Path of Exile: Mirage is just a few days away from being released. A lot of people are excited about the endgame, especially since GGG dropped plenty of new information about the things that you can expect in Patch 3.28.
Come and join me as I talk about each of the endgame changes in Path of Exile: Mirage that you should know. I encourage you to stick around to find out how you can farm the Best PoE items once the expansion drops later this week!
How Path of Exile: Mirage Changes Mapping
One of the biggest endgame changes GGG has made in Path of Exile: Mirage is the Atlas. The company has done a complete revamp of the Atlas System, with the goal of simplifying things for both beginners and veterans alike.
Atlas Overhaul

Prior to the release of the PoE Mirage League, you will begin your endgame mapping experience by starting from the very bottom of the Atlas. But now? You actually start in the middle. It is up to you where you want to branch out to uncover the Atlas from the fog (by completing maps in sequence).
Aside from the starting point, named maps have been completely removed and are replaced with tiered maps. GGG adopts the map system in PoE 2, where you only need to put a Waystone to open maps.
For Path of Exile: Mirage, all you have to do is insert a T16 map, for example, and you can choose whatever map is on the Atlas that you have already unlocked!

There are blank slots available at the bottom that are reserved for scarabs. You can use your favorite scarabs to include certain types of content in the maps that you run.

Change in Map Juicing
Map Juicing, for those who do not know, is the use of various PoE Currency to add modifiers to maps. Doing this will make the maps harder, but in exchange for that increased difficulty, you have a much higher chance of getting more coveted loot.
As part of the endgame overhaul, GGG deemed it necessary to remove the Cartographer's Chisels to streamline the process, resulting in far fewer clicks than before.
With the removal of Cartographer's Chisels, how can you juice your maps from Path of Exile: Mirage, and in the future? Well, you can still do the following:
- Use Orb of Alchemy (aka "Alch-and-Go")
- Use Exalted Orbs (to ensure that the map has six modifiers)
- Use Vaal Orb (after Orb of Alchemy and Exalted Orb)
- Populate the empty slots in the Map Device with Scarabs (of various kinds)
Path of Exile: Mirage – What Are Astrolabes?
If you have seen the reveal trailer for Path of Exile: Mirage, game director Mark Roberts mentioned the Astrolabes. Simply put, Astrolabes are new currency items that you can use directly on the maps on the Atlas of Worlds. By doing this, you will find several maps being encased inside a "blob" of sorts, which is now part of a "Shaped Region."

If you want to use an Astrolabe, speak to Eagon Caesarius and choose the "Apply Astrolabe" option. This opens up the Atlas of Worlds for you to see. Open your inventory, right-click on the Astrolabe, and then click on the map that you want. This will turn the surrounding maps and include them as part of the Shaped Region, with the additional content depending on the type that was used.
When you use the Fungal Astrolabe, for example, each map in the Shaped Region will have a Blight Encounter guaranteed. Hence, do not spend a Blight Scarab on these maps because it will just be wasted.

Anyway, finishing the additional content inside a map in the Shaped Region will cause that map to be removed. The remaining maps become harder because they will gain an additional modifier as a result. The last map in the Shaped Region is exponentially more difficult than the previous ones, so be sure to have your PoE build's survivability in check before running it.

What happens if you are able to finish all of the maps inside the Shaped Region? Eagon rewards you by giving you access to one of the four memory vaults. Each vault contains a particular set of rewards.
At the time of writing, only two memory vaults have been revealed so far. The first is the Archon's Vault, which is a vault that contains unique items. The second is the Zealot's Vault, which houses valuable PoE Currencies for you to take.
The beauty of the Astrolabe System is that you can actually focus on a specific memory vault by spending an Astrolabe on a specific quadrant. If you want to go inside the Archon's Vault often for a chance to get Mageblood, then you can certainly do so.

More Powerful Voidstones
Voidstones are special items that enhance the maps in the Atlas of Worlds. Before Patch 3.28, Voidstones were only able to influence the tier of the maps that drop from defeating monsters. But in Path of Exile: Mirage, Voidstones are able to do more!

Socketing a Voidstone in its respective receptacle on the Atlas UI now grants the ability to unlock Nightmare Maps, enhancing both map difficulty and rewards.
Nightmare Maps
GGG has removed T17 maps in Patch 3.28. Replacing them are "Nightmare Maps," considered by some to be T16.5. These maps are slightly harder than T16 maps, but not as punishing as the old T17s.
For Nightmare Maps to drop, you must have at least one Voidstone affecting the Atlas of Worlds. The drop chance improves significantly if all four Voidstones are socketed.
Atlas Skill Points

The Atlas Passive Skill Tree is a major component of the endgame experience, containing passive skills that significantly alter map mechanics. In Path of Exile: Mirage, you now have six additional skill points, bringing the total to 138 (up from 132). 100 of these points can be earned by completing Atlas Objectives, such as finishing magic or rare corrupted maps.
What Happened to Harbinger in PoE 3.28?
Harbinger has been removed in Patch 3.28 for several reasons. Game director Mark Roberts explained that Harbinger needed to be taken out to return later in a better form. Additionally, the mechanic felt outdated compared to other endgame content such as the overhauled Breach system, which now provides effective farming opportunities.
As a result of Harbinger's removal, the following PoE currency items have also been removed:
- Engineer's Orb
- Harbinger's Orb
- Orb of Horizons
Keepers League Mechanic Goes Core
The Keepers League Mechanic from Path of Exile: Keepers of the Flame is now part of the core game. This applies to both players in the upcoming Mirage League and those staying in Standard League.
Significant changes to the mechanic in PoE 3.28 include:
- Ailith is now located at the Mud Flats entrance in Act 6.
- Multiple Unstable Breaches can spawn in areas, including campaign and endgame maps. Only one Breach type can appear at a time (either Breach Hive or Unstable Breach).
- Breachstones (such as Xoph or Tul Breachstones) are no longer functional. Standard League players can sell them to vendors for Hivebrain Glands.
- Hivebrain Glands open portals to a Hive Colony when used.
- Grafts can no longer be created. Builds that rely on grafts for damage or survivability will need to adapt elsewhere.
- The Genesis Tree is fully grown by default, giving access to all wombs. Points earned by helping Ailith are still required to unlock the tree’s full potential.

The previous expansion’s league mechanic has gone core. Breach 2.0 and the Genesis Tree are now accessible in both Mirage League and Standard League.
Is Mapping Harder in PoE: Mirage?
From a quality of life perspective, mapping is more streamlined and easier to follow for beginners. Nightmare Maps (formerly T17) are more manageable because some problematic modifiers were removed in Patch 3.28.
