Meta-Defining Melee Builds in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict
To understand the topic we are going to discuss today, we must first set the record straight: What are the qualities that a top melee build in PoE 2 must have?
For starters, a good melee build should have a reliable damage output. It should have enough power to decimate mobs easily because getting surrounded by enemies could mean a quick and painful death.
Aside from that, a melee build should have strong defenses. Path of Exile 2 is a relatively fast-paced ARPG, so being jumped on by monsters is a common occurrence. Having strong defenses like sturdy armor, high evasion, and good energy shield are the hallmarks of a great melee build.
While a good melee build is known to stand its ground on the battlefield, it should also have the ability to quickly get out of harm's way if needed. Boss slams in the game are quite devastating, and being at the center of such attacks can ultimately lead to one's demise.
Finally, a top-tier melee build in Path of Exile 2 should have good gear progression. It should function really well without all of the expensive items. Of course, being equipped with multiple PoE 2 Divine Orbs worth of gear should only make it better than what the build is already capable of.
Having said all of that, it is time to disclose the 7 best melee builds in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict!
7. Flicker Strike Invoker
Does the thought of teleporting to enemies in PoE 2 appeal to you? If so, the Flicker Strike Invoker will not have a hard time convincing you to try it!
At the heart of this build is the Flicker Strike, which is a melee skill that allows you to quickly go from one enemy to the next. The length of this teleportation is dictated by the number of Power Charges that you have prior to activating the skill.
Power Charges on this build are generated primarily through casting Profane Ritual—either manually or via Cast on Critical. Profane Ritual marks a corpse, dealing chaos damage over time to those nearby, and then consumes said corpse to grant a Power Charge in return.
Profane Ritual procs a lot while mapping, but what about in situations where you have to fight the map boss? Well, that is where the tech of the Rattling Sceptre, Sacrifice, and Profane Ritual comes in.
Sacrifice is pretty much self-explanatory. When activated, this allows you to sacrifice the Skeletal Warrior minions from the Rattling Sceptre to grant Power Charges. When you have sufficient charges, all there is to do from that point is to use Flicker Strike on the boss and the head honcho should be dealt with instantly (depending on your gear, of course).
This build can utilize Storm Wave or Ice Strike to gain Power Charges in conjunction with Profane Ritual while mapping. As to which skill you should choose between the two, that depends on whether you want a midrange attack ability (former) or a pure melee skill (latter). Both of them should be fine for the purpose of Power Charge generation.
In terms of gear, you could get the Collapsing Horizon to boost the damage of Storm Wave or Ice Strike. Later on, you will replace it with a high physical damage Sinister Staff (due to its high base crit) that has increased attack speed, critical damage bonus, and level of melee skills.
Major emphasis should also be placed on the helmet because it must be an INT-based helmet like the Kamasan Tiara that has a huge amount of energy shield. Having lots of ES on the helmet is needed to obtain some evasion through the "Subterfuge Mask" notable passive skill.
Your other pieces of gear must consist of pieces that contain evasion and energy shield as their main defensive layers. Having a relatively high amount of ES is necessary to survive with Chaos Inoculation.
While there are plenty of PoE 2 ascendancy classes that use Flicker Strike as their main skill, we have chosen the Invoker for this one specifically for its more balanced approach. It melds good offense with equally good defense.
I am the Blizzard, I am the Thunder, and Sunder My Enemies allow you to melt enemies quickly with critical strikes. Lead Me Through Grace takes care of defense somewhat by providing you with more Spirit. Getting tons of Spirit enables you to cast more persistent buffs, such as Herald of Thunder, Wind Dancer, Sacrifice, and Cast on Critical.
The Flicker Strike Invoker has teleported its way into our list of the best melee builds in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. Why not? This build is incredibly fun to play! With the right investment, you can clear everything in the game in under three minutes!
6. Titan Thor Mjölner
Have you seen the Marvel Movies back then and imagined yourself as Thor, the God of Thunder? Well, you do not have to envision that because this next build will allow you to bring that dream to reality!
The Titan Thor Mjölner is another top melee build in PoE 2 that lets you teleport from one point to another. However, the major difference here is that the build itself can mop the floor of nearby enemies simply with his primary skill.
Now, this build does require you to use Mjölner. This is a unique items in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict that grants the skill, Lightning Spell on Melee Hit.
Every time you use Earthquake, you will instantly be teleported a short distance. This is possible due to Lightning Warp, which, as you can already tell, is automatically used when Mjölner procs.
Because of the power that it holds, it's no wonder why Mjölnir costs more than 35 Divine Orbs at the time of writing. Not to worry, if you do not have the currency on hand, simply buy Mjölner from our PoE 2 Store.
