The Spirit Walker is an ascendancy class for the Huntress in Path of Exile 2, which was introduced in the Return of the Ancients expansion. She is ideal for those who enjoy the minion playstyle because of her ability to tame unique beasts and harness the power of beast spirits to improve projectiles and more.
What is Spirit Walker in PoE 2?
Attuned with the Azmeri Spirits, the Spirit Walker can tap into a few animal spirits in PoE 2, namely the Stag, Owl, and Bear. Each of these animals grants the Spirit Walker some new abilities that will help her defeat the enemy.
On top of that, she can tame even the most powerful beasts in Path of Exile 2, including certain bosses that you can find at various points in the campaign, such as the Xyclucian, the Chimera, Rakkar, the Frozen Talon, and the Mighty Silverfist, among others.
With her unique set of skills, the Spirit Walker is positioned as a PoE 2 ascendancy class that harnesses the power of Spirit beast and unique monsters to do her bidding.
How Spirit Walker Mechanics Work in PoE 2
There are certain ascendancy nodes available to the Spirit Walker that give her access to unique skills. Vivid Stampede, for example, allows the Spirit Walker to call forth a stampede of Stag Spirits that cause shockwaves where they land, while also leaving behind Shocked Ground. Enemies that step on this area are affected by Shock, which makes them take increased damage with subsequent hits.
If you want to invest in the Stag Spirit, you can take the node next to it called “The Morrigan’s Guidance.” This not only increases the damage and Shock magnitude of the Stags, but also lets the Spirit Walker gain a Vivid Wisp when the stampede ends.
Those who prefer using projectile skills might want to consider going for the Owl Spirit by taking the “Primal Bounty” node. Doing so enables the Spirit Walker to gain a Primal Owl Feather every four seconds (up to a maximum of three). These owl feathers can be spent to trigger the titular “Primal Bounty,” which is a buff that empowers projectile skills to fire two additional projectiles (with 68% increased projectile speed).
Just like the Stag, the Owl Spirit can be improved by taking the next ascendancy node connecting to Primal Bounty called “The Mhacha’s Gift.” With this node allocated, performing a Dodge Roll will spend three owl feathers to boost the empowerment effect of Primal Bounty by 100%. The Mhacha’s Gift also makes the Spirit Walker gain Primal Owl Feathers 50% faster.
Take note that the empowerment effect granted by the Primal Bounty buff applies to spells as well. This is so long as they are spells that produce projectiles, like Spark and Fireball.
Both of the aforementioned spirits only appear temporarily to provide some meaningful support. However, if you want a more permanent ally, then you should consider taking the Bear Spirit via the “Wild Protector” ascendancy node.
The Bear Spirit has a few abilities that are worth noting. First, it can leap at enemies and maim them, slowing them down and reducing their evasion rating for several seconds. Second, the Bear Spirit can perform a devastating slam, which causes it to leech life from enemies that are hit. Third, the Bear Spirit can unleash a violent roar that applies “Intimidate” on enemies, causing them to take 10% increased damage so long as the debuff is active.
In addition, the Bear Spirit does not take up your Companion Slots, so you can have a tamed beast active alongside the Bear to fight for you.
To improve the Bear Spirit, you can consider getting “The Catha’s Balance” ascendancy node. With this node allocated, the Bear Spirit, as well as your other Companions, can deal additional attack damage equal to 60% of your main hand weapon damage. This incentivizes you to use powerful PoE 2 items in the weapon slot to maximize this node.
Now, allocating the Vivid Stampede, Primal Bounty, and Wild Protector nodes will unlock a new node on the Spirit Walker’s tree called the “Sacred Unity.” What it does is it grants each animal spirit some new effects, such as:
- Bear Spirit: Embrace of the Wild—Protects the Bear Spirit’s allies while they are in its presence, granting them 2% of maximum life regenerated per second, and causing 8% of the damage they would take to be taken by the Bear Spirit instead.
- Owl Spirit—Soaring Ground: Soaring Ground grants 30% increased evasion rating, 40% increased damage while on full life, and Onslaught to you or allies standing on it. Soaring Ground also has a 6-second base duration, unless otherwise specified.
- Stag Spirit: The Stags now leap towards enemies when using Vivid Stampede. They also now turn and hit more enemies along the way compared to the regular, non-enhanced version of the skill.
The Spirit Walker has some interesting nodes outside of the animal spirits as well. Idolatry is an ascendancy node that increases the damage of Companions by 10% and the reservation efficiency of skills by 2% per Idol inserted into gear. This comes at a price, though, because this node reduces elemental resistance by 4% for every non-Idol item (like runes) socketed into equipment.
Idols are socketable items in Path of Exile 2 that grant special bonuses. Here are some examples:
- Primate Idol: Grants 12% increased maximum life (on helmet), or Allies in your presence deal 30% increased damage (on sceptres).
- Fox Idol: Gain deflection rating equal to 10% of your total evasion rating (on body armor), or 30% increased presence area of effect (on sceptres).
- Bear Idol: 8% increased area of effect (on helmet), or Allies in your presence deal 12 to 18 added physical damage (on sceptres).
For a while, the Huntress and its existing ascendancy classes in PoE 2 can only tame certain beasts. However, that is about to change in Path of Exile 2 because the Spirit Walker can tame unique monsters, so long as they are considered “beasts.” This is possible thanks to the node, “The Natural Order.”
The Natural Order essentially empowers the “Tame Beast” skill to let the Spirit Walker force unique beasts into submission, thus taming them in the process. GGG has teased some of the unique monsters that can be tamed with the said skill, such as:

