Spirit is a resource that is meant for enabling persistent auras in PoE 2. GGG has made no major changes to the Spirit System in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients. However, Patch 0.5.0 did bring some new items that provide Spirit, with some that you can equip and others you can insert into your gear.

If you want to learn more about this resource, then we encourage you to read this article to completion. This is our PoE 2 Spirit Guide, which covers everything you need to know, including the new unique items from Return of the Ancients!

As always, feel free to drop by our PoE 2 Store at any time. We sell all of the items that you will see in this article and more!

What is Spirit in PoE 2?

spirit resource ui

How to use Spirit in PoE 2? This is often the question asked by beginners and returning PoE 1 players alike. Well, before anything else, we must first define what it is.

Spirit is a new resource in Path of Exile 2 that is mainly used to activate persistent auras, skills, and minions. When you see the words "reserve" or "reservation," that just tells you how much Spirit is needed to enable any of the aforementioned things.

Now, the reason why Spirit is introduced in the sequel is that Jonathan Rogers, one of the game directors for PoE 2, was not fond of the idea that Path of Exile 1 players had to reserve the vast majority of their mana for buffs.

In addition, there are even PoE builds that use the Blood Magic keystone passive, which essentially reserves life instead of mana when activating beneficial auras.

Having said that, adding a completely new resource like Spirit helps ensure that you have enough mana for your active skills and HP to survive in the unforgiving world of Wraeclast.

Now, to actually use Spirit, you have to create a gem using the Uncut Spirit Gem. Right-clicking on this item will present you with a Gemcutting UI that tells you the best Spirit Gems for your particular Path of Exile 2 build.

uncut spirit gem

The Uncut Spirit Gem is a random loot, so you can obtain it just by defeating enemies in the campaign or on maps. As you progress through the game, you will get higher-level Uncut Spirit Gems that you can use to upgrade your existing buffs and meta-skills.

persistent buff skill gems

By default, you will be presented with the buffs that are suited for your chosen class. However, you can pretty much create any Spirit Gem you like by clicking on the "All Gems" tab. If you decide to do so, make sure to use the handy search function at the bottom of the UI to look for the skill you intend to incorporate into your PoE 2 build.

There are many different skills that reserve Spirit in Path of Exile 2. However, these are the ones that are the most popular of the bunch:

  • Wind Dancer: Greatly increases evasion rating per stage. Mainly used by evasion-based classes like the Ranger, Monk, and Mercenary.
  • Herald of Thunder: This persistent buff is a herald skill that sends deadly lightning bolts down from the sky after killing a shocked enemy. Activating Herald of Thunder can help you get rid of map monsters quite efficiently. Used mainly by Monks, Rangers, and Mercenaries, though almost any PoE 2 class can utilize it, so long as they specialize in elemental damage.
  • Raging Spirits: When this buff is activated, using any of your active fire skills allows you to summon flaming skulls that attack nearby enemies incessantly.
  • Skeletal Arsonist: While not as popular as before, the Skeletal Arsonist is still pretty awesome in the DoTH League. This skill lets you summon bomb-throwing minions that deal huge amounts of fire damage. The amount of Spirit used to call forth these arsonists can range from 39 to 90, depending on the level of the skill itself.
  • Time of Need: This persistent aura is typically utilized by Warriors, Titans, Warbringers, and the new Smiths of Kitava. Time of Need periodically heals you and also removes any elemental ailments and curses affecting you.
  • Herald of Ice: Monks and Rangers can greatly benefit from this Spirit Skill. Herald of Ice causes frozen enemies to shatter on death, dealing massive cold damage to nearby monsters due to the resulting explosion.
  • Herald of Ash: Similar to the previously mentioned herald skill, Herald of Ash will cause monsters to explode; only this time, nearby enemies are Ignited as a result.
  • Combat Frenzy: Used extensively by Monk, Ranger, and Huntress builds in PoE 2, Combat Frenzy is ideal for keeping Frenzy Charges up consistently. When the Resonance keystone passive is allocated, Power Charges are gained instead of Frenzy Charges (only Monk Builds allocate the said keystone, FYI).
  • Companions: GGG added a skill called Tame Beast to the game, which allows you to befriend an enemy and have it fight by your side. The result is an ally that can provide beneficial buffs and utilities depending on the beast you have tamed. Companions reserve a substantial amount of Spirit, so be prepared to make some changes to fit them into your build.
  • Cast on Elemental Ailment: This is a meta gem in Path of Exile 2 that consolidates Cast on Shock, Cast on Ignite, and Cast on Freeze into one. While the addition of this gem is nice to combine all three elemental ailments, you now need to reserve 100 Spirit (instead of 60 from the previous meta gems each). Monks, Deadeyes, and Stormweavers can make good use of this Spirit Gem because of the fact that they can unleash devastating elemental skills on a whim.
  • Cast on Critical: This is another meta-skill that has gained so much traction in Path of Exile 2. Its popularity stems from the fact that a lot of people spec into crit versions of their favorite PoE 2 builds, thus enabling them to take advantage of Cast on Critical (aka CoC) to automatically trigger certain skills (like Comet).
  • Rhoa Mount: The Rhoa Mount is a good way to use projectile skills from bows and spears without the added movement speed penalty. Increasing the gem’s quality now also increases the reservation efficiency of summoning the mount.

