What Are Exceptional Support Gems in PoE: Mirage?
Exceptional Support Gems are a class of support gems in Path of Exile: Mirage that were created to replace the now-defunct Awakened Supports. Although some of them are just carbon copies of their previous Awakened counterparts, most of the Exceptional Support Gems in Patch 3.28 provide entirely new effects.
For instance, Overloaded Intensity is a new Exceptional Support Gem that grants critical strike chance and a critical strike multiplier based on the number of intensity stacks you have.
Another noteworthy difference between the Exceptional Support Gems and Awakened Support Gems in PoE is that the former only has a max level of 3, while the latter should be leveled to 5. You can also achieve a level 4 Exceptional Support Gem if you are lucky with the Vaal Orb corruption.
Path of Exile: Mirage—How to Get Exceptional Support Gems
To even have the chance of obtaining the new Exceptional Support Gems in Path of Exile: Mirage, you must first defeat the Incantation of Dread at least once. This is because the said pinnacle boss drops the Originator Voidstone, which should unlock the ability for you to acquire these new supports.
Once you have inserted the Originator Voidstone onto the Atlas, you can now get the Exceptional Support Gems by defeating specific bosses in Path of Exile: Mirage. Don’t worry, I will tell you where the best Exceptional Support Gems drop so you can target-farm a specific gem that you need.
Best Exceptional Support Gems in Path of Exile: Mirage
Now that you know what they are, the list is composed of exceptional supports that are quite popular and are sold for plenty of PoE Divine Orbs on the trade market. So, without further ado, let’s get started!
Greater Fork Support
Drops from: General Marceus Lioneye (Legion Encounter)
Used by many Kinetic Blast Deadeye builds in PoE 3.28, the Greater Fork Support not only makes projectiles fork and hit more enemies, but it also provides up to a 50% chance for the forked projectiles to fork once more.
Aside from that, the Greater Fork Support does not have the “less damage” penalty from the regular Fork Support Gem, making it a good addition to projectile builds that want to become great at clearing maps.
That said, this Exceptional Support Gem only drops from General Marceus Lioneye (Eternal Army) from the Legion mechanic when the Originator Voidstone is inserted into the Atlas.
To increase the chance of the Eternal Army appearing when initiating a Legion Encounter, make sure that you allocate the “Legion General Chance” and “Eternal Legion Chance” nodes on the Atlas Passive Tree.
Cooldown Recovery Support
Drops from: The Elder
There are certain PoE builds that require heaps of cooldown recovery to make them function optimally. For instance, the Shock Nova of Procession Hierophant needs Arcane Cloak to be up quite often, so having more than enough cooldown recovery rate is needed to achieve that.
Thanks to the aptly named Cooldown Recovery Support introduced in Patch 3.28, skills like Arcane Cloak, Molten Shell, and other abilities with a long cooldown should be reusable again after only a short downtime.
That said, the Cooldown Recovery Support is a chore to get because not only does it have a very low drop chance (~2%), but it is only obtainable by eliminating The Elder.
You’d better create a competent bossing build because it will take a while for you to get one from the said boss fight.
Awakened Empower Support
Drops from: Uber Maven
Although it has the word “Awakened” in its name and has already existed in the game for some time now, the Awakened Empower Support is now an Exceptional Support Gem in Path of Exile: Mirage.
What it does is it raises the level of supported skill gems by three (at the max level), making them more potent as a result. This is best combined with spells, since these abilities scale their damage output at higher levels.
Interestingly, however, the Awakened Empower Support is being widely used by the Elemental Hit Slayers in PoE 3.28. I guess Elemental Hit does scale better past level 20, despite it being an “Attack” skill gem.
Greater Spell Echo Support
Drops from: Atziri, Queen of the Vaal
The Greater Spell Echo Support is also not new in the game, though just like the Awakened Empower Support above, this has now been classified as an Exceptional Support Gem in Patch 3.28.
Having said that, the Greater Spell Echo Support allows supported spells to repeat twice, with each repeat dealing more damage and having a bigger AoE. It is being widely used by the Shock Nova of Procession Hierophants, Spark of the Nova Inquisitors, and the Raise Spectre Necromancers.
Just like before, the Greater Spell Echo Support can only be obtained by defeating Atziri, Queen of the Vaal in The Alluring Abyss.
Invert the Rules Support
Drops from: The Maven
Invert the Rules Support does what it says on the tin. By that, I mean that each hit with the supported skill has a chance to treat the enemy monster’s elemental resistance values as inverted. So, if an enemy has 90 lightning resistance, for example, hitting it with Spark that has the Invert the Rules Support could change that to -90 lightning resistance instead.
Just about any build that uses skills that deal elemental damage can use this particular Exceptional Support Gem. You can even use it on the Kinetic Blast of Clustering Hierophant, provided that you equip him with the Grace of the Goddess as well.
Congregation Support
Drops from: Incarnation of Dread
What was once thought of as a mediocre support gem prior to the release of Path of Exile: Mirage has now shot straight up to the top of the charts! I am talking about the new Congregation Support, which is an Exceptional Support Gem that effectively increases the number of minions you can summon with the supported skill.
What’s interesting about this is that its bonus increase in minions is factored in before The Dark Monarch takes effect. Thus, using the Raise Spectre gem along with a level 4 Congregation Support allows you to have as many as 14 Raised Spectres, for example, just by having this combination! Here is what you need to do to achieve that number:
- +3 from a level 25 Raise Spectre gem
- +1 from the Chest Armor mod
- +1 from Death Attunement (Passive Skill)
- +1 from Bitterbind Point
- Double the total by equipping The Dark Monarch
Although Congregation Support works with any minion build, it is best used in the hands of the Raise Spectre Necromancer build.
