Why this collection of mods, you ask?

Added physical and cold damage contribute to enhancing the lethality of Ice Strike. The added lightning damage allows you to inflict Shock on the Tempest Bell, granting it more damage with each successive hit!

The INT mod on these gloves is to help improve your energy shield values. And, the mana per enemy killed is not necessary, though it certainly helps sustain mana, especially while mapping.

Now, the ideal rare gloves have “Increased Rarity of Items” because it is one of the only pieces of gear that can have that modifier and will not affect the performance of the build. If you don’t care about that, you can freely replace it with an increased critical damage bonus.

Hand of Wisdom and Action hasn't been changed in Patch 0.3.0. Although HoWA is not as powerful as it used to be, this unique item is still incredible in improving your damage in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. These gloves have the same modifiers, albeit the added lightning damage you receive will be much less now compared to before.

If you want, you can buy the Hand of Wisdom and Action in our PoE 2 Store.

If you opt for the Hand of Wisdom and Action for the PoE 2 Ice Strike Invoker, then we highly recommend that you insert a couple of Boar Talismans. The Boar Talisman, for those who do not know, allows you to gain 1 Rage on Melee Hit. When you have two of these inserted into a corrupted HoWA, you can gain two Rage every time you whack an enemy with your quarterstaff, thus alleviating the need for Rage Support on your Ice Strike setup!

Do you want to purchase the Boar Talisman? We have that in our PoE 2 Store too!

Boots

When it comes to the boots, you want at least 30% increased movement speed (though you should invest in 35% when you have the means to do so). After that, you want to have evasion and energy shield modifiers so that you can attain 300+ evasion and 100+ energy shield with Iron Runes socketed into the boots.

The new Quickslip Shoes are the ideal base for the boots because of their high amount of EV and ES. For the suffixes, you want INT, item rarity, and a resistance modifier. Again, if you don’t care about item rarity, you can swap it for another resistance mod.

Amulet

Get the Lunar Amulet to improve your maximum energy shield or the Lapis Amulet if you want more INT. As mentioned earlier in this PoE 2 Ice Strike Invoker build guide, you can get increased critical hit chance on the amulet as well. If you have the budget, the amulet can also roll “Increased Critical Damage Bonus.” Take note that having these two crit modifiers on the amulet makes it extremely expensive, so you might want to obtain enough PoE 2 Divine Orbs.

You can instill two amazing notable passives on the amulet. The first is Overwhelming Strike, which increases your critical hit chance and critical damage bonus by 20%. This requires Liquid Despair, Liquid Envy, and Liquid Disgust.

The second notable passive skill you can instill on your amulet is Stormcharged. This node is a bit expensive because you need two Liquid Fear and one Liquid Envy. Well, that’s okay because this node is pretty useful. What it does is it not only increases your critical hit chance by 20% but also boosts your elemental damage by 40% when you’ve landed a critical hit recently.

If you have a high enough critical hit chance, you can replace those two notable passive skills with Doomsayer for improved mapping efficiency. This increases the damage and area of effect of Herald of Thunder and Herald of Ice in case you are wondering.

Now, if you decide to not spend passive points to get the Subterfuge Mask, you can have it instilled on your amulet instead. This requires Liquid Ire, Liquid Suffering, and Liquid Paranoia socketed in that order.

Rings

Before you allocate Chaos Inoculation, wear a couple of Amethyst Rings to somehow give you a relatively good amount of chaos resistance. This particular resistance modifier is needed, especially when you have reached the endgame where monsters that deal chaos damage become more prevalent.

After taking Chaos Inoculation, you can replace the Amethyst Rings with Breach Rings that have added physical damage, added lightning damage, and increased lightning damage. The reason for this type of ring is that it can achieve more than 20% quality just by using catalysts. That said, use the Reaver’s Catalyst to enhance the attack modifiers on the Breach Ring.

It is worth noting that the Breach Ring now only has a maximum quality of 40%. That won’t matter in the grand scheme of things because it is still a substantial upgrade over the other rings in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict.

