How have you been enjoying Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred so far? If you ask me, I have been having a blast, especially with the new Barbarian Builds that truly obliterate everything in this game.
While many players enjoy the new content introduced in Season of Reckoning, there are some who have not yet tried the Echoing Hatred event. That is not because they don’t want to; it’s just that the necessary thing that they must have in their possession is one of the rarest D4 items in existence.
So in this article, I will go over what Echoing Hatred is, especially how it works, the best builds to use, and other bits of information that you should know before heading in.
What is the Echoing Hatred Event in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred?
Echoing Hatred is an in-game event in Diablo 4: Season of Reckoning, where you are placed inside a relatively small map. Here, you will have to fight endless hordes of monsters, with each wave being harder than the last.
Accessing the Arena: The Trace of Echoes

Unlike the other endgame activities in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, you cannot readily access the Echoing Hatred event by simply interacting with an object. You must first have the Trace of Echoes in your possession, which is a rare drop from defeating monsters or completing dungeons. And when I say it’s a “rare drop,” I mean it in the strictest sense!
You see, I’ve only gotten one Trace of Echoes since the start of Season 13, and I haven’t acquired another one yet. It is that rare.
I found mine while doing a Nightmare Dungeon in Torment 10 within the War Plans. Others have luck completing The Undercity in Torment 8 and above. I suggest that you begin in Torment 8 and work your way up until you have the right D4 Talismans for your build.

How to Get In the Echoing Hatred Event
When you have found a Trace of Echoes, picking it up will automatically give you the quest called “The Resounding Scream.” Go to Temis and talk to Seer Nevma. She is located a bit to the left of The Undercity brazier.
Seer Nevma tells you that she has been hearing the voices of Hell’s legions after Mephisto was defeated. It goes without saying that the Echoing Hatred event can only be accessed once you have finished the Lord of Hatred campaign.
Once Nevma is done talking, she tells you to put the Sightless Eye on the pedestal just beside the seer. Click on the pedestal to place the Sightless Eye, and a short cutscene will commence. You are going to be transported to another map after that.

Before anything, the Trace of Echoes does not stack, which means that if you do obtain one, you have to use it as soon as possible. Otherwise, you won’t have another Trace of Echoes drop, even if you spend countless hours enjoying Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred.
The Battle Begins—The Echoing Hatred Proper
When you arrive in the area, you will find that there are four shrines situated at various points of the map. Before the fight begins, I highly recommend that you visit these shrines so you know exactly where you should be headed when the time comes.
The shrines in question are:
- Channeling Shrine
- Lethal Shrine
- Artillery Shrine
- Protection Shrine
You can safely get the first three shrines on that list at any point during the Echoing Hatred event in D4 Season 13. However, save the Protection Shrine when you reach Tier 50 and above.
The Echoing Hatred literally pits you against an unlimited number of monsters, separated by waves. Each wave represents a tier of difficulty. You’ll begin at Normal Difficulty and end at Torment 12. The rest of the monsters from that point onward will have the same stats as the T12 monsters you fight outside the area, so do come prepared for the fight.
It is also important to note that bosses will spawn in various waves. In my experience, a boss spawned for me at wave 25, wave 50, and wave 60. I stopped at wave 65 because I already got bored, but you can certainly keep going if you want to.
With the way this endgame activity is designed, you have to be willing to spend an hour or so to maximize your entry into the Echoing Hatred. I think that the rarity of the Trace of Echoes is to emphasize the point that the Echoing Hatred event is a valuable thing that you should do in terms of your season progress.
Echoing Hatred Rewards
There are certain milestones that you can hit when you participate in the Echoing Hatred event in Diablo 4 Season 13. After finishing wave 24, a boss called the “Flotsam” will appear. Defeating it rewards you with a free portal MTX that you can use on all of your characters.
My personal favorite, however, is a cute pet that is actually called “The Crab with the Knife.” Don’t be deceived by its cuteness because it may rob you while you sleep!

Anyway, the cute crab pet can only be yours if you finish at least wave 60. After that, a milestone is completed, and you should receive the reward shortly after.

Best Builds for D4 Echoing Hatred
Do you want to know what builds you should use to survive the endless hordes of monsters in the Echoing Hatred? Well, here’s a brief list:
- Whirlwind Barbarian: The Whirlwind Barb is an S-Tier build in D4 Season 13 and is perfect for Echoing Hatred. This build breathed new life with the skill tree changes in Season 13, particularly the “Tornado” upgrade, which lets Whirlwind create two devastating Dust Devils that can destroy any monster they encounter. This build is also tanky, so much so that it can survive Pit Level 150 and higher.
- Penetrating Shot Rogue: While not as tanky as the previous build, the Penetrating Shot Rogue relies on pure offense anyway. This build can fill the screen of arrows with the help of these things called “Shades,” which fire Penetrating Shot whenever you do. Equipping the Eaglehorn bow forces the Penetrating Shot arrows to bounce off walls, thus contributing to the “screen-clearing” effect.
- Apocalypse Warlock: This is the build I ran with when I entered the Echoing Hatred. It is squishy, but it can be solved by equipping the Endurant Faith (unique charm). The Apocalypse Warlock can hit all enemies at once, particularly when Apocalypse gains 100 stacks for maximum damage and AoE. This is valuable, even more so at higher waves.
- Companion Druid: If you like a minion build that is sturdy enough to reach wave 100 or higher, then the Companion Druid is a good choice. This makes use of lightning-infused Wolves that deal tremendous damage to any monster they bite. Plus, you have other minions at your disposal, especially when you equip the “Accord of the Wilds” unique ring.
- Blizzard Sorcerer: Builds that do tons of AoE damage are definitely awesome in the Echoing Hatred event. The new Blizzard Sorcerer is a top contender in this regard. It makes use of a different kind of Blizzard—one that actually deals lightning damage thanks to its “Static Field” upgrade. You supplement that with Fractured Winterglass and Raiment of the Sea, and you have a build that fills the entire screen with a surge of lightning that electrocutes anything within range.
Echoing Hatred Tips
- The Trace of Echoes is hard to obtain. However, completing activities within a high-level War Plans seems to greatly increase your chances of finding one. Focus on Nightmare Dungeons and The Undercity, but you may have success with Helltides as well.
- Use a build that has a good area of effect skill. The Apocalypse Warlock is one of the best, but if you find it to be too clunky because of the setups that have to be made, then you can go for the Blizzard Sorcerer or Whirlwind Barbarian.
- Devote at least an hour to this activity because the more highly coveted rewards won’t be yours until after wave 60.
- Scour the area and take note of the locations of the shrines. This will come in handy, especially in later waves where monsters become incredibly difficult for some builds.
- It’s fun to do the Echoing Hatred event with a full party, so group up with your mates before heading in.
FAQ
Should I Do All Side Quests Before I Can Get the Trace of Echoes to Drop?
No, you don’t need to do any of the side quests in the Lord of Hatred campaign. You do, however, need to finish the campaign because the point of the Echoing Hatred is to defeat Hell’s Legions that are screaming after you’ve banished Mephisto himself.
Is Echoing Hatred Repeatable?
Of course! The only hurdle is that you have to farm the Trace of Echoes, which has been established as an item that is incredibly difficult to find.
Can I Do Echoing Hatred with a Party?
Yes. Standard party rules apply, which means that you can participate in the event with a group of four members in total. In other words, this activity has been designed to be done either solo or in a group.
How Do I End the Run?
You will end the Echoing Hatred event if you get yourself killed. If you’re not playing the best D4 builds in Season 13, chances are you’ll be dead before wave 25 commences.