Which Spirit Walker Path Should You Choose?
With three animal spirits to choose from, which path should you choose when playing the Spirit Walker ascendancy class in Path of Exile 2?
Stag Path
Choosing the Stag Spirit to cause a stampede works with most PoE 2 Spirit Walker builds. This is because the Stags not only deal damage, but leave behind a Shocked Ground that increases the damage taken by enemies who step on it. Allocating “The Morrigan’s Guidance” takes this a step further by making the stags last longer, and thus, they are able to hit more enemies along the way.
On the surface, however, the Stag Path is more appropriate for leveling purposes only. This is because the Bear Spirit and Owl Spirit have more avenues to improve the damage and capabilities of certain Spirit Walker builds in PoE 2 in the later stages of the game.
Owl Path
The Owl Spirit is best for Spirit Walker builds that utilize a projectile-based skill as their main skill. The Twister Spirit Walker build comes to mind. Having the projectiles created by the Twister Skill be enhanced by the owl feathers can help improve clear speed significantly.
In addition, the Spirit Walker has the flexibility to try weapon types other than the Spear because the empowerment that the owl feathers provide applies to all projectiles as well. This means that you might see other Spirit Walkers use a wand (for casting spells) or a bow and quiver (to fire ranged projectiles).
Bear Path
The Bear Spirit is a true companion. Unlike the Stag Spirit, which only lasts for several seconds on the battlefield, the Bear Spirit is willing to fight alongside you in combat on a more permanent basis. In other words, it’s a more persistent and reliable companion than the Stag Spirit.
Aside from that, “The Catha’s Balance” node grants additional damage that affects your other companions as well. If you are going to take “The Natural Order” to tame unique monsters, then investing in the Bear Spirit might be a good idea.
PoE 2 Best Spirit Walker Starter Builds

Whirling Slash Twister Spirit Walker
Also known as the “Stormbringer,” this build utilizes Whirling Slash and Twister to create multiple projectiles that move around the screen, hitting and possibly eliminating many monsters in the process.
When you’re in the presence of tougher enemies, you can activate Barrage and Primal Bounty to not only fire more projectiles, but also make them move much faster.
On this build, you can experiment with the “Sacred Unity” ascendancy node to further empower the beast spirits. Keep in mind that you also have to invest in the Wild Protector, Vivid Stampede, and Primal Bounty to be able to allocate Sacred Unity.
The ‘Zookeeper’ Spirit Walker
As the name of the build implies, the Zookeeper Spirit Walker makes use of various Companions to defeat the enemy. This build has a more laid-back playstyle, where you let your animal Companions do all of the dirty work.
To create this build, you need to have a few things set up first in order for it to work. First, you need to have Sylvan's Effigy, which is a unique sceptre in Path of Exile 2 that allows you to have any number of Companions, so long as they are of different types. Sylvan's Effigy also lets you summon an Azmerian Wolf. This particular companion can lunge at enemies, inflict bleed, and maim those that are hit.
With Sylvan’s Effigy, you can have as many as six different minions at a time. Just make sure to also summon a Skeletal Cleric to keep every Companion healthy.
Aside from The Natural Order, the Zookeeper Spiritwalker takes advantage of the “Idolatry” ascendancy node to make Companions hit harder, with increased reservation efficiency as well.

- Taming unique beasts could be a challenging endeavor because their HP has to be reduced considerably for them to be tamed successfully.

Is the PoE 2 Spirit Walker Good for Beginners?
