New Content and Features in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred

The next Diablo 4 expansion is stacked, to say the least. In the next sections, I will go over the things that you can expect when you get D4: Lord of Hatred now or until its eventual release on April 28, 2026.

New Class: The Paladin

Diablo 4 Paladin class reveal

If you are going to ask me if Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred is worth the price, this new class alone warrants the price of admission for sure! When you pre-order your copy of the expansion, you will immediately have access to the warrior of Zakarum, the Paladin!

That’s right! The Paladin has returned in Diablo 4 as a complete warrior of light, able to utilize helpful auras, while also destroying the minions of Hell with holy-infused hammers, spears, and shields!

The Paladin is topping the charts in Season 11, with the Auradin leading the charge. The Auradin is a build that is meant for people who do not want to spam several buttons just to destroy the enemy.

If you are wondering where its power comes from, most of it is from the Dawnfire gloves. This makes the Holy Light Aura deal fire damage in an area around you. This effect passes onto your allies as well, so you can utilize the Ceh Rune to summon wolves, effectively extending the range of the Holy Light Aura.

Of course, who could forget the Blessed Hammer Paladin? The “Hammerdin” uses the Blessed Hammer to conjure holy hammers that spin around you. How this skill is different from its D2R implementation is that the hammers not only deal so much damage, but also move quickly (addressing the longstanding issue that the hammers feel clunky after being summoned).

Additionally, you will use a couple of different unique items in order to maximize the hammer’s effect. Herald’s Morningstar is a one-handed mace that greatly increases the damage of the Blessed Hammer. Furthermore, the Argent Veil lets you summon a Blessed Hammer whenever you evade while in Arbiter Form.

In Diablo 4, each class has its own unique properties, and the Paladin is no different. Whenever you play as the Paladin and have reached level 15, you will be able to take on a mini-quest that unlocks various “Oaths.”

The Paladin’s class mechanic lets you change the way some of its skills work. For example, when you use the “Disciple Oath,” using a Disciple Skill like Blessed Hammer grants the Arbiter buff for several seconds. During this time, the damage of your Disciple Skills deal 50% increased damage, which performs admirably well with other damage-boosting modifiers on your D4 gear and accessories.

Another New Class

Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred new class teaser

The Paladin is not the only class that is available to you in the Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred expansion. Come April 26, there is also a new class that you can choose, though details about this particular one have not been revealed yet.

There are so many speculations as to what the upcoming class is going to be. However, I think there are several very plausible ones that I will discuss in a moment.

The first assumption is that the second class you’ll get from purchasing the Lord of Hatred expansion is the Blood Knight. First introduced in the mobile port Diablo Immortal, the Blood Knight is the most likely answer, given the prominent spikes that grow off the shoulder in the character’s silhouette.

Aside from the Blood Knight, the D4 community has speculated that the second class could be either the Demon Hunter or the Witch Doctor. I think the Demon Hunter is not the most likely option simply because it clashes with the Rogue (because both have very similar skills and playstyles).

The Witch Doctor is a beloved class in Diablo III, and its arrival in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred is a possibility. Given these assumptions, there might be a fourth option, and that is the Amazon.

Why the Amazon Class, you ask? Well, that is because the newest region that will be introduced in the game is the Skovos Isles. If you’re familiar with the Diablo II Lore, the Skovos Isles are home to the Amazon Tribe. Now, the only reason why this isn’t what people expect is that, well, it would’ve been the most obvious, isn’t it? I mean, the Skovos Isles = Amazon, right?

The real answer as to the identity of the second class will be revealed once Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred expansion is released later this year.

New Campaign

A new expansion always comes with a new campaign. In Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, you will visit the Skovos Isles, which is not only home to the Amazon Tribe, but it is also the original homeland of both Inarius and Lilith. Something tells me that Lilith plays a huge role in defeating Mephisto for good in this expansion, so that would be interesting to see how it all plays out.

New Boss: Mephisto

Diablo 4 Mephisto boss Lord of Hatred

If you are going to name an expansion after a Prime Evil, then you should make him the big baddie, right? Fortunately, that is going to be the case in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred.

Mephisto looks vastly different from his form in D2R. He now dons a scarier look, which is befitting of the Lord of Hatred. The question now is, what happens when you finally defeat him? Will this ultimately lead you to fight the Lord of Terror, Diablo himself?

Horadric Cube

Horadric Cube Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred

The Horadric Cube returns in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred! For those who have not played the second installment in the franchise, the Horadric Cube is a popular item that lets you transmute mediocre items into more valuable ones.

In Diablo 2, there was a quest that allowed you to get your hands on the Horadric Cube, so I’d imagined that Blizzard would do the same thing in Diablo 4. This quest will most likely be set in the Skovos Isles since this is the new region you can explore in the game.

It would be interesting to see how the Horadric Cube differs from its D2R equivalent. You see, some Horadric Cube recipes would enable you to upgrade your low-tier jewels into their flawless variants. However, what else can it do, exactly?