It is important to note that Mjölner has a pretty steep INT requirement. That is why it is always paired with another unique item called The Vertex. This unique helmet significantly reduces the attribute requirements on gear and skill gems, making it an invaluable addition to the Titan Thor Mjölner build.
Aside from Earthquake, this PoE 2 build utilizes the Ancestral Warrior Totem as well. Rolling Slam is socketed into it so that the Ancestral Warrior Totem can deal with the bosses in a more efficient manner.
If Mjölner is still out of reach for you, this build can still be enjoyed using the same skill rotation; you just lose the ability to teleport with Lightning Warp until you get your hands on the mythical one-handed mace.
Despite the addition of the Smith of Kitava ascendancy class in PoE 2, this build still opts for the Titan. The reason is that the Titan can significantly increase the effect of small passive skills thanks to Hulking Form. Due to this ascendancy node, you can effectively make Earthquake's area of effect much larger than other Earthquake Builds in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict.
While the Smith of Kitava version is fantastic, some players also prefer a PoE 2 [0.2.0] Boneshatter Titan Build Guide which leans more into defensive tanking with Titan ascendancy bonuses — great if you want to survive high-damage slams. Who said that melee builds are boring? The Titan Thor Mjölner certainly begs to disagree!

5. Boneshatter Smith of Kitava
Fighting enemies at close range poses a real threat of getting killed in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0. It is very tiresome to have to respawn at a checkpoint and do things all over again. Wouldn't it be awesome if there is a build that could withstand everything that enemies throw at it, all while having the ability to retaliate and destroy them? Fortunately, the Boneshatter Smith of Kitava fits that bill perfectly!
It is not an exaggeration to call this PoE 2 build immortal. It is so sturdy that it is one of the only melee builds in the game that can facetank pinnacle bosses! This build’s impressive survivability stems from the Smith of Kitava’s ascendancy nodes.
Smith’s Masterwork is everything you need to know about it in that regard. By having enough points to spend, you can literally make normal body armor shine by imbuing special modifiers not found anywhere else!
If you like using Titan ascendancies that excel at clear speed and crowd control, also check out the PoE 2 Stampede Titan Build Guide 0.2.0 — it gives insight into how Stampede builds manage strong early-game weapon scaling and map clear.
Do you need heaps of STR to satisfy gear and skill requirements? You have Support Straps for that! How about the power to regenerate life at a pace that cannot be trumped by other items in the game? Yes, Leather Bindings does that to you!
With so many great options, you have to give props to GGG for creating such an awesome ascendancy node in Smith’s Masterwork! Of course, it does not stop there because you also have Coal Stoker and Forged in Flame to take care of the elemental resistances of this build.
So, how does the Boneshatter Smith of Kitava work? For starters, you have Leap Slam. This skill is not only used for mobility but also for priming enemies for stun. Once monsters get hit when you land (from Leap Slam), you should follow that up with Boneshatter, which will cause a massive explosion of death and destruction to your foes!
During boss fights, you will rely on three different skills. Earthshatter lets you create multiple fissures that pump up the damage of Hammer of the Gods. HoTG deals a ton of damage, though it is only usable when you stun enemies with Earthshatter.
Mace Strike is there to help you leech mana off of the enemy. This is possible due to the Soul Thief support gem. Putting Heft and Fire Infusion into the mace’s default attack empowers it to deal more damage than usual.
There are no mandatory items for this build, though there are definitely some that you can invest in if you want to achieve top numbers. First of all, invest in a corrupted Ornate Plate that has three sockets. Make sure it is of Normal Rarity, otherwise, Smith’s Masterwork cannot do its magic.
Secondly, the Infernoclasp is such a cheap belt that you can acquire, but it provides a ton of value to the build. That is mainly due to the belt’s ability to grant up to 5% maximum fire resistance, which you can definitely feel in the endgame.
However, the best investment that defines how powerful the build is would be a two-handed mace with “+ to the Level of All Melee Skills.” This modifier pretty much boosts the damage of all your skills, especially Boneshatter, Earthshatter, Leap Slam, and Hammer of the Gods.
There is a reason why the Boneshatter Smith of Kitava has been a popular melee build from the start of Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict until now. It is just a reliable melee fighter capable of withstanding anything the game throws at it. If this is something you are looking for, then the Boneshatter Smith of Kitava will certainly not disappoint!
4. Whirling Slash Amazon
With so many builds in PoE 2 TTE League that use Lightning Spear these days, it is a breath of fresh air to play something that does not rely on the said skill for once. The Whirling Slash Amazon is a great alternative to the popular Lightning Spear Amazon, and this is something that you must try if you are into melee builds for sure!
