Diablo 4 , Game Guides

Seven days in, and the community is already having a blast with the latest expansion, Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. The campaign is definitely something that you should experience for yourself, and the addition of the War Plans and Horadric Cube makes it easy to acquire amazing D4 items in the endgame.
But how about the Warlock? Some argue that the latest class in the game is clunky to play. Although that may be true in some cases, the Warlock is actually fun and engaging, especially if you know which build to run.
So in today's article, I am going to help you with that. I am going to go over the best Warlock builds in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, specifically those that have been topping the charts a week after the expansion's launch. Let's get started!
Warlock Class Overview
The Warlock is a demon-binding class in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred that is a marriage between a caster and a minion commander. However, before you have any thoughts that this demon-binding class replaces the Sorcerer and Necromancer, I am here to tell you that the Warlock is quite unique.
You see, while the Warlock can indeed summon minions, it only uses them as a means to an end (and by "end," I mean kill the enemy). Furthermore, the Warlock's minions are only temporary, in the sense that they only stay on the battlefield for a limited period and then go away. You'd have to press the appropriate skill again to avail of their services.
Having said that, the most useful fragments out of the Warlock's Soul Shard System to date are the Mastermind and the Ritualist. The former is great in boosting the damage of Abyss Skills (like Dread Claws and Terror Swarm), while the latter increases the damage of Occult Hellfire skills, with Valloch paying the life cost of casting such abilities.
Yes, there is a bit of clunkiness in playing the Warlock, but that's largely because you'd have to cast more than one skill to truly get the best out of the said class. So, if you like high-APM gameplay, then playing the Warlock is highly encouraged in D4 Season of Reckoning.
Best Warlock Starter Build: Dread Claws Warlock
Among the Warlock Builds that are viable in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, the Dread Claws Warlock is the best out there. This is because this build handles the campaign really well. It is also able to function properly without specific D4 uniques, though it could certainly use some later on if you want to continue with the said build.
Now, there are a couple of variants to this build, mainly differing in what specific Dread Claws upgrade you want to use. If you want to force Dread Claws to become a good AoE skill, then you should go for the "Encircling Terror" upgrade. Using Dread Claws with Encircling Terror will cause the claws to attack in an area around you all at once.
If you prefer the default Dread Claws but slightly more powerful, then choose the "Cascading Dread" upgrade instead. This will create more claws that attack the enemy, with each claw dealing more damage than the previous ones.
It is important to note that while the Dread Claws Warlock can be played in the endgame, the build does require certain D4 uniques to achieve its full potential. These unique items are:
- Litany of Sable: Boosts the damage of Dread Claws. Also created additional claws that attack the enemy when you have stacks of Shadowform.
- Night Terror: A unique amulet that provides a stacking damage buff for Dread Claws based on the number of Shadowform stacks that you have.
- Endurant Faith (Unique Charm): Charms can now be fashioned from unique items in Season of Reckoning. That said, Endurant Faith greatly improves the survivability of the Dread Claws Warlock and is a mandatory addition to the endgame version for sure.

Best Warlock Endgame Build: Apocalypse Warlock
Once you've played the Dread Claws Warlock build and have gotten some good equipment, then you can transition to the overall best endgame build for the Warlock: the Apocalypse Warlock.
Also known as the "Hellscream Warlock" build, the Apocalypse Warlock is one that can truly decimate any monster in the game, with heavy fire damage that they cannot escape. It's like playing a build that can literally make enemies feel what it's like being charred in Hell!
The key to this build is Apocalypse—an ultimate skill available to the Warlock that creates a large sigil on the ground that explodes after a couple of seconds, dealing huge amounts of fire damage.
The problem with Apocalypse, however, is that it has a substantially long cooldown. That's why this build also needs Umbral Chains, specifically with its "Chains Whips" upgrade, to turn it into a Hellfire Skill. Once this is done, enemies that are hit by Umbral Chains give a stack to Apocalypse. When you have 20 stacks, you can cast Apocalypse without having to wait a long period of time for the skill to become available.
Now, the reason why this is only viable in the endgame is that it requires certain unique items to flourish. These are:
- Hands of the Worldbreaker: These are unique gloves that pretty much enable this build to destroy anything in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. The Hands of the Worldbreaker heavily increase the damage output of Apocalypse. 'Nuff said.
- The Hemat Stone: This increases the potency of the Overpower stacks provided by Valloch, effectively increasing the damage of your Occult Skills (such as Doom, Umbral Chains, and Apocalypse).
- Fleshwrit Carapace: The Fleshwrit Carapace is another damage buff that works in tandem with the other unique items just mentioned. However, you have to use a particular set of Charms to unlock its power, which I will go over in the next sections.
Skill Tree Allocation
- Doom (lvl 1) -> Doomfire Ritual
- Wrath
- Assimilation
- Umbral Chains -> Chain Whips
- Wrath Refund
- Long Range Slow
- Dark Prison (lvl 1) -> Chain Aura
- Weaken
- Fortify
- Nether Step
- Damage Reduction
- Movement Speed
- Sigil of Subversion (lvl 1) -> Infiltration Trails
- Movement Speed
- Slow
- Sigil of Chaos -> Hellfire Aura
- Volatility Duration
- Volatility Casts
- Apocalypse -> Annihilation
- Survivor Damage
- Double Blast
Soul Shard
- Ritualist -> Scorching Fragment: Empowers Apocalypse to always deal more damage. Any life costs associated with the empowerment are paid in full by Valloch. Using Command Valloch also fortifies you, upping your defense against enemies in higher Torment Difficulties.
Paragons and Glyphs
- Entropy Glyph
- Pyrosis + Empowered Glyph
- Ritualism + Unbound Glyph
- Greater Hex + Hellforge Glyph
- Chaos + Occultist Glyph
Talismans and Charms
- Rite of the Nameless Set: Pretty much mandatory for the build to function properly. The Rite of the Nameless is a collection of Charms in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred that makes Sigil Skills (like Apocalypse, Sigil of Subversion, and Sigil of Chaos) deal more damage. It also has the added benefit of casting all Sigil Skills (in their base forms) all at once.
- Endurant Faith: This particular unique charm becomes incredibly useful in the late game, especially because the damage that would kill you in one hit is instead distributed over 4 seconds. Plus, the damage you receive is reduced by up to 40%, depending on the roll on the Endurant Faith that you have.
Horadric Cube Crafting Tips for Warlocks
- If you have an Ancestral version of Endurant Faith, save it for later use. Once you have three unique charms, an Enhanced Primordial Dust, along with 50 Raw Primordial Dust and 100 Infused Resin, you can place all of these ingredients into the cube to create an Endurant Faith charm.
- The Endurant Faith Charm solves any issues you may have with survivability, so be sure to get that one as soon as you can.
- The Rite of the Nameless Set is mandatory for the Apocalypse Warlock. Hence, you should use the "Reroll Set Charm" crafting recipe from the Horadric Cube. This is to reroll parts of the set in your possession into pieces that you still don't have. For example, if you have two Fer of the Nameless charms, you can use the Reroll Set Charm feature to get, say, a Phoba of the Nameless.
- If you plan on making the Apocalypse Warlock build in the future, save a pair of white gloves (Common Rarity) for later use. You can put those gloves into the Horadric Cube, and it may turn into the Hands of the Worldbreaker with the "Upgrade to Unique" crafting recipe.