The core Spirit System in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients (Patch 0.5.0) remains largely the same. The only difference is that new items have been introduced and some existing ones have been updated with new values.

How to Get Spirit in PoE 2

So, you have decided to create a new character in Path of Exile 2, and you have planned the buffs that you’re going to activate for your particular build. The problem is that a freshly created character begins with zero Spirit. What gives?

Spirit can be obtained by equipping certain items or by completing some side quests. Let’s talk about the latter first, since they can easily be missed for those who just breeze through the campaign.

You can get 30 Spirit for free by fighting The King in the Mists in Act 1. Go to Freythorn and activate a few Ritual Altars in the area. After doing that, you will encounter the formidable boss at the end of the map.

king in the mists spirit reward

Don’t worry, he is relatively easy to fight, provided that you equip the best items that you can find before heading into the boss area. Don’t forget to perform numerous Dodge Rolls to avoid getting hit.

Once you have defeated The King in the Mists, he will drop an item called the Gembloom Skull. Right-click on it to get a permanent 30 points of Spirit.

gembloom skull

The next Spirit-boosting item can be obtained by defeating the boss named Ignagduk, the Bog Witch. She can be found in The Azak Bog in Act 3. However, the entrance to this place can no longer be found in the Infested Barrens. Instead, you can now find it by going through the Matlan Waterways.

Ignagduk can be annoying for PoE 2 melee builds because she can fly away as part of her moveset. Once she’s defeated the first time, she will drop the Gemrot Skull, which can be consumed to gain 30 points of Spirit.

gemrot skull

You will have about 60 Spirit for a while because the last 40 can only be yours when you reach the Interlude Acts. The final Spirit-boosting item can be acquired by defeating Lythara, the Wayward Spear in Kriar Village.

lythara wayward spear

Lythara is a bit cumbersome to deal with, particularly because she's agile and her attacks hit hard. Before you fight her, make sure that your chaos resistance is above 40% to stand a chance. Furthermore, you want to level up your primary skill to the highest level possible for your current progress.

If you're having trouble killing her, I highly suggest that you level up at least once or improve your primary skills by investing in items that have "+ to Level of [insert skill archetype] gems." For instance, if you're using Spark, you should go for "+ to Level of Lightning Spell Skills" or "+ to Level of Spell Skills" to ensure that you deal the maximum amount of damage to Lythara.

Now, defeating Lythara will reward you with the Gemcrust Skull. Upon activating this last Spirit Item, you should have a total of 100 Spirit. Congratulations!

It is important to note that the monster level of Azak Bog (where Ignagduk can be found) has also increased from 36 to 40 as a result.
Lythara, the Wayward Spear+40 SpiritGetting this bonus results in 100 total Spirit from questsLythara can be found in the Interludes, specifically in Kriar Village.

Now, if you are playing a minion build that requires at least 15 minions to be effective, having 100 Spirit is not going to cut it. So, where do you get even more Spirit in Path of Exile 2?

There are three easily obtainable items in the game that grant Spirit. They are the Sceptre, Solar Amulet, and body armor. Sceptres are special because they grant 100 Spirit right off the bat. If that isn’t enough, you can boost that further by rolling it with a certain PoE 2 currency to get “% Increased Spirit.”

envoys sceptre

On the other hand, the Solar Amulet can roll up to 15 flat points of Spirit on its implicit modifier. Do you want more? The good news is that all amulets in PoE 2 can roll Spirit as an explicit modifier as well. You can get as much as 50 Spirit if you get lucky with amulet crafting, so have a bunch of PoE 2 Exalted Orbs ready.

