Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids will signal the start of a new league named Fate of the Vaal. Veterans of the original game may already have an idea of what to expect, but for the beginners out there, I’ve got you covered!
Today, I am going to talk about what awaits you in PoE 2 Fate of the Vaal League. Let me tell you that this league has a lot of things in store for you, including new ways to augment items, corrupt gear to gain more modifiers, and fight a new pinnacle boss who can drop a truly unique item for your next build.
Since the new league will introduce a ton of new currencies, visit our PoE 2 Currency Store. Our shop is going to be stocked with Vaal Infusers, Orbs of Extraction, and so much more once the Fate of the Vaal League goes live on December 12!
What is the Fate of the Vaal League?
Some of you might get confused with the naming here, especially since GGG has opted to call the expansion and the new league itself differently. Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids is the name of the expansion, which introduces the new Druid class and its ascendancies.
The Fate of the Vaal, on the other hand, is the name of the new PoE 2 league. This means a fresh economy, as well as a bunch of new mechanics that will make your journey to Wraeclast a whole lot more meaningful!
League Theme & Setting
The main league mechanic for the Fate of the Vaal is basically Incursion 2.0. If you have not played the original game, Incursion is a mechanic that lets you enter the Vaal Temple. What’s cool about it is that you can tinker with the temple’s layout anyway you see fit, essentially letting you create your own dungeon.
During the campaign, you will come across Vaal Beacons that are guarded by a pack of monsters. Defeating these monsters will power up these beacons. Don’t forget to interact with the beacon to activate it.

Since the Vaal Beacons are quite old, you will need to energize six beacons. Once that is done, a portal to the Vaal Ruins will open, allowing you to enter the Vaal Temple itself.

Once inside, you will come across the Temple Console, which is the site where you can adjust the dungeon’s layout according to your preferences. Take note that you can only place up to six rooms every time you visit the temple. That is why you’ll need to re-enter the temple several times in order to complete the layout.
The Temple Console will show you a 9x9 grid, with two extending grids for the entrance and the boss room.

Core League Mechanics for the Fate of the Vaal
You will encounter the core league mechanic for the PoE 2 Fate of the Vaal league during the campaign. However, the fun begins once you are able to go back in time, to a critical point before Atziri triggered the cataclysm that destroyed the entire Vaal civilization.
Since this guide was written before the release of Path of Exile 2: The Last of the Druids, there are still so many things that have not been revealed yet. I am only going through publicly available information, so some things might change once the league has fully launched.
That said, it is still unclear at the time of writing if the time travel back to the past occurs in Act 4 or during one of the Interlude Acts. However, it is safe to say that it is indeed part of the game, especially since certain crafts can result in some awesome PoE 2 items.
How Players Engage with the League Mechanic
When you unlock the “past” version of the Temple, you can place a bunch more rooms into the Temple Console as you see fit.
The basic premise of the league mechanic is that you place a combination of Halls (paths) and rooms until you reach the Temple Architect’s Chamber. As mentioned earlier, you’re likely going to need three to four temple visits before you can complete the layout, especially since the Temple will “destabilize” after each run.
Destabilization, in this context, refers to some of the rooms getting removed from the Temple’s layout. While you have control over which rooms to place on the console before running the Temple, you don’t have any influence on what rooms get removed during destabilization. This means that if you have fully upgraded a room, it can potentially be deleted from the layout after completing your current run.
In addition, each room can be upgraded to level 3 by adding certain rooms adjacent to it. For example, you can upgrade the Guardhouse by putting the Commander’s Chamber right next to it.

Although some rooms need to be adjacent to each other, there are some that you can place a bit further away, so long as they are still connected somehow (which is depicted by the red line that you can see from the image above).
There are two major points of interest inside the Vaal Ruins that influence your progression inside the temple. These are the rooms to the Temple Architect and the chamber where Atziri resides.

You must fight the Temple Architect in his chamber so that you can put the “Royal Access Chamber” in its respective slot on the temple layout. This is the only way you can go face-to-face with Atziri herself.
When the Royal Access Chamber is in place, traverse towards it, and you’ll find a portal that will lead you to Atziri’s Chamber.

Best Rooms in the Vaal Temple
Just like the Incursion mechanic in the original game, the Vaal Ruins is home to many different rooms, which provide you with different items, crafts, and bonuses depending on which room you have placed and traversed inside the Temple.
Here are some of the best rooms inside the Vaal Temple:
Locus of Corruption
The Locus of Corruption is one of the best rooms in the Vaal Temple, primarily because it contains a device that allows you to modify your corrupted item a second time. Veterans of the original game call this the “double corrupt” because you are essentially modifying your corrupted items twice.
Double-corrupting an item in PoE 2 is actually pretty awesome because you can potentially add two corrupted implicit modifiers if you are lucky.
Keep in mind that double-corrupting your gear is quite risky because there is a 50% chance that the item will be destroyed in the process! That is why you only put spare items inside the corruption device, and not the actual gear you are currently wearing.
Having said that, the Locus of Corruption is a fully upgraded version of the Corruption Chamber. To upgrade this room, place the Altar of Sacrifice and Thaumaturge’s Laboratory right next to it.

