Exile is primarily used by PvP smiters in melee matchups. Although it is undeniably powerful, the use of Life Tap is considered “bad-mannered” in most duels.
Exile is normally made in a Sacred Targe base which has the highest base chance to block. The base should be Ethereal since Exile comes with a self-repair modifier.
Normal Shield + Tal + Amn + Perfect Ruby = Socketed Shield
Occasionally, a player may opt to stack defense and go for an Exile Vortex Shield which can have up to 1818 defense. These shield bases can also come with an automod of up to +65% Enhanced Damage and 121 Attack Rating.
Many guides recommend Exile for Uber Smiters but in practice, it is significantly weaker than Herald of Zakarum. While Life Tap is an excellent way to sustain life during the Ubers encounter, Dracul’s Grasp is a much better option since the glove slot is much less valuable and it also comes with Open Wounds. The high defense of Exile does not serve much purpose against the Ubers since most of the damage taken is elemental.
In comparison, Herald of Zakarum has +50 All Resistances and can be socketed with an Um Rune for another +22. But more importantly, the +2 All Skills and +2 Combat Skills on the shield represent the largest possible increase in damage for a Smiter. +Skills serve triple duties by increasing the +% damage of your Smite skill, the damage bonus of Fanaticism Aura and also the damage bonus to shields granted by Holy Shield.
