PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0 has been released for over a month now, and a lot has changed in that span. While some of the best builds back then are still viable now, plenty of new options have emerged. So, if you are looking for the best builds in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict, come! We invite you to read our updated picks and see what's hot this time around!
Of course, the top builds should be accompanied by the best gear. If you want to deck out your character with the finest items in the game, be sure to come and pay our PoE 2 Store a visit.
Best Builds in The Third Edict [0.3.0]
The Third Edict (TTE) League has introduced various changes that have made certain builds possible. As such, we're going to highlight these builds in ascending order, so that you know which one is the most popular according to the PoE 2 community.
Even though some builds are ranked lower than others, this is not to say that they are bad. In fact, all of the PoE 2 builds you will see here are definitely worth your time and investment. It's just a matter of telling you which one is the consistent top performer among the rest.
With that out of the way, here are the best builds in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict:
Essence Drain Contagion Lich
Damage Over Time (DoT) builds are typically deemed as average by the PoE 2 community, but the first entry on our list begs to differ. The Essence Drain Contagion Lich is an excellent mapper who is capable of killing enemies with a potent mix of chaos skills, including the titular Essence Drain, followed by Contagion and Dark Effigy.
Essence Drain is a projectile skill that inflicts a powerful chaos damage over time debuff on the enemy that is hit by it. Contagion is the one that spreads the powerful effect of Essence Drain to nearby enemies. In most cases, Contagion is not needed while mapping, especially when you have your character equipped with the best gear for the build.
Dark Effigy is only there to help you with single-target damage, particularly when you are going against a tough rare monster, a map boss, or a pinnacle boss like T4 Xesht and Arbiter of Ash.
The thing we love the most about the Essence Drain Contagion Lich is that it can be used as an early PoE 2 Currency farmer because all you need are rare items with the proper modifiers, such as increased chaos damage, increased spell damage, and + to level of all chaos spell skills, among others.
As for the ascendancy nodes, Eldritch Empowerment grants a huge damage boost, making it the ideal first Lich node to take when playing this build. The next four points should be used to allocate Eternal Life to ensure that you won’t die as long as you still have at least one point of energy shield left.
In the endgame, Crystalline Phylactery boosts a jewel that you have socketed into the special slot. This essentially enhances its effect, so it’s like having two of the same jewel for the price of one!
Despite being a DoT build in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0, its playstyle is actually quite easy. All you have to do is use Essence Drain for mapping and sometimes supplement it with Contagion if there are multiple monsters on the screen. Dark Effigy is planted when fighting bosses, and that’s about it!
If you want to learn more about the “Chaos DoT Lich,” you can check out our full build guide for the Essence Drain Contagion Lich Build Guide, which goes deeper summary to help you optimize this DoT + spread-based playstyle.
Lightning Arrow Deadeye
How does the Lightning Arrow Deadeye perform in Patch 0.3.0? Well, the version of the PoE 2 Lightning Arrow Deadeye that you see today is now built to land critical hits more consistently. The non-crit version is no longer viable, considering that GGG has effectively removed half of the jewel sockets before. This means that it is not feasible to rely solely on jewels to improve damage output. Adding to that, GGG also nerfed the “Increased Bonuses from Equipped Quiver” mod substantially, so there is no more incentive to stack it as high as possible.
That is why the only best option for a would-be Lightning Arrow Deadeye is to steer it towards having a high critical hit chance, coupled with an incredibly good critical damage bonus.
Lightning Rod is still utilized for single-target damage, though the playstyle of this build has changed in that you now have to actively fire at the planted lightning rods for maximum damage.
In addition, using Barrage to effectively enable you to plant more lightning rods in one go is the most effective way of decimating a map or pinnacle boss. Orb of Storms can be used, but only for the purpose of granting life, mana, or rage via Font of Blood, Font of Mana, and Font of Rage, respectively.
It is also worth noting that you can now use the new Rhoa Mount to traverse the map. When mounted, you can use Lightning Arrow and Lightning Rod without suffering a movement penalty. In other words, you retain your original speed while firing your primary skills!
If you have played the Lightning Arrow Deadeye in PoE 2 before, just know that the build still performs admirably well. You just have to make some changes, especially if you were playing the non-crit version of the build.