The only reason why we recommend the Solar Amulet if you want a bunch of Spirit is that it adds up to 15 points on top of whatever amount you get from the explicit mod.

horror gorget solar amulet

Body armors can also roll Spirit as an explicit modifier. This is the way to go if either the Sceptre or Solar Amulet is not ideal to use for your particular Path of Exile 2 build. You can receive a maximum of 60 Spirit from the Body Armor, 50 Spirit from the Amulet (60 Spirit if Sanctified), and 180 Spirit from the Sceptre (200 if Sanctified).

Unique Items That Grant Spirit in PoE 2

Wait, you still need more Spirit in Path of Exile 2? The only way for you to increase the amount of Spirit that you have, even after equipping a Sceptre, body armor, and amulet, is to incorporate certain unique items into your PoE 2 build.

Here is a list of the unique items that grant Spirit:

Ventor’s Gamble

ventors gamble

Ventor’s Gamble is one of the most popular rings in PoE1. It is quite a lucky item because it also seems to be the case in Path of Exile 2. Aside from granting a huge bonus to item rarity, the Ventor’s Gamble can roll up to 20 Spirit as well.

Take note that this is one of the most erratic unique items in the game. This is because most of its explicit modifier values can range from -40 to +40. If you’re able to hit +30%, consider yourself lucky!

Guiding Palm

guiding palm

GGG has created some of the most interesting unique items in Path of Exile 2. Guiding Palm actually has three variants that specialize in fire (Guiding Palm of the Heart), cold (Guiding Palm of the Eye), and lightning (Guiding Palm of the Mind), depending on the type you’ve chosen.

While its explicit modifiers don’t have anything to do with increasing your Spirit, its base is still a sceptre, meaning you get 100 Spirit nevertheless.

Chober Chaber

chober chaber

This next unique items is a bit interesting. You would think that a two-handed mace requires a copious amounts of STR to wield, right? However, the item we're going to talk about here actually requires you to have at least 100 INT to equip it.

I am talking about the Chober Chaber, of course! This weapon has the makings of a good leveling unique, where you take minion damage nodes along the way to bring some pain. However, because it's a two-handed weapon, its a hard sell for those die-hard minion enjoyers. Still, this is fun to experiment if you want to go against the grain.

Palm of the Dreamer

palm of the dreamer

Palm of the Dreamer does not grant a bonus to Spirit on its explicit modifiers. However, it does grant 100 base Spirit similar to the Guiding Palm.

You can acquire Palm of the Dreamer by corrupting any of the Guided Palm variants with a Vaal Orb.

Font of Power

font of power

Font of Power can roll up to 50% increased spirit, which is ideal for minion builds that require the services of a variety of subservient allies. Do not worry about its unique effect because it is negligible when you’re playing Path of Exile 2 solo.

The Dark Defiler

dark defiler

In case you don’t know, skills granted by items in PoE 2 do not reserve Spirit. Such is the case with the next unique item we’re going to discuss—The Dark Defiler.

The Dark Defiler is a unique sceptre that allows you to summon up to a level 20 Skeletal Warrior. However, its main selling point is that it grants 5% additional chaos damage for every undead minion you’ve summoned, the Skeletal Warrior included.

This sceptre’s unique effect is helpful when playing any Lich Minion Build in PoE 2. That is because the said ascendancy class has Necromantic Conduit, which grants extra chaos damage via Unholy Might. Be sure to use Arcanist's Etchers to improve the quality of the Skeletal Warrior minion.

Morior Invictus

morior invictus

In Path of Exile 2, certain pieces of gear can drop with sockets. One-handed weapons, helmets, boots, and gloves can each have one socket, while two-handed weapons and body armor can have two. The Morior Invictus is special because it is the only body armor in the game that drops with four rune sockets by default!

On top of that, the only common modifier on this body armor is that it increases your armor, evasion, and energy shield up to 300%. The other two modifiers can be anything and are amplified by every rune or soul core you have socketed into it.

Having said that, if you are going to purchase the Morior Invictus off of someone in PoE2 Trade, then be sure that it contains the mod: "+(6-10) to Spirit per Socket Filled."

If you want to take things to another level, you can use a Vaal Orb in the hopes of getting a fifth socket. This is a pretty risky move, but the payoff is massive, particularly when it comes to getting more Spirit!

Alpha’s Howl

alphas howl

The 100 Spirit provided by Alpha’s Howl is great and all, but another thing that makes this helmet awesome is that it increases the radius of some “presence skills.”

For example, Overwhelming Presence, which makes nearby enemies more susceptible to being affected by elemental ailments, now covers a much wider area with the Alpha’s Howl equipped.

