Do you want to breeze through maps armed with lightning-infused arrows to electrocute enemies to death in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict? If so, you might want to take a look at the Lightning Arrow Deadeye.

This build is capable of demolishing six-mod rare monsters and those that come from Breach quite easily thanks to a combination of skills and mechanics. The Lightning Arrow Deadeye is also strong against pinnacle content, so much so that it’s often being used by Trial of the Sekhemas carries due to its insane power and mobility.

If you’re evaluating Lightning Arrow Deadeye against other meta builds, our 10 Best Path of Exile 2 Builds in Early Access list highlights alternatives that excel in damage, mobility, and clear speed — giving you more perspectives if you want to try something different.

Why Play the Lightning Arrow Deadeye in Patch 0.3.0?

The Lightning Arrow Deadeye has so much potential. You can play it as a starter build that will allow you to farm copious amounts of PoE 2 Currency to use on your other characters (if you wish to do so in the future).

This build utilizes two skills to eliminate the enemy. The first is, of course, the titular Lightning Arrow. This skill deals direct damage, converting 40% of your physical damage to lightning damage when it hits the enemy. After hitting the target, Lightning Arrow fires lightning beams that chain and hit nearby enemies in the process.

The second skill that you will use quite frequently is Lightning Rod. What this does is it prompts you to launch several arrows into the sky, which will land shortly after. Once they’re on the ground, they create bursts of lightning whenever other skills chain to them.

Lightning Arrow was untouched in Patch 0.3.0 However, Lightning Rod got rebalanced in that increasing the gem's quality now results in an increased chance in creating an additional burst (instead of increasing the AoE of the skill). Although you could see this as a bit of a nerf in terms of its AoE, the higher rate of lightning bursts is more beneficial damage-wise.

While there are still two versions of this build in the past, we will now cover the crit version of the Lightning Arrow Deadeye to account for the changes made in PoE 2 Patch 0.2.0. We will focus specifically on passive nodes that have anything to do with improving critical hit chance, as well as a critical damage bonus.

Take note that the Lightning Arrow Deadeye does require a bit of investment, especially when you add the more expensive jewels. Each piece of gear that’s needed by this Path of Exile 2 build is going to be discussed further later in the build guide, so stick around to learn more! Check our PoE 2 Divine Orbs bundle if you need some currency to purchase gear.

This build utilizes skills that deal elemental damage, but why does it go for the Deadeye ascendancy class instead of the Pathfinder? Well, even though this ascendancy class does not have any elemental damage nodes, it does have passive skills that improve projectiles in some way.

Since enemies in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict are more likely to get close to you, allocating Point Blank makes sense. This is because it increases your projectile damage significantly against targets that are within close proximity.

Endless Munitions is pretty much a no-brainer for Ranger Builds in PoE 2 Rise of the Abyssals League. Why? This ascendancy node just straight-up lets you fire an additional projectile without any downsides. Couple this with the new Gemini Bow (formerly known as the Expert Dualstring Bow) and you’ll be firing three lightning arrows and lightning rods at a time!

Gathering Winds enables you to gain a stackable buff known as Tailwind. This works a bit differently in PoE 2 than in PoE 1, where Tailwind provides 3% skill speed, 1% movement speed, and 15% evasion rating per stack, up to a maximum of 10 stacks. If you’re wondering what skill speed is, it basically makes your skills work a lot smoother like being able to fire Lightning Arrow faster.

The Ranger class is a proficient mapper that is capable of eliminating monsters easily. However, it has one flaw—it’s a bit squishy compared to the Warrior or the Mercenary. Fortunately, the Deadeye can somehow rectify that thanks to Wind Ward, which is an ascendancy node that reduces the damage you take depending on your Tailwind stacks.

