There are a few skill-related mini-games in OSRS and you should definitely try out each of them at least once. For Smithing, one of those mini-games is blast furnace. In this OSRS blast furnace guide, we'll show you everything you need to know for this fun activity.

What Is Blast Furnace?

The Blast Furnace is an exclusive members-only minigame located in Keldagrim, offering a unique approach to smelting bars in large quantities. Situated in the dwarven city of Keldagrim, this specialized furnace provides distinct advantages for players engaged in the production of various metal bars.

Features:

  1. Reduced Coal Consumption:

The Blast Furnace stands out by requiring only half as much coal compared to conventional furnaces. This feature proves particularly beneficial when smelting high-tier ores that traditionally demand a substantial amount of coal.

  1. Bulk Smelting:

Designed for efficiency, the Blast Furnace enables players to smelt bars in bulk quantities.

This feature is invaluable for those seeking to produce significant quantities of metal bars quickly.

  1. High-Tier Ore Smelting:

The reduced coal requirement makes the Blast Furnace ideal for smelting high-tier ores, including those that typically demand more coal in standard furnaces.

Blast Furnace Requirements

If you're looking to access the Blast Furnace in Keldagrim, the first step is to kick off "The Giant Dwarf" quest, granting you entry to this industrious city. Once there, you'll find that using the Blast Furnace is quite accessible, either by maintaining a solid Smithing level of 60 (without the option for boosting) or by opting to pay a fee of 2,500 coins every 10 minutes. However, donning the ring of charos (a) offers a cost-saving perk, reducing the entrance fee to a mere 1,250 coins. Make sure to engage in a specific dialogue with the Blast Furnace Foreman to activate this benefit (Chat 1•3•2•3).

On worlds specifically themed around the Blast Furnace, an additional fee of 72,000 coins is required for an hour of usage, deposited conveniently in the coffer next to the bank chest. If you're operating on non-themed worlds, there's no extra fee, but you'll need to collaborate with fellow players to ensure smooth operation.

For effective metal smelting, bars naturally cool over time, but you can speed up the process by using a bucket of water at the bar dispenser. Handy enough, you'll find an empty bucket spawn and water source nearby. To streamline your operations, consider wearing ice gloves, as they allow you to retrieve bars directly and immediately. This not only saves an inventory space but also minimizes the number of interactions needed.

How To Get To Blast Furnace

osrs_blast_furnace_guide_3

To access the Blast Furnace in Keldagrim, you need to have initiated The Giant Dwarf quest by conversing with the Dwarven Boatman within the mines east of Rellekka. Follow the path indicated on the map to walk from Seers' Village/Camelot to the mines east of Rellekka. After your initial visit to Keldagrim, you can return either through the mine cart from the Dwarven Mines under Ice Mountain or the Grand Exchange, or use the Grouping teleport to arrive just outside the Blast Furnace building.

Utilize the Fairy ring system in two ways: teleport to ring DKR for immediate access west of the Grand Exchange, using the underwall tunnel north of the ring (21 Agility required) and then the mine cart. Alternatively, teleport to ring DKS to arrive a short walk southwest of the Keldagrim entrance.

There is a bank chest near the water pump and the coffer, enabling players to efficiently utilize the furnace. Be mindful that keeping the bank chest interface open will deplete the coins in the coffer over time.

Operating The Blast Furnace

For efficient use of the Blast Furnace, consider utilizing the official Blast Furnace worlds, which offer significant convenience and are widely regarded as the preferred method. It's uncommon to encounter player-run furnaces, with most stations being primarily used for skill training. The operational process on official worlds involves:

  1. Place coal and/or ore on the conveyor belt.
  2. Cool down smelted bars with a bucket of water, unless equipped with ice gloves.
  3. Collect bars from the bar dispenser.
  4. Bank.
  5. Repeat.

If you choose to operate the Blast Furnace manually, follow these steps:

  1. Place coal and/or ore on the conveyor belt.
  2. Turn the conveyor belt by operating the pedals.
  3. Repair broken cogs, pipes, or drive belt using a hammer.
  4. Collect coke from storage with a spade.
  5. Refuel the adjacent stove with the scooped-up coke.
  6. Operate the pump, while keeping pipes repaired.
  7. Monitor the temperature gauge to prevent overheating.
  8. Cool down smelted bars with a bucket of water from the sink, unless equipped with ice gloves.
  9. Collect bars from the bar dispenser.
  10. Bank.
  11. Repeat.

Additional notes to consider:

  • When smelting steel bars, ensure coal is loaded before or deposited alongside iron ore to avoid yielding iron instead of steel.
  • The coal bag can be filled directly from the bank using the Fill option (accessible with a shift-click).
  • The maximum coal capacity in the Blast Furnace is 254 ores or a little over 9 inventories.
  • The maximum amount of primary ores that can be placed is 28, with an additional 28 bars storable. An error occurs if attempting to exceed this without collecting the bars.
  • Logging out with only coal on the conveyor belt results in permanent loss, unless paired with another ore.
  • When using ice gloves and goldsmith gauntlets, equip ice gloves only after the smelting process is complete to retain the gauntlets' bonus.
  • On Blast Furnace activity worlds, deposit 109 coins if running and 217 coins if walking for a single run, standing north of the coffers and moving towards the conveyor belt simultaneously.
  • Participants receive a token contribution experience when bars are dispensed during manual operation of the Blast Furnace.

Smithing Training With Blast Furnace

In smelting bars at the Blast Furnace, you gain the full experience associated with Smithing. Adjacent to the furnace is an anvil available for smithing purposes, but accessing it requires a Smithing level of 60. The Blast Furnace offers specific Smithing experience rates when producing bars, with calculations based on the assumption that you are wearing ice gloves. Additionally, if applicable, the tables consider the presence of a coal bag or goldsmith gauntlets in your inventory, with 27 slots occupied by ore. In cases where hybrid bar patterns are utilized, requiring both the coal bag and goldsmith gauntlets, only 26 inventory slots are occupied by ore.

For enhanced rates, it is advisable to leverage the Barbarian vial smash perk, which can be unlocked through Alfred Grimhand's Barcrawl. This optimization is particularly effective when sipping energy restores and stamina potions during your activities at the Blast Furnace.

Here's a look at the XP rates:

Weight Reduction and Efficiency:

  • Wear weight-reducing clothing for energy conservation when handling heavy ore and smelted bars.
  • Prioritize weight reduction over run energy restoration rates for continuous running.
  • Some weight-reducing clothing pieces are preferred over corresponding graceful pieces.
  • A ring of endurance provides marginal assistance.

Smelting Process:

  • Use ice gloves for convenient handling of smelted ore, as they automatically cool bars.
  • If not using gloves, carry a bucket of water in the inventory.

Recommended Items:

  • Utilize a coal bag when working with ores requiring coal to significantly reduce required trips.
  • Equip goldsmith gauntlets when smelting gold and switch just before gaining experience.

Inventory Management:

  • Allocate remaining inventory space for ore.
  • Withdraw and use stamina potions and gold as needed for energy restoration and fee payments.

Smithing Catalyst:

osrs_blast_furnace_guide_7
  • Consider using a Smithing catalyst to double experience for smelting coal-required ores.
  • Note that it does not reduce the amount of coal needed in the Blast Furnace.
  • Exercise caution due to the effort required to obtain the catalyst in the Giants' Foundry.
  • The catalyst cannot be purchased with gold, is ineffective on gold ore, and occupies an extra inventory slot.