Early on in your PoE 2 leveling journey, you can equip the Polcirkeln in one of your ring slots. This makes your Herald of Ice proc more frequently because of its unique modifier, where enemies that are chilled are shattered as though they are frozen.

Belt

The Ice Strike Invoker can wear a rare belt and a unique one. The rare belt is the Linen Belt with mana, STR, and two resistance mods of your choosing. If you are wondering why this belt is used over the others, it is because the Linen Belt increases the amount of mana you get from your Mana Flask. Just so you know, you can actually use Neural Catalysts on the Linen Belt to further improve its mana modifiers.

Save up some PoE 2 Divine Orbs until you can afford an Ingenuity. This belt pretty much makes your rings so much more awesome by enhancing their modifiers by up to a certain percentage.

Now, Ingenuity has been re-adjusted in that it no longer provides up to 90% increased bonuses from your equipped rings. Instead, each ring slot has a different percentage increase, up to 30%. Furthermore, this unique belt now gives you two extra charm slots, which you can use to equip the Stone Charm and Silver Charm.

Flasks

  • Increased Amount Recovered
  • Increased Charges OR Gain # Flask Charges per Second

Jewels

Normally, Monk Builds in Path of Exile 2 can benefit from Emerald Jewels because they can roll Increased attack speed and increased damage with quarterstaves. However, the Ice Strike Invoker deals cold damage, not to mention that it also scales energy shield as a defensive layer. Because of this, you can use some Sapphire Jewels as well.

Here are the modifiers to look for in these jewels:

  • Emerald
    • Increased Critical Damage Bonus for Attack Damage
    • Increased Attack Speed
    • Increased Attack Speed with Quarterstaves
    • Increased Damage with Quarterstaves
    • Increased Attack Damage
    • Increased Elemental Damage
    • 2% Increased Movement Speed
  • Sapphire
    • Recover % Mana on Kill
    • Increased Cold Damage
    • Increased Critical Hit Chance
    • Increased Critical Damage Bonus
    • Increased Maximum Energy Shield

Against the Darkness can roll different modifiers. If you are thinking of purchasing one for your Ice Strike Invoker, get the version that grants extra cold and lightning damage. Slot this into the jewel socket near “One with the Storm” to gain a massive damage boost!

If you can stretch your budget for one more unique jewel, then obtain the Prism of Belief that specifically states “+ to Level of All Ice Strike Skills.” Keep in mind that any increases made to the level of Ice Strike also make it more mana-intensive. You might need the “Gain Mana per Enemy Killed” modifier on a couple of your gear pieces to address the increase in mana cost.

Passive Skill Tree

When you start playing as a Monk in Path of Exile 2, you want to take the nodes that provide increased skill speed and start from there. After taking Flow Like Water and Crashing Wave, concentrate on improving your critical hit chance by taking Moment of Truth and Critical Exploit.

Once that is done, go right and up until you get Resonance. Take the nodes on the left that have something to do with crit, such as True Strike, For the Jugular, and Deadly Force. You can also take Deep Trance if you want, though you want to continue right and down until you get to the quarterstaff nodes on the passive tree.

Continue downward and allocate skill points to get Coming Calamity, Heartbreaking, Struck Through, and Heartstopping.

After you take Careful Assassin and Thin Ice on the upper-right corner of the passive tree, you can then start allocating the evasion and energy shield nodes like Mindful Awareness and Subterfuge Mask. If you instill the latter on your amulet, take Essence of the Mountain instead. To understand why some of these nodes are essential for the build to work, you can read our Best Notable Passive Skills in Path of Exile 2 Early Access article for more details.

When you have at least 3,000 energy shield through your gear and jewels, you are now ready to take Chaos Inoculation. If you'd like to recover energy shield by using the Life Flask, don't forget to allocate Eternal Youth as well. Eternal Youth is not mandatory, however, so you can use the passive skill point to take any other node you prefer.

Tips and Strategies [Patch 0.3.0]

Use Charge Infusion if Low on Crit Chance

To be able to land critical hits more often, you want to achieve at least a 50% critical hit chance. This is easily obtainable as you progress through the game since you will get enough passive skill points to allocate the much-needed crit nodes.

