Game Guides , Path of Exile 2

A new league launch is always a fun yet stressful time in Path of Exile 2. According to GGG, the game will have a new league every four months or so (barring constraints or any setbacks due to the new content).
For those who are new to the game, a new league means a fresh economy. Every player who has played previously is going to start over again. This means that PoE 2 items that they may have will be moved to the “Standard” server if they are planning to create a character in the new league.
Having said that, the first few days of a new league are always the most competitive because anyone who is ahead of the game will reap the benefits of acquiring tons of PoE 2 currency over the other players.
If you want to be a part of that elite group, then you need to be armed with the right knowledge. In this article, I will go over the things that you should keep in mind during every league start. This is our Path of Exile 2 new league launch guide!
What’s New This Season in PoE 2?
Why is there a need for a new league, you ask? Well, in every league start, GGG takes the opportunity to introduce entirely new mechanics, most of which have not been seen before in the franchise.
For example, in PoE 2: Dawn of the Hunt, the company introduced a new feature where Azmerian Wisps can possess rare monsters in the map, making them more challenging to eliminate. However, when you are successful in defeating them, you get far better rewards as a result.
A new league can also mean the addition of a much-improved feature that was present in the original game. In the current Fate of the Vaal League, for example, you can visit the Vaal Ruins, which is essentially the Temple of Atzoatl in PoE, but with plenty of new mechanics to mess around with. You can read our PoE 2 Vaal Ruins guide for more information about this.
New League Mechanics Explained
Right now, the Fate of the Vaal League is in full swing, so I will explain the various mechanics that you can interact with if you decide to play the game soon.
Basically, there are Ancient Beacons scattered throughout Wraeclast. You cannot miss them because they are shown as huge circles on the ground. Whenever you defeat the monsters within their vicinity, you “power” them up, giving you energized crystals every time. Once you have six energized crystals, a portal will open, which leads to the entrance of the Vaal Ruins.

Upon your arrival, you will see a Temple Console. Interacting with it will reveal the layout of the temple. The gist of the Vaal Ruins is that you carefully place various rooms that are connected with paths in between.
Each room not only holds something unique, but also provides bonuses that can be enjoyed while you are inside the temple. For example, the Garrison increases the number of monster packs that you’ll encounter in the Vaal Ruins by 10% at Tier 1, all the way to 20% at Tier 3.

Ultimately, you want to achieve a temple that is similar to the one pictured above. Although RNG is still involved here when it comes to what actual rooms you can place each time you visit the temple, knowing the best rooms to put in is key to the success of your layout.
I am going to let you in on a little secret: If you have plenty of Garrisons, Spymaster’s Study, and Armories in your temple layout, you will print a ton of Divine Orbs in the process!
Now, if you do not want to farm PoE 2 Currency in the Vaal Ruins, you can simply make a beeline towards the Architect, Xipocado, so that you can gain access to his special console. You need to interact with Xipocado’s Console so that you can use the Royal Access Chamber to have a one-on-one fight against Atziri, the Red Queen.