While Lightning Arrow Deadeye focuses on critical hits and high damage scaling, players who prefer stacking raw attributes might want to explore the Attribute Stacker Gemling Legionnaire Build Guide. That build emphasizes Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence scaling to achieve both offense and defense synergy, an interesting contrast to more traditional crit builds.
Boneshatter Smith of Kitava
When we saw the ascendancy nodes of the Smith of Kitava in PoE 2, we knew that it would be an instant hit even before the launch of the TTE League. Lo and behold, we were right! The Smith of Kitava, known for its defensive capabilities, is one of the most popular builds in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict.
The consistent frontrunner as far as this ascendancy class is concerned is the Boneshatter Smith of Kitava. When you dissect this build, it is not hard to understand why it’s popular.
First of all, this build uses Leap Slam to prime enemies for stun. Follow that up with a well-placed Boneshatter, and you have monsters die immediately after.
Additionally, most Boneshatter Smith of Kitava builds in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0 are using a couple of Ancestral Warrior Totems. One uses the Rolling Slam as the totem is known to attack faster with it, and the other is often paired with Sunder, which guarantees a critical hit when the enemy has its armor fully broken by a prior attack.
While the Smith of Kitava does possess a couple of offensive nodes, they are usually not taken as part of a build because they need better tuning. Hopefully, GGG will improve upon these nodes in future updates.
For now, you can settle with the Boneshatter Smith of Kitava, which is built like a tank, with the combination of ascendancy nodes that include Coal Stoker, Forged in Flame, and several nodes from Smith’s Masterwork.
So, what is this build best known for? This is one of the ideal builds for SSF because getting all of the necessary pieces of gear is quite easy. Sure, you can buy a high physical damage weapon for better results, though that is only if you want to min-max it.
Spark Blood Mage
Spark was always synonymous with the Stormweaver in the early days of Path of Exile 2. The Stormweaver ascendancy class has access to elemental damage-related nodes, such as “Scouring Winds” and “Strike Twice,” which is why it was not difficult to put these two together. However, there is a new queen in town, and that is the Spark Blood Mage.
The main distinction between the Blood Mage variant over the Stormweaver as it relates to the Spark skill is that the former can easily achieve a 100% critical hit chance. This is, of course, thanks to the Blood Mage’s “Sunder the Flesh” ascendancy node.
Aside from that, the Blood Mage has more survivability due to Vitality Siphon. To understand why it is so overpowered, just know that life leech in Path of Exile 2 was originally only possible when dealing physical damage. With Vitality Siphon allocated, a portion of your spell damage can leech life as well.
Since the Spark Blood Mage has a very easy time critically hitting enemies, you can use something like the Choir of the Storm for more damage. The Lightning Bolt skill granted by Choir of the Storm is cast every time Spark critically wounds an enemy. In the endgame, you will feel that this happens quite consistently!
There is also a version of the build that utilizes the Sacred Flame. This is a unique item in PoE 2 that provides a whopping 60% extra fire damage. Talk about total annihilation!
If you are interested in trying the Spark Blood Mage, make sure to acquaint yourself with POB 2. This is because this nifty program tells you exactly how high your critical hit chance is (yes, it’s more accurate than the in-game tooltip). You only need 100% crit chance, and anything more is just superfluous. Once you have achieved that, you can remove some of the crit chance nodes on the passive tree and replace them with something else that works for you.
Where the Spark Blood Mage shines is in fighting pinnacle bosses. You can down a pinnacle boss in seconds just by utilizing Sigil of Power, Orb of Storms, and Spark together.
The only reason why the Spark Blood Mage is not ranked higher is that you need to be at least level 78 for it to be fully operational. Other than that, you cannot go wrong with this PoE 2 build!
Flicker Strike Invoker
If you are looking for a fun build, then the Flicker Strike Invoker is indeed one of the best in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. We are actually quite pleased with its performance, given that it also uses Ice Strike for dealing with regular monsters.
Flicker Strike is actually not a new skill, as it exists in the original game as well. However, the PoE 2 version of Flicker Strike is different in that how long you can stay in this mode depends on how many Power Charges you have accumulated prior to its activation. And yes, it uses Power Charges, not Frenzy Charges like in PoE 1.
Anyway, to generate Power Charges, you will use a spell called Profane Ritual. This requires corpses for you to gain Power Charges, so you need to equip a rare Rattling Sceptre to conjure some Skeletal Warriors. These minions will be sacrificed in order to perform the Profane Ritual, though this setup is only needed for boss fights.
