Diablo 2: Resurrected , Game Guides , Gameplay Guides

If you are playing Diablo II: Resurrected, there is a new and terrifying foe that you must be aware of. I am talking about the new Heralds of Terror, of course, which are enemies that you will encounter in the Reign of the Warlock expansion. Do you want to know what they are and what they have to offer? If so, read further to learn more!
What Are Heralds of Terror in D2R: Reign of the Warlock?
The Heralds of Terror are new enemies that can easily eliminate any player who does not have the best D2R items equipped. As you can tell by their name, the Heralds of Terror can only spawn in Terror Zones (TZ). It does not matter if it’s a random TZ or one that is induced by the new Worldstone Shards. They will appear if certain conditions are met, such as:
- Killing Champion Packs
- Killing Elite Monsters
- Killing Super Uniques
- Killing Bosses
- Longer Sessions (playing without logging out)
- Fighting in Terror Zones in a full party of eight
Before you face the Heralds of Terror, you must accrue their “Ire” first. According to the vast majority of D2R players, ire can be earned by killing champions and elites inside Terror Zones (at roughly 2% progress with each kill). You should know that if you have accumulated enough ire, you will see a message pop up in the chatbox.

Once you have gained enough ire, another message will pop up. This time, it will say that a Herald of Terror is hunting you, along with the name of the location you are currently in.

At that point, a Herald of Terror should be close by. Get ready to engage with these powerful monsters using your most destructive attacks or spells!

Each Herald of Terror always comes with several random modifiers. Additionally, they are immune to a certain damage type, so having sunder charms is indeed the preferred strategy going in. Needless to say, you have to come prepared, or you’ll be easily dealt with!
D2R Herald of Terror Tiers Explained
Now, the Heralds of Terror in Diablo II: Resurrected have five different tiers. You will know which tier of herald you are fighting simply by looking at their name. Here are the different names you have to be aware of:
- Tier 1: Herald of Fright
- Tier 2: Herald of Dread
- Tier 3: Herald of Fear
- Tier 4: Herald of Horror
- Tier 5: Herald of Terror

The higher the tier of the Herald you are fighting, the better your chances of receiving valuable items. Furthermore, once you have successfully defeated a Tier 5 Herald of Terror, all subsequent Heralds are going to be Tier 5 as well. This is the reason why you should never log out of the game, because all the progress you have made will be reset! When this happens, you have to accumulate ire again!
Here is a quick table that shows you the level of difficulty, as well as the recommended level you should be at before fighting each Herald tier:
| Tier | Difficulty | Reward (Quality) | Recommended Player Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (Herald of Fright) | Easy | Basic Drops | 78+ |
| 2 (Herald of Dread) | Normal | Improved | 82+ |
| 3 (Herald of Fear) | Hard | Good | 87+ |
| 4 (Herald of Horror) | Very Hard | Pretty Good | 90+ |
| 5 (Herald of Terror) | Ultra Hard | Best | 95+ |
Why Fight the Heralds of Terror in Diablo II: Resurrected?
If the Heralds of Terror are more challenging than your average monster in Hell Difficulty, why would you even want to fight them in D2R? Well, the main reason for killing them is that you’ll have a chance to get the Latent Sunder Charm. That’s right! If you want to get your hands on the Sunder Charm, you must now target farm them in order to get one.
It is also important to note that the Latent Sunder Charms can only be reliably farmed when fighting the Herald of Horror (Tier 4) or the Herald of Terror (Tier 5). Although some people claim to have obtained a sunder charm after defeating a Herald of Dread (Tier 2), those people may have been extremely lucky and are outliers rather than the norm.

In D2R: Reign of the Warlock, Latent Sunder Charms can be upgraded to Renewed Sunder Charms via Horadric Cube Recipes. For example, if you want to get your hands on the Renewed Flame Rift, you’d have to get your hands on the Latent Flame Rift, and then add the following items:
- Io Rune
- Perfect Ruby
- Deep Worldstone Shard