Alpha’s Howl is now often used by the Tactician, especially those PoE 2 Tactician Builds that use Wolf Pack to create multiple wolf companions.

Enfolding Dawn

enfolding dawn

Completing three side quests during the campaign gives you a permanent 100 Spirit, right? However, you can only get that when you finish the third Interlude Act as well. What if you want to get 100 Spirit as soon as possible? If you are really that adamant, then the Enfolding Dawn is the right one for you.

It is a pretty good leveling unique for minion builds in PoE 2 despite not having increased mana per point of INT. Just make sure to replace it with better body armor, particularly in the later levels.

Pariah’s Embrace

pariahs embrace

Remember earlier in our PoE 2 Spirit Guide that Spirit’s main purpose is to activate certain buffs and minion skills? Pariah’s Embrace takes that up a notch by increasing the mana cost efficiency of skills by up to 40%, ensuring that you have plenty of mana to work with while having all of your Spirit Gems enabled without issues.

Beacon of Azis

beacon of azis

If you want to equip a Solar Amulet because it is the only item slot left in your inventory that can be used to make your PoE 2 build work, then we recommend the Beacon of Azis. This unique Solar Amulet increases your Spirit value by up to 45 points.

However, what makes the amulet incredible is that it ignores monster elemental resistances when your skills critically hit them.

Fun fact: the Beacon of Azis’ unique effect is the same as the Inquisitor’s Inevitable Judgement ascendancy node in PoE1.

Fireflower

fireflower

Spells in Path of Exile 2 gain a considerable damage boost every time their levels are increased. That said, the Fireflower has the potential to raise the level of all of the fire skills you have equipped by up to four, which translates to massive amounts of damage!

The Fireflower has the Solar Amulet as its base, so you still get anywhere between 10 to 15 flat points of Spirit. It does have one notable downside in that you take 100 fire damage when you Ignite an enemy. Fortunately, that can easily be addressed with high fire resistance and other forms of elemental damage mitigation.

Even though it is not as popular as the Beacon of Azis in the Rise of the Abyssals League, it is still a good option for PoE 2 minion builds that utilize the Skeletal Sniper and Skeletal Arsonist.

Ligurium Talisman

ligurium talisman

Do you miss the Zealot’s Oath keystone passive in Path of Exile 1? If so, you can equip the Ligurium Talisman, which literally has the same effect. That’s not the only thing you’re getting, though, because this amulet grants 35 Spirit, 30 Intelligence, and up to 40 energy shield on a perfect roll.

Interestingly, the Ligurium Talisman is being utilized by Lich Builds in Path of Exile 2, particularly those that utilize various minions as their primary damage dealers.

Against the Darkness

against the darkness

This is one of the most expensive unique items that gives Spirit in Path of Exile 2. Against the Darkness can roll with a wide variety of modifiers, but the one that you’re looking for is: “Notable passive skills in radius also grant + to Spirit.”

Best Notable Passive Skills in Path of Exile 2 Early Access are those that have slightly bigger icons compared to the travel nodes and minor nodes on the passive tree. To make good use of Against the Darkness, you have to put this in a jewel socket where you’ve taken a lot of these notable passives. So long as these passive skills are within the radius of this unique jewel, you will get however many Spirit it grants per node.

Against the Darkness, particularly with the bonus to Spirit, is a bit expensive right now at 10 Divine Orbs or more. This is because it can only be acquired from Zarokh, the Eternal, which is the alternate final boss of the Trial of Sekhemas.

In order to fight the said boss, you have to kill its base version named Zarokh, the Temporal. After the first encounter, the boss could drop The Desperate Alliance. Place this unique vase relic before initiating a Trial of the Sekhemas run for Zarokh to drop Against the Darkness, guaranteed. For a more detailed breakdown of this encounter and the mechanics inside the trial itself, you can refer to the PoE 2 [0.2.0] Trial of the Sekhemas Guide.

Given how difficult it is to get, let alone the specific modifier that you need, it’s understandable why this item is priced that way.

Gloamgown

gloamgown

The Gloamgown grants up to 40 Spirit and is a popular among Lich builds in PoE 2, particularly because of that greatly increased energy shield recharge rate.

Before you wear this body armor, though, you have to keep something in mind. Energy shield in PoE 2 typically has a delay of four seconds. This means that it only recharges if you do not take any damage for that specified amount of time.