That said, you should take the ascendancy nodes in the following order:

  1. Gathering Winds
  2. Point Blank
  3. Endless Munitions
  4. Wind Ward

In terms of gearing the Lightning Arrow Deadeye, look for any of the following modifiers:

  • Increased Physical Damage
  • Added Physical Damage
  • Added Lightning Damage
  • Added Cold Damage to Attacks
  • + to Level of All Projectile Skills
  • Increased Attack Speed
  • Bow Attacks Fire Additional Arrows
  • Increased Critical Hit Chance
  • Increased Critical Damage Bonus (Crit mods should only be when playing the crit version of the build)
  • Increased Projectile Speed (with Feathered Fletching)
  • Increased Evasion
  • Increased Energy Shield (if wearing hybrid evasion-ES gear)
  • + to Dexterity
  • + to Intelligence
  • + to All Attributes
  • Fire/Cold/Lightning Resistance
  • + to All Elemental Resistance

Playstyle

The Lightning Arrow Deadeye is great for both beginners and PoE 2 veterans alike. You simply use Lightning Arrow if you want to kill regular map monsters. When you are surrounded, utilize Barrage and then Lightning Rod to plant more on the ground at a time. Once a sufficient number of lightning rods are planted on the ground, fire Lightning Arrows at them, which should make quick work of any map monster out there.

In PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0, you can now sprint to get yourself into advantageous positions. Furthermore, you can now insert as many copies of a support gem as you want, so you could utilize Deliberation Support and the like to further improve your damage output!

Now, you can still use Orb of Storms in this setup, though it is primarily to grant more attack damage via Rage (given by the Font of Rage support gem).

Lightning Arrow Deadeye Gear Recommendations

When it comes to gear, you can make the Lightning Arrow Deadeye work admirably so long as you have the right modifiers. We will tell you which modifiers you need to look for so that you’ll get the most out of this PoE 2 build.

Keep in mind that you don’t necessarily have to copy the exact same modifiers on each item; just a combination of several modifiers should be enough for a piece of gear to be viable. Furthermore, if you really want the best mods available, you will need a ton of PoE 2 Divine Orbs for that, so temper your expectations if you don’t have an unlimited budget.

Anyway, without further ado, here are the best items for the Lightning Arrow Deadeye in Patch 0.3.0:

Weapon

The Expert Dualstring Bow in the past has now been renamed to the Gemini Bow in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. It still has the same property as that of the previously named weapon, so only the name has changed in Patch 0.3.0.

Having said that, you want your Gemini Bow to have a couple of physical damage modifiers along with some added lightning damage. The reason why this weapon should still have physical damage modifiers is that Lightning Arrow and Lightning Rod convert physical damage to lightning damage with every use. This means that the higher your total physical damage is, the more devastating your primary skills become.

For the suffixes, you want attack speed, level of projectile skills, and mana per enemy killed. The last mod is a lifesaver, especially when mapping. That’s because utilizing Lightning Rod, Orb of Storms, and Cast on Shock can severely deplete your mana pool in a few seconds if you don’t have the said modifier.

Take note that the projectile skills mod also raises the mana cost of your skills. So, if you find yourself struggling to maintain mana, you can replace that mod with dexterity instead.

While the Widowhail hasn’t been nerfed in PoE 2 Patch 0.3.0, the quiver bonuses on the passive tree did get some changes in The Third Edict expansion. Suffice it to say, relying solely on your quiver to get your Lightning Arrow and Lightning Rod to astronomical levels is no longer viable. That is why we can no longer recommend Widowhail for the Lightning Arrow Deadeye in Patch 0.3.0.

Quiver

What constitutes a good quiver for the Lightning Arrow Deadeye? Well, this quiver must have attack speed, projectile speed, and cold damage to attacks. Projectile Speed is turned into bow damage due to Feathered Fletching. If you have a 45% increased projectile speed on your quiver, for example, that translates to a proportional increase in bow damage!

Since you will no longer use Herald of Ice on this PoE 2 build, having “Adds Cold Damage to Attacks” is no longer needed. You will replace the said modifier with “Adds Lightning Damage to Attacks” instead to further amplify the damage of your primary skills.

Despite the changes made to quiver bonuses on the passive tree, in addition to the fact that jewel sockets have been significantly reduced in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict, having “+2 to Level of All Projectiles” is still worth it. That is why it is still part of the modifiers on your endgame quiver.

Our version of the Lightning Arrow Deadeye now scales critical hit chance and critical damage bonus because the non-crit version sucks now due to the adjustments made in this league. If you are able to hit over 45% crit chance, then you will feel that this version of the build performs better than prior to Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict.

As for the quiver base, go for the Primed Quiver for increased attack speed or the Visceral Quiver if your critical hit chance is below 45%.