Unlike Latent Sunder Charms, which are very basic in what they can do, the Renewed Sunder Charms provide more bonuses, including +% to skill damage, + to life/mana, and damage/magic damage reduction, among many others.
Best Terror Zones for Herald Farming
If you recall, the new Heralds of Terror can only be fought inside Terror Zones, and you have to satisfy certain conditions in order for that to happen. Hence, you want to farm them in Terror Zones that are known to have good map layouts and a relatively high monster density.
Here is a list of the Terror Zones that I recommend for efficient Herald of Terror farming:
- Tal Rasha’s Tomb
- Worldstone Keep Level 1-3
- Throne of Destruction
- Chaos Sanctuary
- Catacombs Level 1-3
- Rocky Waste
- Stony Tome Level 1-2
- Sewers Level 1-2
- Dry Hills
- Pit Level 1-2
- Halls of the Dead Level 1-3
- Cathedral
- Flayer Dungeon Level 1-3
- Crystalline Passage
- Cave Level 1-2
- Nihlathak’s Temple
- Halls of Pain
- Halls of Anguish
- Halls of Vaught
- Ruined Temple
- Lost City
- Tower Cellar Level 1-5
- River of Flame
- Black Marsh
- City of the Damned
- Frozen River
- Valley of Snakes
- Claw Viper Temple Level 1-2
D2R Worldstone Shards Explained
Worldstone Shards are a new type of currency in Diablo II: Resurrected that allows you to terrorize a particular Act in the game at will. For example, using a Western Worldstone Shard will “terrorize” Act 1, so places like the Stony Field, Black Marsh, and Tristram are now considered Terror Zones until you log out of the game.

Here are some quick facts about Worldstone Shards that you have to keep in mind:
- If you terrorize an Act with a Worldstone Shard, that particular Act remains terrorized until all players (assuming you’re in a party) have left the game.
- Worldstone Shards drop from high-level monsters in Hell Difficulty. You don’t necessarily have to be inside Terror Zones for them to drop.
- The drop rate of Worldstone Shards is not affected by magic find, so investing in MF gear solely for the purpose of getting these shards is not required.
In addition, there are five different Worldstone Shards that affect certain Acts in Diablo II: Resurrected. These are:
- Western Worldstone Shard (Act 1)
- Eastern Worldstone Shard (Act 2)
- Southern Worldstone Shard (Act 3)
- Deep Worldstone Shard (Act 4)
- Northern Worldstone Shard (Act 5)
D2R Heralds of Terror Tips
- Stay in longer sessions. Do not log out and create a new session because this has been known to “reset” the tier of the Heralds.
- Tier 5 Heralds of Terror are no slouch. They hit hard and can easily destroy anyone who is not well prepared for the fight.
- Do randomized Terror Zones in the beginning just to get some Ire. You’ll be notified if you have gained the ire of the Heralds.
- Invest in Worldstone Shards. These will greatly help you accumulate Ire to fight the Heralds of Terror.
- When using a Worldstone Shard, make sure to take your D2R build into account. For instance, if you are playing the Fire Warlock build, using the Deep Worldstone Shard does not make sense because Act 4 is filled with monsters that are immune to fire damage. This advice only changes when you have a sunder charm for your particular build’s main damage type.
- Each zone will have its sub-zones affected by the ire of the Heralds as well. Hence, when you are in multi-level Terror Zones (like the Tower Cellar), make sure to enter every level of the dungeon.
- Always play with eight players whenever possible. The more players there are in your group, the higher the chance for Latent Sunder Charms to drop (from defeating the Heralds of Terror).
FAQ
What Are Heralds of Terror in D2R?
The Heralds of Terror are a new class of enemies that you will encounter inside Terror Zones. You have to accumulate “ire” by doing certain things, such as killing Champion Packs and elite monsters.
Is Killing the Heralds of Terror Worth It?
Absolutely! Defeating the Herald of Terror is the only way to get your hands on the Latent Sunder Charm, which can later be upgraded into a “Renewed” sunder charm with better stats and bonuses.
How Do Worldstone Shards Work?
Worldstone Shards enable you to terrorize an entire Act of the game. All areas in Acts 1 to 5 will become Terror Zones if you use a specific Worldstone Shard.
Using the Deep Worldstone Shard, for example, will cause the City of the Damned, Plains of Despair, River of Flame, and Chaos Sanctuary to become Terror Zones.
Take note that the effect of the Worldstone Shards wears off when you log out of the game. This is also true if you get disconnected somehow, either by having lost your internet connection or via server maintenance.
Are Heralds of Terror Available Offline?
Yes. The same conditions as online play do apply.
Are Tier 5 Heralds of Terror Required for the Best Charms?
Ideally, yes. The higher the tier of Herald you defeat, the better the items that you will get.
Can You Trade Worldstone Shards?
Yes. You will need valuable runes like Ist, Ohm, or Mal if you want to buy these shards from other players.