With Gloamgown equipped, the energy shield recharge delay is 10 seconds instead of four. That is quite noticeable, which is why it is not popular among the ascendancy classes other than the Lich.

The reason why the Lich can benefit from Gloamgown is that she is almost immortal due to her “Eternal Life” ascendancy node. If you read its description, it says that life is not reduced whenever your energy shield is still up.

Still, Gloamgown’s unique effect is something you can experiment on with other ascendancy classes. Share your findings in the comments, we’d love to hear what you have come up with!

Sacrosanctum

sacrosanctum

Energy shield is still the most popular defensive layer in Path of Exile 2. It’s just better at mitigating damage than regular armor, and it can also be used as your pseudo-HP when allocating the Chaos Inoculation keystone passive.

That said, Sacrosanctum is a new unique body armor in the game that only grants up to 30 Spirit. For body armor, that is a bit on the low side. However, what it offers is something more than that.

You see, Sacrosanctum not only allows you to recoup 5-10% of the damage you receive as life, but it also allows you to recoup energy shield by the same percentage. This would have been even better if GGG had adjusted the time it takes for the recoup to take effect (it is currently at eight seconds).

Silks of Veneration

silks of veneration

On paper, the Silks of Veneration has everything going for it. It grants up to 50 Spirit and provides a 30-50% boost in energy shield recharge rate. However, this body armor’s main selling point is that it makes energy shield reduce the elemental damage you receive as well.

Silks of Veneration’s elemental damage reduction effect follows the armor formula of PoE 2, where the amount of energy shield you have is divided by the damage you received from a recent attack.

Even though it has a pretty powerful defensive effect, less than 1% of the population in the Rise of the Abyssals League ever use it. That is probably because there are better options out there.

Be that as it may, the Silks of Veneration is good for any minion build that hopes to survive a six-mod corrupted T15+ map.

Waveshaper

waveshaper

Remember what we said earlier about energy shield being the premier defensive layer in Path of Exile 2? Well, this next body armor we are going to talk about is pretty good at making sure your energy shield is topped up much sooner than later.

The Waveshaper has a unique effect that significantly boosts energy shield recharge rate based on your mana regeneration rate. That is why to maximize its power, you should increase your mana regeneration rate as best as you can.

That’s not all! When you have heaps of mana, you can also take advantage of the Waveshaper’s other unique effect. More specifically, you receive a boost in armor based on 30-50% of your maximum mana.

As of now, you can use the Waveshaper on the Essence Drain Contagion Lich to ensure that you won’t die on the battlefield.

Yriel’s Fostering

yriels fostering

One look at Yriel’s Fostering and you might get discouraged from using it due to its relatively low Spirit boost. However, that is not the main reason why GGG made it. The reason why it is added in the game is that it lets you summon two different companions at the same time.

Companions are a type of minion in Path of Exile 2. You can only tame beasts and turn them into companions if you deplete the beast’s HP low enough to be successful in doing so. What’s amazing about the companions is that they provide certain utilities and buffs depending on the type you have tamed.

The most common companions are the Quadrilla, Terracotta Soldier, and Diretusk Boar. That said, here are the usual modifiers to look for when taming a beast:

  • All Damage Shocks
  • Invulnerability Aura
  • Leaves Burning Ground When Moving
  • Physical Damage Aura
  • Haste Aura

While you can target-farm the Quadrilla and Diretusk Boar (by continuously “Reloading at Last Checkpoint” in the Trouble Camps in the Jungle Ruins and Infested Barrens, respectively), getting several of the above modifiers on one companion is quite rare (even almost impossible).

So, the best thing you can do is tame two different beasts with at least a couple of the mods mentioned above. After that, equip Yriel’s Fostering and summon them both at the same time.

Prism Guardian

prism guardian

In case you were not aware, the Oaksworn unique shield is now useless for minion builds in Path of Exile 2. The reason? It no longer grants Spirit!

Fortunately, GGG did not leave such builds hanging because there is a unique shield that replaces it. That shield is, of course, none other than the Prism Guardian.

The Prism Guardian works similarly to one of the Infernalist’s ascendancy nodes (Beidat’s Will), albeit it requires 50 points of HP for a single point of Spirit instead of 25 HP.

Ascendancy classes that can make great use of the Prism Guardian include the Lich, Blood Mage, and Infernalist. And yes, those are all Witch ascendancy classes in PoE 2!

Grand Spectrum (Emerald)

grand spectrum emerald

After equipping the other items that grant Spirit in Path of Exile 2, you should supplement them with the Grand Spectrum. If you don't know, there are three versions of the Grand Spectrum unique jewel, but what you're after is the Emerald, which gives you a 2% increase in Spirit per Grand Spectrum inserted into your jewel sockets.