However, if you are still below level 50, you can use Charge Infusion to improve your chances of landing a critical strike on the enemy. If you no longer have a need for Charge Infusion, you could replace it with Mana Remnants, especially if you find your mana-sustaining ability to be insufficient.

Frost Bomb can also be used as a replacement for Charge Infusion. This cold-based spell lets you inflict Elemental Exposure on enemies, making all of your damaging elemental skills to become more potent against those affected by the said debuff (not just Ice Strike).

Solving the Mana Issues

Ice Strike can deplete your mana quickly, especially if you have multiple items equipped that grant "+ to Level of All Melee Skills." To address the increasing mana cost of your primary ability, there are a few things that you can do.

The easiest way to solve your mana issues is by having the "Gain # Mana per Enemy Killed" modifier. This can roll on your weapon, gloves, and rings. Although you will still see your mana drop since this build attacks pretty fast, the said modifier does help sustain mana nevertheless.

If you want to take things a step further, add a couple of jewels that have "Recover 2% of Mana on Kill." This can only be felt while mapping because the modifier requires you to eliminate enemies, though it should be enough to alleviate your concerns with mana.

How about when you are fighting bosses? Well, you can use a Mana Flask with "Gain # Flask Charges per Second" or rely on Thief's Torment for its "mana gain per enemy hit" mod.

Boar Talisman is Underrated

In the past, we suggested that you place a couple of Ruby Jewels that have "Gain 1 Rage on Melee Hit." However, because GGG has removed a lot of jewel sockets in Patch 0.3.0 as part of the company's effort to bring balance to the game, socketing Ruby Jewels instead of Emeralds and Sapphires is no longer feasible.

That is why major emphasis is placed on the new Boar Talisman. This new item pretty much does the same thing as the Ruby Jewel described above. If you want to get your hands on it, you can farm the Azmeri Wisps until one will eventually drop for you.

Use Frozen Locus or Frost Bomb

If you no longer need Charge Infusion, you should definitely replace it with something more useful. Besides Mana Remnants, you could swap Charge Infusion with Frost Bomb or Frozen Locus. These skills will enable you to freeze more enemies at once, making them ripe for the killing!

We definitely encourage you to try Frozen Locus or Frost Bomb, especially if you find your ability to freeze enemies somewhat lacking.

Should You Transition to CI?

CI is short for Chaos Inoculation in Path of Exile 2. It is a keystone passive that makes you completely immune to chaos damage, including from direct hits and damage over time. That said, most people do not know exactly when to transition to the CI version of the Ice Strike Invoker. Fortunately, you are not like most people because you have stumbled upon our PoE 2 guide!

Anyway, the right time to allocate Chaos Inoculation is when you have at least 3,000 energy shield and a relatively high amount of evasion. This can be achieved by wearing mostly EV- and ES-based gear, such as the new Falconer's Jacket, Quickslip Shoes, etc.

Always invest however much PoE 2 Currency you need on the chest armor because it is crucial to your success. Remember, this build requires at least 235 Spirit, so wearing body armor with at least 1,400+ evasion and over 530 energy shield is a must.

Now, it is important to note that Eternal Youth no longer provides immediate ES recovery, so if you were using this keystone before, you might want to look into Deflection and opt for pure evasion instead.

Ice Strike Invoker

PoE 2 Ice Strike Invoker in Patch 0.3.0: Final Thoughts

Patch 0.3.0 has made the Ice Strike Invoker relatively better than in the previous expansion. The major buff to Meditate has made it a viable skill to take if you are playing this build in the Rise of the Abyssals League.

Hand of Wisdom and Action and Ingenuity remains on this build, though you'll want near-perfect rolls to maximize their effects.

With handy new tools at his disposal, the Ice Strike Invoker still has the power to decimate rare monsters, map bosses, and pinnacle bosses with relative ease! This is especially true now due to the introduction of the Elemental Infusion mechanic.

Having said all of that, are you going to play the new and improved Ice Strike Invoker in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict? If so, what made you try it over the other PoE 2 builds? Let us know in the comments!
