Dream is primarily used for its Holy Shock Aura. Holy Shock adds a large amount of lightning damage to attacks and very few monsters are immune to both Physical and Lightning elements. The AOE aura damage can also be useful to farm low level zones efficiently.

Normally, characters use both a Dream Helm and Shield simultaneously. Auras from Dreams stack in the following manner:

Single Dream Helm or Shield

Level 15 Holy Shock Aura

1-648 Lightning Damage Added to Attack

1-108 Aura Tick Damage

Dual Dream (Helm and Shield)

2x Level 30 Holy Shock Aura

1-1668 Lightning Damage Added to Attack

2-556 Aura Tick Damage

When two Dreams are equipped, the level of the active aura is summed (15+15 = 30) and there are two auras active at the same time – hence double the usual tick damage. However, the character only gets one instance of lightning damage added to their attacks.

Paladins are able to take advantage of Dreams because Holy Shock synergies work with Item Auras. Putting 20 Hard points into Resist Lightning and Salvation will increase Holy Shock damage by 320%, resulting in:

1-7005 Lightning Damage Added to Attack

2-2334 Aura Tick Damage

This is most commonly used in a Zeal setup where the Paladin gets Holy Shock from 2x Dream, Conviction from his mercenary’s Infinity and uses Fanaticism as his main aura.

Sorceresses are also able to take advantage of Dreams using their Lightning Mastery mechanic. +X% Lightning Damage is applied normally to Holy Shock Aura tick damage, but applied twice to melee attacks (this is also true for Paladins when they use items such as Lightning Facets but to a much lesser extent). A Dream Sorceress with a level 41 Lightning Mastery has +530% Lightning Damage. With two dreams equipped:

(1-1668) x 6.3 x 6.3 (Lightning Mastery applied twice)

39-66202 Lightning Damage Added to Attack

12-3502 Aura Tick Damage

Additional +% Lightning Damage increases the total damage output exponentially. This huge amount of lightning damage added to each attack is combined with a very fast attack animation to create a unique and moderately effective PvM build. In order to attack quickly, Sorceresses can use Zeal granted by a Passion Phase Blade. Alternatively, they can shapeshift into Werebear form using Beast and then autoattack with a fast weapon. Dream Sorceresses usually max out Enchant to provide attack rating and a second type of elemental damage.

Dream is occasionally used as a mercenary helm. It has reasonably strong defensive stats and can be used for the purpose of bugging Baal waves. Ordinarily, each minion wave must be killed or lured out of the Throne Room before Baal spawns the next wave. However, if the monsters are confused, Baal does not register them anymore and will immediately proceed to spawn the next wave.