Body Armor

A pure evasion body armor like the new Wyrmscale Coat is actually very good for the Lightning Arrow Deadeye. You can have a couple of evasion mods here, as well as elemental or chaos resistance.

Because energy shield’s effectiveness has been reduced somewhat in Patch 0.3.0, we can no longer recommend the hybrid evasion/energy shield-based body armor for the Lightning Arrow Deadeye. Fortunately, there is a unique body armor that you can try and it’s called Hyrri’s Ire.

This particular body armor has that rare attack modifier that you cannot find on any other body armor in the game. Besides that, Hyrri’s Ire acts as a pseudo-Acrobatics keystone because it enables you to evade all hits if you have not been hit in the past four seconds.

If you are interested, you can buy Hyrri’s Ire in our PoE 2 Store at any time!

Helmet

Grab a high-evasion helmet like the new Trapper Hood. Ideally, this piece of gear contains life, evasion, and some resistance mods (whichever you need for your character). The last modifier should be increased critical hit chance because you want to attain at least 45% to land critical hits more consistently.

Gloves

Hand of Wisdom and Action was supposed to be the best-in-slot gloves for the Lightning Arrow Deadeye. However, these gloves have been gutted in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict, so stacking DEX and INT is no longer feasible.

So, instead of HoWA, you will use the new Barbed Bracers, which is a pair of new rare gloves that have the highest amount of base evasion rating in the game. Include other tasty modifiers, such as added lightning damage to attacks, maximum life, rarity, and increased attack speed. If you can get a pair of gloves that have a critical damage bonus mod, then that would be better!

Boots

The boots for the Lightning Arrow Deadeye are not special. However, they do have modifiers that affect survivability, such as increased evasion, maximum life, and elemental/chaos resistance. Increased movement speed is non-negotiable, so you get 35% for the endgame boots without a doubt!

Grab the new Dragonscale Boots because of its high base evasion rating compared to the other boots in the game.

Amulet

The amulet is the only slot on the Lightning Arrow Deadeye that contains additional Spirit, so make it count! Make sure to achieve 60 Spirit on the amulet (by having 15 on the implicit or 45 on the explicit) if you can. Besides Spirit, you can have increased item rarity, life, and critical damage bonus on the amulet as well.

If your budget permits it, the amulet can roll “+3 to Level of All Projectile Skills.” This modifier is not mandatory at all. However, it is definitely something that you can work towards, especially if you like playing this Path of Exile 2 build.

So, what notable passive skill should you instill in the amulet? Well, there are several amazing options, including:

  • Blurred Motion
    • 5% Increased Attack Speed
    • 10% Increased Accuracy Rating
    • 5% Increased Dexterity
    • Distilled Despair, Distilled Paranoia, Distilled Ire
  • Overwhelming Strike
    • 20% Increased Critical Hit Chance for Attacks
    • 20% Increased Critical Damage Bonus for Attack Damage
    • 20% More Stun Build-up with Critical Hits
    • Distilled Despair, Distilled Envy, Distilled Disgust
  • Sand in the Eyes
    • 10% Increased Attack Speed
    • 15% Chance to Blind Enemies on Hit with Attacks
    • 3x Distilled Despair
  • Stormcharged
    • 40% Increased Elemental Damage if You’ve Dealt a Critical Hit Recently
    • 20% Increased Critical Hit Chance
    • Distilled Fear, Distilled Fear, Distilled Envy
  • Wild Storm
    • 15% More Maximum Lightning Damage
    • Distilled Isolation, Distilled Fear, Distilled Isolation

Rings

Chaos resistance is often a common problem among people who play the Lightning Arrow Deadeye. So, to help address that, you can wear a couple of Amethyst Rings that also have chaos resistance on their explicit modifier.

In the endgame, switch to a Breach Ring that still has chaos resistance and probably another resistance modifier if you need to address one of your elemental resistances. The ring’s prefixes have changed in the 0.3.0 version of the Lightning Arrow Deadeye in that instead of going for “Adds Cold Damage to Attacks,” you will get Breach Rings that have physical and lightning damage to attacks.

If you find yourself having trouble sustaining mana, the Breach Rings can roll “Gain Mana per Enemy Killed” as well. This modifier should help top-up your mana while mapping.

Don’t forget to spam Reaver Catalysts to improve the attack modifiers on the Breach Ring.