This build starts out with high evasion and a considerable amount of life. In the endgame, you could transition to the Chaos Inoculation (CI) variant, granting chaos damage immunity at the cost of removing 99% of your HP. Don’t worry, by this point, you will have more than enough energy shield to help you survive.
So, why the Invoker? This ascendancy class is perfect for Flicker Strike because of Sunder My Enemies—a node that empowers critical hits to ignore enemy monster elemental resistance (but only up to zero, and not below that).
Another reason why the Invoker is good for this build is that it has access to Lead Me Through Grace to gain a substantial amount of Spirit. And yes, you definitely need more Spirit than your typical PoE 2 build to run the Flicker Strike Invoker.
Everything sounds good, but what are its drawbacks? Well, there are only a couple of notable issues. First, this build requires at least several Power Charges to destroy bosses. Second, and most important of all, Flicker Strike itself prompts your character to initiate a series of attacks that are nauseating to look at.
If you are okay with the skill’s animation, then we do not see any other reason why you shouldn’t try the Flicker Strike Invoker in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict.
Bleed Blood Mage
One of the headlining features of Path of Exile 2 in the previous league is a new weapon type—the spear. Now, unlike other weapons in the game, the spear is best used when you combine melee skills with ranged attacks. Well, that is the core premise of this next build in our list, the Bleed Blood Mage.
For the ranged portion of the build, you have Lightning Spear. This skill is mainly used for mapping purposes only. And no, you do not spam Lightning Spear until every last enemy is destroyed. Instead, you hurl a spear, walk for a bit, and then throw another one. The reason for this odd playstyle is that you want to gain extra lightning damage from the new support gem—Volt.
With the support gem equipped, you will see a special icon in the top-left corner of the screen that indicates how many Volt stacks you have. When you use Lightning Spear at max stacks of 30, the said skill will be given 15% extra lightning damage as a result, which is actually more substantial in the endgame than what it says on the tin.
For your bossing setup and the melee portion of the Bleed Blood Mage, there is Rake and Blood Hunt. Rake allows you to inflict bleeding on enemies 100% of the time. Blood Hunt is more of a finisher and is only meant to be used when the main target has lost quite a lot of blood from Rake.
Now, the Bleed Blood Mage requires three core unique items for it to work its magic. Chief among them is Tangletongue—a unique spear that allows you to deal heaps of critical damage due to its effect.
Crown of Eyes is the next one. With this unique helmet equipped, you can get “increased spell damage” and convert that to attack damage. That is easily achieved by equipping a well-rolled caster focus. You also have the option of allocating spell damage nodes on the passive tree if you so desire.
Then, you have Ingenuity. Even though Ingenuity is still nerfed in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0, it still holds up pretty well. Its main purpose is to amplify the modifiers on your equipped rings. Speaking of which, the prefixes of these rings should be physical damage and two elemental damage mods (preferably cold and lightning damage).
If you are wondering why there is a need for improving elemental damage on this build, it is to maximize the effect of Blood Barbs, particularly the part where elemental damage contributes to bleeding magnitude as well.
The Blood Mage’s “Gore Spike” ascendancy node fits perfectly with the theme of the build. By stacking HP as high as you can, you will also increase your critical damage, which works for both Lightning Spear and Rake.
The Bleed Blood Mage is quite popular in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict because it adds another layer of damage that is not possible with any other ascendancy class in the game. But, what do you think? Do you agree with how famous this particular PoE 2 build is? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
Skeletal Storm Mage Lich
Minion builds have been rebalanced in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0. Although they are not as overpowered as they were, minions are still quite good, especially if you know which combination of skills, support gems, items, and ascendancies you should use.
That said, the Skeletal Storm Mage Lich is an awesome PoE 2 build that you should definitely try, particularly if you like the minion playstyle.
This build uses the Skeletal Storm Mage as its primary skill. This is one of the only minion skills in the game that didn’t receive any downsides in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict.
The Skeletal Storm Mage Lich performs well when you equip multiple items that improve the level of the said minion skill. With that in mind, the Sunsplinter is an awesome choice because you can have “+4 to Level of All Lightning Skills” if you are lucky with a Vaal Orb corruption.
