Are you planning on getting on the hype train and creating an entirely new character in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred—Season of Reckoning? If so, this article will help you decide on which build you should use.
With the overhaul of the skill trees, the addition of a bunch of new D4 items, and the introduction of the War Plans, things just got so much more fun in the game! Come and join me as I unravel the best leveling builds for D4 Season 13!
How Leveling Works in Diablo 4: Season of Reckoning
For those who have been living under a rock and have not caught on with the latest changes in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred, leveling is now a bit different in Season 13. For one, the max level cap has been increased to level 70, which means that you have more leveling up to do after completing the campaign.
On top of that, the skill trees have been overhauled for each class in the game. You have about 83 skill points to work with, though the full set of points will be given to you after completing your seasonal objectives.
Having said that, the builds that I am going to talk about today all work really well with minimal gear. It is also important to note that, even though they might not be the most ideal endgame builds, they should get you over the hump until you get the best uniques, talismans, and equipment.
Best Leveling Builds in Diablo 4: Season of Reckoning
In this section, I will cover what I believe are the best leveling builds for D4 Season 13 for each class. It is up to you whether you want to continue on with the build or switch to a different one later down the line. All I can say is that these builds should help you achieve a level 70 character in no time while also being good enough to farm some starter gear.
So, without further ado, here are the best leveling builds in Diablo 4 Season 13:
Rushing Claw Spiritborn
The Rushing Claw Spiritborn is befitting its name because you can literally use it to rush to endgame content without problems! The build utilizes two primary abilities, namely the Rock Splitter and Rushing Claw.
At level 15, you will choose the Eagle Spirit Hall for an easy "Vulnerable" application. It also gives you the ability to unleash some Storm Feathers every time you evade, which is not mandatory but still nice to have.
At level 30, you switch to the Jaguar Spirit Hall to initiate an additional strike every 15 hits. Combined with the "Charge Refund Rushing Claw" upgrade, you'll be able to obliterate enemies with Rushing Claw, dealing maximum damage every time!
Everything becomes a lot smoother when you're able to maintain your Ferocity stacks (from level 50 onwards). This is because of the "Evolving Claws" upgrade, which makes Rushing Claw not only strike an additional time, but it is also a guaranteed critical hit at maximum Ferocity stacks.
Although this D4 build doesn't require specific unique items and whatnot, it does benefit from a complete Kwatli's Grace set. Its 5-piece bonus grants a huge 50% increase in movement speed, which goes in line with what the Rushing Claw Spiritborn is trying to achieve—maximum MAYHEM!
Dance of Knives Rogue
That's right, the Dance of Knives Rogue has risen to prominence in Season of Reckoning, thanks in large part to the skill tree changes in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. The "Star Shards" upgrade for Dance of Knives, in particular, not only turns the said ability into a Marksman Skill, but it also makes the knives shatter, dealing considerably more damage as a result. Combined with the "Pierce and Size" upgrade, Dance of Knives becomes a lethal skill that can do screen-wide explosions every time it's used!
Once you have access to Poison Imbuement, things will start to go berserk. Due to the massive AoE provided by the aforementioned upgrades, you are not going to have any issues dealing with enemies during the campaign. This is even true if you decide to skip the campaign altogether and go directly to the War Plans.
In terms of defense, which is often the typical weak point of a Rogue, you have Dark Shroud to improve your resistances, and Shadow Clone for increased damage reduction via Resolve stacks.
Overall, the Dance of Knives Rogue is truly an amazing leveling build in Diablo 4: Season of Reckoning, for sure!
Storm Shred Druid
This build's name is taken from the "Storm Shred" upgrade, which effectively turns Shred into a Storm Skill, thus allowing it to benefit from damage boosts from the "Thunderstruck" paragon node, as well as the "Earth and Sky" glyph.
Your goal with this build is to stay in Dire Werebear form (via Grizzly Rage) for as long as possible. To do that, you have to take the "Hero of the Storm" upgrade for Lightning Storm to reset Grizzly Rage's cooldown often. This will enable you to passively create a thunderstorm while you focus on shredding enemies to pieces.
Because of what you're trying to achieve here, the Gift of the Stag spirit boon is necessary for sustaining your Spirit. Furthermore, the "Overload" snake spirit boon lets you gain stacks of Ferocity for more attack speed.
As soon as you're able, equip the Rush of the Red Wolf Moon Set to start petrifying enemies that are hit by the thunderstorm. Additionally, this particular set charm grants a 30% damage reduction for 15 seconds as its 3-piece bonus, so it's definitely worthwhile—whether you're leveling in the campaign or fighting in the endgame.
Dread Claws Warlock
The Warlock is the newest class introduced in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. This demon-binding class lets you control demonic forces to kill enemies in Season of Reckoning.