The Grand Spectrum (Emerald) is mainly used by Minion Infernalist builds that wants to summon a pretty sizable minion army. Take note that Grand Spectrum jewels, in general, are pretty expensive. Fortunately, you can buy Grand Spectrum from our PoE 2 Store at a very affordable price.

The Unborn Lich

unborn lich

Previous PoE 2 expansions have introduced "Desecrated Modifiers" to the game, which are essentially mods that can only be obtained by doing the Abyss Mechanic.

That said, The Unborn Lich can have a custom set of desecrated mods, including "+(40-60) to Spirit" and "(6-10)% Increased Spirit Reservation Efficiency of Skills." You have a high chance of getting this particular mod when you choose Amanamu's Fracturing during the Vessel of Kulemak encounter.

amanamus fracturing

Undying Hate

undying hate

This next unique item is one that you can put in a jewel socket on your passive tree. Undying Hate transforms all of the passive nodes within its radius into special "Abyssal Nodes" that provide entirely different bonuses. You want to look for a specific Undying Hate jewel that transforms one of your notable passive skills into "Spiritkeeper."

Spiritkeeper is an abyssal node that increases your Spirit by 8% if you have at least 100 Tribute. Because you need a substantial amount of Tribute for Spiritkeeper to work, make sure to place Undying Hate in a jewel socket that has plenty of allocated nodes in its radius.

Unique Items That Affect Spirit in PoE 2

These items don't necessarily grant bonuses to Spirit, though they do affect them in one way or another. We feel that it is nice to include them just in case you want to take on a different route with your PoE 2 build.

Kaom's Heart

kaoms heart

Kaom's Heart returns in Path of Exile 2 with a slightly different effect. It still provides you with a huge increase in life (+1500 HP), but the major difference here is that you effectively have zero Spirit with the body armor equipped.

With such a huge downside, you might think that this unique item is not going to be popular. Well, Kaom's Heart is great for life-stacking builds or those who want to reach upwards of 5,000 HP.

So, if you want to create a build that finds no use for Spirit, then Kaom's Heart is a good option.

Matsya

matsya

Matsya is a good leveling unique for the monk. This thing does not provide you with any Spirit, though it does significantly reduce the Spirit reservation of skills. This enables you to add one support gem with at least 30 Spirit (after killing King in the Mists in Act 1).

This thing got even better because it now deals flat cold and lightning damage, allowing you to Freeze and Shock enemies when enough damage is dealt, respectively. You could use it as a leveling unique when creating the Storm Wave Invoker build, for example.

Threaded Light

threaded light

Spellcasters like the Infernalist and Stormweaver will find the Threaded Light beneficial to their cause. This unique item grants up to 12% increased spell damage for every 10 points of Spirit.

Interestingly, Invokers and Amazon Builds have also been seen using the Threaded Light in Path of Exile 2 for early-game leveling. This is mainly paired with another unique item called the Crown of Eyes, which makes the devastating effect of spell damage apply to attacks as well.

The Threaded Light is best utilized in conjunction with a sceptre that has a "% Increased Spirit" mod to ensure that wielders will get a huge boost in spell damage.

Grip of Kulemak

grip of kulemak

The Grip of Kulemak is a ring that can roll a bunch of desecrated mods. Find a specific one that says "1% Increased Attack/Cast Speed per 20 Spirit" if you intend to use this unique ring for your build.

Keep in mind that the said mod does not affect your minions at all. That's why you equip the Grip of Kulemak with the specific modifier only when your build encourages a hybrid playstyle (both as a minion commander and attacker/spellcaster).

Currency Items That Affect or Interact with Spirit

Some PoE 2 currency items also grant a bit of Spirit. There are only a couple of them that you need to know, but GGG might add more items in the future.

Soul Core of Azcapa

soul core of azcapa

The Soul Core of Azcapa can be acquired as a random reward from the Trial of Chaos. In case you haven't played Path of Exile 2 yet, the Trial of Chaos is quite similar to the Ultimatum Encounter in PoE1, albeit more challenging than ever before.

Having said that, the Soul Core of Azcapa can give a small boost in Spirit when socketed into martial weapons. If you're not aware, martial weapons in PoE2 are those that are not wands, staves, or sceptres.