This build stacks a ton of area of effect nodes to create such a massive whirlwind. If you enjoy smash-style melee builds with big weapon swings, you might also like the PoE 2 Sunder Smith of Kitava Build Guide — it shows how Sunder variants fare versus high durability and burst setups in melee meta. Now, there are slight variations to the build that we will get into in a bit.
The main version uses two different Whirling Slash setups. One setup has Magnified Effect and Expanse, and the other one has all of the support gems that boost damage, including Martial Tempo, Execute, and so on.
Alternatively, the other variant of this build utilizes Whirlwind Lance to do the same thing. You throw Whirlwind Lance on the ground and use the whirlwind it creates to destroy map monsters and bosses.
Whirling Slash is the ability that you would use once the initial whirlwind has been established. As long as you do not get out of its area of effect, the whirlwind will “follow” you wherever you go. Simply use Whirling Slash as you move your mouse pointer in the direction you are headed.
When it comes to gear, you should definitely invest in a Seaglass Spear that contains physical damage, flat lightning damage, accuracy, and attack speed. The Seaglass Spear is the preferred weapon base as it has tons of critical hit chance on its own.
Next, get the Wake of Destruction. Although these boots only grant a 10% movement speed boost, they increase your damage thanks to that “Lightning Damage to Attacks” mod. More importantly, Wake of Destruction drops Shocked Ground as you move, affecting nearby enemies with Shock when they step on the detrimental ground effect.
As you progress through the game, you can opt for The Deepest Tower, which will unlock the build’s true potential. With this unique helmet equipped, you will deal massive amounts of damage with Whirling Slash! Of course, do not forget to allocate the Stars Aligned, Finishing Blows, and Finality notable passive skills to get the full effect.
The Amazon’s main selling point compared to the other ascendancy classes in PoE 2 is her ability to gain so much crit even on a minimal investment. With nodes like Critical Strike and Penetrate, you only need a good weapon to know how incredible the Whirling Slash Amazon is!
You might need some time to get used to the build’s playstyle, but once you’ve mastered it, the Whirling Slash Amazon is one of the best melee builds in Path of Exile 2 in terms of raw power and enjoyment!
3. Bleed Blood Mage
If you don’t want a one-dimensional melee build, then you are likely going to be interested in the Bleed Blood Mage. This build embraces what the spear weapon was made for—a hybrid playstyle that utilizes both ranged and melee skills to kill enemies.
The reason for the hybrid approach is that Lightning Spear is used for mapping, while Rake and Blood Hunt are mostly for dealing with bosses and rare monsters. Lightning Spear does a pretty good job of clearing out the trash mobs, so it’s just too hard to pass up.
Rake and Blood Hunt are two complementary skills that work perfectly with each other. The former guarantees bleeding on enemies, and the latter deals a ton of damage when the target has lost a lot of blood.
Since bleeding damage in PoE 2 is affected by the hit that caused it, you want to land critical hits consistently. For this reason, you will equip the Tangletongue, which greatly boosts your crit chance when equipped. Do not forget to allocate crit nodes on the passive tree if you want to destroy everything that is stupid enough to get in your way.
When you reach the endgame and you feel that the Tangletongue by itself can no longer cut it, then you have a couple of upgrades you can take. The first is Crown of Eyes, which is a unique helmet that amplifies your attacks by improving spell damage. This is often paired with the second item called Threaded Light.
To get the most out of Threaded Light, make sure to have Spirit on both your body armor and amulet (and high rolls at that). Keep in mind that Crown of Eyes and Threaded Light should be equipped together. Otherwise, equipping them on their own won’t make sense.
Now, you are probably wondering why you should go for the Blood Mage rather than the Amazon for this build. Well, that is really simple. The Blood Mage is a specialist at dishing out so much pain via bleeding damage. This is due to Blood Barbs, which enable your builds to be aggravated (and thus deal extra damage) as though they are moving.
On top of that, the Blood Barbs ascendancy node makes Lightning Spear contribute to bleeding magnitude. In other words, it makes bleeding damage on enemies more painful than the initial hit that caused the said ailment.
Another reason to pick Blood Mage over Amazon is that she possesses Gore Spike—an ascendancy node that amplifies crit damage to absurd levels! Just make sure to have as many life rolls on your gear to take full advantage of this.
With all things considered, the Bleed Blood Mage can definitely bring a world of hurt to your enemies!
2. Primal Strikes Amazon
Another hybrid melee build in PoE 2 that is worth checking out! The Primal Strikes Amazon combines the screen-clearing power of Lightning Spear with the insane damage output of Primal Strikes.