Atziri is the pinnacle boss in the Fate of the Vaal League. Defeating her gives you a chance to acquire some nifty stuff, including the Flesh Crucible, Atziri’s Step, and Atziri’s Splendour, among others.
Who knows what other new mechanics you can expect in the league after this one? However, you can bet that it’s going to be something that is worth creating a fresh character for!
League Mechanic Difficulty Scaling
In some PoE 2 leagues, there is a way to scale the difficulty of the league mechanic. Let’s take the Vaal Ruins as an example since it is the current one. You can make the temple harder by adding the Garrison, Corruption Chamber, and Flesh Surgeon. If you are in the “past” version of the temple, you can even include a few Spymaster’s Study to further improve the effect of Garrisons by up to 30%.
For others, there is no direct way to influence the difficulty of the league mechanic in PoE 2. If you did not have a chance to play the Rise of the Abyssal League, the main league mechanic during that time was the Abyss.
Every time the Abyssal Fissures popped up in maps, the monsters that you encountered had relatively the same amount of health and damage as the other enemies in the area. The only way to change that was through the modifiers that were present on the waystone and Precursor Tablets used prior to running the map.
Risk vs. Reward
The profitability of the league mechanic largely depends on what you can get out of it. The Vaal Ruins are quite complicated, especially for beginners in Path of Exile 2. However, once you have completed the temple layout, making sure that you populated the area with the right rooms, then getting Divine Orbs will not be a problem at all!
When it comes to the topic of risk and reward, all you have to remember is this: The more difficult the content is (through modifiers and such), the higher your chances of acquiring better and more valuable loot.
How the Mechanics Fit Into Mapping
Since the launch of Path of Exile 2 Early Access, league mechanics have always been introduced in the campaign and later improved in the endgame through maps.
For instance, you can find the Ancient Beacons scattered throughout various parts of the map you are in. All you have to do is wear “Light Radius” gear if your mission is solely to seek out these beacons in the quickest way possible.
Best Starter Build Principles for PoE 2
A “league starter” refers to a build in Path of Exile 2 that has no problems breezing through the campaign. It works just by having mostly rare items with the right mods, though some do require certain PoE 2 unique items to pull off.
The Lightning Arrow Deadeye is a good example of this. In case you don’t know, this build functions well just by having a good bow with high-tier attack speed, physical damage, and critical strike chance mods.
Once you have enough currency, you can start investing in better armor. If you enjoy the build, you can buy a mirror-tier bow so that you will have no problems defeating even the pinnacle bosses in Path of Exile 2!
Damage Scaling and Survivability
So, how do you effectively scale the damage of a PoE 2 league starter? Well, you begin by searching for a weapon that increases the damage type of your chosen skill.
If you are playing the Spark CoC Blood Mage build, for example, you obviously want a wand that has increased lightning damage and “+ to Level of All Lightning Spell Skills” since Spark is a lightning-based spell.
Other modifiers that can improve the damage output of a league starter include:
- Increased attack speed (for attack-based skills like Lightning Arrow and Pounce)
- Increased cast speed (for spells like Spark or those that you cast yourself)
- Increased spell damage
- Increased elemental damage (fire/lightning/cold)
- Critical Hit Chance
- Critical Damage Bonus
In terms of survivability, most people go for energy shield over evasion and armor. The reason why energy shield is supreme for defense is that it can be scaled easily through gear and your choice of jewels.
Furthermore, you have the option of allocating Chaos Inoculation, which is a keystone that makes you completely immune to chaos damage. You can read more about it in our PoE 2 keystone passives guide.
Evasion comes as a close second to energy shield for improving survivability, especially when you incorporate deflection rating as well. When you deflect attacks in PoE 2, you effectively cut 40% of the total damage of the deflected hit. So, if an enemy were to hit you with an attack that deals 1,000 damage, deflecting that would mean that you only receive 600 damage.
Armor as a defensive stat is still mediocre compared to the previous two. The only thing going for armor in Path of Exile 2 is that you can make it mitigate elemental damage through various nodes on the passive tree, such as Prism Guard and Tempered Defences. Other than that, only go for energy shield and evasion for improving survivability in PoE 2.
Low Gear Dependency and Smooth Progression
One of the hallmarks of a league starter in Path of Exile 2 is that it does not rely on expensive items to function really well. Start with whatever weapon is required for you to use your favorite skill, and then upgrade your weapons as soon as you’re able to. Refer to the “damage scaling and survivability” section for the modifiers to look for.
Campaign to Endgame Transition
The only time when you need to be serious about gearing is when you have reached the endgame; more specifically, when you are about to go mapping.
At this point, you should start investing in a good weapon that has at least four different modifiers that your build needs.
Modifiers to Look For in Gear
Here is a general idea of what you should aim for depending on your build’s archetype:

Day 1-3 League Start Strategy
The first few days of a new league are a crucial time because those who are ahead of the pack will always have the upper hand in terms of obtaining currency and gear. You will find some tips to help you in the following sections:
Campaign Speed and Checkpoints
During the campaign, rush towards the objective in every area you are in. For example, in the Cemetery of the Eternals in Act 1, immediately search for either the Tomb of the Consort and the Mausoleum of the Praetor, since these are the places that have mini-bosses you have to defeat in order to fight the main villain, Lachlan of Endless Lament.
If you had to kill monsters to gain enough EXP, only eliminate monster packs. Otherwise, leave every other enemy you come across since they don’t provide that much EXP.
Early Mapping Priorities
Once you are finished with the campaign, here are the things that you should do:
- Search for the Nexus of Corruption: When you are in the main Atlas UI, search for areas that look icky and have tendrils moving about. Plot a course towards this by completing the nodes that lead to them. Here, you will find the Nexus of Corruption, which drops a Crystalline Core of Knowledge after defeating the boss inside.
- Allocate Waystone Drop Chance: the Crystalline Core of Knowledge grants some points that you can allocate on the Atlas Passive Tree. That said, allocate “Constant Crossroads” to increase the chance of waystones dropping while you are mapping. This helps with map sustain early on.
- Don’t Stress Yourself with League Mechanics: At least, not yet. If you have just finished the campaign, your main goal when mapping is to find gear and earn currency. Once you are geared enough, you can engage with the league mechanic at any time you desire.

Phase | Key Goals | Mistakes to Avoid |
Campaign | +Complete quest objectives ASAP +Only kill monster packs or rare monsters | +Don’t waste too much time killing all monsters in the area +Don’t forget to upgrade your gear whenever you can |
Early Mapping | +Don’t engage with league mechanics just yet (unless part of the map) +Farm as much currency as you can | +Never run maps without putting modifiers on your waystones first (Orb of Alchemy) +Aim to have at least 75% on all your resistances |
Endgame | +Kill pinnacle bosses +Maximize league mechanics | +Reach level 90 to gain enough skill points to make your build stronger +Unlock all of your free passive skill points if you haven’t already |
Early League Economy and Trading Tips
When you are able to reach maps before the vast majority of the population in PoE 2, you can farm items that you can sell for a huge profit. Here are some helpful tips about maximizing early league economy:
Currency Priorities at League Start
- Only buy gear that has the most profound impact on your build. For instance, your weapon greatly increases your damage, and body armor provides a huge chunk of defense relative to other gear.
- Prioritize getting at least 75% on all of your resistances. This includes fire, cold, lightning, and chaos resistance.
- Get some Orbs of Alchemy to ensure that your waystones have at least four modifiers. Remember, the tougher the content, the greater the rewards.
- Obtain gear in this order (from most important to least):
- Weapon and off-hand (if any)
- Body Armor
- Boots
- Gloves
- Helmet
- Amulet
- Rings
When to Sell vs. Hold Items
- Go to the trade website and plug in the modifiers of items you wish to sell.
- If they are relatively expensive (at least 20+ exalts in the first week), then you can start selling them.
- Items that are worth only a couple of Exalted Orbs should be converted or sold to the NPC.
- For valuable items, search for them on the trade website, and then compare the average price. If you want the item to sell faster, price it a bit lower than average. If you want maximum profit, slightly increase the price.
FAQ
What is the Best Way to Start a New PoE 2 Season?
- Always choose a good league starter
- Finish quest objectives as quickly as you can
- When you enter maps, search for a Corrupted Nexus to start getting Atlas Passive Skill Points
Are Starter Builds Mandatory at League Launch?
No. However, you can breeze through maps if you use a good league starter build.
How Important is the League Mechanic Early On?
That really depends on what the league mechanic actually is. If it can provide meaningful upgrades to your character, then the league mechanic is essential. Otherwise, skip it until the endgame.
When Should I Start Trading?
You should start trading as soon as possible if you have a good item to sell. It is highly recommended to get Merchant Stash Tabs so that you can put items up for sale. These items can be purchased by other players even if you are offline.
