Diablo Warlock Class Explained: How It Works in D2R, Diablo 4, and Diablo Immort

To celebrate the Diablo franchise’s 30th anniversary, Blizzard has announced plenty of new content that is coming to Diablo 4, Diablo Immortal, and Diablo II: Resurrected. One of these is the new Warlock Class, which is a mix of both summoner and caster.

While the new class is slated to be released on all three aforementioned games, its implementation in each title is a bit different. If you want to know more about the Warlock, then come and join me as we have a lot to unpack about the master of demon binding.

Core Identity of the Diablo Warlock Class

The Warlock Class is a hybrid of a summoner and a caster. Using the sinister magic of demon binding, it can summon powerful demons that can aid them in combat.

Here are a few defining mechanics of the Warlock Class in Diablo:

Demon Summoning

Depending on which game you play, the Warlock can use its mastery of sinister magic to summon demons to do their bidding, though with some distinct variations.

For instance, in Diablo II: Resurrected, the Warlock can call forth a Goatman, which is a tanky melee warrior that deals considerable amounts of damage, especially early on. In Diablo Immortal, the Warlock summons a different demon, one that can fly and hit enemies with fiery flames.

The Warlock’s ability to summon a demonic legion makes it a fun class to play, particularly when you prefer being a minion commander more than anything else.

Demon Binding

The Warlock can also bind to a demon and force it to fight for the cause. Now, there are a couple of things to note here. First, the target demon should have its HP dwindled down to at least 75% of its maximum to increase the chance of the Demon Binding spell being successful.

Second, demon binding has its limitations. The spell can only be cast on non-boss demons, so if you have fantasies of manipulating the Prime Evils, then I am afraid that you won’t be able to fulfill that.

Demon Consuming

Any demon that is bound by the Warlock can be consumed at will. Doing so grants the Warlock temporary buffs and traits, such as increased life, a temporary movement speed boost, and + to skills, etc.

This particular Warlock mechanic may have slight variations, depending on the game. It is possible that the Diablo 4 Warlock, for example, gains a different set of bonuses based on the class specialization that is selected.

Eldritch Weapons

The Warlock is also a master of the Eldritch Arts. This allows the said Diablo Class to create ethereal duplicates of its weapons and use them to destroy the minions of Hell.

Because of its ability to harness magic this way, the Warlock is the only class in the Diablo franchise that can wield two-handed weapons in one hand! Thus, the class-specific item, Tome, can be equipped in the off-hand, providing bonuses and stats to make the character even stronger!

Chaos Skills

Although the power to control demons and create ethereal weapons is a handy skill to have, it might not be enough to defeat the Prime Evils. Fortunately, the Warlock can bring destruction and ruin by harnessing the power of dark magic.

The Warlock is capable of tearing the fabric of reality to keep enemies at bay. While their movement is restricted, the Warlock can cast destructive spells, like the aptly named “Apocalypse,” to deal with the enemies in a timely fashion.

How the Warlock Differs Across D2R, Diablo 4, and Diablo Immortal

Diablo II: Resurrected

The Warlock Class is now available in Diablo II: Resurrected. If you already have a copy of the base game, you can simply purchase the Reign of the Warlock DLC to get your hands on the new class. If not, there is the D2R: Infernal Edition, which retails for $40. Buying the more expensive edition provides you with a couple of stash tabs, two additional character slots, and some freebies that you can get from other Blizzard games.

Anyway, the Warlock in this game has the ability to summon demons, including the Goatman, the Tainted, and the Defiler. Besides that, the said class can utilize the Eldritch Arts to create ethereal weapons. These weapons can be manipulated to cleave enemies in melee range or thrown at enemies from a distance. To maximize this, the Warlock must be equipped with the best D2 items, particularly those that enhance its stats and damage.

In essence, here is what you can expect from the Warlock Class if you play it in Diablo II: Resurrected:

• Bring Chaos: With its ability to cast chaos spells, the Warlock can create large sigils on the ground that deal fire damage. This class can also manipulate fire in more ways than one.
• Minions at Your Service: The Warlock in D2R is able to summon three minions, though it also has the ability to bind a random demon-type monster as well.
• Take Advantage of the Ethereal: Being a master of the Eldritch Arts, the Warlock can make ethereal copies of its weapons, which can do a melee swing (Cleave), hit enemies multiple times (Mirrored Blades), or be thrown from range (Echoing Strike).

Diablo IV

Although the Blizzard devs have yet to bring any confirmed information about the Warlock Class in Diablo 4, there have been leaks that circulated around social media right after the Diablo 30th anniversary event. Here is what we know about the upcoming new class so far:

• Four Specializations: All classes in Diablo 4 come with unique specializations. With that said, the Warlock is rumored to have four specializations that significantly alter the capabilities of this class. These specializations are the Legion, Vanguard, Mastermind, and Ritualist.
• Become the Mastermind: This particular specialization lets the Warlock bind demons on a whim.
• Drive the Vanguard: If the bound demons are not powerful enough, the Warlock takes it upon itself to transform into a demon with untold strength.
• Command the Legion: This class specialization relies on the notion of "strength in numbers." It's possible that the Warlock gains the ability to summon more than one demon at a time, though this has yet to be confirmed.
• Cause Chaos and Destruction: With the Ritualist spec, the Warlock utilizes demonic energy to bring calamity and ruin to the enemy.

Diablo Immortal

Diablo Immortal is a bit more fast-paced compared to the other titles, so it’s only fitting that the Warlock is more agile in this game, especially in terms of summoning demons and casting chaos-based spells.

Here is what you can expect from the Warlock Class in Diablo Immortal:

• Command a Powerful Demon: Judging from the reveal trailer, the Warlock in Diablo Immortal can command a powerful demon that not only attacks enemies at melee range but also has the ability to fly and spew flames at the same time.
• Whip Enemies Into Submission: The Warlock was seen whipping enemies up in the air, possibly making them unable to move for a short period. Apart from that, the Warlock can wield a sword, which may open up a set of new abilities that will utilize the said weapon.
• Fire and Fury: Lastly, the Warlock uses demonic energy to create sigils on the ground, dealing fire damage in the process.

FAQ

Is the Diablo Warlock Class Confirmed for All Three Games?

Yes. The Warlock is now available in D2R. The said class will be available in Diablo 4 on April 28 and Diablo Immortal sometime in the Summer of 2026.

Is the Warlock More Like the Necromancer or the Sorcerer?

The Warlock Class is actually a mix of both. It is capable of summoning demons to fight by its side, while also being able to cast destructive spells through chaos magic.

When Will More Warlock Details Be Revealed?

Blizzard will hold a livestream on March 5 to reveal more information about the Warlock’s skills, specializations, and Paragon Board.

Since the Warlock is reportedly going to be introduced in Diablo Immortal this Summer, it’s possible that Blizzard will have another separate livestream sometime in June.