Amanamu's Gaze

amanamus gaze

Amanamu's Gaze is a socketable item in Path of Exile 2, which you can obtain from the Abyssal Depths. What's cool about this thing is that it grants a different effect depending on where you insert it. If you put it into body armor, you gain +2 to armor for every point of Spirit that you have. If inserted into boots, Amanamu's Gaze boosts your movement speed by 1% per 15 Spirit.

This nifty socketable item works best for minion builds or those that have high amounts of Spirit since Amanamu's Gaze can scale from that particular resource.

Vaal Orb

vaal orb

The Vaal Orb in Path of Exile 2 is quite an interesting currency item because it can do a lot of things. For instance, when you use it to corrupt a helmet or a scepter, it can potentially grant Spirit as a corrupted modifier.

Take note that using Vaal Orbs is an unreliable way of gaining Spirit. However, if you have plenty of them lying around and you have items that you don't mind corrupting, then by all means!

Patch 0.5.0 New Spirit Items

Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients has added new items that grant additional Spirit via Patch 0.5.0. They are:

New Uniques in Patch 0.5.0

Sylvan’s Effigy

sylvans effigy

Sylvan’s Effigy is a very powerful new unique item in Patch 0.5.0 that allows the wielder to have more than one Companion active at a time, so long as they are of different types. This is great for the new Spirit Walker ascendancy class, especially her ability to empower and boost the damage of companions in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients.

In addition, this unique sceptre grants a new skill that lets the wielder summon Azmerian Wolves to fight by their side. This, in conjunction with the Spirit Walker’s animal spirits, makes an interesting minion build in PoE 2.

The Raven’s Flock

ravens flock

While this next unique item does not provide any Spirit, it does increase the Spirit reservation efficiency of skills (allowing you to activate more buffs). The Raven’s Flock is ideal for minion builds, specifically those that focus on its innate skill called “Spiraling Conspiracy,” which calls forth a Raven to join the flock for every 1.05-2 seconds you are in the presence of a rare or unique enemy.

New Items That Grant Spirit in Patch 0.5.0

Emergent Vigour

emergent vigour

On the surface, the Emergent Vigour does not provide you with any Spirit at all. However, when you play the Shaman ascendancy class with the “Wisdom of the Maji” node allocated, you will gain +20 to Spirit from Emergent Vigour when you insert it into a helmet.

Carved Majesty

carved majesty

Carved Majesty is a new augment in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients that provides three points of Spirit for every idol you have inserted into your equipment. This bonus is improved when using the Shaman’s Wisdom of the Maji, because it provides an additional 5% increased Spirit.

Rune of the Blossom

rune of the blossom

Rune of the Blossom is a good rune for leveling a minion build in Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients. It provides +50 Spirit upfront, but then scales down slowly every two levels. You might want to start using it at level 15 if you can afford one, because it becomes weak when you reach level 40.

Updated Spirit Items in Patch 0.5.0

Soul Mantle

soul mantle

The Soul Mantle has improved in Patch 0.5.0. This unique body armor no longer reduces the life of your totems by a certain percentage. Instead, it now grants a flat 75-point increase to your Spirit. This is handy, especially when you take the Ancestral Bond keystone, which now also lets you summon a totem by spending 75 Spirit.

Rabbit Idol

rabbit idol

Formerly known as the Rabbit Talisman, the Rabbit Idol also got buffed in Patch 0.5.0. It now increases the total Spirit value of sceptres by 15% (up from 10%). However, it is important to note that you can now only use one Rabbit Idol on your PoE 2 build. Still, it is a fair compromise, given that you can use the Rabbit Idol on a crafted Sceptre with high amounts of Spirit.

Ascendancy Nodes and Passive Skills That Grant Spirit in PoE 2

The Infernalist, Invoker, Tactician, and the Spirit Walker have nodes on their respective ascendancy trees that grant some Spirit in Path of Exile 2.

When playing the Infernalist, you can take Beidat's Will. Getting this ascendancy node will reserve 25% of your life. In return, you are getting a 1-point increase in Spirit per 25 points of maximum HP. If you are going to allocate your ascendancy points into Beidat's Will, make sure to raise your maximum life as high as you can.

The Invoker's "Lead Me Through Grace…" ascendancy node significantly increases your Spirit based on how much evasion and energy shield your body armor has. To get the most out of this ascendancy node, craft body armor with flat and percentage increases to energy shield and evasion.

Unlike the other two ascendancy classes just mentioned, the Tactician does not have a particular major node that grants Spirit. Instead, he can gain an 8% increased Spirit just by taking the small travel node towards "A Solid Plan."