Doryani’s Institute
In Doryani’s Institute, you can find Doryani’s Masterwork, which is a device that lets you corrupt a skill gem at a much higher chance than using the Vaal Orb. With this device, a level 21 gem with +23% quality is achievable!

Alchemy Lab
When you fully upgrade the Alchemy Lab to the max, you will encounter a boss that can potentially drop one of the new corrupted soul cores.
Corrupted soul cores provide incredible modifiers, though they always come with a downside. For example, Guatelitzi’s Thesis increases your movement speed while sprinting by 25%. However, this comes at the cost of losing 5% of your maximum life per second.

Sacrificial Chamber
If you are feeling lucky, upgrade the Sacrificial Chamber to level 3. Defeat the boss in this room so that you can have access to Juatalotli’s Triumph, which is a device that lets you modify your corrupted unique item by replacing one of its unique modifiers with a new one. This is quite similar to the current league mechanic in the original game, so it’s nice to see it implemented in the sequel somehow.

Although Juatalotli’s Triumph accepts any PoE 2 unique item, it is much better if you put a Vaal Unique Item, like the Drillneck, into it for a chance at double corrupted modifiers.
Now, there are a couple of important things to note here when using this device. First, the item that you can put inside the device must already be corrupted (either by using a Vaal Orb or the Corruption Chamber upgrade).
Second, the outcome could potentially lead to two different corrupted mods; one that is a downside, and another that is an upside. You may have to do subsequent trips to the upgraded Sacrificial Chamber to get the best possible result for your item.
Surgeon’s Symphony
The Vaal Temple is not only a place where you can modify your gear, but it is also where you can augment your body to gain some exclusive bonuses. This is possible by fully upgrading the Surgeon’s Ward into Surgeon’s Symphony by placing the Prosthetic Research and Dynamo rooms adjacent to it.
In this room, there will be a boss that you have to defeat. Once completed, you gain access to the Transcension Device. Interacting with this device presents you with four random bonuses, so choose the one that best complements your PoE 2 build.
For instance, you can augment your body to increase your stun threshold, which helps you survive in maps with large packs of monsters attacking simultaneously.
Take note that when you die after the surgical procedure is performed, your body reverts to its original state, removing the bonus provided by the Transcension Device.

Commander’s Chamber
The Commander’s Chamber allows you to face the formidable Commander himself. After defeating him, he will drop “Medallions” that can alter rooms in specific ways. Only two medallions have been revealed so far: Qipalotl’s Medallion and Juatalotli’s Medallion.
Qipalotl’s Medallion upgrades a room by one tier when used. This is ideal if you want to achieve the Locus of Corruption but don’t have enough tiles to fully upgrade it normally.
The other medallion, Juatalotli’s Medallion, allows you to “lock” rooms in place, preventing them from being removed after completing your current temple run due to destabilization.
Architect’s Chamber
You cannot fully complete the Vaal Temple without visiting the Temple Architect. The Royal Architect, named Xipocado, is a boss you must defeat to gain access to one of the temple’s “special rooms,” including the Royal Access Chamber.
Here is a brief rundown of the special rooms revealed so far:
- Jiquani’s Trove: Socketable Items
- Extraction Chamber: Orb of Extraction
- Tablet Research: Ancient Infuser
New Pinnacle Boss: Atziri, the Red Queen

Each new league introduces a new pinnacle boss. For the Fate of the Vaal League, you will face the queen of the Vaal herself: Atziri!
Atziri, the Red Queen, will test your skills and endurance. Expect a challenging fight, so make sure you are fully equipped before engaging her.
After defeating her, you will be rewarded handsomely. One potential reward is the unique item Atziri’s Rule, which grants the special effect of spawning Mirrors of Refraction. Projectiles fired at these mirrors will be reflected back, making it a powerful weapon for projectile-based builds.
New PoE 2 Currency in the Fate of the Vaal League
Patch 0.4.0 (Fate of the Vaal League) introduces several new PoE 2 currency items, including:
- Ancient Infuser: Corrupts a Precursor Tablet, granting additional modifiers or improving existing ones.
- Architect’s Orb: Modifies corrupted gear or jewels on the go, allowing a double-corrupt effect.
- Core Destabiliser: Modifies a soul core, potentially resulting in one of the new “corrupted” soul cores like Guatelitzi's Thesis.
- Crystallised Corruption: Corrupts a skill gem, which could produce a level 21 gem with +23% quality, though it carries a risk of breaking the gem.
- Orb of Extraction: Returns socketed items from gear, destroying the item in the process.
- Vaal Cultivation Orb: Replaces up to two modifiers on a corrupted Vaal Unique Item; one may be an upside and the other a downside. Can also be used on non-Vaal uniques, converting them into other uniques of the same type.
- Vaal Infuser: Increases the quality of weapons and armor above 20% (possibly up to 21-30%) and may add a corrupted modifier.
- Vaal Siphoner: Adds a threshold to jewelry (rings or amulets). Killing monsters fills the threshold, and once reached, a random modifier is removed in exchange for improved numeric values on other mods.
