RuneScape is notorious for its progression systems, which require far more time investment than most other games, and any player will know this very well if their account is in the mid to late game. The endgame of both RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape revolves around grinds that take weeks or even months to complete on average. Some players choose to farm items directly, while others farm gold and buy those items from the Grand Exchange. In either case, in both games, this takes a huge amount of time, but most players do not actually know exactly how long it takes, and it is shocking to learn.

In this guide, we’ll look at real examples from both games, compare them, and show you how long it takes to obtain certain items, as well as how much time you could save by simply buying gold. If you are a player who is starting their late-game journey, this guide will be an eye-opener for you. All of the examples in this guide are based on averages.

End Game Gear Progression

Before diving into individual examples and comparisons, it’s important to understand the key differences between OSRS and RS3, and how an item’s gold cost reflects its rarity. First of all, obtaining items in both games is based heavily on RNG; you might get the drop you want on your first kill or on your thousandth. Player skill level also plays a major role in both games; as you progress toward the endgame, the bosses you need to grind become harder and harder.

That being said, as things currently stand, OSRS is much more RNG-heavy, whereas RS3 leans more toward skill-based gameplay. This is due to the boss design ideology adopted by RS3, where all newly added endgame bosses possess an enrage meter, which greatly amplifies the difficulty of the bosses while also increasing the players' chance of obtaining a rare drop from them. Some raids and bosses on OSRS also have the same mechanic to a lesser extent.

Endgame items obtained from high-level content are almost always expensive. Both games have player-driven economies, and an item’s value directly corresponds to its supply and demand. Since endgame items come from difficult, frustrating, and time-consuming activities, their prices are usually extremely high.

You can also see a stark difference between item values in RS3 compared to OSRS. This is due to the constantly inflating economy of RuneScape 3, where the value of gold is significantly lower than in OSRS. The rough exchange ratio is around 1:10. With all of this information out of the way, let’s start analysing items from each game.

What Makes an Item “Endgame”

Endgame refers to items that are a player’s best-in-slot gear. These items perform the best in player-versus-monster content and are highly desired due to their power and time-saving effects. Since these items are extremely powerful, they can save you time in nearly every activity, and because RuneScape is such a long game, even saving a minute per task can add up to months over time.

OSRS Endgame Weapons/Armors

Compared to RS3, OSRS has a much more diverse endgame. The endgame raids and bosses usually require mega rares to have the best kill times, whereas activities such as Slayer, Slayer bosses, or other less powerful bosses require specific armor and weapons for the best kill times. An example would be using the scythe of Vitur against Araxxor, but emberlight against Yama. This horizontal system requires the player to own all sorts of different gear sets, which increases the time it takes to collect said items that much higher.

Let’s take a look at the Scythe of Vitur, the strongest melee weapon in OSRS. This weapon is obtained from the Theatre of Blood and has an average drop rate of 1/172 in normal mode and 1/138 in hard mode. If you could farm this raid nonstop, those rates might not seem too bad, but an average Theatre of Blood run takes around 30–40 minutes. Even for highly skilled players, it usually still takes about 20 minutes. There’s another catch, however: to farm this raid efficiently, you’ll need two other capable players to help you, which means you’ll also have to split any rewards at the end.

With the best completion rate being around three runs per hour, the high skill required to clear the raid, and the item being extremely sought after, it’s no surprise that it costs a whopping 1.4B. If you had the best gear in the game and performed perfectly with your team, it would take around 57 hours on average to see this drop. However, since rewards are split, it would realistically take about 172 hours to earn a Scythe for yourself.

If you’re not a PvM expert playing with other PvM experts, this grind can easily stretch to around 400 hours. Alternatively, if you chose to farm gold to buy the Scythe instead, assuming you make 3M per hour, it would take you roughly 466 hours to afford it. This makes it so that buying osrs gold will save you around 400 hours on average just for this one item. That is 8, 48-hour work weeks.

RS3 Endgame Gear

Unlike OSRS, nearly all of RS3’s endgame weapons and gear come exclusively from high-level PvM encounters. This creates a major barrier to entry for players who want to obtain these legendary items. For a fair comparison, let’s look at one of the strongest two-handed weapons in RuneScape 3: the Ek-ZekKil.

This weapon is obtained by defeating TzKal-Zuk, and if that name sounds familiar, you already know how difficult the fight is. The boss drops three different weapon pieces that must be combined to create the Ek-ZekKil. This weapon cannot be obtained from the normal mode of the fight, requiring you to complete the challenging hard mode. Each kill gives you a 1/30 chance to receive a random piece. Once you obtain the first piece, it is removed from the drop table, increasing your chance to 1/27 for the remaining pieces.