Primal Strikes can only deal a boatload of damage if you are hitting an enemy that is affected by Shock. Fortunately, the elemental ailment in question can easily be inflicted with the use of Lightning Spear that is enhanced with Conduction Support.
If you haven’t used the skill before, Primal Strikes prompts you to perform a devastating three-hit melee combo. When hitting a Shocked enemy, each hit conjures a Spirit that deals damage. After performing the first two slashes, the third strike conjures a stampede of spirits, where the bulk of the damage comes from!
Take note that after connecting with the second hit, the enemy usually gets knocked back a fair distance from its original location, making you miss the third slash as a result. In that case, you can tap the hotkey for Primal Strikes for a split second each time to avoid this issue.
When fighting bosses, relying solely on Lightning Spear to inflict Shock may not give the most consistent results. Hence, you could incorporate either Thunderous Leap or Storm Lance for that matter.
Storm Lance continuously hits enemies for its entire duration (6 seconds). Put Conduction Support from Lightning Spear to Storm Lance if you want it to work its magic.
Alternatively, you can go for Thunderous Leap, which is empowered by Shocking Leap Support. With the said support gem inserted, Thunderous Leap leaves a shocked ground, allowing you to deal maximum damage with Primal Strikes as long as the enemy is within the ground’s area of effect.
The Primal Strikes Amazon works best if it is fitted with Tangletongue and Hand of Wisdom and Action. When you have the HoWA in your possession, make sure to improve INT as much as possible. You can get intelligence from basically every piece of gear, including the helmet, boots, and body armor, among others.
If you have the combo of Tangletongue and Hand of Wisdom and Action, you don’t need the Penetrate ascendancy node anymore. Instead, opt for Predatory Instinct, Elemental Infusion, and Stalking Panther.
The Primal Strikes Amazon may not be as popular as the Lightning Spear build, but it is high time that we give it the attention it deserves for being an awesome and fun-to-play melee build in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0!
1. Wind Serpent’s Fury Deadeye
And then, there’s one! The Wind Serpent’s Fury Deadeye is arguably the best melee build in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict! Why is that, you ask? Well, it’s simple: its primary skill can destroy T4 pinnacles in one shot!
That’s right! Wind Serpent’s Fury can eliminate pinnacle bosses with the right gear, of course. Tangletongue is a common fixture among spear-wielding builds in PoE 2, so we won’t explain its power even further. Instead, we are going to discuss the other items you could invest in.
The Sacred Flame is a popular choice because of its ability to grant up to 60% extra fire damage. Plus, equipping this unique sceptre takes care of your fire resistance via Purity of Fire!
If a well-rolled Purity of Fire is out of your reach (for now), you could opt for an Omen Sceptre with a high-level Malice skill. Malice is a persistent aura that continuously applies stacks of Critical Weakness to nearby enemies, making it so much easier for you to land critical hits!
Then, you have the Beacon of Azis. This unique amulet is best known for its power to make critical hits ignore monster elemental resistances. Although Wind Serpent’s Fury is not an elemental skill, it does deal elemental damage when you wear gloves that have added fire/cold/lightning damage to attacks.
It is important to note that positioning is key if you want to deal the maximum damage with Wind Serpent’s Fury. You have to orient your character in a way that forces the boss to be pushed back to the wall when using the skill. Doing so will deal extra damage.
If you read the description of Wind Serpent’s Fury, you will know that the skill actually requires Frenzy Charges to use. That is why you are going to go for the Deadeye ascendancy class because of her Avidity and Thrilling Chase ascendancy nodes.
We have a fantastic PoE 2 Wind Serpent’s Fury Deadeye guide you can check out for all the information you need about the build. Suffice it to say, it demolishes the opposition without breaking a sweat!

Final Thoughts
These seven melee builds represent the best of what Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict has to offer. The Flicker Strike Invoker and Titan Thor Mjölner are the best builds in terms of mobility. It is closely followed by Whirling Slash Amazon, particularly when you have an incredibly high attack speed.
If you want a more slow and deliberate approach to killing monsters, there's the Boneshatter Smith of Kitava for that. This build not only slays enemies on a regular basis, but also an impenetrable one with enough defense to facetank monsters for days.
The Bleed Blood Mage makes bleed builds in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0 appealing. With its potent mix of melee (Rake and Blood Hunt) and ranged attacks (Lightning Spear), you have a build that destroys everything without a hitch.
If you are tired of the regular Lightning Spear build, the Primal Strikes Amazon is a breath of fresh air. By inflicting Shock on enemies prior to the assault, you have a build that performs admirably well even while in melee range.
Of course, there's the Wind Serpent's Fury Deadeye. This melee build's insane damage output makes your dream of one-shotting T4 pinnacle bosses in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict a reality!
