D4 unique items are pieces of gear or jewelry that have powers that can provide huge boosts in damage or utility. In some cases, uniques are build-defining, where a build cannot perform its best without them.

Which Lair Boss Should You Farm in Diablo 4?

You can target specific lair bosses in the game in order to obtain uniques that your D4 build needs. For instance, the Waxing Gibbous, which is a necessary weapon for the Storm Shred Druid, has a considerable chance to drop from Lord Zir.

Take note that you might not have the specific unique item that you want to drop for you on the first try, so you need to do several runs until you get it. Besides that, you actually need keys to open the hoard chests that spawn after defeating the lair boss.

In the current season of Diablo 4, you need a few different keys, depending on the lair boss you are farming. These are:

• Lair Keys: Used to open hoard chests from Grigoire, Varshan, Lord Zir, Urivar, and Beast in the Ice.
• Greater Lair Keys: This is necessary for opening the hoard chests from Duriel, Andariel, The Butcher, and the Harbinger of Hatred.
• Superior Lair Keys: These keys have replaced the Betrayer’s Husks from the prior seasons in Diablo 4. The Superior Lair Key is needed to open the hoard chests from Belial and The Corrupted Reaper.

Unlike other D4 Lair Bosses, Belial has a special drop pool, where the uniques that you will get depend entirely on the lair boss reward you have selected upon interacting with the hoard chest.

For example, if you choose Bartuc, you will get the unique items that normally drop from the said lair boss’s item pool.

These D4 unique items can be obtained as random loot from defeating monsters or via the Horadric Cube:

The Horadric Cube Recipe, where you convert a Normal Item into a Unique Item, may result in one of the uniques that you could target-farm from lair bosses. For instance, you might obtain a Gohr’s Devastating Grips for your Barbarian Build if you are lucky. Now, if you don’t have the necessary materials to use the Horadric Cube Recipe, then taking out the lair bosses is the best way to obtain the unique item that you want.

Current Season Notes

Season 14 has introduced the Mythics 3.0 System in Diablo 4. Basically, every unique item can now be a “Mythic Unique Item” if you use a certain Horadric Cube Recipe. This recipe involves a unique item (of at least 850 Power) and 5 Pandemonium Fragments.

Take note that Mythics created this way are considered “crafted,” which means that you are only limited to wearing one piece on your character at all times. Blizzard might change this in a future update, since a lot of people are complaining about this severe limitation.

Alternatively, Mythic Uniques can drop from lair bosses as well. Your chances of obtaining a Mythic Unique Item from them increase whenever you defeat them in higher Torment Difficulties. If you have acquired Mythic Uniques by target-farming lair bosses, these items do not count toward the limit, so you can wear as many as your gear slots permit.

The Mythic Items prior to Season 14, such as the Harlequin’s Crest, Ring of Starless Skies, and The Grandfather, are now called “Iconic Mythic Items.” They are much rarer now because of the fact that other Mythic Uniques populate the item pool significantly.

What is the Best Boss to Farm Mythic Uniques?

Mythic Uniques can now drop from any lair boss in Diablo 4. However, Belial is the best boss to farm Mythic Unique Items, mainly because you can influence the items that drop from his hoard chest.

Still, it is worth noting that unique items are subject to RNG. You may or may not get lucky when you open the lair boss chests. Good luck!

Do I Need to Be in Torment Difficulty to Get Uniques from Lair Bosses?

Yes. You have to be in Torment I at least, though your chance of acquiring a desired unique item increases at higher difficulty levels.

How Have Unique Items Changed in the Current Season?

This season has introduced the Mythics 3.0 System, where all unique items in the game can either drop as “Mythic Uniques” or be crafted to achieve the same effect. Take note that doing the latter limits you to only one Mythic Unique on your character, so you are still incentivized to go target-farming for the uniques that your build needs if you want to use more.