So, how does the Lich factor into the equation? Well, the Lich is great for the Skeletal Storm Mage primarily because of Necromantic Conduit—an ascendancy node that provides heaps of chaos damage via Unholy Might. If you are happy with the results, you could spend two more points to allocate “Blackened Heart,” which increases the magnitude of Unholy Might by 4%. It gets even better when you have tons of mana to work with!
Minion enjoyers will really love the Skeletal Storm Mage Lich. This build can summon multiple types of minions to take full advantage of the new Muster support gem. If you like the idea of having a full minion army at your disposal, then the Skeletal Storm Mage Lich is very easy to recommend.

Wind Serpent’s Fury Deadeye
Here we have yet another spear build in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict, but we promise you that it is worth your time. The Wind Serpent’s Fury Deadeye deals a significant amount of damage against bosses, making it one of the premier boss killers currently in the game.
Wind Serpent’s Fury is a spear skill that can only be used when you have Frenzy Charges. You might already have an idea of where we are going with this because the Deadeye is the only ascendancy class that is best for this job.
You see, the Deadeye has access to Avidity and Thrilling Chase—two ascendancy nodes that have something to do with Frenzy Charges. More specifically, Avidity allows you to gain the maximum number of Frenzy Charges just by using a certain combo, while Thrilling Chase effectively doubles the damage of Wind Serpent’s Fury every time it is used.
If you are wondering what the Frenzy Charge combo is, it is basically applying Sniper’s Mark on the enemy and landing a critical hit with Spear Stab (yes, the default melee attack for spears).
Since being able to critically hit an enemy is of utmost importance for this build, there is only one weapon you should use, and that is the ever-reliable Tangletongue. At higher levels, this particular weapon will have its damage fall-off really hard.
To prevent that from happening, you should equip the Sacred Flame in the off-hand to gain extra fire damage. If you opt for the Cast on Critical setup (which automates Sniper’s Mark application), then use an Omen Sceptre with increased Spirit instead.

Lightning Spear Amazon
Even in the new expansion, the Lightning Spear Amazon is still the best build in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. This is because it is one of the most flexible builds out there, and you have the option of how you want to develop it into the endgame.
For starters, you have Lightning Spear. This, along with the Amazon's Critical Strike and Penetrate ascendancy nodes, can deal huge amounts of damage that can obliterate multiple enemies with a single click of a button.
If you want to use supplementary skills, you can add a couple of viable ones depending on what you want to achieve. For a pure ranged version of the Lightning Spear Amazon, you could utilize Storm Lance to consistently Shock enemies, allowing you to deal even more damage with your attacks.
For a more hybrid approach, however, there is Primal Strikes. This is a melee skill that prompts you to stab and slash enemies with your spear three times, with each one conjuring the power of Azmeri Spirits to deal considerable damage.
To emphasize the flexibility of this build even further, you have a number of ways to develop the Lightning Spear Amazon depending on what you want to do with it. If you want it to be a really fast mapper (with the aid of the Queen of the Forest) that can evade almost every attack, you can allocate the "Stalking Panther" ascendancy node to improve your evasion rating dramatically.
If you want it to be a legit boss killer, you should put ascendancy points to Predatory Instinct and Elemental Infusion. Both of these work in tandem to provide more oomph with every use of Lightning Spear, Storm Lance, and Primal Strikes.
While the other builds are certainly fun to use, the Lightning Spear Amazon has consistently shown that it is fun to play, easy to build, and can take on any content in the game. These are the reasons why the Lightning Spear Amazon is the top 1 build in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict!

Final Thoughts
A lot can happen in one month in PoE 2. There are certainly a lot of amazing additions to our list, including the Spark Blood Mage and Flicker Strike Invoker.
Lightning Arrow Deadeye still performs admirably well, with the power to destroy regular map monsters and bosses alike. Of course, the Wind Serpent’s Fury is leaps and bounds better than the LA Deadeye, though it requires a weapon that’s different from what the Ranger Class in PoE 2 is typically accustomed to.
Then you have the Lightning Spear Amazon. This was the top pick back then, and it is still the best build in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. Its amazing clear speed, coupled with its insane flexibility, makes it a frontrunner in every aspect. Whether you want a great mapper or an even more awesome boss killer, the Lightning Spear Amazon can take on any challenge without an issue!