If you are a top-of-the-line PVMer on Runescape 3 with access to the best gear in the game, you can get 3 kills per hour. If not, you are likely to only get 1 - 2 kills per hour. Assuming you do not die, this can make this grind take anywhere around 30 - 90 hours. This is why Runescape 3 is much more skill-based with its drops. especially when compared to simply buying RS3 Gold. If you are an average player farming 30M gold per hour, you can get this item in 62 hours.

Endgame Items Time Comparison

The times listed below include both grinding the item directly from the content and farming other activities for gold to buy it instead. Hours do not take into consideration your downtime and are all based on effective time farmed. The lowest estimates assume the player has the absolute best gear in the game, achieves perfect kill times, and makes no mistakes (this is especially difficult to do on RS3). The highest estimates reflect average conditions, including average gear, skill level, and RNG.

Keep in mind that in any grind, you can get lucky and receive the item way earlier than you are supposed to, or go dry and farm for 2 - 3 times longer than usual.

Grind VS Buy: Which One Is Worth It For You

Grind vs Buy

The rates listed above are rough estimates, as it’s especially difficult to give exact timeframes for rare drops in RS3. For example, Tumeken’s Light has a drop rate of 1/200 when killing the boss at 2,000% enrage. If you can manage six kills per hour, you would expect to see one drop every 33 hours on average. However, since this is team-based content with five players, splitting the reward raises the expected time to around 166 hours for one item.

Even then, average drop rates can be misleading, as farming gold from other activities and purchasing the item from the Grand Exchange is often faster and more reliable. For example, if you can farm 20M per hour on Runescape 3, you can buy Tumuken’s Light in 105 hours. Due to these reasons, some players choose to farm gold and others choose to buy it. The list above, after all, is just a small sample of all the relevant items you can get in these games. There are different gear sets for different encounters on OSRS. In Runescape 3, on the other hand, there are dual-wield and 2-handed weapons, tank, and power armor, and all sorts of buffs you can apply via the pretty expensive invention skill. If you want to learn more about the best OSRS gear, you can check out our OSRS BIS Guide. If you want to learn more about the best Runescape 3 gears, we have guides on Magic, Melee, Ranged, and Necromancy that cover gear, abilities, and perks.

Given all this information, you should grind items if you:

  • Are enjoying the grind
  • Have a well-made account with strong gear
  • Can easily do the mechanics of high-end bosses
  • Can efficiently farm content
  • Have free time to do so

You should buy gold if you:

  • Don’t want to grind for long hours
  • Don’t have good gear
  • Don’t have that much free time
  • Just want to enjoy the game without effort

FAQ

  1. What is considered endgame gear in OSRS vs RS3?
Scythe of Vitur, Twisted bow, Tumuken’s Shadow, Zaryte Crossbow, Inquisitor's Mace, Soulreaper Axe, Torva armor set, Inquisitor armor set, Oathplate armor set, Masori Armor set, and Ancestral Armor set are considered endgame gear on OSRS.

For Runescape 3, any weapon or gear tier 92 or above is considered endgame.

  1. What is the fastest way to grind high-tier items?
It is by owning the high-tier items and farming the most difficult content in the game using them.
  2. Why are some items extremely expensive?
Some items are extremely expensive because of their rarity, the difficulty of the boss that drops the items, and the time it takes to get them as a drop.
  3. Is it faster to farm gold or grind the item directly?
It varies depending on the content. But generally speaking, it is faster to grind gold to purchase the item from the Grand Exchange. Although you can always get lucky while grinding the item.
  4. How unstable are endgame gear prices?
They are pretty stable until a content release. For example, if the content that favors the scythe of Vitur is released, the price of the scythe will go up. If content that brings in a weapon that can rival the scythe of Vitur is released, then the price will go down.
  5. Do endgame items hold long-term value?
Yes, they do. For example, the first mega rare of OSRS, the Twisted bow, consistently stayed between 1.2B - 1.8B even though it has been 8 years since its release.
  6. Does player skill reduce grind hours significantly?
Yes, in fact, if the player is not skilled in the game, it can more than triple the amount of time needed to grind those items.
  7. Is endgame gear required for all bosses?
It is required if you are looking to kill them as efficiently as possible.
  8. Are RS3 grinds shorter than OSRS grinds?

Yes and no, it totally depends on which grind it is and the skill level it requires. But if we are just looking at the hours and drop rates, Runescape 3 is much shorter.