For the Spirit Walker, the small travel node that connects to Idolatry grant +10 Spirit. While this is a small amount, it is still useful if you want to add Clarity or Precision as part of your persistent buffs.

Aside from ascendancy classes, GGG added a new cluster of passive skills that increases your Spirit by a total of 8%. This cluster has a notable passive skill called Profane Commander that also increases your presence area of effect by 30%.

The good news is that Profane Commander is actually near the other minion-related passive skills on the tree, such as Crystalline Flesh, Restless Dead, and Growing Swarm. If you want to summon even more minions to fight for you, consider getting Profane Commander and the small nodes that connect to it.

How to Get More Spirit in PoE 2: Tips

  • Do the Side Quests: When creating a fresh character in Path of Exile 2, always complete the three side quests that reward Spirit-boosting items. After all, it's a free 100 Spirit, so why not grab it?
  • Get a good Sceptre: The most realistic way to get Spirit in PoE 2, especially if you need a lot of it, is to obtain a rare sceptre with 50% increased Spirit or more. The good thing about doing this is that the said weapon type can also roll with minion modifiers, such as "+ to level of all minion skills," and "allies in your presence deal % increased damage."
  • How to Search for Against the Darkness: If you want to buy Against the Darkness that specifically grants Spirit on the trade website, there is an easy way to get what you need. When you arrive at the trade website, click "+ Add Stat Filter" under the Stat Filters group. Once you can type on it, press the tilde key (~) and type "notable passive skills Spirit." Doing so will immediately show you the necessary modifier and remove all of the other Against the Darkness jewels in the search results. If you are wondering what the tilde key does, it simply lets you type anything without copying the entire modifier's phrase word for word.
  • Gain 450+ Spirit in the Endgame: Even without the most expensive unique items mentioned in this PoE 2 Spirit Guide, 450 Spirit is still quite accessible, particularly for minion builds. Get a Sceptre with at least 50% increased Spirit for starters. Then, grab a Solar Amulet and Body Armor with 50 Spirit each. When playing the Infernalist ascendancy class, make sure that you have plenty of life so that you can take advantage of Beidat's Will.
  • Get Reduced Spirit Reservation from Passive Tree: Minions and herald skills take the bulk of your Spirit when they're activated. To ensure that they don't eat up much of your Spirit, you can take certain nodes on the passive tree to reduce their reservation requirements. For minions, you can allocate Lord of Horrors located at the top-left portion of the tree. To reduce Spirit reservation for herald skills, take Fate Finding, which is found at the bottom-left corner of the passive tree.

Best Gear Sources for More Spirit

  • Sceptres: These are the best sources for more Spirit. Aside from granting +100 Spirit right off the bat, sceptres can have additional explicit modifiers that grant even more Spirit.
  • Body Armor: Your chest armor is another good source for Spirit in PoE 2. In the endgame, you’ll want to get an ilvl 78+ body armor because it can roll up to +61 Spirit.
  • Solar Amulets: Not only does Solar Amulets give up to +15 Spirit (as an implicit mod), it can also roll up to +50 Spirit as an explicit modifier.

FAQ

What is Spirit Used for in PoE 2?

Spirit is primarily used for activating persistent buffs and auras in Path of Exile 2. This resource was created to address the issue in the original game, where mana was also used to enable auras (leaving you with only a measly amount of mana for your active skills).

How Do You Get More Spirit in PoE 2?

You can get 100 Spirit from completing a few side quests during the campaign. After that, additional Spirit can be gained from wearing certain items, such as rare body armor with some Spirit mods or unique items that expressly provide the said resource.

Did Patch 0.5.0 Change Spirit in PoE 2?

No, Patch 0.5.0 did not implement anything that would change Spirit in a fundamental way. It did, however, introduce new items that grant Spirit, including Sylvan’s Effigy, Emergent Vigour, and so much more.

What Pieces of Gear Give Spirit in PoE 2?

You’ll want to invest in sceptres and body armor because they provide huge amounts of Spirit for just two gear slots. The Solar Amulet is also good, provided that you have one that has +50 Spirit as an explicit mod.

How to Get Spirit in PoE 2: Final Thoughts

Spirit in Path of Exile 2 is a great way to activate ongoing buffs and permanent minions without sacrificing mana, similar to the old system in PoE 1. There are affordable items that grant Spirit, such as the sceptre, solar amulet, and body armor. However, you need to obtain the more expensive ones, like Against the Darkness in the endgame, especially if you want to summon 25 minions or more.