Hopefully, the Horadric Cube lets you upgrade your non-ancestral legendary item into its more powerful Ancestral Legendary version somehow. Perhaps Blizzard can introduce an entirely new feature that only the Horadric Cube is capable of. Let’s get our fingers crossed for this one!

Talisman

Talisman

In the previous installments in the franchise, you can equip set items or pieces of gear that are part of a particular collection. For instance, the Tal Rasha’s Wrappings are comprised of five different items that, when equipped, provide the following bonuses:

  • +3 to Sorceress Skills
  • 25% Faster Hit Recovery
  • +150 Defense
  • +150 Life
  • +50% to All Resistances
  • 65% Magic Find

The set bonuses are applied on top of whatever modifiers are found on the individual pieces of gear, making a full set a worthwhile investment for certain builds.

Having said that, it is unclear what the Talisman System actually brings to Diablo 4. The only information that was given is that it allows you to “equip set bonuses,” which I am assuming is quite similar to the set items in D2 and D3.

If that is the case, Blizzard should be careful in implementing such a thing so as to prevent power creep from destroying the overall balance of the game.

Some people say that the Talisman is something that you can equip (like a piece of gear). Others have mentioned that it could just be something that you can toggle on your character’s stats page.

Whatever the mode of implementation is, I am hoping that it is a feature that people would love using rather than just a needless thing that is not worth investing in.

War Plans

War Plans

Diablo 4 has a whole host of activities that you can do, including Nightmare Dungeons, Helltides, Tree of Whisper Quests, Lair Bosses, and Infernal Hordes. However, modifiers that improve their loot drops and difficulty levels are quite sparse in the current version of the game. That is all about to change in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred with the new War Plans!

The “War Plans” is a new feature in Diablo 4 that pretty much gives you the freedom to customize your endgame. Don’t want to do Tree of Whisper quests and instead focus on Nightmare Dungeons and Helltides? You can somehow influence the latter two endgame activities to become more challenging and lucrative, and make the Tree of Whispers a lot more manageable to accomplish.

Of course, that is just speculation at this point, but many people agree with my assessment. If this truly is the case, then I can see War Plans being a godsend for those who feel that the current D4 endgame is lacking, both in terms of the challenge they provide, as well as the loot you’re going to get as a reward for said challenge.

Bonus Skill Variants

Bonus Skill Variants

The current skill tree in Diablo 4 is quite simple, allowing complete beginners an easy time navigating it. However, I would say that it is too simple, so much so that Blizzard should explore more options to make skills perform better, deal more damage, or provide more utility. I think that is going to happen in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, especially because the company is looking into doing a complete revamp of the skill tree.

So, what can you expect when the expansion drops in April 2026? Well, for one, each skill now has several different upgrades that you can choose from. This change alone should give you a ton of build flexibility, which will result in more awesome builds!

In addition, it seems that all active skills can now be leveled up to 12! This is quite incredible because the current version of the game only limits you to spending only five points on your skill of choice. Just imagine the Brandish Paladin build having 12 points on Brandish by default, you could have that skill be leveled up to 50 or more with the right D4 items!

Echoing Hatred

Blizzard is teasing the idea of being able to battle endless hordes of monsters in the new endgame activity called Echoing Hatred. Not much has been revealed about this particular thing, except for the fact that you can continue fighting enemies to your heart's content.

Of course, for Echoing Hatred to be successful, it must provide you with a means of acquiring some awesome new gear or item that you can fit into your character. If this is not the case, perhaps Echoing Hatred could be your gateway into leveling your character to 60 as quickly as possible.

New Activity: Fishing

Amidst all of the new chaotic content that Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred brings, it's nice for Blizzard to add a new activity that lets you relax from time to time. When the new expansion drops, you can fish in any designated spot in the game.

Information about fishing is sparse at the moment, but it has been rumored that you can fish in specific spots in the Skovos Isles. Whether that be in the volcanic region or the shores of the sunken temples remains to be seen.

For fishing to be an activity that players will actually love doing, it has to give them something worthwhile. One thing I can think of is that it is the only avenue for you to get some materials that are required for transmuting endgame equipment through the Horadric Cube.

Another thing that you could obtain from fishing is a new currency that you can trade with a dedicated Fishing NPC. As I've said, these are all my speculations, but do revisit this article in the future, as I will provide more details as they surface prior to the Lord of Hatred expansion's release.

Who Should Buy Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred Expansion?

Blizzard is offering tons of new content in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. The beloved Paladin Class is already worth the price of admission, but the promise of a new class, a new campaign, and the chance to defeat Mephisto once more are all great additions indeed!

I also love the fact that the company is going to overhaul most of the systems in the game. For example, the skill tree is getting revamped, with several upgrade options available to you for each active skill. Besides that, you can now level up your favorite active skill to 12, which means that you can deal even more damage in the upcoming expansion!

The return of the Horadric Cube is promising as well. Blizzard should think about new ways to increase your character’s power through this feature, though. It remains to be seen how the Horadric Cube can factor into this equation, but I remain fairly optimistic about it.

With all of that said, what can you say about Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred? Are you going to pre-order it now to play the Paladin Class, or will you wait for reviews after the expansion launches on April 28, 2026?