That said, the Dread Claws Warlock is arguably the best leveling build for this particular class, mainly because it excels at finishing the campaign with just self-found gear. The secret to this build is the Dread Claws skill, which has a relatively good AoE and burst damage potential with the right upgrades.
Speaking of which, you can either take the "Encircling Terror" upgrade or the "Cascading Dread" upgrade, depending on which you prefer. The former changes the way Dread Claws perform at a fundamental level, forcing it to create vicious claws around you in an area. The latter, on the other hand, makes the skill create and send forth several additional claws, with each one dealing more damage than the last. Personally, I would go for the Encircling Terror early on and then transition to Cascading Dread once I get better gear.
The Dread Claws Warlock also has other incredible complementary skills, such as Rampage (for consistent damage and Hex application), Nether Step (for mobility), and Metamorphosis (for turning you into a shadowy demon that allows you to cast Dread Claws even in Shadowform).
Although the damage of the build is not ideal against bosses in Torment Difficulties until you get the best gear, the Dread Claws Warlock should help you get to Torment in the first place without much effort!
Minion Necromancer
If there is one class that has truly benefited from the skill tree changes in the Lord of Hatred expansion, it is the Necromancer. The upgrades available in the skill tree make the Necromancer a true minion commander, especially if the right unique items are equipped.
Once you unlock the Book of the Dead at level 15, there are a few things you need to allocate, such as:
- Skeletal Warriors: Defenders
- Skeletal Mages: Cold [Mages]
- Golems: Blood [Golem]
Taking "Defenders" will prompt your Skeletal Warriors to taunt enemies you've commanded them to attack. Cold Mages not only deal damage to enemies, but also inflict Chill and Vulnerable, thus unlocking damage boosts later on. The Blood Golem upgrade is there to grant consistent Fortify uptime for better survivability.
When you have the Army of the Dead ultimate skill, use it every time you come across a tough opponent. Army of the Dead not only summons additional skeletons that explode near enemies, but also reduces the damage your minions take by a whopping 90%.
If you really want to live the fantasy of becoming a true minion commander, equip The Undercrown. This unique helmet forces Skeletal Mages to hit the same targets that you've commanded your Skeletal Warriors to attack.
Blizzard Sorcerer
With the overhauled skill tree in D4 Season 13, you can effectively change the element of a particular skill when you choose the right upgrade. This next build puts that into action.
Blizzard is already a powerful ultimate skill by itself. However, when you take the "Static Field" upgrade, it turns from a Frost Skill into a Shock Skill. This makes Blizzard deal sparking damage to enemies within its AoE, and periodically stuns enemies from time to time as well.
Don't worry about the build's single-target damage because it also has access to Hydra. And no, you don't use the typical Hydra with its fiery breath. Instead, you go for the Frigid Hydra, which deals cold damage that chills and freezes enemies that are hit.
The Blizzard Sorcerer is a fun and enjoyable leveling build in Season of Reckoning. If you love this spellcasting class, be sure to give the Blizzard Sorcerer build a whirl.
Hammerdin
If you have played Diablo 4 prior to Season 13, you've probably had the chance to try the Paladin out. The Hammerdin was a good leveling build back then, and I am happy to report that the same is still true today.
The secret to this build's success lies in the Disciple Oath, which puts you in Arbiter Form when you use Disciple Skills with a cooldown. In this case, those skills are Falling Star and Condemn. Arbiter Form also allows you to hit enemies with Wing Strikes, though they only deal supplementary damage (and not your main source).
For the Blessed Hammer itself, you should take the "Disciple's Halo" upgrade to force the hammers you create to follow you around. This skill upgrade also makes the Blessed Hammers move slightly faster, which is key to fast leveling gameplay.
Whirlwind Barbarian
After several seasons, the Whirlwind Barbarian is back at the top in Diablo 4: Season of Reckoning. Part of the reason why it's awesome is that the skill itself got a few incredible upgrades.
The "Cost Damage Bonus" and "Channel Damage Bonus" provide insane damage boosts that only require two skill points. The star of the show, however, is the "Tornado" upgrade. When taken, this makes Whirlwind create a couple of Dust Devils that each deal considerable amounts of damage. This insane damage output is quite evident later on, so you can definitely transition to its endgame variant with the right gear.
Having said that, you must use Ground Stomp to generate Fury, as this build can be resource-intensive. If you need more firepower, you have War Cry specifically for that purpose. If the going gets tough, there's Challenging Shout to provide some damage reduction.
I don't use "spin to win" freely unless I truly believe in a build that can do that with flying colors. Fortunately, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Whirlwind Barbarian in D4 Season 13, mainly because it handles all content pretty well, and you're doing that while spinning!