For bossing, you might want to invest in Thief’s Torment. This unique ring has that amazing mod that allows you to gain mana on hit. You cannot find it anywhere else in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict, making it an incredible ring to wear when going against tough pinnacle bosses like The Arbiter of Ash or T4 Xesht.

Do you want to get your hands on Thief’s Torment right away? You can buy Thief’s Torment in our PoE 2 Store now!

Belt

A standard rare Linen Belt with life, mana recovery rate, and some resistance mods are ideal. You can also have STR on this belt, so if you are using a lot of red support gems, you can get some strength on here too!

Ingenuity has been nerfed significantly in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. However, we’d argue that it is still relatively powerful if you are able to secure one that has near-perfect rolls.

The addition of two charm slots enables you to use the Stone Charm for stun immunity and Grounding Charm for Shock immunity, greatly improving your survivability. So while Ingenuity did lose a lot of power in Patch 0.3.0, it makes up for it in boosting your chances of survival.

Do you want to buy Ingenuity? Then head to our PoE 2 Store right away!

Flasks

If you don’t want to invest too much of your PoE 2 currency on flasks, the Ultimate Life Flask and Ultimate Mana Flask with “Increased Amount Recovered” and “Increased Charges” will suffice.

However, if you don’t mind spending, we suggest a couple of unique items. The first is Olroth’s Resolve—a unique flask that adds a defensive layer called “Guard” that absorbs damage based on how much excess life it recovers when using it.

For the Mana Flask, you can go for a well-rolled Ultimate Mana Flask instead of a Melting Maelstrom. However, the latter does have an edge in terms of damaging nearby enemies with chaos damage, so if you can afford one, then by all means.

Jewels

Rare Emerald Jewels have the mods that work great for the Lightning Arrow Deadeye. When purchasing an Emerald from the trade website, look for any of these modifiers (which are arranged in order of importance):

  • Increased Bonuses from Equipped Quiver
  • Increased Critical Damage Bonus for Attack Damage
  • Increased Attack Speed
  • Increased Attack Speed with Bows
  • Increased Damage with Bows
  • Increased Attack Damage
  • Increased Lightning Damage
  • Increased Projectile Damage
  • Increased Accuracy Rating with Bows
  • Damage Penetrates % Lightning Resistance
  • Chance to Blind Enemies with Attacks
  • 2% Increased Movement Speed

Take note that the “Increased Bonuses from Equipped Quiver” mod has been nerfed (now at 4-6% rather than 10-15%). If you don’t like investing in this modifier anymore, go for increased critical hit chance instead.

Once you have farmed enough PoE 2 Currency, we recommend that you start investing in some unique jewels. Against the Darkness is still a pretty good unique jewel for the Lightning Arrow Deadeye. However, the only bonus you really need to look at is the extra lightning damage. The other modifier could be anything, so long as the jewel itself fits within your budget.

Next, get a Megalomaniac with any two of these notable passive skills:

  • Insightfulness
  • Spaghettification
  • Wild Storm
  • Essence of the Storm
  • Polymathy
  • Mental Toughness

Passive Skill Tree

The bulk of your damage comes from critical hits, which is why it is best that you go directly to the crit nodes on the passive tree as quickly as you can. Prioritize the trifecta of Heartstopping, Stuck Through, and Heartbreaking to significantly improve your critical hit chance and critical damage bonus.

Next, head left and take Wrapped Quiver and Falcon Technique. You could also allocate the defensive nodes, Enhanced Reflexes and Beastial Skin, if you like. However, they are not mandatory at this stage of the game.

After that, go upward until you reach True Strike, For the Jugular, and Deadly Force. Once you have these allocated, get the other critical damage bonus nodes, such as Cooked and Throatseeker.

From that point onward, you can decide how you wish to proceed with the next levels. You can improve your attack speed by taking Falcon Dive and Acceleration at the bottom-right portion of the passive tree. You could also allocate Pocket Sand for a 50% increased effect of blind on enemies.

Tips and Strategies [Patch 0.3.0]

Before firing up Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict and playing the Lightning Arrow Deadeye, read these useful tips to make your journey with this Ranger Build quite enjoyable:

Sustaining Mana Easily

A lot of people struggle with keeping their mana at a healthy level when playing the Lightning Arrow Deadeye in PoE 2 Rise of the Abyssals League. If you don’t want to experience this, the first thing that you can do is to have the “Mana per Enemy Killed” modifier wherever possible. This modifier can roll on the weapon, quiver, and ring.

When you have the budget, we suggest that you get a couple of unique items. Thief’s Torment is a unique ring that allows you to recover mana by attacking enemies with Lightning Arrow and Lightning Rod. If you have this already, wear this ring when fighting bosses because this is typically the situation where you lose quite a bit of mana before the encounter ends. You can purchase the Thief’s Torment for roughly 50 PoE 2 Exalted Orbs at the time of writing.

If you can’t afford Thief’s Torment yet, you can add a couple of Sapphire Jewels that have “Recover 2% of Mana on Kill.” Take note that this mod is only helpful when mapping because bosses in the game rarely summon enough minions during the fight.

Always Ride Your Rhoa

Despite having the ability to sprint, the Rhoa Mount is still useful for the Lightning Arrow Deadeye in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict. Unlike the mounts that you find in other ARPGs, the Rhoa Mount doesn’t really increase your movement speed. What it does, however, is remove any movement speed penalty while strafing or using certain mechanics like the support gem “Deliberation.”

To ride the Rhoa Mount, you simply have to enable it (by activating the skill via right-clicking on the “Skills” menu) and then click on it whenever you see it on the battlefield.

To dismount from the Rhoa, simply press the spacebar or the button for Dodge Roll. Alternatively, you can re-insert the Rhoa Mount in the Skills page, though that is the more cumbersome way of dismounting.

Now, the Rhoa Mount does require 60 Spirit to use. If you do not know how to increase your Spirit, you can refer to our Complete Guide to Get More Spirit in Path of Exile 2 [0.3.0] for some useful tips!

Avoid Getting Stunned

While the Rhoa Mount is a very helpful companion for the PoE 2 Lightning Arrow Deadeye, it is imperative that you frequently look at your stun bar. Why? Getting stunned while riding the Rhoa Mount makes you more susceptible to dying because you cannot move for several seconds, which is pretty much a death sentence in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict.

Now, we are going to share a secret with you. You can actually reset your stun bar simply by dismounting from your Rhoa Mount. A simple dismount can be done by using the Spacebar or any custom hotkey that lets you perform a Dodge Roll.

Hyrri’s Ire or Rare Body Armor?

If you are wondering which body armor you should choose for this PoE 2 Lightning Arrow build, that really depends on what you want.

In most cases, we recommend Hyrri’s Ire to provide you with a considerable damage boost, as well as a pseudo-Acrobatics keystone passive. However, the benefit of wearing rare body armor is that you can have one that has additional Spirit. So, if you’d like to use Cast on Shock, for example, that is only possible with the appropriate rare body armor.

Bonuses on Equipped Quiver

GGG has significantly nerfed the amount of quiver bonuses you can get from the passive tree and rare jewels. While we do still recommend it if you are searching for jewels on the trade website, they are no longer as important as they were before.

Think of bonuses on equipped quiver as a “nice-to-have” rather than something that is mandatory for the build to function. If you feel that you are better off with jewels that improve your critical hit chance, then go for that instead.

POB

Lightning Arrow Deadeye

PoE 2 Lightning Arrow Deadeye in Patch 0.3.0: Final Thoughts

All Path of Exile 2 builds can map, though there are some that truly stand out above the rest. The Lightning Arrow Deadeye is an exceptional mapper capable of finishing maps in under five minutes.

In boss fights, this build is quite reliable as well. However, it is important to note that you have to fire at the lightning rods with Lightning Arrow to initiate their bursts of lightning in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict.

The new Rhoa Mount should help you enjoy the build more smoothly than ever, especially when utilizing your primary skills while moving. Don’t forget to insert the new Deliberation support gem either in your Lightning Arrow or Lightning Rod to boost their damage significantly.

With all things considered, you can play the Lightning Arrow Deadeye comfortably, whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned veteran. That is why, in most cases, the Lightning Arrow Deadeye is considered one of the Best Budget Builds in Path of Exile 2 (PoE 2 0.3.0).

Now that you know what makes the Lightning Arrow Deadeye work, will you play this particular build in Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments!
